Thank you to all who participated!
Frederick Road Fridays kicked off on June
10th. I attended this first event amazed and
proud of the size and success. It was the
biggest opening day to date! Teal, Kate and
Jackie from our Chamber office have worked
diligently with Dan Swearingen, our Freder-
ick Road Fridays Chairperson, and the rest of
the Frederick Road Fridays Committee, the
bands, the vendors, and the nonprofits to ensure this concert series goes through August
without a hitch! Please see the calendar of
bands and our wonderful list of sponsors.
On Sundays, don’t forget to come to the
BEST Farmers Market in Maryland. It is located at the 700 block of Frederick Road behind PNC Bank. We continue to have great
products and record crowds.
On June 16th, thanks to our Government
Relations Committee, Omar Jennings IV and
Jack Murphy, we had the pleasure of having
lunch with our elected officials to get a report
on the last legislative session. Please see
Omar’s article in this newsletter. Thank you
to everyone who attended.
Also, we are proud to announce that on
June 16th our Executive Director, Teal Cary,
was awarded a Community Service Award
from The Children’s Home during their 2016
Annual Meeting at Matthews’s 1600. No one
deserves this acknowledgement more than
Teal. She works hard for the Chamber and
our business community by constantly helping our businesses and civic organizations
connect with each other. Please help me
congratulate Teal!
These and other events continue to satisfy
our mission at the Catonsville Chamber of
Commerce. We are very fortunate to have so
many board members, chamber members
and outside volunteers who work hard to
ensure we keep developing the economics in
our wonderful town called Catonsville!!!

FRUSTRATIONS WE FACE EVERY DAY

P
hones are great. We can use them to
check the score of an Orioles game,
buy a last-minute birthday gift from
Amazon and have it delivered later that day,
check email, the weather, news and perhaps even take a phone call – or screen it.
But they are also the cause of one of the
greatest sources of frustration business
owners face every day: getting people to call back!
So what you do? Call and leave a voicemail again. And again.
And again. And again.
Here is a collection of some of the best methods we have used
with clients to get those important calls returned – and convert
prospects into customers.
Give them a reason to call you back. Ask yourself: How would
someone benefit from returning my call? Quit thinking about
what you want from the call and instead think about what your
prospect will gain by calling you back.
Leverage social media. Immediately after you leave a message,
invite the prospect to connect on LinkedIn or Facebook or Twitter. It’s another good way to stay in front of a prospect and give
the person a glimpse into who you are and what you do through
your profile and your posts. So that also begs the question: What
are you doing to keep your followers engaged on LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter? You don’t have to be cute or clever. The key, once
again, is to give people a reason to engage with you. One of the
best things you can do is share relevant information that your
followers will want to read.
Let them you don’t want to be a pest. “Hello, I’ve tried reaching
you several times. I don’t want to be a pest so if you decided not
to move forward, please let me know. Or, if you are still interested, let’s schedule a time that’s convenient for you to talk. I
know you’re busy. So if I don’t hear from you by Friday, I will follow up early next week.”
Send a surprise. If you’ve talked with the prospect in the past
and value that relationship, send a gift. One thing I like to do is
send books from Amazon to clients and prospects that I know
will appreciate it. For less than $20 you choose to send a favorite
book, giftwrapped by Amazon and sent to your prospect with a
short note from you. It gets opened every time and your prospect
will never forget you for it.
Send an article. We all come across articles that we know
someone else may appreciate. When you do, forward it to the
person via email with a short note: “Hi Mary, I saw this article
and thought you might appreciate it. Hope you find it useful.”
Send a cartoon. Whenever you come across a cartoon you

CHAMBER BOARD HOLDS
ANNUAL LEGISLATIVE
LUNCHEON
Omar Jennings IV,
Legislative Committee Chair
Regional Vice President-AXA Advisors
O
n June 16th at Matthew’s 1600, the
Government Relations Committee
hosted the annual luncheon where
our GCCC Board of Directors have a chance to
meet with the legislators that represent our
town and discuss the important issues that could affect the
residents and businesses in the area. In attendance were
County Councilman Tom Quirk, Sen. Ed Kasemeyer, Del. Terri
Hill, Del. Clarence Lam, Del. Eric Ebersole, Del. Patrick Young,
Del. Charles Sydnor, and Josh Hoffman from Sen. Shirley
Nathan-Pulliam’s office.
It's not surprising that since Catonsville is at the center of a
very diverse community that there are so many important issues that our legislators have to contend with. The meeting included updates by several of our lawmakers on topics such as
land use, veterans' affairs, privacy, mental health and addiction, education, liquor licensing, renewable energy and the
environment, and transportation (among others.) We are
grateful to all our local politicians for their hard work and for
the time they took to keep the Greater Catonsville Chamber of
Commerce up to date.
On behalf of the GCCC, I’d like to thank the individuals
above for attending and look forward to your partnership with
the Chamber going forward. For the residents and business
owners, if you would like to voice your opinion about these or
any other issues, please contact one of our representatives:

