Commodore

Ahoy Folks!!! As we are coming into Spring, things are just picking up at the club. We just had our
Valentine’s Dinner/Dance and it was terrific. Shirley and crew did an outstanding job on the
decorations and the food was great.
Our upcoming events are the Cruise Out to Benicia on 2/26-28 and another Cruise Out to Willow
Berm 3/11-13. We also have the Dan O’Connor Memorial St. Patrick’s Day Dinner on 3/19. That same
Weekend we will be hosting 2 Cruise In Clubs as well, Benicia and Solano. So come on down and
show our fellow boaters some Pittsburg Yacht Club Hospitality.
Looking out a little further, don’t forget our Opening Day on the Delta, April 9, which will be our big
Membership Drive so please decorate your boats and come down for the blessing of the fleet. We will
be needing help so don’t hesitate to volunteer.
I would like to take a moment and say what a terrific job Carol Promessi has done in such a short time
as Port Captain and wish her a speedy recovery from her back surgery. As a result, Carol has had to
unfortunately resign her duties as Port Captain this year. That said, as usual, Carol had that covered
too, in that she convinced Samantha Fox to take over her duties before resigning. Thanks Carol, I
really appreciated that.
So let’s welcome Samantha to her role as Port Captain and give her any help that she needs.
That’s it for now, Happy and Safe Boating.
From Aloft
Vice Commodore
Mary Jo Sullivan
As the harbingers of Spring return to NorCal, it’s time for us PYC-er’s to emerge from our winter
“hibernation” and get ready for Spring on the Delta.
Mark your calendars and “get your game on” for Second Tuesday’s at PYC – a night filled with games,
tacos, and lots of laughs.
Try out Thursday’s with Rich Hardy at the PYC Helm and sample some of his bar nibbles with your
favorite adult beverage. You can also “tease your taste buds” with the club’s culinary capers on
Wednesday’s and Friday’s.
And doesn’t everyone have just a wee bit o’ Irish in ‘em when it comes to the “O’Schoenthaler’s” Annual
St. Patty’s Day Dinner on March 19th? You betcha!
Our volunteer bartenders are at the ready to top off these great events with your favorite frosty brew,
a glass of wine, or other bar favorites. So hop on down to the club and have some fun and frolic with
the PYC gang!
See you on the Delta!

Some sad news to start with: Robin Norberg's son passed away several weeks ago, we are sorry for
your loss Robin and send our deepest condolences to you and your family, our thoughts and prayers
are with you during this sad time.
Ralph and Jacqueline Tocci recently lost their long-time dog to cancer, sorry to hear of this; dogs are
a big part of the family and will truly be missed and hopefully the good memories will stay with you
both for years to come.
Carol Promessi had back surgery on Wednesday, February 17th, and we are happy to report that the
surgery was successful and wish her a speedy recovery and hope to see her back at the club again
soon.
Ben Blair's dad had quadruple bypass surgery several weeks ago and returned home several days later
and is recuperating and doing well.
This is all I have for this month, so until next month stay healthy and well.

General Meeting Minutes
Submitted by Marilyn Sperling
PYC Secretary
The February general meeting was brought to order by Commodore Ben Blair and he led the
membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. The January minutes were approved as published in the
Yeoman.
Commodore's Report: In a separate meeting, the Board of Directors accepted the resignation of Port
Captain Carol Promessi who is stepping down due to health reasons. Ben thanked her for a great job
getting cruise-ins on the 2016 calendar. After canvassing current officers, none wished to move into the
port captain position, therefore a past commodore and past port captain, Samantha Fox was
nominated from the floor. A motion was made by Rich Irwin that Samantha Fox takeover as Port
Captain for the remainder of 2016, seconded by Philip Mill, all in favor, motion passed.
Vice Commodore-Mary Jo Sullivan: See her column for full report.
Rear Commodore-Richard Dillon: Ben Blair/Rich Irwin are taking care of his duties.
Port Captain-Samantha Fox: See her Yeoman article for report.
Fleet Captain-Shirley Acosta: See her Yeoman article for full report.

Future Events: Valentine's Dinner Feb 14; Game Night March 8; St. Patrick's Day Dinner March 19.

