CONTENTS
Welcome to our islands and our home. We take great
pride in the history, culture and beauty that surrounds us
in paradise, and we enjoy sharing it with others. There
are so many wonderful opportunities for sightseeing,
relaxing, shopping and enjoying oneself in our beautiful
tropical islands. It’s great to hear about a family’s
adventures kayaking together around one of our bays,
a couple watching a sunset together on the beach or a
group of friends shopping in our historic towns or visiting
one of our historic monuments. We know the magic of
these islands, and it gives us great pleasure when others
discover it.
We are happy to be the chosen destination of so many
travelers, whether from the Caribbean or other locations
near and far. As a Territory of the United States, we
are uniquely able to offer all the exotic flavors of the
Caribbean with the assuring familiarity of the United
States. In the USVI, U.S. Citizens don’t even need to bring
a passport; only a smile and your sunscreen are required.
We are happy to welcome you to our islands and hope
that your unscripted experience here will bring you back
again and again.

PARADISE FOUND
Let go of ordinary and embrace fantasy in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Our white sand beaches
inspire relaxation, steady trade winds keep the average temperature at a balmy 80º, and the
diverse beauty of St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas gives you every opportunity to create
your own idea of paradise.
TOP REASONS TO GO TO THE USVI
SHOP, SHOP, SHOP!
The USVI has been a “shopping” destination since 1607! Before arriving in presentday Virginia, the Jamestown settlers (who built the first successful English settlement
in North America) stopped off in Charlotte Amalie to stock up on supplies. Discover
the unique products each island has to offer and spend up to $1,600 duty-free!
WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE
The USVI is the only U.S. Territory that is bordered by both the Atlantic Ocean and the
Caribbean Sea. With all that water, it’s only natural to find so many beautiful beaches.
Not to mention endless water activities — diving, sailing, kayaking, sport fishing,
snorkeling, windsurfing, parasailing and kite boarding, to name a few.
A TRIO OF FANTASTIC CARNIVALS & FESTIVALS
It’s the biggest party of the year times three! Food, drink, music and masquerading!
St. Croix’s Christmas Festival starts in December. St. Thomas’s carnival culminates in
the final week of April. St. John’s celebration begins in June and runs through Fourth of
July week.
BEST RUMS IN THE CARIBBEAN
With the legendary Cruzan Rum and Captain Morgan Rum both being produced in the
USVI, visitors have the opportunity to visit the local distilleries and learn the secrets of
making the finest rums in the world.
EASE OF ACCESS
With non-stop service available from most major carriers, the USVI can be reached from
the U.S. mainland in as quickly as two and a half hours. With no passport required for
U.S. citizens, English being the language spoken and the U.S. dollar as official currency,
your hassle-free vacation is within easy reach.

take a stroll back in time
Journey to a faraway place — the past. Over the years, explorers, pirates, kings and queens have all sought

