NCA Regional Specialty and Supported Entry

Once again NCNE sponsored a successful NCA Regional Specialty and Supported Entry at the Eastern
Dog Club shows. We had a very good entry with 5-point majors across the board both days. GCH
Cypress Bay’s Big Sur got the nod both days for Best of Breed and went on to a Group 1 on Saturday with
a Group 4 on Sunday.
NCNE Information Booth was manned both days and
there was a great display of National Specialty goods for
sale just in time for Holiday shopping. Kathy Luce
reported that a good time was had by all at the NCNE
Holiday Party Saturday night with Steve Petsch doing
an excellent job as always presiding over the annual
Yankee Swap.
Champlain Valley KC offered Obedience and Rally
trials at the cluster, and for our Regional Specialty
Kilyka’s Amity Lights Up Snowhaven RN, CGC was
the Highest Scoring Newfoundland in Regular Classes.

It was a real pleasure judging Sweepstakes at the NCNE
Support Entry in Springfield, and I was happy and
honored to be asked. I know there are some that believe
the Newfs of today do not stack up to some of the better
dogs of years ago, but I am convinced that great strides
have been made in the overall quality. We can credit
today’s Newfoundland to a limited number of breeders
whose foresight and dedication have made this possible.
I appreciate the improvement in head type over the years
and I found more than a few puppies with very pretty
heads, broad muzzles and skulls, nice bone, tight feet,
dark expressive eyes, and wonderful coat quality. Most
had good substance throughout. In my opinion, balanced
structure is an area in need of improvement. I had several
puppies with nicely angulated rear structure, but due to
straight shoulders the side gait suffered. A few front ends
were all over the place coming forward, and a few rears
traveled close or cow-hocked. In all fairness,
Newfoundland puppies are not done till they’re done, and
much can improve as they grow. Or not.
My Best in Sweeps boy was strong in most areas, good
substance, pleasing head, and balanced front to rear. He
had a pretty side gait and came forward and went away
very well. I was also taken with my 6-9 puppy boy, very
well put together with a cute attitude. The BOS bitch was
also hard to fault, a very lovely girl I’d be proud to own.
The Veterans were terrific, every one of them. Good type,
movement and great attitude! I do love the oldies, but
these veterans looked far from old. My final three were of
such quality that the choice could have gone any way.

On the 7th of December 2014, I had the honor of judging the
Sweepstakes at the NCNE Regional Specialty. It was a
pleasure to see and examine all the puppies and veterans. I
was very impressed with the confidence of the young dogs,
some of them at a dog show for the first time. They were all
beautifully presented and seemed to enjoy their time in the
ring.
My Best in Sweeps “Nautica’s Three Dog Knight” was a
young male who impressed me the moment he came into the
ring. When the winners of the classes came into the ring, his
beautiful movement and excellent breed type earned him the
award for Best in Sweeps. My Best Opposite Sweeps went to
“Kodiak Acre’s Despicable Me”, a strong, beautiful young
female with a very bright future ahead of her. It was a true
pleasure to see all these impressive young Newfoundlands.
I loved to see the Veterans running around the ring, looking
like they enjoyed every minute and definitely not showing
their age. My Best Veteran went to “GCH Longship’s New
England Patriot”, a strong, solid and very handsome male in
the 7-9 years class. The Best Opposite Veteran went to
“GCH Tempest’s Kilyka Girl Next Door”, a lovely female
who clearly had fun being in the ring again.
Thank you to NCNE for giving me the opportunity to judge
the Sweeps at their Specialty and to all the owners who
entered their promising puppies and young-at-heart veterans
under me.
