A note about our new catalog:
This year we decided to redesign our catalog. Featured in
this catalog are new products, best sellers, our personal
favorites, and items that we consider great values. You will
find icons on many of the products that mark them as NEW,
PRO, and VALUE items.

While I love to trout fish and
bird hunt, I find the mountains limiting. When I look
at a ridgeline I know that
in a short period of time,
be it a day, a week, or a
month, I can get to the top.
The beach is different for
me. When I look out in the
distance, the ocean seems
to go on forever. I’ve never been in the desert, but I suspect I
would have the same feeling. At first, the expansiveness seems
daunting, but after a short while it becomes intimate. The
feeling I get at the beach is one of infinite possibilities. Tom is a
freelance writer who lives on Cape Cod.

wanted to create a catalog that was more than just a list of
things to buy. Our goal was to incorporate a story and images
that had nothing to do with selling. Content that would not
distract from the products on the page but rather remind us
why we love to be in or on the water, even when the
conditions are less than comfortable. Diary of a Season: A Year
on the Cape, by Tom Keer is a story that any angler can
appreciate. Regardless of where you fish or what you fish for,
Tom’s story will make you think about the time you spend on
the water and what it is that draws us back to the water. The
words and images remind us that fishing is not just about
catching fish, it’s a state of mind and a way of being. Please let
us know what you think. We encourage your participation and
want to hear from you.

pring on the Cape is always worth the wait. I manage the
winters hunting sea ducks, midge fishing for trout on the kettle
ponds, and searching for a few salters in the Upper Cape
estuaries. I chart time by objects, such as when the lobster pot
buoys stop washing up on shore, and the high tides drag the
saltcord grass out to sea. Then one day I walk around a marsh
and the sand is beneath my feet and I know that it’s here.
Early to rise.
I don’t rely on the weatherman to say it’s spring. I just look
out my window. The winds start to waffle, blowing sometimes
from the North but more and more steadily from the South.
Southern winds bring warmth and push the Gulf Stream’s water
closer to shore. Evening temperatures change the most. Instead of
temperamental mood swings of 50-degree days followed by
15-degree nights, there is consistency. And on a warm night the
peepers peep. Peepers come out at twilight, and when I hear them,
I look westward. The sunsets change with the temperature, too,
and there is more orange and yellow than the previous purples,
blues and grays.
I walk around an estuary or a marsh. The birds are coming
back. There are Common, Black-back, and Laughing gulls, terns,
blue herons, and mallard and black ducks in these reaches. They’re
feeding on Glass Minnows. One year in late April, maybe in 2001
or 2002, my neighbor hung a 57-pound bass near the big rock. The
following year I was determined to get one myself. I fished every
day for three weeks. I fished from mid-flood to mid-ebb, all the
while looking for a cow of my own. I caught a lot of fish, mostly
schoolies, and several decent fish.
One Saturday I chose to take a break. My friend was getting
married and I decided I should go. It was a terrible day for a wedding, rainy, overcast, no wind, but it was a perfect day for fishing.

It seemed to me the big fish were running late, and I felt
a twinge of responsibility. I had second thoughts when I
passed my waders and rods on the porch. Call it a gut feel,
an intuition, whatever you want, I ignored it. I straightened
my tie, got into my truck, and made it to church with time to
spare. The service was wonderful, the reception rocked until
early in the morning, and if I were further than four miles
from home I’d have been in trouble.
I staggered up the porch to the front door. There, woven
through the screen with monofilament was a picture with a
caption: “52 pounds, 6 ounces.” I decided then and there: no
weddings when the big bass are in and no weddings during
bird season. If anyone wants me there badly enough, the
other 9 months are open.
Spring means herring. Blue and black-back sea herring for
sure, but alewives, too. The herring arrive much sooner than
the fishermen, and they first show themselves on the first full
moon in March. After the first schools arrive the striped bass
aren’t far behind.
There are many herring runs on the Cape, but none
so famous as the run on the Canal. I watch some daytime
anglers out and about, basking in the sixty-degree weather.
Then the sun starts to set and the bikes roll in.
Not Shovelheads, Softtails or Rice Burners, but women’s five-speed bikes with baskets on the front that are so big
they’d make the Wicked Witch of the West green with envy.
Ridden by old men. Some bikes have built in rod racks, others just a few strips of Velcro tape. Why a woman’s bike?
Ask an old timer and he’ll tell you.

