welcomes new Board of
Directors members
Five professionals representing diverse organizations have been chosen to serve on
the Tempe Chamber’s Board of Directors for three-year terms, 2011-2014.
The Tempe Chamber of Commerce’s Nominating Committee believes that Stephen
Eberhart, The Buttes, A Marriott Resort; Mark Masten, Wells Fargo; Laura
Robertson, Banner Baywood Medical Center; Timothy Ronan, Davis Miles; and
Jackie Thompson, Southwest Airlines, will be instrumental in shaping the future
of the Tempe Chamber.
Stephen Eberhart has been serving as General Manager at
The Buttes, A Marriott Resort since 2003 and was instrumental
in successfully converting the property from Wyndham to the
Marriott flag. In addition, he developed and opened the onsite
Narande Spa in 2005. Before his current position at The Buttes,
Eberhart worked for Wyndham International in several capacities
for 19 years.
He has a history of driving significant gains in top-line revenues
and bottom-line profits and believes that his strategic business
sense, uncompromising work ethic and sincerity have helped
create consistent profits and loyal support of nationwide customers, employees, suppliers, business
partners, managers, community leaders and local officials.
He played a key role in the successful growth of 24 upscale Wyndham hotels, and during his time
at The Buttes, he has initiated a mentor program, an employee clothing exchange and an energy
conservation team.
Eberhart received his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and is currently a board member with
the Tempe Convention and Visitors’ Bureau and the Valley Hotel and Resort Association.
Mark Masten is currently serving as Community Banking
District Manager, Vice President, at Wells Fargo Bank, Tempe.
He possesses a significant understanding of corporate strategy
and operations and is passionate about changing the lives of
customers through financial advice.
His areas of expertise include innovative strategy implementation
and execution; complex credit management; building and
retaining high performing teams; and more.
Before taking his current position, Masten served as store
manager, service manager, personal banker and teller. He also owned M3 Transport in Buckeye before
selling that business in 2003.
Masten received his Master of Business Administration from Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey
School of Business recently with an emphasis on entrepreneurship and leadership.
Laura Robertson is Chief Executive Officer at Banner Baywood
Medical Center in Mesa and is responsible for managing and
overseeing all facets of the hospital’s operations, including
2,000 employees, 910 medical staff members and a net revenue
budget of $295.4 million. Before taking this position, Robertson
served in several positions at Banner Heart Hospital, including
Chief Executive Officer and Chief Nursing Officer. Before that, she
worked at Phoenix’s Good Samaritan Medical Center for 14 years.
Robertson received her Bachelor of Science, Nursing, from the
University of Arizona and her Master of Business, Health Care
Management, from the University of Phoenix.
She is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and is a member of the American
Organization in Nurse Executives; Arizona Nurses Association; and the American Association of Critical
Care Nurses.
Timothy Ronan is an AV Rated Attorney with over 26 years of
experience in providing legal counsel to small and medium size
businesses in the areas of mergers, acquisitions, capital formation,
employee relations and business planning. He has over 20 years
of experience in counseling and preparing estate plans, wills and
trusts and asset protection planning for individuals, families and
business owners.
Over the years, Ronan has been involved in the community as a
volunteer with multiple nonprofit groups and has assisted in the
preparation of legislation, including legislation that created the
Arizona Limited Liability Company Act.
Currently, he works at Davis Miles, PLLC, as Partner and Head of Transactional Department, which
includes commercial and real estate transactions.
Ronan has served as president of the Board of Directors of the Mesa Convention and Visitors Bureau
and was the founder, director and treasurer of the Maricopa County Sports Authority, now the
Maricopa County Sports Commission.
He holds bachelor’s degrees in political science and philosophy, and received his J.D. degree from
Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C.
Jackie Thompson is the Corporate Community Affairs and
Grassroots Manager for Southwest Airlines. She focuses on key
areas such as business, leadership, arts and education and social
advocacy and is also charged with forging high-profile local,
regional and national relationships with nonprofit, business
and political organizations to positively impact the diverse
communities Southwest serves.
She launched her career at Southwest in 1994 and played a key
role in supporting the social responsibility efforts in Arizona for
the company. She serves on boards, committees and advisory
positions in her capacity as Community Affairs Manager, including the Arizona Foundation for Women
and East Valley Partnership.
Thompson has been the recipient of many awards, including the Tempe Chamber of Commerce’s
Business Woman of the Year Award. Recognition from the company includes the President’s Award,
Community Service Extraordinaire and the Legislative Ambassador of the Year awards.
Born, raised and educated in Liverpool, England, she graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in Business.