(Gilbey's) from $3 to $3.50. Back Bar (Absolute) from $4 to $4.50. Domestic Beer from $2.50 to $3.

R.B.O.C. Report
Jack Michael ~ 2013 President
This month’s Report will be fairly brief!
The legislative year is just beginning with bills being introduced and your RBOC
Directors looking at the usual thousands of bills introduced in a Session. It will be
a month, or so, before we really know what we are facing.
We will be having a Board Meeting in Sacramento at the end of March along with
our Annual Legislative Day where our Directors meet with their Legislators and
the officers meet with the Legislators we believe will be key to addressing our
issues.
Since the publication timing of the Yeoman ends up being just a bit behind the
legislative process at this point, you can always go to the RBOC Website,
“rboc.org”, which we try to keep current, to see what is going on.
I reported last month that the San Francisco Boat Show had been postponed until
the end of April. Well, I must report this month that the Show has been cancelled
for 2016 and will be rescheduled for 2017, and by the time you read this the LA
Boat Show will be over!
Ralph Longfellow, San Diego, is the RBOC President for this year with Peter
Robertson, Sacramento YC, serving his second year as V.P. North. They and our
lobbyist have met with Lynn Sadler, the new Director of the Boating & Waterways
Division of the State Parks Department.
I and RBOC Director Dave Breninger will be accompanying Lynn on a Delta boat
tour before the end of February, to show her and discuss the many issues
associated with water hyacinth which we all face, particularly in the Delta!
Obviously, I’ll have more to report regarding our new Boating and Waterways
Division Chief next month!
Thank you for supporting RBOC!!

A boat decorated to theme and a boat decorated by youth and passengers on the committee boat. We
have already missed some possible points by low participation in the management conference.

VALENTINE’S DINNER
Report & Pics submitted by Shirley
We had a wonderful time, our PYC was decorated with Red Hearts and a beautiful dessert table.
Shirley & John made a big dart board heart out of balloons with a red balloon in the center and sold
3 darts for a $1.00, we gave out 15 prizes for members who popped the red balloon , what fun.
Then dinner was served, steak and Lobster, it was outstanding, seemed like everyone enjoyed it.
After dinner we played games and the highlight was the Not so Newly Wed Game,
the Fogleman’s won 1st place, Susan & Glen took 2nd and Denise & Shannon took 3rd place,
Than we danced the night away by DJ Charles.
I would like to thank Denise and Shannon for helping with setting up, Sharon and Jeanie for
folding the beautiful rose napkins and Lynn and Dave for help with clean up. Most of all I would
like to thank John, my partner for being so patient and helpful.
( Op Ed: way to go John)

Seven Safety Measures for
When You're at The Dock

You hear a lot about safety measures while boating, but boaters and their families spend a lot of
time on and around the docks, too. Just because you're not underway, doesn't mean safety isn't an
issue.
1. Kids should wear personal flotation devices (PFDs) on the docks. It only takes one slip to
fall in the water. Play it safe.
2. Everyone, both kids and adults, should wear boating or other non-slip shoes on the docks
and around the grounds of the marina.
3. Don't swim at the marina. This is a big one. Every year there are reports of people swimming
in marina waters and being electrocuted or suffering electrical burns. The problem occurs
when faulty wiring or electrical equipment on a boat releases electrical currents into the
water, causing potential injury or death to nearby swimmers. A second reason is that
swimmers at marinas are competing for space with boats—a most unfair competition.
Swimmers may not be seen soon enough to avoid a collision and/or they may make it tough
for the captain to maneuver his boat.
4. Keep the docks and your boat decks clear of personal gear. A misplaced shoe, a bottle of
cleaning fluid, a fishing pole or a small toy could cause someone to trip or fall into the water.
That cell phone or those car keys you set down for "just a second" are also at risk. They could
quite easily get kicked into the water.
5. Close hatches, covers and compartments on your boat before fueling and open them
afterwards.
6. Have a family fire drill, Plan for and practice safely exiting your boat and the dock in case of
fire.
7. Locate throwable PFDs and ladders when arriving at docks for future reference.
Note: Kudos to our Harbormaster. He is installing Ladders and throwable
PFDs throughout the marina. Make note of their location and how to use
them BEFORE YOU NEED THEM!
