Cadillac Standard Of The World
Ramblin Roy's been
Rambling through the
Internet this month, It's
called surfing but at the
speed my two fingers type Rambling is
closer to the truth. Here’s more Cadillac
Trivia, this time regarding the Eldorado.
El Dorado (two words) is Spanish for
"the gilded, or golden, one" or more
loosely translated, "the golden man"
from Spanish conquistadors folklore
from 1530 AD. Cadillac first used the
term in 1952 where it appeared on a specially built convertible show car to commemorate Cadillac's Golden Anniversary , their 50th. A showstopper with its
14-Karat Gold trim, ivory-like white lac quer paint and East Indian red pepper
leather.
In late 1953 Eldorado (one word) was
on 533, special-bodied, "top of the line,"
convertibles at a 50% price premium of
$7750, making it the highest-priced
production car in America. In '54 the
price dropped a couple thousand and
production nearly quadrupled to 2150
and then 3950 in '55 with anew motor
at 270 HP with dual 4-barrels.
Eldorado immediately became known
as apace setter with the introduction of
the wrap-around windshield. For the
rest of the fifties, Eldorado previewed
styling innovations introduced to the
rest of the line the following year. Examples include: Hydra- Matic transmission with the selector in the dash instead of atop the steering column,
power steering, wire wheels to improve
brake cooling, whitewall tires, built-in
fog lights, vanity mirrors, signalseeking & pushbutton radios, under seat
heater, windshield washers, oil filters
and power seats & windows.
In ‘56 Eldorado, with its distinctive
gold script, became a sub-series with a

(Ramblin Roy continued from page 3)
2-door hardtop Coupe DeVille including
the George Barris inspired Landau top
and a convertible called Biarritz. Both
were priced at $6501 with just over 6000
built. Joined in '57 by a 4-door hardtop
this version of Eldorado ran through '58
and was considered by many to be
America's most beautiful production car.
From there things went south with the
Italian built '59 & '60. From '61-'66 Eldorado=s were mostly upscale convertibles with little distinction. '67-'78 shared
the FWD Olds Toronado platform introduced in '66. Eldo=s, however, were
powered by Cadillac engines including
the largest production car V-8 ever with
a 500 CID from '70 through '76.
From 20,000 annually in the late sixties to over 50,000 at times in the seventies, Eldorado was a big moneymaker for
GM. But, just like the oil embargo killed
the 500 CID motor, the 5 mph bumper
came in '73 killing the classic '71 & 72's
look plus fears of government mandated
roof-crush standards killed the hardtop
and the last year for the rag-top was '76.
The pillared coupe ran until '79 when
the all new, downsized, and also Toronado based, Eldorado "personal couple"
was introduced. A whole 20" shorter, 8"
narrower and 1150# lighter than its
predecessor, it used the Olds 350 port FI
gas and ill- fated Diesel engines. A record 67,436 were built. In '80 the power
came from the Cadillac 368, cousin to
the 425, 472 and 500 CID V-8's. Then,
in '81 through '85 the less robust, Aluminum 4100 (250 CID) motor was used. At
least in terms of volume, the '79 - '85 run
was the most popular Eldorado ever with
a production high of 67,436 in '84.
Then the cruelest blow of all, they
again downsized, '86 -'91 Eldorado was
a mere shadow of a former great Eldorado=s. Production slipped to a mere
13,000 as did Cadillac's grip on the lu xury car market for the first time since
Page 4
overcoming Packard in 1951.
The '92-'02 model revived sales for a
while, especially with the introduction of
the NorthStar engine in '93. But sales
dwindled; dropping into the teens again
until the last Eldorado was built in 2002,
Cadillac's 100th year, 50 years after the
1st Eldorado appeared.
So why my sudden interest in Eldorado=s? Because Maxine & I are the
proud new owners of a 1980 Eldorado
from FL. At this writing we haven't seen
it yet but our son checked it out, bought
it and hauled it home for us from its
most recent home in Excelsior, MN.
See Roy’s pictures on page 5 and 10.

Editorial
Today while I’m writing
this letter, I’m looking out
my window and enjoying
the bright sunny skies and
the temperature in the 50’s. I sure hope
Spring has sprung.
I’m about ready to take the cover off
my Eldo and start driving it around.
About all I have to do is some minor
things, like clean-up, waxing the car and
changing the oil. I’m sure many of you
are also busy getting your cars ready for
touring and other car events. I know
some of you have a lot more to do than I
did. I know some of you are rebuilding
your engines or transmissions or both.
Also some of you are going through
complete restorations, a real chore.
I’m hoping this weather holds so we
can drive our cars to Mancinis Party on
Monday, April 12, 2004. Remember
there will be a special parking area for
our cars. If most of the members attending would drive their cars there we could
have our own car show at the same
time.
For those of you who attend the Saturday night Downtown St. Paul Car
Show, that event starts Saturday, May
29, 2004. Also for those of you who
attend the Friday night North St. Paul
Car Show, that event starts Friday, June
11, 2004. Remember that show starts at
5:00PM. They don’t want you parking
your car there until that time. Doing so
may jeopardize this event.
Check the events calendar for a couple car shows in May at the Minnesota
State Fairgrounds. These are not our
events, but are great car shows.
Sunday, June 6, 2004 is the All GM
Car Truck Show at the Minnesota State
Fairgrounds. This is a big car show
event. Our club receives money from
this event, which helps keep our club
going. Duane Warren is our representative to the GMCCA which governs this
event. They need volunteers to help
with this event. The work is easy and
only takes at the most one hour of your
time. If you would like to volunteer
your time, please contact Duane Warren at 763-420-7980. Also remember to
send your registration form in, if you
are going to attend this event. The orange flyer in this newsletter has the
form.
I chose to put the picture of the new
2005 Cadillac STS that will be coming
out this fall. I know a few of you don’t
like this new design that Cadillac is using for their new upcoming vehicles.
Myself I like it. It’s different from what
is coming from Asia and Europe. I
think Cadillac is building excitement
and durability into their new vehicles.
Cadillac is even getting back into the
performance picture and racing.
I’m going to step up to the soap box
again and ask you to start sending in
some stories about your cars, excitement you had rebuilding them or the
bad luck you had with a project. Send
some pictures also. Send them to me or
Roy Boone.
Talk to you next month.
