WELCOME to campus
If you’re new to campus you may not have heard all the buzz. There has
been plenty of excitement and certainly much more to come about the
newly renovated Farrell Student and Community Center. The building
was erected in 1964 and named for Sheriff Jerome J. Farrell of
Walton, NY. Farrell was present when NYS Governor William Sulzer
signed the bill to charter SUNY Delhi on May 24, 1913. Farrell was appointed by the Governor to the Board of Visitors at the Delhi Agriculture
& Technical Institute. He served the college in this role for many years.
For over 40 years, the building has served the campus community in
many capacities as the center for student government, clubs, Greek Life,
Athletics, food services, commencement ceremonies, theatrical productions, and an impressive list of guest speakers and entertainers ranging
from Ralph Nader to U2 and Dave Chappelle.
The $20.6 million renovation was made possible through strategic planning and many generous gifts including the 2006 class gift of $10,000, a
$300,000 design donated by award-winning architect and alum Douglas
Okun and at $10 million State grant secured by Senator John Bonacic.
The 18-month transformation of Farrell is sure to be greatly appreciated
as students and the community make use of this beautiful multi-use
facility. Let’s all enjoy and respect this new gem on campus.

The brothers of Tau Delta Chi will waste no time
in kicking off the 2010 weekend programming
series with the TDX 2010 THROWDOWN.
With some help from the Student Programming
Board and CADI, several of the newer TDX
brothers decided it was time to revive their always popular campus event after an absence of
two years. The event is scheduled to take place
on Saturday, September 4 at 5 PM outside the
Farrell Student and Community Center.

a few surprises. This year’s event will also be
used to introduce students to the new weekend
dining services available in Farrell.
It will be an easy event to find, just follow the
music, and look for all of the people.

ORIENTATION 2010
Welcome new students!
Instead of a “traditional welcome letter,” I thought I’d welcome you with my
“Top Ten Tips for Success in College”
10.
Go to class, go to class, go to class! It’s hard to believe, but you won’t know what’s going on if you
don’t.
9.
Check out the brand new Farrell Student & Community Center. We’ve totally renovated this building with lots of input from students, so this building should be a perfect spot for you to eat, meet and greet!
8.
Get involved! Students involved in campus activities are happier and more academically successful. Join Hammond, one of her Freshmen
a club, attend a concert, volunteer. An excellent way to figure it all out is to attend the Student Activities Seminar students, at the Student Life
Fair, September 15, 7-10 pm in Farrell.
Leadership Awards in May.
7.
Visit the Resnick Learning Center. Lots more than lattes and muffins here. Learn about free tutoring, opportunities to work on campus and
much more.
6.
Explore the campus. Know the best eateries? The best places to study? Where commuters hang out? Learn the campus so you can own the
best spots.
5.
Learn about the community. The Village of Delhi is more than the bank and the post office. Take a walk, make note of the businesses that
honor “Delhi Downtown Dollars (3D)” where you can buy stuff and charge it to your 3D account.
4.
Be healthy. Attend one of the Freshmen Four events covering important topics for freshmen: Campus Safety, How to Get Involved on Campus,
Relationships, and Substance Abuse.
3.
Make a new friend. With more than 900 first-time, full-time students on campus, your new best friend awaits you. Make an effort to get to
know some of the 900—you might make a BFF.
2.
Get to know your advisor. Your advisor should be your new best bud. S/he can help you with all things academic. Make visiting your advisor
a priority.
1.
Come say “hi.” My office is 135 Bush Hall and I really would like you to stop by and introduce yourself. I love meeting students and you
never know when it might come in handy to say, “I know the president.”

Delhi Campus Ministry:
Your Spiritual Resource on Campus
Welcome to campus, and to a new year of possibility! I am
Martha E. Vink, Campus Minister, and advisor to the Delhi
Campus Interfaith Council (DCIC). DCIC is for students of
any or no faith background who want to get together to talk,
plan events and community service projects, and sponsor activities like retreats, book or Bible studies, fun stuff, and whatever may interest you.
DCIC also sponsors the Alternative Winter Break to work with
Habitat for Humanity every year in
February. In the last several years we
have been going to the areas hardest
hit by recent hurricanes, including
Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana,
and Texas. Look for posters with
details soon. DCIC usually meets
on Thursday evenings at 5.
I’d love to help you care for your
spiritual help while you are here at
SUNY Delhi! Want to chat? Give me
a call at 607-746-4239, and we can
set up an appointment, have a meal
together, whatever works for you. My office is in the Farrell
Student and Community Center, on the Club level, in B10. My
hours are on Thursday afternoons from 1:30-4:45, and I am
available by appointment as well. I am also the pastor at the
United Ministry of Delhi, and can often be reached there at
746-2191, extension 202. I wish you well as the new semester
starts, and look forward to seeing you!

