SEASON PREVIEW
For the Saint Joseph’s golf team, the 2008-09 season is one
filled with high expectations. Returning four of its top five scorers,
including Atlantic 10 All-Conference honoree sophomore Josh
Webb, Hawk head coach Bob Lynch will combine his experienced
group of seven veterans with three highly touted freshmen to post
some of the best five-man squads in recent SJU history.
“We have a very cohesive group that will play to our strengths
this season,” Lynch said. “However, we understand that this a
younger team that hasn’t had as much experience as some of the
other teams we will face. Still, I believe we can finish in the top 10 of
every tournament.”
Leading the way for the Hawks this year are senior Steve
Hudacek and junior Zach Smith. The duo, serving as team co-captains for 2008-09, competed in all but two matches last season for
the Hawks.
A co-captain a season ago, Hudacek has steadily improved over
his three years at Saint Joseph’s. Competing in a career-high 23
rounds last season, he ranked fifth in scoring average (78.2 strokesper-round) and tied for 49th at the Atlantic 10 Championship.
Playing all 28 rounds in 2007-08, Smith carded a career-best
76.6 strokes-per-round average as a sophomore. Leading the team
in scoring at five tournaments, he posted a season-best tie for 12th
at the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic and tied for 32nd at the Atlantic
10 Championship.
“Steve and Zach are quiet leaders, but at the same time our
younger guys look to them for guidance,” said Lynch. “On the
course, they need to continue the good play they showed over the
summer.”
Making an immediate impact as a rookie, Webb came on strong
in the spring after playing in just two tournaments in the fall. Tied for
third in average at 77.1 strokes-per-round, Webb saved his best
rounds for the Atlantic 10 Championship, carding a three-round
score of 70-76-69/215 to finish tied for 10th and earn All-Conference
accolades.
“Josh is one of our steadiest golfers,” Lynch said. “If he continues his consistent play, there is no reason he can’t repeat at A-10s
this year.”
Sophomore Josh Webb earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors
after finishing tied for 10th at last year’s conference tournament.
2
Junior Zach Smith is the Hawks’ returning leader in scoring after
posting a career-best 76.6 strokes-per-round average last year.
With two slots open on the five-man squad, the Hawks will have
good competition from junior Bill Macknis and sophomores Patrick
Devlin, Eric Mitchell, and Jim Ridgway for those starting positions.
Playing in 11 rounds last spring, Macknis was solid for Saint
Joseph’s and finished tied for third on the team in scoring. With a
year of experience under their belts, all three sophomores have the
ability to contribute, but need to stay consistent.
“Bill finished very strong last year. We just need him to stay
healthy,” said Lynch. “Now with a year of collegiate experience, the
sophomores need to be able to play solid for the full 36 or 54 holes.”
Adding depth to the Hawks are freshmen Jimmy Bea, Andrew
Jaskel and Kyle Sargis. A two-time Suburban One League Player of
the Year, Bea averaged 36.2 strokes-per-round as a senior at Council
Rock South, while both Jaskel and Sargis bring amateur playing
experience, having competed in the 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links
Championship and the 79th New England Amateur Championship,
respectively.
“The freshmen will all get their feet wet and I’m very excited
about their potential,” said Lynch.
Coming off an eighth-place finish at last year’s conference tournament, Lynch believes a strong performance from the Hawks could
lift them as high as third or fourth. It will be a challenge for the young
SJU team, especially with returning A-10 champions Charlotte earning preseason top-25 status, but Lynch knows his team can compete
with the top teams in the conference.
“If we stay consistent and put together three good rounds, then
there is no reason Saint Joseph’s can’t be on the leaderboard.”
Saint Joseph’s University
LLANERCH COUNTRY CLUB
Scenic Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, Pa., has served as the home for the Saint
Joseph’s University golf team since 1959. Founded in 1919, Llanerch ranks as one of the finest
courses in the Delaware Valley. Taking on many shapes over the years, the current 18-hole configuration opened on April 27, 1949 and measures 6,482 yards with a par of 72.
Possessing a rich history, many of the nation’s best professionals have played on the
Llanerch links over the past 80 years. Arguably the biggest tournament to be played on the site
was the 1958 PGA Championship. Golf legend Dow Finsterwald captured the title that year with
a score of 276 for 72 holes. That tournament became particularly prominent because stroke play
format was used for the first time in PGA Championship history.
Other notable events hosted by the course include the Philadelphia Inquirer Invitational in
1945. Byron Nelson captured the title that year, posting the seventh of 11 consecutive tournament championships. It was also the site of the 1949 USGA Women’s Amateur Championship,
won by Dorothy Germain Porter.
Llanerch has also served as the host of the Philadelphia Amateur Championship three times
(1931, 1934 and 1998), as well as the Philadelphia Section PGA Championship five times (1940,
1941, 1942, 1943 and 1965).