“I can’t get my damn leg over the bar of a man’s bike
anymore,” he’ll say. “These waders don’t stretch much, or
maybe I don’t stretch much.”
Off to the flat.
They peddle and fish, and peddle and fish, and I know
when they stop without having to turn on a light. They
clamor down the rocks to the Canal, and the sound from their
cleats resembles a New Orleans Tap Dancer hustling for a
buck. Down to the water’s edge they go with the alacrity
of a Big Horn Sheep. At the water’s edge they cast into the
darkness, waiting for their line to go tight. They don’t have
to wait long because it is Spring.
Don’t even think about making a joke about the bike.
I saw it happen one time. Some guy with fancy new gear
made a wise crack about a man riding a woman’s bike.
Clearly a guy not using his noggin’. Anyone who fishes all
night, then goes to work, eats
dinner with his family, and comes back to fish deserves
respect.
“My daughter has a bike like that,” he said.
Early in the morning, the fella got back to his car to
drive to work. He made it about 5 yards before he realized he
had a flat tire. Then he realized he had four flat tires, a handheld gaff was still stuck in the front right wheel. I’m sure he
never poked fun like that again.
Fog. Thick, heavy, salty fog rolls in and covers the
Cape like a blanket. When the air becomes warmer than the
land there is moisture and lots of it. Fog is like a tourist.
Sometimes it comes from away, othertimes it comes from
around the bend, but I like it best when I can see it roll down
the coastline, a big bank of it.

It keeps coming until it engulfs me and my fishing buddies and my
boat. Fog to a fisherman is like Jonah and the Whale; it swallows
you up whole. I doubt my senses, I call reason into question, and
concern, if not Fear Itself, strikes my soul. Thank God for compasses.
I remember fishing on the bayside a few springs ago when a
thick fog dropped in for a visit. I was poking around on my boat,
checking out what kind of damage the Nor’easters had caused.
The rising temperature warmed my face, but it also made the water
seem much colder. Fog dumped in to the bay in seconds, and
channel markers, bouys, and land all disappeared. I put my throttle
in neutral, turned off the motor, and sat down.
Fog muffles sound. The bell and hooter bouys that were a few
hundred yards away seemed like they hitchhiked to the mainland.
A gulls’ cry became an echo. The wind sat down, and the fog
lasted for a while. I drifted with the current, reached for my
Thermos and poured a cup of black coffee.
Suddenly, geysers of water spouted everywhere. Blackfish!
All around the boat! Hundreds of them, working into the current,
surfacing, blowing water, and sounding. I was in the middle of
them and watched them come and go, up and down. The pod
drifted out to sea and then returned. American Indians,
Wampanoags mostly, believed that whales were Guardians of the
Sea, historical record keepers of sort, and that they beget creativity
and rebirth. Some would return later in the year, not more than a
few miles from here, and wash up on shore. In the past, settlers
descended on them and stripped them of their blubber.

Lefty Kreh designed the TiCr to be a fast action distance rod. Using titanium and
chromium to dampen shock and protect the rod from errant flies, it also integrates
oversized super hard titanium oxide guides, a cork grip, and alignment dots for
easy assembly. Smooth, powerful, and easy on the wallet. Both the 5 and 6 weight
are equipped with a braided aluminum and graphite reel seat.
A fast-action taper, smooth power curve, advanced rod making technology, and
an astonishing value defines the FLi. The balancing act of this rod means you’ll feel
the line load, but still control a trout on the run, and then wonder how they did it all
for the price. Sage didn’t scrimp on the details, including British-made snake guides
and Portuguese cork grips.
These rods are a blast. The TXL is ultra light without sacrificing power, and is
sensitive without giving up strength. Whisper thin snake guides, a micro stripping
guide and a unique round tip top keep the rod light while providing excellent line
control. There’s never been a lighter, more sensitive high-performance rod.
Walk softly and carry a big stick – or carry the TCR. This is the most powerful rod
available from anyone, anywhere. Made to withstand wind, carry line impossible
distances, and wrestle monster fish, the TCR may even be tougher than you are.
Crafted Winston from a boron/graphite composite, this rod loads easily to help you
get off a cast to a fish near the boat yet is capable of long casts over 100 feet. By
eliminating all unnecessary weight from the ferrules and using a graphite reel seat,
Winston has built a powerful rod that is almost an ounce lighter than most of its
competition.
The StreamDance GLX features the finest rod components available today and its
proprietary GLX graphite. These rods offer a versatile stiff action that allows you to
pinpoint your target. Offset oval sculptured barrel reel seat, California buckeye burl
inserts, and nickel-titanium recoil guides make this rod beautiful inside and out.
The 5 weight model comes with a standard trout reel seat while the 6 weight has a
small fighting butt, as pictured.

