FROM THE PASTOR
Dear People of CTK-Epiphany,
merciful care, she read the words of St. Paul to the church at
Rome:
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor
angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come,
nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in
all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of
God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom 8:38-9)
It was wonderful to see so many of you at worship Sunday, November 22, and to be surrounded by your love and support. As
you can imagine, it was a bit overwhelming for us to see so many
of you at once, and we regret not being able to greet each of you
personally. Thank you for holding us in your arms, and for singNever before had these words spoke so powerfully to us. Without

Carolyn lost a large amount of blood and briefly lost

all, as well as our mutual ministry at CTKEpiphany, you know how difficult it is for me
to step away for even a brief period of time.
Your efforts in my absence, and your continued participation and involvement with our

this time.

Finally, both Carolyn and I wish to express
our sincere thanks for all of your cards and
your generous offer of meals and other help.
We feel so much love and support, which is
helping us immensely during this difficult
time.
As we move into the Advent and Christmas
seasons, I thought it appropriate to provide a
more in-depth understanding of the hymn O
come, O come, Emmanuel (which can now be
found in the hymnals of most major
Protestant denominations and the Roman
Catholic Church).
Grace and peace,
Pastor Nathaniel

attached to the Magnificat at Vespers, December 17th through 23rd. For those
of you who enjoy word puzzles, notice how
the second word of each anitphon yields an
acrostic.

Read in reverse order you will see the letters
ERO CRAS - Latin for "I shall be present
tomorrow." Singing an anitphon each day
reveals its meaning on the day before Christmas Eve. A hymn based on five of these antiphons appeared in the Psalteriolum Cantionum Catholicarum in Cologne, 1710.
The 1982 version is based on a translation by
John Mason Neale - borrowing the text from
H. Daniel's Thesaurus Hymnologicus and
translated for his own Medieaveal Hymns and
Sequences in 1851. The original version began "Draw nigh, draw nigh, Emmanuel" and
was changed in 1861 to the present version
(first seen in the 1871 edition of the Hymnal). Two new stanzas were added for The
Hymnal 1940. Stanza 4 was altered again for
The Hymnal 1982.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION NEWS
The tune, Veni Emmanuel, first appeared in the
musical edition of the Hymnal Noted (London,
1854), where it was reported to have been taken from a French Missal in the National Library of Lisbon. Without definitive trace, the editor or
the Historical Edition of Hymns Ancient and Modern
concluded that the tune was probably a poetic work of
plainsong Kyrie melodies by Thomas Helmore.
Below is the schedule for December through February.
It wasn't until 1966 when Mother Thomas Moore announced finding the melody in a fifteenth-century Processional formerly belonging to French Franciscan nuns
- now housed at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. Both the accompaniment and alternative accompaniment of the 1982 versions were composed in 1975 by
Richard Proulx (first appearing in Worship II). Some
Lutherans use the tune St. Petersburg by Dmitry Bortniansky. In fact, alternate tunes are very common in the
German-speaking world, where the text originated.

Committee at Church of the Epiphany warmly

“CHANGE THE BABIES”
October 16, 2015
The following is a letter from The Episcopal Diocese
of Western Massachusetts.
Dear Friends at Epiphany,
ON THE ROAD TO
THE DIACONATE
The Province I Diaconate School
journeys on with a movement to tier
two. You may recall that our program is three tiered: retreats, on-line
education, and field work. Our first
retreat was in September, and the
next is scheduled in Rhode Island in
December. The on-line component
began on October 20th with the Old
Testament. Our New Testament
course was on November 12th. The
Reverends Alison Gruseke and Laura
Carlson were our instructors for the
Old Testament, and the Reverend
Matthew David Larsen provided insight into the New Testament. All
three instructors are doctoral students
at Yale University.
Since we announced the “Change the Babies” program
at last year’s convention, so many parishes have added
this worthy cause to their list of fundraising efforts.
We know there are so many people in need and resources go only so far. I am truly grateful for what
your parish has done to help the Babies Home. No gift
too small, no effort unappreciated, the Mampong
Babies Home will be able to do so much for these precious children because the Church in Western Massachusetts has set its heart on this task. From one who
has been there and seen their need, I thank you for
making a difference in the lives of children you will
never meet. May God bless you for the good you have
done in Christ’s name.

studies. Suffice to say, in two hours
we only scratched the surface.
Our Old Testament topics focused on
The Pentateuch (the first five books
of the Bible), the Prophets, and Wisdom Literature. It was quite interesting to note that Alison and Laura
read the Bible in the Hebrew language. Their joint presentation was
rich in history and a perspective
which challenged us to consider that the texts ask the questions that we are still concerned about in our modern
world. Thus, my earlier reference to seeing and looking for the
connection in all things.
What I appreciate most about the introduction we have been given to the
Old and New Testaments are the
homework assignments. Following
each course, we have been asked to
write 3-5 page papers making the
connection between biblical passages
of our own choosing and our sense of
calling to the diaconate. The
assignments give us an opportunity to “learn to see and look
for the connection in all
things”, while applying scriptural texts to our real world contexts.
The two hours we spent on-line with
Matthew were a fast-paced, whirlwind tour of the New Testament. He