THE HAWK
The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century.
One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint
Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die!”
Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At
that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More
than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin.
The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and
it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was
discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season.
The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 50-year history. It has been selected
as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street
& Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the
2008 Mascot Hall of Fame.

HEAD COACH
Bob Lynch
Head Coach
La Salle ‘79 - 21st Season
The 2003 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Bob Lynch is in his 21st year at the helm of the Saint Joseph’s
University golf program. During his tenure, he has led the Hawks back to prominence as one of the top
golf programs in the Northeast and coached 17 Hawks to A-10 All-Conference honors.
The architect of one of the region’s most demanding schedules, Lynch took the Saint Joseph’s program
to the cusp of its first-ever NCAA Championship berth in 2003 as the Hawks placed second at the
Atlantic 10 Championship. The Crimson and Gray’s previous best effort at A-10s was third place, a feat
the squad accomplished three straight seasons from 1993-95. He also guided the team to a berth in the
Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships each of those seasons.
In his career as head coach, Lynch has compiled an
overall record of 20 wins and 22 losses. The last dual meet competition for SJU was a
426-465 win over Lafayette at Llanerch Country Club during the 1992-93 season. Since
that time, SJU has competed solely in invitational events that have taken the Hawks all
over the country.
A former standout at Father Judge High School, Lynch is an avid golfer. The 51-year
old works for Spikes, a company that specializes in trophies and plaques. The
Richboro, Pa., resident also works as an official at high school and college basketball
games and works on the scorer’s table for both Saint Joseph’s men’s and women’s
basketball games. A 1979 graduate of La Salle University, Lynch and his wife Monica
are the parents of five children: Maureen, Bob, Dan, Brian, and Jim.

The Hawks started out the season at the Navy Invitational,
attempting to see who would be the leaders for SJU last season.
Sophomore Zach Smith led the charge in the opening tournament,
tying for 46th as Saint Joseph’s placed 15th.
Senior Colin Corrigan posted his first of two top-20 finishes at
the Cleveland State Invitational, while Smith tied for 12th at the

Competing locally at the Penn/Big 5 Classic, it was junior Steve
Hudacek who led the way for Saint Joseph’s, finishing tied for 30th,
with the Hawks placing 12th overall.
Smith led the charge for Saint Joseph’s in the final two matches of the season, helping the Hawks to an eighth-place tie at the
Georgetown Hoya Invitational and a tie for 19th at the Old
Dominion/Seascape Invitational. Smith carded a season-best 69 in
the final round of the Hoya Invitational, finishing tied for 24th, while
Corrigan and Webb finished tied with Smith at 59th in the seasonending match at Old Dominion.
All 10 Hawks opened the spring schedule competing at the Ft.
Lauderdale Classic, with Corrigan topping them all with a 16th-place
finish. Smith finished two strokes behind to post his second top-20
finish of the year as SJU placed fourth as a team.
After placing 11th at the First Bank Invitational, Saint Joseph’s
struggled over its next three outings, placing 17th at the Lacrosse
Homes Invitational, 15th at the Princeton Invitational and tied for
20th at the UVA Cavalier Classic. Despite the slow stretch, freshman
Jim Ridgway made national headlines for the Hawks, carding not
one, but two holes-in-one during Saturday’s first two rounds of the
Princeton Invite.
The Hawks turned in arguably their best performance of the year
at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships. As a team, Saint Joseph’s
placed eighth in the 12-team field, shooting a season-best 287 in the
final round. Making his first conference meet appearance, Webb
flourished, finishing tied for 10th and earning All-Conference honors.
Playing in his final collegiate match, Corrigan posted his best finish
at A-10s, tying for 27th.
Colin Corrigan posted a team-best 75.8 strokes-per-round average
last year and tied for 27th at 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships.