Our directors, whose names are just to the left of this column, are true leaders
in Tempe and the region. They take seriously their fiduciary responsibility to
ensure that the Chamber is fiscally responsible. They keep their fingers on the
pulse of the community so that we can offer programs most needed by our
member businesses. They selflessly choose policies and endorsements that will
create local economy for all businesses – not just their own.
Most importantly, they are unafraid to take an early stand on controversial
issues impacting the business community. This courage enabled me to solicit
further support on issues from chambers throughout the state, expanding our
reach and increasing our level of influence on public policy.
This past year, the Board’s decision to support a multi-faceted approach to
federal immigration policy led to a statement co-signed by 20 other chambers
that was presented to members of Congress in January. Their determination
that citizenship should be decided at the federal level resulted in a statement
to the State Legislature that was again co-signed by 20 other chambers. And
their long desire to stimulate economic development on the state level led to
more than 40 chambers supporting this year’s jobs package.
We tend to say that we don’t have a working board, we have a policy-making
board. Members of working boards must sit on subcommittees and other
committees of the organization. But trust me – policy-making board members
work, and work hard. They have to weigh all the issues, have open, frank and
sometimes uncomfortable discussions, and then they have to agree on a
direction.
To those Board members whose terms are ending (Lorraine Bergman, Mark
Duplissis, Vicki Kringen, Clark Peterson, Jody Robertson), it has been a true
pleasure to work with you. I know that our new Board members are up to the
task of carrying on your legacy.

POLICY UPDATE
Chamber opposes new fees on businesses
The City of Tempe is considering establishing a tiered-fee schedule for property inspections
by the Tempe Fire Department. The proposed fees presented to the Chamber in April range
from $25 every two years for a low-risk business, such as a professional office, to $325 and
up every two years for businesses considered maximum risks, such as large hotels and
apartments.
While the Tempe Chamber admires the work of the Fire Department, we feel that these
fees increase the cost of doing business in Tempe at a time when we should be stimulating
economic growth. The Chamber opposes these new fees.
Tempe Fire is holding two public forums on this proposed program. We encourage you all
to attend and provide your input. The forums will be held on the following days:
• Wednesday, June 8, 6 to 7 p.m. – Tempe Fire Training Center, 1340 E. University Dr.
• Thursday, June 9, 6 to 7 p.m. – Tempe Police South Substation, 8201 S. Hardy Dr.

Chamber supports stable property tax levy
The Tempe Chamber supports a new policy by the City of Tempe to stabilize the amount of
money it can receive through property tax.
The amount of property tax collected is dependent on two things: the assessed value of
the property and the tax rate set by the governing body, in this case the City Council. If the
tax rate stays constant, the amount of tax collected – and the amount paid by property
owners – will rise and fall as valuations rise and fall. Before the recession, the amount
paid by property owners rose because the same tax rate was applied to rising property
values – a decision opposed by the Chamber.
More recently, property valuations have fallen resulting in a decrease in property tax
collections. The Tempe Chamber believes that tax levels should be reasonable to continue
necessary infrastructure support and maintain this great community. Setting the property
tax levy where it is currently and allowing for a CPI increase and new construction will
result in a higher tax rate, but in minimal change to the actual amount paid by property
owners. The Chamber supports this policy, both as property values go down, and as
they rise.

