Celebrating 120 Years
Since 1893, Helping Hand Home for Children has been transforming children’s lives.
The discovery of an infant girl at the Austin train station 120 years ago set in motion a
series of events that have impacted the lives of thousands of children for over a century.
Through the years, the Home has evolved from an orphanage to a children’s home that
provides therapeutic care, foster and adoption services as well as an on-site charter
school for children who have suffered severe abuse and neglect. Helping Hand Home has
provided hope and healing thanks to the support of a caring community who believed in
making a difference. As we achieve this milestone, we look back on lives touched through
120 years of nurturing care…

A Family’s Connection to Helping Hand Home

“It was June of 1948 and a very young mother lived with her two children, ages five and
two, in Central Austin. Her husband was suffering from post-war syndrome with the illness
manifesting itself as alcoholism and depression. She knew the situation was more than she
could handle, so the young mother sought treatment for her husband and faced the harsh
reality that she could not support her children. With a heavy heart and feelings of humiliation
and embarrassment, she took the children to Helping Hand Home and tearfully waived her
parental rights in hopes of giving them a safe and stable environment. The children were
loved and treated well by the women of the Home and lived there for two years until their
uncle discovered the children’s whereabouts. Even though they were safe, the uncle knew he
had to make a sacrifice for the sake of the children. In 1950, he and his young bride drove to
Helping Hand Home and brought the children to live with them. Once the children were with
the couple, the uncle began the process of reuniting them with their mother.
The first children’s home was located at 1905 Guadalupe
Street in Austin, Texas in the late 19th century.
How do I know the intimate details of this story? The children are my cousins and the young couple who welcomed them into their home was my parents. It is
no accident that I volunteer at the Home, nor is it a coincidence that I have been passionate about the Home long before I knew of this story. This is my story,
but it could be yours. We have all been called to serve, and my calling took me to Helping Hand Home. The Home has provided care and support to thousands of
children and families for over 120 years, and I have the privilege of being part of one of those families. I am thankful that the Home was here to provide for my

2012 was a year of exciting and positive changes for the Home, thanks to the generosity of many wonderful supporters. Last September, employees from David
Weekley Homes, who have been committed to HHH for over a decade, brought in dozens of volunteers to give the dining and recreation room a makeover. The
David Weekley team spent more than 85 hours volunteering and transformed the space into a warm and welcoming area where our children can experience the
joys of living in a family environment.

to our company’s purpose:“Building Dreams, Enhancing Lives.” We have been involved with the heroic people at Helping Hand Home for many years
sharing what this team does best….building things. We are honored to have become part of their family and cannot thank them enough for what they
do. I can’t think of a more worthy cause than stopping the horrible cycle of child abuse. If our work brings a smile to one of their fine staff members’

Other companies who helped make the room a reality include: Flooring Services Southwest, Mohawk, Seagull Lighting, Lighting Connection, ProBuild
Company, Cardell Cabinets, Parrish Cabinet Distributors, PPG Pittsburgh Paints, Builders Security Group, In Charge Electric, New World Drywall and Floyd’s Glass
Company. The rooms serve as the dining and family living areas for the 41 children who currently reside at HHH.
Helping Hand Home’s lobby also received some much needed updates thanks to
generous support from The LaNoe & Paul Scherer Family Foundation. In addition to the
lobby updates, a beautiful aquarium was added through donations to The Helping Hand
Home for Children Foundation in loving memory of Hayden Bowers.
Most recently, Helping Hand Home was honored to receive a major gift from Suzanne
McFayden Smith and the Zoelimax Foundation to redesign and landscape the Home’s
inner courtyard area. The transformed space now includes artificial turf, a play area for
exercising and outdoor games as well as picnic tables for the children to eat outside in
a fun and bright environment. This updated space has completely changed the outdoor
look and feel of the Home and will impact our children’s recreation needs for years to come.