SUNY DELHI CULINARY TEAM TAKES GOLD

Delhi Becomes First College in NYS to Win
American Culinary Federation Championship
SUNY Delhi’s hot food team was crowned the

The National Champions include: Sarah Thurgood, Team Captain, a fourth-year student from

competition by two points. The margin of victory ranks among the largest in the event’s history.
This is the team’s first national title and Delhi is
the first college in New York State to ever win

SUNY Delhi’s culinary arts program has
long been recognized as one of the best in
the country. The program offers students a
firm foundation in which to start their careers as culinary professionals. It progresses through basic skills dealing with Garde
Manger, baking, sauces, stocks, etc., to the
capstone course, Signatures by Candlelight,
a full service fine dining restaurant that is
open to the public and operated by SUNY
Delhi students. In addition to the core classes, there are numerous culinary electives
offered to help each student customize their
portfolio of education. Depending on their
interest or direction in the field, students can
choose from electives such as advanced meat
cutting, culinary competition, advanced pastries
and confections, and culinary sculpting, which
uses 300-pound ice blocks made on campus by
culinary students in the college’s own ice sculpting lab.

SUNY Delhi’s Family Day
Saturday, September 25, 2010
COME ON! Don’t miss our wildly popular Family Day
that features lots of activities on and around our beautiful
campus plus a special dinner show featuring
“1964-The #1 Beatles Tribute Band In The World”.
Find all the details in the mailing to your home or @ www.delhi.edu
Make Your Reservations EARLY! Deadline is Friday, September 17th.
One of SUNY Delhi’s most popular traditions is Family Day. It’s a big
winner with the families of freshmen and returning students alike because the campus and local community join together to bring a huge variety of activities and entertainment for your enjoyment. Autumn in the
Catskills is beautiful and there’s no better way to enjoy it then with your
family and loved ones. Add the fact that it’s been about a month since
the end of summer, when you’ve likely last seen each other, and you have
all the perfect ingredients for a memorable weekend.
Beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 25, choose from an exciting array of options. Campus activities will feature: Dr. Cue’s Billards
Trick Show, Extreme Air Sky Diving simulator, “Snakes Alive”, horse
drawn wagon rides, wildlife and comedy shows, student performances,
family games and a movie plus the opportunity to enjoy the college’s
state-of-the art fitness and pool. And don’t forget to pick up fun souvenirs along the way, like a family portrait t-shirt or balloon sculptures.
You can also take a free shuttle to Delhi’s Historical Association and the
Community Harvest Festival that will feature seasonal foods and over 60
vendors on the Village Green.
From 4:30 - 8:30 p.m., enjoy dinner and “1964 - the #1 Beatles Tribute
Band in the World.” (Professor Terry Hamblin will give a one hour lecture entitled, “You Say You Want a Revolution...The Music and Politics
of the Beatles” from 1 - 4 p.m. in Evenden Tower to get you in the mood
for the show.)
If you’re up for spending the night, a delicious Sunday brunch will be
served from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. September 26 in the student dining center,
MacDonald Hall, and the Binghamton Philharmonic will perform in the
Farrell Student and Community Center at 3 p.m.
All are welcome but reservations are required by September 17 and
bookings for overnight accommodations are suggested even earlier.
Visit www.delhi.edu for more details. Families, watch your mail for your
printed invitation with all the details including prices. Questions? Call
the Family Day Help Line at 607-746-4216.
PLEASE NOTE: most activities and performances will require pre-registration and a wristband for entrance.

