The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on the first
Sunday at the 11:30 AM Mass. No Baptisms are
celebrated during Lent. Parent preparation is required.
The parent meeting for Baptism is generally on the first
Monday of the month at 7:00 PM. Please call the Parish

the date(s) you would like the article to run. Every effort
will be made to see that your request is granted.
As a general rule, we encourage using “bulletin space”
instead of a separate insert whenever possible—–this
saves the cost of printing. The following guidelines
should be observed if an insert is necessary:A proposed
insert must be submitted for approval prior to bulletin
insertion weekend. Approved inserts must be delivered
by Thursday to the Parish Office.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

The Meaning of Apologetics
"Apologetics" is derived from the Greek root word
apologia. In ancient Greece it referred to a formal defense of a
belief, an explanation or argument for one’s philosophy or
religion. The word occurs several times in the New Testament,
including sections of the Gospels, seeking to persuade
unbelievers of the truth claims of the Church, especially the
unique nature of the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Standing before a tribunal in Jerusalem, the imprisoned
Paul states, "Brethren and fathers, hear my defense [apologia]
which I now offer to you" (Acts 22:1). In his epistle to the
Philippians the Apostle to the Gentiles states that one of his
tasks was to make a "defense of the Gospel." Perhaps the bestknown appearance of the word in the Bible is in Peter’s first
epistle: "Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who
calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with
gentleness and reverence" (1 Peter 3:15).
Catholic apologetics is the defense and explanation of the
teachings, beliefs, and practices of the Catholic Church. Its goal
is to remove objections, shed light on difficult or misunderstood
matters, and ultimately help win minds and souls for Jesus
Christ. Apologetics is the activity of helping people answer the
question: "Why should I be Catholic?" It does so by engaging
the mind to reach the heart.

St. Pius X Youth Ministry
Girls Night Out: Pool Party & Guys Night In: Video Games
On Monday, January 18, Martin Luther King Day, 6:30-9 pm,
girls in the youth group will be carpooling to the Addison Park
District Club Fitness and having a Pool Party. Girls, please
bring a swimsuit, towel, and $10. While this is happening, guys
will be in the Social Center at St. Pius X playing video games.
Guys, please bring video game systems, cords, controllers, and
(not rated M) games.
Winter Jam Concert
On Friday, January 29, from 4:30-11:45 pm, the youth group
will be going to the annual Winter Jam Concert at the Allstate
Arena. The cost is only $10. The concert features popular
Christian artists such as For King & Country, Matthew West,
Crowder, Lauren Daigle, Red, and Sidewalk Prophets! The cost
is only $10. We'll meet at St. Pius X at 4:30 for carpooling and
be back at the church around 11:45 pm. Did I mention that it's
only $10!
New Faith Growing Groups Study Program
Faith Growing Groups are forming this month
to learn about the 7 Deadly Sins during Lent
using the program “Seven Deadly Sins, Seven
Lively Virtues” presented by Bishop Robert
Barron. Folks can sign up for the 8 week full
study which will begin the week of
January 24, or the 5 week lite study which will
begin the week of February 14. Both groups
will finish before Holy Week. Group meetings
will be offered in homes as well as at the
Parish, during the morning and in the evening.
Sign-ups will be offered after Masses this weekend (January 16/17). The cost for the program is $17. Thanks to all who completed
surveys in December to help us organize this study to meet your needs. Survey participants still need to register for the study.

