2014 ANNUAL REPORT A Letter from the President of the Board of Governors Dear Members and Friends, Hill-Stead Museum’s 2014 Annual Report recognizes and honors the generosity of those who have contributed to the success of the vibrant programs presented throughout the year. Hill-Stead takes pride in offering a unique and memorable cultural experience to every guest, both new and returning, and could not do so without the vital financial support it receives. Kathleen A. Jannuzzi, President, Board of Governors, and Susan Ballek, Executive Director and CEO, at the May 2014 benefit dinner auction. This past year, the museum served over 30,500 visitors at a wide range of on-site activities. Hill-Stead is fortunate to capture the attention of so many passionate patrons to support these efforts: members, annual fund contributors, corporate sponsors, and grant making organizations, including private foundations and arts and humanities funders. In addition, the State of Connecticut plays a key role in providing general operating and project support. At the heart of Hill-Stead are its volunteers. Their dedication and the unique skills they share throughout the year are nothing short of extraordinary. Volunteers help the museum present high quality cultural and educational programs, research and preserve the contents of the museum’s collection, engage the community in special events and fund raising activities, and maintain and interpret the gardens, meadows, and woodland trails of this 152 acre estate. • O ur faithful Museum Guides offer over 4,000 tours annually to students and adults, showcasing the 1901 Colonial Revival house and renowned collection of Impressionist paintings, decorative art and antiques. • The Hill-Steaders bring their tireless energy to gather new and returning faces in support of benefit events like May Market and the annual Dinner Auction, providing crucial funding towards year-round operations. • Hill-Stead’s Garden Gang ensures our Beatrix Farrand-designed Sunken Garden, a place of beauty and tranquility, is in fine form and full bloom during the warmer months of the year for visitors of all ages to enjoy. • Curatorial & Archives Volunteers assist staff in everything from cleaning and dusting precious objects in the period rooms to processing gifts of photographs and documents and assembling items for temporary exhibitions. • The Sunken Garden Poetry Festival’s Poetry Advisory Committee, new in 2014, has allowed our most popular public program to grow in many ways, resulting in richer humanities-based content for the public to enjoy. Gifts in all sizes, as well as donations of time and talent, make it possible for the museum to open its doors and grounds to the public year-round. Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities Edwardian era, Adam-style caned arm chairs were cleaned, waxed and their seats were reinforced before returning to view in the Second Library after a 15-year absence. Funded by Mr. & Mrs. William H. Watson Biedermier sofa (Austria, ca. 1820s), on view in the First Library, received new seat cushion padding and was re-upholstered in a gold damask comparable to the original “silk and linen damask, bow knot and flower pattern” fabric used throughout the library from Hill-Stead’s earliest days in 1901. Funded by Dr. & Mrs. Peter Jannuzzi in honor of Nancy B. Zwiener’s birthday GIFTS TO THE ARCHIVES Nine family photographs, seven illustration plates of Avon Old Farms School, and three articles about the school. Included were Theodate’s class picture from Miss Porter’s School, ca. 1888, and a photographic negative of Theodate and husband John W.