big and well known name to start the always popular and well attended comedy series off, and in
successfully booking Eddie Ifft, they have done just that. Eddie will be performing in the newly
refurbished Okun Theater, located in the Farrell Student and Community Center on Saturday,
September 11 at 8 PM.
Eddie Ifft is well known from his appearances on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend,. Last Comic
Standing, BET Comic View, his solo Comedy Central Special Performance, and also from his
very funny commercials for KFC and Arby’s. Ifft has also released three comedy CD’s, including
the best selling “Live From Australia”.
This show will mark Eddie’s second appearance at SUNY Delhi, and his first in almost 8 years.
Admission is free with your student ID.
ORIENTATION 2010
10
TO:
All SUNY Delhi Students
FROM:
Marty Greenfield, Director of Student Activities
John Huber, Assistant Director of Student Activities and Greek Council Advisor
DATE:
August 2010
SUBJECT:
Campus Update on Greek Life
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to campus and advise you about Greek Life at SUNY Delhi. It is
important to know the differences between recognized fraternities and sororities versus the unrecognized ones.
First, in an effort to support the recognized Greek Organizations on campus, the College permits first semester pledging.
First semester students are permitted to pledge recognized fraternities and sororities each semester after achieving a mid
term grade of 2.25 in October. The pledging period is limited to four weeks.
Recognized groups must meet minimum academic requirements, must agree to a non-hazing policy, must have an advisor
who is a member of the College faculty or staff, must engage in community service, can use college facilities, and
participate in many campus wide activities, programs and leadership development activities. Members of recognized
groups can also post their leadership experiences on the College’s Co-Curricular Transcript which can be very
beneficial for receiving scholarships, awards and for transfer or career opportunities.
If students are interested in joining a Greek Organization, we advise that they speak to one of the recognized
organizations listed below.
RECOGNIZED ORGANIZATIONS:
Sororities (female)
Fraternities (male)
Mu Iota Upsilon
Delta Theta Gamma
Omicron Xi Omega
Tau Delta Chi
Pi Nu Epsilon
Tau Kappa Epsilon
Sigma Omega Epsilon
Lambda Iota Upsilon
Zeta Delta Tau
Delta Omega Epsilon
Lambda Alpha Upsilon
Co-ed Fraternities (male and female)
Upsilon Delta Epsilon
Zeta Phi Omega
Beta Kappa Xi
We strongly advise students against joining an unrecognized organization because they are unregulated,
unsupervised, and are often associated with alcohol abuse and related problems and some have engaged in hazing
practices. While unrecognized groups by their very nature are in flux, listed below is a list of those organizations we
know about.
UNRECOGNIZED ORGANIZATIONS:
Female
Male
Omega Xi Delta
Omega Delta Iota
Sigma Delta Xi
Rho Chi Phi
Beta Delta Epsilon
Theta Rho Delta
Lambda Sigma Upsilon
Coed
Phi Omega Alpha
If you have questions about Greek Life, please contact John Huber, Greek Council Advisor the Farrell Student and
Community Center or at 746-4567. Best wishes this semester.
HAZING HOTLINE
746-4562
IF YOU ARE A VICTIM OF HAZING OR KNOW
SOMEONE WHO MAY BE EXPERIENCING
HAZING, CALL THE HAZING HOTLINE
Callers are asked to include as much detailed information as
possible about the incident including the date, time, location,
and organization or people involved. While calls can be
Anonymous, it is very helpful to successfully investigate hazing
if we have a name and contact number of the person reporting
the incident for further questions if needed.
Come Support the SUNY Delhi
Women’s Volleyball Team
The SUNY Delhi Women’s Volleyball Team is coming off the
strongest season in program history. The team will be entering
the 2010 season as the defending Mountain Valley Conference

