LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Lead us Laurence Men to Seize Victory!
Dear Friends of St. Laurence,
As I reflect on where we have been and where we are headed as a school, I am proud to be a Viking. This is
all thanks to the faculty and staff, alumni, parents and students who remained committed and courageous
during these transformative years.
Our faculty members were bold in enhancing the Viking education and building on our athletic foundation
to defend the glory of the black and gold. Although we faced challenging waves, their courageous attitude
and heartfelt commitment to the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers helped us achieve many successes.
St. Laurence is one of the only all-boy Catholic High Schools that showed an average increase in test-takers
the past three years, and our enrollment is on track to grow by 10% over a four-year period. We have also seen
improved attrition rates. By valuing our students and preparing them to be 21st century leaders, we achieved
these successes. We have remained unique with our academic schedule and curriculum, university and corporate partnerships, and consistent facility enhancements, along with our four-year leadership program.
Since 2012, St. Laurence made many faculty and facility enhancements required to provide a better educational
and athletic experience for our students. These include, but are not limited to, consistent salary increases
and an improved pension plan for our faculty, wireless access throughout the entire building, an updated
phone system, improved technology in the library, a varsity basketball locker room, a wrestling room and new
mats, a multi-purpose turf room, a new band room, tile abatement for our academic halls and wings, and an
energy-efficient boiler system.
These dramatic improvements to our school could not have happened without your support. Thank you for
participating in our networking luncheons, college internship program, and mentorship program. Thank you
also to those who updated their information for the 2016 alumni directory. Due to these efforts, our alumni
donor percentage improved by nearly 25% in three years and we experienced an extremely successful Annual
Fund ’16, closing at $539,390. We also had 272 new donors in three years, which is nearly 160% increase in total
new donors since AF12.
While much progress has been made, there is still work to do. We must continue to raise money to support
growth in spirituality, leadership, academics, athletics, and scholarships.
As always, you are the foundation for success and I continue to ask you for your support in prayers, time,
and financial commitment. Please stop by to see these enhancements. It would be great to show you around
and provide you an update.
Please help us Seize Victory on our future endeavors. Thank you and God Bless.
Warm Regards,
Joseph A. Martinez ‘99

St. Laurence is proud to announce another successful turnout at the entrance exam this year. We had an
outstanding percentage of our testers register, which
resulted in our freshmen class being the largest in the
school. What is most impressive about this group is that
39% of them were placed in our AP or Honors Programs.
The administration, faculty and staff have done an
outstanding job implementing and enhancing all of our
new initiatives that makes St. Laurence a unique choice
for students. The best way for students to experience
this is by attending a Viking Visit Day or an Open House.

St. Laurence High School is an all boys
Catholic high school. While our mission is
directed by the Catholic faith, St. Laurence
is also catholic (universal) in welcoming
students of all faiths. It is the school’s
intention to develop leaders for society.
That leadership is nourished by faith and
a personal relationship with Jesus. Our
patron, St. Laurence, stands as a model
to be followed in generosity, self-giving,
understanding, service, and good will, to
name a few. Our students are encouraged
to participate as they are able, and to give
of their time, talent, and treasure for their
own good and the good of others.

ATHLETICS
“Defend the Glory.”
Year-End Update The Viking studentathletes continue to “Defend the glory of
the black and gold!” This past winter saw
Coach Maley guide the basketball team
to the most wins since 2008-09. This
included winning the Stagg Thanksgiving
tournament and earning a Top 10 ranking
in the Southtown early in the season.
Coach Maley will look to build upon this
success in his 2nd year at the helm. Additionally, the wrestling team produced
some great individual performances, as
3 Vikings qualified for the State Finals.
Senior Frank Tomaskovic led the way with
a 6th place finish at heavyweight.
In the spring, the baseball team won their
5th straight Regional Championship. They
now have captured 8 Regionals in the 10
years that Pete Lotus has been the head
coach. The Vikes return a lot of talent and
will be looking to capture another CCL Blue
title while chasing a state title next season.
Also, the lacrosse team posted another solid
season, as they finished the regular season
in the top 15 of their class. Meanwhile,
the bass fishing team sent a boat to the
State Finals for the 3rd straight year. Santo
Munizzi and Paul Petan were the members
of the qualifying boat for the Vikings.
As we put the 2014-15 school year into
the history books, we are confident our
student-athletes will continue to excel on
and off the field this year, and invite you to
attend home sporting events and see our
teams in action!
Viking Voyage We are very excited to announce that Jim Tracy ’72 has joined the
athletic department. Jim’s focus will be on
development efforts for athletics, primarily
the Viking Voyage. His work will be instrumental as we continue to grow the Viking
Voyage. Jim will be reaching out to many
of our alumni athletes and former coaches
for support in growing the Viking Voyage.
Thank you to everyone who supported
the Viking Voyage this past year. We had
the best year yet, and are looking to build
upon that this year. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to start improvements
in the Charles Grunhard Fitness Center.
We are still working toward our goal to
replace all the equipment. If you would
like to support the current project, or any
of our specific athletic programs, please
contact Jim at 708-458-6900 x253 or
[email protected].
New Hires In addition to adding Jim Tracy
to the athletic department, we are excited
to welcome Jay Clarke as the new Head
Lacrosse Coach and Clayton French as the
new Head Wrestling Coach.
Coach French comes to the Vikings from
downstate Mt. Carmel High School,
where he was the head coach last year.
Previously, he was an assistant coach
at Willowbrook High School for 6 years.
Clay wrestled at Eastern Illinois and then
joined the coaching staff at EIU when he
graduated. He also got started in mixed
martial arts while in college and has
compiled a 20-7 record in his career. Clay
has bolstered his staff with the additions
of Carson Beebe and Joe Phelan. Beebe
was a 3-time State placer at Montini.
He is also an MMA fighter and helps run
Beebe Trained School of Wrestling with his
brothers. Meanwhile, Phelan has been the
longtime head of the Badgers Wrestling
Club and brings over 20 years of coaching
experience with him.
Coach Clarke takes over the lacrosse program looking to build upon the successes
in the program’s short history. Jay played
lacrosse at Marian Catholic and then at
Illinois State University where he was a
4-year starter and 2-year captain. He has
a wide array of coaching experience,
including serving as the head coach at
Marian Catholic, coaching at elite camps
on the East Coast, and most recently serving as the head men’s and women’s coach
at Newcastle University in England. Jay has
been a great ambassador for the sport and
he is excited to continue to grow it at St.
Laurence and on the Southside. In addition to coaching and teaching at St. Laurence, Jay will be running a youth lacrosse
program drawing from the Midway area,
Burbank, and the surrounding suburbs.
We welcome
Clay and Jay as
exciting additions
to our coaching
staff. We are confident they will bring
sustained success
to their respective
programs.

Paul Petan ’16 is an honors student,
3-sport athlete, and tremendous leader.
He attended Palos South Middle School
and resides in Palos Heights. Paul is a
captain for the football, lacrosse, and
bass fishing teams. He is a starter and
key contributor in football and lacrosse,
and he is on the top boat and a returning
State Qualifier for the fishing team. Despite
juggling commitments to 3 sports, Paul
carries an impressive 4.15 GPA.
Reflecting on his high school years, Paul
says, “I am very thankful for the opportunities that St. Laurence has provided me.
I have developed as a student, an athlete,
and a leader. STL feels like home to me
and I have built great relationships with
my classmates, teammates, coaches,
faculty, and staff. The fact that I have
been able to be a multi-sport athlete for
all 4 years without having to choose one
sport over another has been one of the
highlights of my experience.”
