Revelation 1:8
Dear Parishioners and Visitors of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Shrine,
This weekend we celebrate Father’s Day. So, to all of our fathers, a very blessed and Happy Father’s
Day! To those who are fathers to us in so many ways and to our fathers who have gone before us, we
remember, thank and honor them in a special way today as well. Truly, the vocation of fatherhood is a special
and sacred vocation in our world.
In our culture, it is very easy to forget the fact that without fathers, there would be no sons and
daughters. A father’s willingness to say “yes” to God’s will and cooperate with this will to bring life into the
world is essential. It is so essential, in fact, that it was designed as such by God. A man and a woman who
bound their lives together in a sacred union and together say “yes” to God’s gentle request to assist in the
ongoing work of creation of the human family. Essentially, this reality is what we as Catholic Christians
celebrate today when we celebrate Father’s Day. Even though this is a secular holiday rather than a feast of
the Church, it can certainly be embraced by us as the Church and given a renewed meaning.
In a sense, this is what the early Christians did with many secular or pagan holidays as well as with
other aspects of their culture. Pagan festivals, holidays and other aspects of daily life were “Christianized”
and given new meaning, new purpose. In fact, this is exactly what God does through Jesus the Christ. God
takes the old way and gives it new meaning and purpose through His Son, Jesus. I would suggest that we do
the same in our culture and in our time. Today’s holiday of Father’s Day is a perfect opportunity. How can
we renew and bring new purpose and meaning to this cultural holiday? For example, what does it mean to be
a father in the image of the Father? How can fathers be godly and imitate our Father in heaven? Today offers
us a perfect time to reflect upon this challenge.
Recently, someone sent me an email that contained a custom from the Cherokee Indian culture. When
it is time for a boy to become a man, an adult, according to the Cherokee culture, the boy is blindfolded and
led into the wilderness where he must remain by himself through the night, blindfolded. He cannot sleep, eat
or drink. He cannot remove the covering from his eyes. He must stay exactly where he is placed, seated there
alone until morning to prove his bravery and preparedness to assume his role as an adult male. In the morning
when the blindfold is removed by the tribal leader, the boy notices his father sitting by his side. He wasn’t
alone after all. Throughout the entire night without the boy knowing it, his father was with him, watching
over him and praying for him. Our Father, too, is with us when we are blinded by so much in life.
Let us pray for the men in our culture, our families our Church that they will know that the Father is
beside them, always, as they enter more deeply into their sacred vocation with each passing day. Again,
a blessed and Happy Father’s Day to all whom we acknowledge as our fathers. Thanks for being with us this
weekend, God bless.
Fr. Joe

Spiritual Life Formation
Congratulations to the St. John Paul II Regional School Class of 2014!
Our graduates worked hard all year preparing for the rigors of high school and celebrated with a class trip to
Baltimore, MD, their Dinner Dance at Valleybrook Country Club, 8th Grade Retreat, and a special
Class Breakfast. The Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony commemorated a wonderful academic, social,
and spiritual experience for our students. We wish them much success and happiness as they embark
on a new chapter of their lives.

STEWARDSHIP
“Stewardship Love is Unconditional”
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son…”
JOHN 3:16A
Is your love conditional? Is there a price others have to pay to
receive your love? Are you the kind of Steward who is generous
with your time, money and possessions? If you give someone
something, do you expect something in return? Do you give your
time freely or do you “fit it in” when it’s convenient for you?

The Schools of Peace, as centers throughout the
world are called, offer an environment to support
children in their social and artistic efforts.
Each day the children have a different focus theme
for their time together that includes arts, music,
storytelling, science activities and physical activity.
Campers help to create the snacks of the day which
hopefully encourage them to choose healthy and
locally grown foods.
Every year more than thirty thousand children and
adolescents regularly attend the
Sant'Egidio School of Peace
around the world.
This is our fourth year of celebrating our children at
the School of Peace Camp.

UPDATE ON THE “DEATH WITH DIGNITY BILL”
On Thursday, June 5th, the “Death with Dignity” bill (A2270)
was voted on in committee (Health and Senior Services
Committee). This is a bill that will allow doctors to prescribe a
lethal dose of a drug to a patient who has six months to live – it
is an assisted suicide bill hiding under the cloak of misguided
“compassion.”
June 7– June 8
Basket: $13,415
Online Giving: $1,163
Brazilian Missions: $ 1,321
Upcoming Collections:
June 22: Air Conditioning Expenses
God bless our fathers, grandfathers,
godfathers and paternal guardians!
June 15, 2014
The committee members approved the bill and sent it to the
full assembly and senate to be voted on – to make it law.
There were a few amendments to the bill:
1st – they voted to change the name to
“NJ Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill.”
And 2nd – they voted to take away the referendum on the ballot
which would have allowed us to vote on the bill at the next
election. Most polls taken when this bill was introduced
showed that people of the state overwhelmingly opposed this
bill, so taking away our vote on it is a sign that the bill’s
sponsors were afraid to give it to the voters who would vote it
down.
What can we do?
Please take a few minutes of your time to call or write or email
your state representatives and voice your opposition to this bill.
There are handouts at the doors of the church with the contact
information for representatives in our area and some talking
points about the issue.
Our pro-life contact people in Trenton feel that this bill will be
rushed to a vote before the end of the month, so time is critical.
We only had 3 days’ notice last week before the in-committee
vote, so the sponsors of this bill are on a mission to avoid
opposition and are hurrying along the process of passing
it into law.
Questions – call Mary Ann at 435-1468 or email
[email protected] and I will email you the text of the bill
if you are interested in reading it.