ORIENTATION 2010
SUNY Delhi and the OCCE welcome our VISTA member
Please join us in a big welcome to our VISTA member, Mary Pysnik, from
Sidney, NY. We have been granted, through the New York Campus
Compact, an AmeriCorps VISTA member from August 27, 2010 to August
26, 2011 to work on our project, FROM FARM TO TABLE: Strengthening
Rural Economies and Communities through Locally Grown Foods. Mary
will be working out of the OCCE offices, and living in Catskill Hall. She
will be coordinating events like our first Food for Thought screening of
“Food Inc” on September 16th. Soon after, she’ll facilitate a farmer’s
market visit to the campus at the same time we experiment with serving a
meal made up of local food products. Our goal, in partnership with Farm
Catskills and Delaware Opportunities, is to get more local food into our
local institutions, surrounding schools, hospitals, senior meal sites and
even on campus! Stop by the OCCE to find out more information and the
ways you can help make our dream a reality.
FOOD
FOR
THOUGHT
An energetic and interdisciplinary group of faculty,
staff and students are working together to sponsor
a campus-wide programming theme for the 201011 year entitled “Food For Thought.” Faculty and
staff brainstormed ways to incorporate this theme
across the curriculum and departments.
Please mark your calendars for the first FFT activities for the Fall 2010 semester, and watch for news
of future activities.
Thursday, September 16, -10 a.m. -2 p.m.
Health Fair in Farrell Student & Community
Center
Thursday, September 16, 7 p.m. - Film “Food,
Inc.,” Farrell Okun Theatre for campus and
community followed by small group discussions.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to participate
and involve their students.
There are many ways for students, faculty and
staff to get involved and to incorporate this theme
into their club activities, classes and departments.
For instance, Professor Lynn Domina is exploring
ways to incorporate the theme of sustenance into
her American Lit I class group project. Athletics
and Health staff members are exploring ways to
promote nutritional guidance along with fitness
center orientations. CADI, faculty and staff members are seeking ways to purchase local food products to be cooked by students and served at a late
fall dinner in Mac Hall.
Students interested in joining the committee can
contact Mary Pysnik, Vista Member, at [email protected] or Barbara Jones, jonesbe@delhi.
edu at 746-4442, or speak with any of the committee members listed below:

SUNY DELHI
GREAT PLACE
TO WORK
SUNY Delhi again has been
named a ``Great College to
Work For,’’ according to The
Chronicle of Higher Education.
SUNY Delhi is among 97 institutions honored by The Chronicle.
The school earned recognitionin
three categories for fouryear colleges with enrollments of up to 2,999
students. The categories include
professional/ career development
programs; compensation and benefits; and respect and appreciation.
This is the second consecutive year
that the State University College
of Technology at Delhi has been
named a Great College to Work For
after a survey by The Chronicle.
“I am very proud that SUNY Delhi
is recognized again as a Great College to Work For,” President Candace Vancko said in a media release.
“We have outstanding faculty and staff who value the
educational
environment
we
have created at SUNY Delhi.”
The Chronicle’s survey results
are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics
and workplace policies from each
institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators
and professional support staff.
The primary factor in deciding
whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback. The results are based on a survey of more than 42,000 employees
at 277 colleges and universities.
“Our faculty and staff love their
jobs and see SUNY Delhi as the
place where they want to spend
their careers,” Director of Administrative Services Bonnie G. Martin said in a media release. “Of all
the categories in which we could
have been recognized, I am especially pleased that they rate respect
and appreciation high on their list.”
In announcing 2010’s Great Colleges to Work For, the editors of The
Chronicle noted some of the valueadded benefits that are available to
the campus community at SUNY
Delhi, including gourmet meals at
discounted prices and prepared by
the college’s award-winning culinary program, as well as specialized care from its veterinary science
technology department.

ORIENTATION 2010
SUNY Delhi Named Partner of the Year by The Arc
The Arc of Delaware County (aka Delarc) recently honored SUNY Delhi with its
Partner of the
Year Award. The award is presented to the community partner who has done the
most to enhance opportunities for individuals with disabilities in Delaware
County.
SUNY Delhi President Candace Vancko was presented with the Partner of the Year
plaque at a ceremony held at The Arc this summer. The partnership with SUNY
Delhi began several years ago with a handful of SUNY students volunteering at
Bike-A-Thon, Christmas parties and other special events.
Over the past three years, Professor Dave DeForest and many of his students have
created new learning opportunities for people supported by The Arc who have an
interest in nature and the great outdoors. SUNY students have worked with the
Arc consumers to enhance their survival skills, build a shelter in the woods, plant
trees to protect streams, tap maple trees and make syrup that they ate on pancakes.

Tatnall’s students did various projects, ranging from working one-on-one with a
woman learning to make tie-dye T-shirts, to a small group of students creating a
three-dimensional mural in a multi-sensory room.
Delarc Director of Community Relations, Catherine Tweedie, said Joe Bergamine,
one of the people from CLS, wrote a letter saying, “I like how the Delhi Students
decorated our sensory room. It looks great. I want to thank all the buddies who
came to CLS. I like when the buddies helped teach my class. I hope to see them