3RD EYE SURVEILLANCE EXPANDS-OPENING
MARYLAND AUTHORIZED1A FINGERPRINTING
I
t is always exciting to see the success
of a Chamber member business lead
to expanded services or the move to
larger office space. But it’s really a thrill
when both expansions happen at the
same time. That was the case for 3rd Eye
Surveillance.
3rd Eye Surveillance was started in
August of 2010 by Scott Spore and
Thomas Kowalski, focusing on residential
and commercial camera and alarm
systems. Over the years the business
expanded and grew through networking
and referrals. In January 2015, Steve
Kooser joined the team and brought
experience in construction to the
company’s installation services.
In October 2015, 3rd Eye Surveillance
moved into its current location on Hollins
Ferry Road with the intention of starting
a subsidiary to provide fingerprinting
services to the surrounding community.
On Wednesday, June 15, the Catonsville
Chamber along with the Northern
Arundel County Chamber participated in
an official ribbon-cutting and grand
opening of 3rd EyeSurveillance’s subsidiary, 1A Fingerprinting as well as a
christening of their new office space.
In May of 2016, 1A Fingerprinting was
authorized by the State of Maryland to
provide Livescan Fingerprinting services
to the public. The service now provides
Livescan Fingerprinting, Passport Photos,
and Notary Services from its Hollins Ferry
location. Currently 1A Fingerprinting is
open Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday from 10am to 7pm. No appointments are necessary, walk-ins welcome.
Customers can check the company’s
website, www.1afingerprinting.com, for
more information.

Executive Director, Teal Cary, as
one of its Community Service Award
winners for 2016. With the theme
“Unleash Your Awesome,” the Children’s
Home recognized the award winners at
the 2016 Annual Meeting on June 16 at
Matthew’s 1600. The Children’s Home
thanked Teal for her work at the Chamber providing outreach opportunities
and facilitating participation in events
such as the Frederick Road Fridays
concert series and the Catonsville Arts
& Crafts Festival. In addition, Gail Lee,
Director of Development, expressed
gratitude for Teal’s help in forging a
connection between The Children’s
Home and Lowe’s when the home improvement store was investigating ways
to reach out and support the community.
“In my job, I wear a lot of hats,” Teal
said, “but one of my favorite things to do
is to help build relationships among our
members. It was a pleasure for me to
facilitate the connection between Lowe’s
and the Children’s Home and I was
pleased that it benefitted both.”
As part of their community outreach
program, Lowe’s was looking for a means
to provide benefits to the community.
Since The Children’s Home serves such a
vital need in our area and requires a
great deal of resources to continue to
serve, it seemed like a natural connection. As part of facility renovations at the
Children’s Home, Lowe’s provided and
installed new flooring for free and also
painted the walls and even provided
extra paint for touch-ups in the future.
During the 2016 Annual Meeting, the
Children’s Home also granted Community Service Awards to The Wilkens

HOW CAN YOU DECLARE YOUR
FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE?
Matthew Dunigan
Edward Jones Financial Advisor
Contributing View Columnist
N
ext week, we observe the 4th of July with
sparklers, picnics and parades. And living
in a country that offers so much freedom,
we have a lot to celebrate. But on a more personal
level, you may still be working toward another
type of independence – financial independence.
What can you do to speed your progress toward this goal?
Here are some ideas to think about:
• Free yourself from excessive fear. As an investor, it’s not hard
to find something to fear. Oil prices, interest rates, political squabbles, even natural disasters – at any given time, each of these
factors (and many more) might be blamed for volatility in the
financial markets. In response, many people take a “time out” from
investing. Don’t let fear hold you back. It takes discipline and some
mental toughness to stay invested in all economic environments,
but if you’re constantly jumping in and out of the market, you’re
almost guaranteed to miss out on the kind of continuity and
opportunities you need to move toward your financial freedom.
• Liberate your investments’ growth potential. Many investors
avoid investing too aggressively, wishing to lower their risk level.
And that’s certainly not a bad idea. On the other hand, you can
easily slip into investing too “safely” by keeping the bulk of your
portfolio in investments that protect your principal but offer so
little in the way of return that they may not even keep up with inflation. So, try to always maintain a reasonable percentage of growthoriented vehicles in your portfolio. The exact amount may depend
on your age and tolerance for risk, but at virtually every stage of
your life, you need some growth potential.
• Avoid the tyranny of debt. It’s not easy to stay out of debt. But
carrying a heavy debt load is truly a burden – you’re not only
concerned about making the payments, but you’re also depriving
yourself of dollars that could be used to invest for your future. Try
to do everything you can to live within your means and avoid racking up more debt than is necessary. And when you do whittle down
your debts, put that “found” money to work. The more you put in
your investment portfolio, the more opportunities you have to
reach your objectives.
• Free your thinking about the future. Here’s another roadblock
on your journey toward financial independence: short-term thinking. Instead of seeking quick gains (which are notoriously hard to
achieve), strive for steady growth. Instead of reacting to the news of
the day by making impulsive moves, chart a long-term strategy
that’s appropriate for your needs, and stick to it. Instead of focusing
on the losses you might see on one month’s investment statement,
look back over the progress you’ve made over the last five or 10
years. In short, worry less about today – and plan for tomorrow.
It will take a lot of time, effort and patience to ultimately achieve
your own Financial Independence Day. But once you do, you’ll
have reason to rejoice – and you won’t even need the fireworks.
This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local
Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