KIDS HELPING KIDS
Eight-year-old Brooke Garner has raised over $1,200 for Helping Hand Home for
Children over the last year. Brooke is proof that philanthropy can start at
any age. Brooke shared with us her experience as a kid helping kids.
What have you done to raise money and awareness?
“I wanted to help other children, especially after my mom and dad talked to me
about how lucky I am to have all the things I do. The first thing I did was decide
that I didn’t want to get any birthday presents because I wanted the money to go
to HHH. My dad helped me make a website (www.tenderheartaustin.com) to help
other kids and families in case they wanted to do the same thing. I also have done
lemonade and hot chocolate stands to raise money. I plan on doing more of these,
plus maybe a community play and carwashes next year.”
What would you tell other children who are interested in helping others?
“I would tell other kids about how great it makes you feel. At first, my goal was
$500, and, when I reached that, I was doing cartwheels all over the house. So, I
made my next goal $1,000 and I did even more cartwheels when I reached that.
The cool thing is that even though I didn’t get any birthday presents or any of that
money, it made me feel good to know it was helping someone else.”
What would you tell the children at Helping Hand Home?
“I would tell the kids at HHH that even though I haven’t met you, I still hope that
you have a happy life.”

Happily Ever After: Four Girls Find Their Forever Family
December 5, 2012 was a very special day for Helping Hand Home and Josephine
and Scott Lansing, as it marked the adoption of their daughter, eleven-year-old
Bethany. This is the fourth adoption for the Lansings, and they are so excited
to officially welcome Bethany into their family – forever. When they began the
journey to adopt their first daughter, Cloe, five years ago, Josephine and Scott
never imagined they would eventually have a house full of girls. The couple later
adopted Josie in 2011 and Annabelle in 2012. Scott jokes that Josephine’s “Just
one more, honey” is a hard thing to say no to, and his heart always melts when
he sees a child in need of a loving family. Scott and Josephine
are tremendous

advocates for their children, and each child is special and precious and makes their
family complete.
Bethany entered into the care of Child Protective Services in February of 2009 due
to her mother’s inability to care for her and her siblings. She lived in a shelter for
several months before moving into a foster home. As many young children do,
Bethany struggled to understand why she was taken away from the only
family she had known. It was also difficult for her to trust adults, as she learned

from an early age that she could only count on herself. In May of 2010, Bethany
(adopted 2012), Josie (adopted 2011), and Cloe (adopted 2009)
was placed at Helping Hand Home for Children’s Residential Treatment Center where
her journey to healing finally began. With the patience, support, and guidance of the HHH staff, Bethany learned to trust again and developed healthy, appropriate
ways to express her emotions. She was taught to respect herself, and she learned that it was okay to trust others.
In June of 2012, Bethany was introduced to the Lansing family and the meeting did not go as smoothly as everyone had hoped. Bethany’s insecurities resurfaced
due to the trauma she experienced, and Bethany refused to talk or look at them. The Lansing family patiently sat with Bethany. The other girls shared their own
stories and explained how scared they had been about meeting a new family, too. Bethany’s anxiety eased and she agreed to go see her new home. Once there,
she became a new kid and never looked back.

Dear Friends,
With 2012 behind us, Helping Hand Home will be entering its 120th year of
service. HHH has adapted over the years to meet the growing needs of abused and
neglected children in the state of Texas. It all began when a group of women took
in an abandoned baby in 1893 and has grown into a state-of-the-art Residential
Treatment Center, Child Placing Agency and an on-site charter school. A dedicated
staff, extraordinary volunteers, and community support have made Helping Hand
Home what it is today.

Our team of professionals offers the highest quality of care to children — far above state minimum
requirements. We now have a sensory room where physical and occupational therapy take place. Within
our new continuum of care strategy we offer family therapy to foster homes and adoptive parents. This
has proven to increase the success of the transition from residential treatment center to home. That
is our goal for each child that we treat at HHH — that they are physically and emotional healthy and
prepared to enter into a family.

Bethany had an exciting summer of fun in the sun - hours
upon hours at the neighborhood pool and her first trip to
the beach. After the required six months in the home, the
Lansing family was very excited to consummate the adoption.
They celebrated their first official family Christmas with a
holiday cruise, another first for Bethany. She celebrated her
11th birthday at sea! Bethany has returned to HHH to visit
some of the staff members and friends, and the first thing
everyone comments on is her self confidence. This once
shy little girl afraid to trust and make eye contact is now a
secure, funny young lady who will talk your ear off.