HISTORY
Golf has a long and storied tradition of success at Saint Joseph’s University.
One of the oldest athletic programs on campus, golf debuted as a varsity sport
in 1931.
The greatest player in the history of the Hawk golf program is John Truax
(’78). The only SJU golfer to ever earn All-America honors, he garnered
Honorable Mention status in 1978. Individually, he earned a berth in the NCAA
Championship Tournament as a sophomore, junior and senior. In 1977, Truax
John Truax
won the Fall ECAC Championship.
As a team, the Hawks’ greatest success came in the early 1960s and late 1970s. SJU won
the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships in both 1963 and 1964, while Truax led SJU powerhouses from 1975-78.
In 1982 Saint Joseph’s became a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. SJU turned in its
highest league finish in 2003, placing second overall. SJU previously placed third in 1993, 1994
and 1995.
The 1962-63 SJU golf team went 11-1 during the regular season, won the Middle
Atlantic Conference Title and qualified for
the NCAA Tournament. However, the team
decided not to go so that they could make
extra money working their summer jobs.
Left: Paul McDermitt (‘50) served as
captain of the SJU Golf team; he also
earned varsity letters in baseball, basketball, and track and field. He graduated with more letters than anyone in Saint
Joseph’s history, and was enshrined in
the SJU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.
Center Left: Mike (‘97) and Kevin (‘99)
McDermott earned Atlantic 10 AllConference honors a combined five
times during their years on Hawk Hill.
Younger brother Brian (‘04) also played
golf for the Hawks.
Right: Jason Buccino (‘95) was named
Atlantic 10 All-Conference in 1993 and
1995. Buccino, the McDermott brothers,
Mark Parisi (‘96) and Billy Stewart (‘06)
are the only Hawks to receive this honor
multiple times.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE
BERNADETTE V. MCGLADE
COMMISSIONER
Atlantic 10 Conference
230 South Broad Street
Suite 1700
Philadelphia, PA 19102
(215) 545-6678
Fax: (215) 545-3342
Web Site: www.atlantic10.org
On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is
now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school,
men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown
into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is
universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country.
That growth and prominence is a direct
result of the ideals and commitments of the
member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the
University of Dayton, Duquesne University,
Fordham
University,
The
George
Washington University, La Salle University,
University of Massachusetts, University of
North Carolina at Charlotte, University of
Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St.
Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's
University, Saint Louis University, Temple
University, and Xavier University.
On June 2, 2008, Bernadette V.
McGlade was named the fifth full-time commissioner in Conference history, replacing
Linda Bruno, who held the position for 13
years. McGlade’s experience in collegiate
athletics as a student-athlete, coach and
administrator spans more than thirty years.
"Bernadette's deep experience with
arguably the class-act athletic conference
[Atlantic Coast Conference] in the country
makes us incredibly excited to be bringing
her on board as commissioner of the
Atlantic 10 Conference," said Father Michael
Graham, Xavier University president and
president of the Atlantic 10 Presidents'
Council.
The presidents and chancellors of
Atlantic 10 institutions have made a strong
commitment to making the academic and
athletics equation work. Over the years, the
14
league membership has strived to better
recognize the academic accomplishments
of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's
Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10
student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 1,247 student-athletes in the Fall 2007 while 1,106 were
named to the Spring 2008 Honor Roll.
The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and
honors one student-athlete per sport as the
A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. In 200708, 192 student-athletes earned Academic
All-Conference recognition. Moreover, the
Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate
scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes.
The Atlantic 10 Conference had 34
teams among the 712 Division I sports
teams honored by the NCAA with public
recognition awards for their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate scores.
These teams posted multi-year APR scores
in the top 10 percent of all squads in their
respective sports. Saint Louis and Xavier
led the Atlantic 10 in the number of highperforming squads receiving awards with
six teams each. In twenty of the twenty-one
sports sponsored by the Atlantic 10, the
league's Academic Progress Rates (APR)
were at or above the conference average
nationally according to the most recent data
released by the NCAA.
Men’s swimming & diving standout
Brad Byars of Saint Louis was among 58
NCAA winter-sport student-athletes to earn
an educational grant for the upcoming academic year through the NCAA postgraduate
scholarship program. Byars will continue
his education at Saint Louis University
where he will pursue a Juris Doctorate and
Masters of Health Care Administration.
The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total
population of nearly 74 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states
and the District of Columbia, will crown
champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's
and women's cross country, field hockey,
men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and
women's indoor and outdoor track & field,
women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming
& diving, men's and women's tennis, and
women's volleyball.

THE UNIVERSITY
Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a
love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City
Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to
its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s
has continued to grow and change with the times.
The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal
campus location to produce successful students
who strive to make a good world even better.
Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,150 students. Graduate,
evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 7,400 students.
THE JESUIT TRADITION
OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Saint Joseph’s nationally -recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing
acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World
Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests
itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so
undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the
very best educational experience from trained
experts. One-on-one interaction between students
and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s.
A solid liberal arts curriculum provides
across-the-board learning for every student.
Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive
academic majors and learning facilities. The result
is a broad education that prepares students not
only for employment and graduate school, but for
life itself.
In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million
Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan
K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food
Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and
"Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art
distance learning technology, it is located near the
corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.
A HISTORY OF SERVICE
The students of Saint Joseph’s University are
dedicated to making today’s world even better. A
natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the
University’s community service programs to
become the most popular extracurricular activities
on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit
for their work outside the classroom.
SJU offers local, national and international
opportunities for student service. From North
16
Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from Tijuana,
Mexico, to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint
Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of
serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner
Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-inHand Festival for the handicapped are two annual
student-run events that draw thousands of special
visitors to campus for fun and friendship.
IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION
SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best
of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint
Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The
city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of
historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is
easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and
greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand.
The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the
literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s.
Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities
add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.
PHILADELPHIA
SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access
to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access
to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride
away.
SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as
well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the
Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy
of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the
new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia
Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting
for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS
Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of
placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs.
Part-time work and internships provide real-world
experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume
leadership positions.
An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their
employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the
health professions and in pre-law, assist students
who wish to further their schooling.