OVERVIEW - DIOCESAN/ST. PIUS X UNIFIED PASTORAL PLAN
In 2012 St. Pius X parishioners gathered to develop a Parish Pastoral Plan
based on the seven elements of parish life: Worship, Community,
Leadership, Word, Evangelization, Service and Stewardship. Since that
time, there have been many successes as we have worked to implement the
goals and objectives that were identified. During that same period, the plan
was fine tuned to reflect the evolving needs of the parish.
OVERVIEW –
DIOCESAN
Three Pillars of the
Diocesan Pastoral Plan
DISCIPLESHIP:
Catholic discipleship means
encountering Jesus Christ within
and through the Church. We strive
to learn more about Jesus, receiving
him fully in our lives and taking
seriously our responsibility to share
His love with others.
Then, in 2015 the Diocese of Joliet presented their Framework for Pastoral
Action: Discipleship, Evangelization and Charity. This diocesan plan
reflects the desired objectives of this Holy Year of Mercy when Pope
Francis calls on us to rediscover the work of the Father through acts of
mercy, kindness and forgiveness.
It also mirrors some of the basic principles of our St. Pius X Parish
Pastoral Plan. Because these plans parallel one another, our Pastoral
Council formulated an integrated plan: the Diocesan/St. Pius X Unified
Pastoral Plan, designed to help our parish fully participate in this Holy
Year of Mercy.
An Overview of the unified plan is presented here. Not only does it reveal
the relationship between the plans, it also sets forth specific ways to fulfill
their common goals/aims. Informing you about this plan is only the first
step. A plan, no matter how well intentioned, doesn’t bring about results. It
is what happens next that matters. That’s where we all can make a
difference.
Over the next several months, our parish ministries will be working on
specific goals related to each of the three pillars: Pillar I – Discipleship;
Pillar II – Evangelization; Pillar III - Charity. In the coming weeks, we will
publish an in-depth look at the first pillar — Discipleship: what our parish
already does to promote it; and what we need to do to make progress.
Periodic progress reports will be published in upcoming issues of the
weekly bulletin. We ask that you not only pray for success in reaching our
goals, but that you answer the invitation to follow the example of our Father
by loving and forgiving without limits.

annual Guide Book and Directory for the
church. This book will contain the Who,
What, When, Where, Why, and How of
our parish. This book is being provided
and direct-mailed to each family at no cost
to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local
businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and
would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call

Guide book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would
rather patronize a Guide Book and Directory advertiser over a
non-advertiser. It “does pay” to advertise in our new Guide
Book & Directory.
The Elizabeth Ministry
Annual Bake Sale

We Need Your Help!
The Elizabeth Ministry is having its Annual
Bake Sale the weekend of January 30/31
after all Masses. To make this a successful
event, we are asking for both parish and school support. This
major fundraiser supports our Elizabeth Ministry outreach and
many programs including celebration gift bags for new baby/
baptism and pregnancy. Won’t you please consider making a
batch of cookies or a cake to help support the ministry we do?
Baked goods can be dropped off between 2:30 pm and 5 pm on
Saturday, January 30 in the Shepherds’ Hall at tables provided.

unidad abarca la variedad o pluralidad y ésta es el contenido de la
unidad de la iglesia. Nada más extraño a esta unidad, que viene
de Dios, que la uniformidad a la que se empeñan en someternos

The 2016 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal begins with a mailing that many of our
parishioners have received or will soon receive. This is a mailing from Bishop Conlon asking
for a pledge to the 2016 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal.
The Appeal not only funds many of the operations of the diocese, it funds services that are of
great help to the ministries here in our parish.
This year, the theme of the Appeal is “Chosen by God’s Grace.” What a wonderful thought!
The Almighty God of the Universe has chosen you, His precious child. Can you imagine
anything more unbelievable than being “Chosen by God’s Grace”? God has a destiny for
you. His plan for you is as individual as you are. You have been uniquely created for a
purpose and God wants to see you passionately live His plan out.
How do we acknowledge God’s Grace and show Him our gratitude? One way that we can
show our gratitude is by giving back to God the gifts He shared with us. We can support our
parish, our diocese and the Church throughout the world with gifts of time, talent and
treasure. The gifts we give enable ministries, education, and services that touch thousands of
lives.
Our parish goal is $64,489. With your financial support, we can exceed this goal. When we
exceed our goal in paid pledges, we will receive 65% of the amount over goal for use in our