Visit the historic towns, old plantations,
fortS, CHURCHES and sugar mills that
make up the rich history of the uSVI
Our forts were built to fend
off pirates. You, however, are
encouraged to visit.
Our islands have many forts, built to protect
our precious shores from the onslaught of
pirates. They also served as courthouses,
prisons, and as places for religious services.
Visit Fort Christiansvaern or Fort Frederik on St.
Croix, Fort Christian on St. Thomas, Fortsberg
in St. John or Water Island’s Fort Segarra.
They aren’t just buildings.
They’re iconic landmarks in
colonial history.
Constructed in 1867 as the meeting place
for the Danish Colonial Council, St. Thomas
Government House serves today as the
Governor’s Office. On St. Croix, Government
House illustrates the grandeur of Danish
buildings from the period in the West Indies
when sugar was king. This building is one of
the largest governor’s residences in the Lesser
Antilles, and visitors are welcome.
St. Croix
Whim Plantation Museum — With its original
early 18th Century plantation buildings
covering 12 acres of land, it is the oldest sugar
plantation museum in the Virgin Islands. The
fully restored windmill and sugar factory ruins
are open for you to explore. You can see
sugar cane growing nearby in one of the
plantation gardens.
Buddhoe Park — On July 3, 1848, “General
Buddhoe” Gottleib rallied more than 6,000
armed slaves at this park to demand freedom.
As a result, Governor Peter von Scholten
proclaimed the emancipation of the slaves on
this day. Located next to Fort Frederik Museum
in Frederiksted, the park contains a bronze bust
of the renowned slave rebellion leader.
6
Lord God of Saboath Lutheran Church —
Built in the 1740s, this Lutheran Church is
St. Croix’s oldest extant church. Originally the
Dutch Reformed Church, it was transferred to
the Lutheran Congregation in 1831, which is
now the Steeple Building. The most distinctive
feature is the neoclassical tower, built in 1834
and designed by Albert Lovmand, the official
Architect of the Danish Colonies at the time.
Holy Cross Catholic Church — Originally built
in 1755, Holy Cross was extensively altered in
the 1850s. It was built in the shape of a cross
to represent St. Croix, which means “holy
cross” in French. It is located on Queen Street
in Christiansted.
St. John
Annaberg Sugar Mill Ruins — Is one of several
of St. John’s plantations owned in the 1720s
and 1730s by Frederick Moth, the first Danish
Governor of St. Croix and, later, the Governor
General of the Danish West Indies. By the
early 19th century, Annaberg, one of St. John’s
biggest sugar producers, also produced
molasses and rum for export.
The Emmaus Moravian Church — Located
in Coral Bay, the church is on the List of
Registered Historic Places in the United States
Virgin Islands and holds an interesting place
in St. John’s history. It was the only church
allowed to minister to the slaves and was
instrumental in establishing Dutch Creole as
the language spoken between planters and
the enslaved Africans. The Church stands next
to the Caroline Estate plantation, the site of
a 1733 slave revolt that resulted in the murder
of the plantation owner and his 12-year-old
daughter. This church is said to be haunted.
St. Thomas
Camille Pissarro Building — The father of
French Impressionism, Camille Pissarro was
born and raised in Charlotte Amalie. His
childhood home is now an art gallery featuring
artwork from dozens of artists, including
Camille Pissarro himself.
Beracha Veshalom Vegmiluth Hasidim
Synagogue — Built in 1796 by Sephardic Jews,
the St. Thomas Synagogue is one of the oldest
synagogues in the Western Hemisphere. People
of all faiths are welcome to visit the sand-floored
interior of this National Historic Landmark.
St. Thomas Reformed Church — The church
was established around 1660, and is one of
the oldest congregations in the Virgin Islands.
Organized by Dutch traders as the St. Thomas
Protestant Reformed Dutch Church, the first
church was built in the mid-1670s on the
savannah east of the Fort in the area known
as Barracks Yard. In the 1740s a new church
was built on Snegle Gade, which burned in
1804. A new church was immediately erected,
but was again destroyed by fire in 1806. The
cornerstone of the present church was laid
September 18, 1844, and completed and
consecrated on February 8, 1848.
Frederick Lutheran Church — Built in 1820 in a
combination of neo-classical and gothic revival
architecture, this historic church retains much
of its original character. Gracious steps and
an arched doorway greet visitors. The church
has an elaborate bell tower, lovely stained
glass windows and other historical features
that date back to the days when Denmark
owned the Virgin Islands. Since the Lutheran
Church was then the Danish state church, the
governor often filled in for the minister. Home
to the oldest Lutheran congregation in the
Virgin Islands, this revivalist style structure was
completed in 1844.
New Herrnhut Moravian Church — Missionary
Frederick Martin established this house of
worship in St. Thomas in 1737 after purchasing
a plantation on the east end of St. Thomas.
The plantation was named “New Herrnhut” in
honor of the Mother Church in Germany. It is
the Virgin Islands’ first Moravian Church.