Women in Business Conference and Trade Show roundup

The Tempe Chamber of Commerce was pleased to announce Vicki Kringen, Vice
President/COO of TCH (The Centers for Habilitation), as its 2011 Business Woman of
the Year at the 16th Annual Women in Business Conference and Trade Show held last
week at The Buttes, A Marriott Resort.
The event featured three amazing keynote speakers, who each gave presentations
based on the theme of “Reach, Achieve, Celebrate!” We wish to thank Lillian Coury
of Pegasus Pathways, Karen Leparulo of Guggenheim Funds and Pam Gaber of
Gabriel’s Angels for their time and inspiration.
Special thanks to April Warnecke, 3TV meteorologist, for emceeing the event and

MAC UPDATE
The Military Affairs Committee closed the 2010-2011 year with a celebration and recognition
of HMCS Gabrielle L. Duffey from Operational Health Support Unit, San Diego Detachment B.
Senior Chief Duffey currently serves as the Senior Enlisted Leader for her unit at NOSC Phoenix.
Her decorations include: Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal; Army Commendation
Medal; four Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals; five Reserve Meritorious Service
Medals; two National Defense Service Medals; Armed Forces Reserve Ribbon with Silver
Hourglass and “M” device; Overseas Service Ribbon; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon; and
Afghan Campaign Medal with campaign star, along with various other awards.
The event took place at Heidi’s Events and Catering on May 18 and was attended by members
of the Navy Operational Support Center in Phoenix and the Tempe Chamber’s Military Affairs
Committee. Special guests were Katelyn Hudock from Hilton Phoenix Chandler and Sandra
Keeme from Rosita’s Fine Mexican Food Restaurant.
Once again, we want to thank our generous donors of gift certificates for our MAC honorees.
HMCS Duffey received a weekend stay at the Hilton Phoenix Chandler, dinner for two at
Rosita’s Fine Mexican Food Restaurant, as well as certificates to P.F. Chang’s on Mill and

The Pride of the City Award was presented recently to Dave Cutty, president and CEO of
TCH. Working for TCH for nearly 40 years, Cutty has been the driving force behind TCH to
create homes, quality programs and jobs for individuals with disabilities. A great leader and
dedicated member of the Tempe community, the City of Tempe and Tempe Community
Council are honored to recognize this exceptional individual.
US Airways recently recognized long-time US Airways executive C.A. Howlett as he received
the 2011 Carol B. Hallett Award at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Aviation Conference for his
leadership excellence and outstanding contributions to the aviation industry. Howlett played
a central role at US Airways over his 16-year career.

Celebrate the past year with
the Tempe Chamber
Join us for our Annual Luncheon on Thursday, July 21, as we review the past year’s accomplishments
and successes and share our vision for the upcoming year. We honor those who have worked
with us over the past year and introduce the incoming Board of Directors and committee chairs.
Presentations by our leadership and an awards ceremony for our members add to the enjoyment
of this plated luncheon.
Our keynote speaker is Andrew Walter, ASU football star quarterback (2001-2004) and former
member of the Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots. In 2010 he started a lending firm
specializing in short-term, secured notes for small businesses and is a member of the advisory
board of Vet Tix. The event will take place from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at the Fiesta Resort Conference
Center, 2100 S. Priest Dr.

LOS TRES AMIGOS
A HUGE SUCCESS!
The Tempe, Phoenix and Scottsdale chambers
of commerce joined together on May 10 to host
the annual Los Tres Amigos mixer. The casual
social event provided an unequalled chance
to network with hundreds from the chamber
world and business community.
The Tempe Chamber would like to thank Heidi’s

evening in a quality photograph; and Ray the
DJ for providing fantastic live entertainment.

At this exciting event, we review the past year’s
accomplishments and successes and share our vision for the
upcoming year. We honor those who have worked with us over
the past year and introduce the incoming Board of Directors
and committee chairs. Presentations by our leadership and
an awards ceremony for our members add to the enjoyment
of this plated luncheon. Our keynote speaker is Andrew
Walter, ASU football star quarterback (2001-2004) and former
member of the Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots.
In 2010 he started a lending firm specializing in short-term,
secured notes for small businesses and is a member of the
advisory board of Vet Tix.