place to get that report (to ensure that you are getting a free report) is from www.
annualcreditreport.com. In addition to getting your credit report and making
sure that everything on it is accurate, you want to know your FICO score. The
FICO score is a compilation of different pieces of credit data used by the three
credit companies (Experian, Trans-Union, and Equifax) to create a single score.
Using www.myfico.com is a great place to learn about the score and how it used.
By the way, I am never too busy for your referrals!

SOLUTIONS FOR ONE OF THE BIGGEST
FRUSTRATIONS WE FACE EVERY DAY
continued from page 4
IMPORTANT: You may notice a trend
here. We need to be willing to share something that a prospect may find interesting
enough for them to WANT to call you back.
Ask for help. It shows humility and most
people are willing to offer some help if
you’re nice about it, especially when talking with an administrative assistant.
“Hello, this is Dennis and I’m hoping you
can help me. I’m not sure who I should be
talking with but can I explain what I’m
looking for?” Now you have the person’s
attention. Then, when you are transferred
begin by saying, “Hello, I was just talking
with Larry and he suggested I talk with
you…”
Take advantage of the bizarre and
whacky holidays. There are several every
day. For example, in July, believe it or not,
we can look forward to these holidays: July
5 is Work-a-holics Day even though everyone else is on holiday, July 13 is Embrace
Your Geekness Day, July 14 is Pandemonium Day, July 23 is Hot Dog Day… and so
on. Send an email or a post on social

media with a picture in honor of one of
these whacky holidays and give your
prospect a good laugh. Use your imagination and have fun with it.
Send a letter in a trash can. Seriously. We
usually get at least 90% response with this
method. Print out a short letter on one
page with the headline: “I’ve sent you several messages and you must have put them
in the trash so this time I went ahead and
did it for you. But this is why you shouldn’t…” Crumple up the letter and stuff into a
small 4-inch by 4-inch trash can and send
it by mail in a box. It gets noticed every
time.
Last, not least … This is one of my favorites that was sent to me by a client who
was so impressed with a salesperson’s efforts to reach him that he had to pass it
along. And yes, the salesperson got the
meeting she wanted. To get his attention,
she sent this email…
Top 10 reasons why you haven’t called me
back
10
My voicemails are so boring that
you have permanently fallen
asleep.
9
8
You’ve become trapped by a file
cabinet and cannot reach a phone.
7
6
5
You think if we talk I’ll stop mailing
our company’s toys and your
collection will be incomplete.
You won the Powerball, quit your
job, and moved to Tahiti.
You accidentally deleted my
number…the last 100 times I called.
I’ve called you so many times that
you now think I’m a stalker and are
mildly concerned for your safety.
4
3
You lost your voice for the past
several months.
You’re moonlighting as Batman and
are too exhausted from fighting
crime to pick up the phone.
2
You’ve had a hot hand at the craps
table and you “never ever leave a
heater.”
1
You think I’m trying to sell you
____________. (Add what people
mistakenly think you’re trying to sell
them. Have fun with it.)
In all seriousness, I would love the
opportunity to come out and introduce
myself and speak a little about our
program if you are free for 30 minutes on
day, date and time. Please let me know if
that works in your schedule. Thanks for your
time.
I absolutely love it! Be willing to take a
risk. Have fun and show some personality. I
often say, “People do business with people
they trust. And they trust people they like.”
Your first step is to get people to like you
and want to call you back. The best way to
begin is to be humble and friendly.
Have other breakthroughs to get people
to call you back? I would love to hear about
it. Send them to me at [email protected]