V.I. Carnival (April - May)
V.I. Carnival in St. Thomas is the first Carnival of the year, usually
celebrated from mid-April to the beginning of May. It began in
1912 but didn’t become an annual event until 1952. Since that
time, the V.I. Carnival has been a time to reconnect with family
and friends and enjoy the captivating music, vivacious dance,
savory cuisine and spirited pageantry that make V.I. Carnival
the second most popular celebration in the Caribbean.
St. John Festival (June - July)
Set your inner
dancer free
Let the rhythm of carnival move you. In the USVI, it’s carnival all year long!
Dance to your heart’s delight as quelbe and calypso float through the
air. Try a Johnny Cake or a shellfish paté as you watch mocko jumbies
parade through the streets and steel pan bands battle to see who will
take the crown at Panorama. Each year brings with it new foods, exciting
performances, vibrant parades and colorful costumes. Take in one or all
three of our lively festivals, each offering its own unique experience.
10
Carnival in St. John combines the excitement of carnival with the
spirit of emancipation. July 3, 1848, marks the date slaves were
emancipated in the USVI. In honor of the USVI’s independence,
the St. John Festival takes place in late June and traditionally
culminates on July 4th. It’s an exciting time of year, as Cruz Bay
becomes hopping with life, and the ferries between St. Thomas
and St. John are filled with Carnival revellers. Don’t miss special
events like the opening of the village, the food fair, the parade or
the exciting 4th of July fireworks display.
Crucian Christmas Festival (December - January)
Experience the rich heritage and culture St. Croix has to offer
during the Crucian Christmas Festival. Started in 1954, this
festival is celebrated from December through New Year’s.
Delicious culinary treats are yours to enjoy as carnival participants
are adorned in an endless variety of madras colors and patterns.
The festivities are spread throughout “Twin City,” so be sure to
visit both Christiansted and Frederiksted.

Dive into the waters of the USVI and experience a world like you’ve
never seen before. Swim alongside breathtaking corals. Weave through
an untouched shipwreck. Choose from a variety of diving options, each
as beautiful as the last. Some examples of the exciting dive options are
listed below:
CANE BAY
Some of the best diving in the U.S. Virgin Islands is along the wall that runs parallel to
the North Shore of St. Croix. The wall at Cane Bay is the most popular site because it is
easy to get to from the beach and even easier by boat. Covered in plate corals, elephant
ear sponges and black coral, the wall starts at 60 feet and goes down to over 2,000 feet!
Where diversity
means every type
of dive imaginable
Schools of horse-eyed jacks are common along the wall and so are a reef shark or two.
In the shallows of Cane Bay you can find large gray angelfish, schools of black durgon,
stingrays, and even the occasional seahorse.
CARVAL ROCK
Carval Rock is best known for its dramatic and beautiful rock formations loaded with a
rainbow-like assortment of corals, sponges and gorgonians. At the base of the rocks, you’ll
notice a passageway that will take you through to the other side of the rock, where you
might catch a glimpse of a dozen or so shiny tarpon feeding on schools of silversides.
Our warm, turquoise waters are filled with exotic creatures and colorful marine life in a
diversity of dive locales. Fill your logbook with wall, wreck, night and reef dives done
by boat or from the shore. And do it all under the safe, strict control of U.S. waters.
WRECK OF THE WIT SHOAL II
Located in 90 feet of water off the Southwest coast of St. Thomas, the 328 foot WIT Shoal II
was once an armed military cargo ship (LST 467) designed to transport and land up to
20 tanks during World War II. There are five different levels to explore with a wide variety
14
of entries and exits, including the coral-encrusted smoke stacks.
15
There’s a reason
people have been
sailing these shores
since 1493
Our year-round warm weather, steady breezes, well-marked and deep anchorages, and plentiful
moorings make the USVI an ideal place for yachting. And with so many islands and cays in close
proximity, island hopping is easy and fun. The USVI offers many full-service marinas, providing
everything from water and power to designer shopping, fine dining, provisioning, fuel and repairs.

CHARLOTTE AMALIE The first permanent
European settlement on St. Thomas island
was established in 1672 after the arrival
of the Danish West India and Guinea
Company. The town was named in honor of
Denmark’s Queen. An accidental misspelling
on a map changed the name of the town to
Charlotte Amalie after the U.S. acquisition
of the islands. During the 17th Century, the
settlement and harbor were known as safe
havens for pirates and other infamous men,
the likes of Jean Hamlin, Bartholomew Sharp,
“Tempest” Roberts and Captain Kidd. During
the early 19th-Century Napoleonic Wars,
the British occupied the island, and later,
during the American Civil War, Confederate
blockade runners briefly used Charlotte
Amalie as a base. Today, the Charlotte

and sites that represent the town’s history
and is considered the shopping capital of the

Red Hook’s atmosphere is very relaxed. Here you
will find an array of activities to keep you occupied.
You will find everything from an apothecary to a

Town of Christiansted The island’s largest town,
Christiansted, is located on the northeastern part of
St. Croix. Here, visitors will find a variety of shops, art
galleries, restaurants and bars, as well as historical
buildings, churches and a Danish fort. A welcome
center at the Government House provides visitor
information. The National Park Service also operates
a visitor center next to Fort Christiansvaern. The town
boasts handmade jewelry, fine china, perfumes and
clothing boutiques, colorful glassware, along with
wood and metal works. And don’t forget to take back
a bit of the island’s spirit, with up to six bottles of

great local pub fare. Either way, you’re sure to find something
for your palate. Experienced chefs offer a delicious selection of
continental cuisine, French, Italian and Caribbean.

perfection.
When frequent visitors or residents are asked to name their
favorite restaurant on St. Thomas, the answer is never limited to
one place. Here, world-renowned chefs are as plentiful as the
seas that provide much of their menu. Mouth-watering entrees
range from continental cuisine to French, Chinese, Japanese,
Caribbean, Italian and Mexican, just to name a few. Dine along
the hillsides above Historic Charlotte Amalie for spectacular
night views of the harbor. Or hit up popular Frenchtown and
Red Hook.

It’s not just
your day,
it’s your world
Release your inner beauty. Whether you’re planning your wedding, honeymoon or a romantic
getaway, the U.S. Virgin Islands offer a far-off setting where you can get closer together. Our
turquoise waters and white sand beaches provide the perfect setting for any love story.
With sunsets that sparkle the imagination and views that
delight the mind, spirit and body, there’s romance around
every corner in the magical U.S. Virgin Islands. Gorgeous
wedding destinations, private honeymoon suites, expert
wedding planners — the USVI is the perfect place for the
romance of a lifetime.
ST. CROIX
In laid-back St. Croix, your wedding — or your romantic rendevous
— can take place anywhere, and any way, you want. On a secluded
beach. To the soundtrack of steel pan music. On a sailboat. From
the elaborate to the simple, whatever your dream scenario is, it can
happen on St. Croix.
ST. JOHN
St. John offers an island wedding at its most unique. Elope in style
at historic Annaberg Plantation, scenic Hawksnest Beach, or under a
gazebo overlooking the beach. Spend your honeymoon in a private
villa, or simply grab your better half and treat yourselves to pampering
at its finest on one of St. John’s exquisite resorts.

Romance abounds in St. Thomas. One of the most popular
honeymoon/wedding spots in the Caribbean — and the world — is
also the perfect place to celebrate that special anniversary. It’s a
romantic’s paradise. Plan a wedding here and begin your new life
amid a chorus of ocean breezes, with white sand in your toes and a
sparkle in your eyes. From saying “I do” at sunset amid a private villa,
to renewing your vows right in front of the incoming tide, you’re bound
to find true romance in St. Thomas.

Ras Lamumba is a master gardener, herbalist, naturalist and environmentalist. In 1978, Ras Lamumba began conducting tours, teaching gardening
and the use of medicinal plants of the rainforest. Each Eco Hike will include a rambling informal lecture based on the more colorful appellations by
which they are known in the Caribbean. You will also get a bit of history and island culture and folklore as Ras Lamumba traverses the hiking paths.
The Annaly Bay, Jack & Isaac’s Bay and the Heights of St. Croix Hikes showcase everything from the exceptional natural tide pools to the highest
peaks of the island.

The establishment of the Lawaetz clan on St. Croix is a romantic tale, a mixture of dreams, optimism and vision. The Carl and Marie Lawaetz
Family Museum, at Estate Little La Grange, tells the story of this prominent Danish-Crucian family. Through expertly guided tours, visitors
learn about Carl and Marie Nyeborg Lawaetz, their seven children and their experiences since the first half of the twentieth century. Original art,
furnishings, photographs and family memorabilia fill the house, making it easy for visitors to imagine life in the Lawaetz family household at the
turn of the Twentieth Century. The lush gardens offer magnificent examples of native trees, plants and flowers.

economy and way of life at Christiansted between the years 1733 and 1917. The park preserves five buildings within the historic site. They are
Fort Christiansvaern (1749), Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse (1749), the Steeple Building (1753), the Custom House (1841) and
the Scale House (1856). The Government House is part of the historic site, but it was turned over to the Government of the Virgin Islands in 1984.
The Government House dates back to 1747.