Nowadays they get put down by some animal rights group
and scuttled at sea, like some decrepit old battleship.
I recall another foggy spring day in Waquoit Bay several
years ago. Waquoit is a big saltpond on the Southside, a good
early season spot that loads up with herring. I met a man
adorned with clamshell earrings and a Redtail hawk feather
in his black ponytail. We were both catching lots and lots
of schoolies. Nothing big, but fun. He was a full-blooded
Wampanoag and he said his name was Phil.
“Your God-given name is Phil?” I asked.
“Actually, my real name is Little Scallop.”
“How’d you get that name?” I asked.
“My mom gave birth to me while she was scalloping,”
he said.
“You’re kidding,” I said. “Where were you born?”
“Over there,” he said.
“In Mashpee?”
“No, on the beach, right next to that Locust. She hit a
bay scallop motherlode and then her water broke.”

Racer bluefish arrive in the spring. I remember catching
my first racer a long time ago. In season the fish would’ve
weighed 18 pounds or so. Heck, it was 38 inches long. This
bluedog was a scant 8 pounds and a two-year old would’ve
put up more of a fight. It had a big head, wretched yellow
eyes, and it took forever to hook him up. The racers are finicky, not because they’re tough to catch but because they’re
tired. I think I would be, too, if I just finished a thousand
mile swim. After a week or so of rest they’ll find the squid
that comes in to feast on the glass minnows, the alewives
dropping out of the saltponds, and the silversides on the
sandy bottoms in about a dozen feet of water. They’ll come
out of their funk, I promise.
Flies de jour.
Big bass. Nothing like a big bass. I like the deepwater
bass the best, particularly when they’re covered with sea lice.
I like their colors, vibrant purples in sharp contrast with their
black backs. After they’ve been inshore for a while their
colors fade to a sandy brown. Natural camouflage to be sure,
but I like them when they’re cold and firm.

Going for the big guys? Lighter than most saltwater rods, the Xi2 can still throw tight loops and cut through wind to deliver
distance and accuracy, with plenty of lifting power. Whether you’re on the flats, inshore, or out on the open ocean, the Xi2’s are
always up to a challenge.
sage TCR
Walk softly and carry a big stick – or carry the Sage TCR. This is the most powerful rod available from anyone, anywhere. Made to
withstand wind, carry line impossible distances, and wrestle monster fish, the TCR may even be tougher than you are. Though
built for the experienced casting arm, it will improve any angler’s game when matched with Sage’s TCR line.
The Boron IIx, crafted by R.L. Winston from a boron/graphite composite, loads easily to help you get off a cast to a fish near the
boat, yet is capable of long casts over 100 feet. By eliminating all unnecessary weight from the ferrules and using a graphite reel
seat, Winston has built a powerful rod that is almost an ounce lighter than most of its competition. Fast action, accuracy, precision, and the craftsmanship that made Winston famous.
The finest rod components available today with proprietary GLX graphite. If you’ve ever cast a GLX rod, you know what we
mean. These rods pack a punch that can stand up to tough saltwater species, and are a joy to cast. An offset oval sculptured barrel reel seat and nickel-titanium recoil guides make this rod beautiful inside and out.

Then one day I notice what has been happening all along: change.
The layers I wear under my waders cause me to sweat. They no
longer keep me warm and instead, they make me overheat. From
here on in I can hang my fleece jackets and my wool long johns on
a peg in my basement until later in the season when the worm has
turned. Summer, finally, is here.

Summer:
Whenever I travel from home I pack a large, sea clam shell.
I place it next to my bed in the dump hotel I rent for the night.

Filling the shoes of the extremely popular Euro Series spey rods is a tall order.
The Z-Axis have done far more than replace their predecessors, they have set an
new standard for two-handed rods. Sage does it again. Try one, your only disappointment will be the sight of dust settling on your other spey rods.
Traditional style two-handed spey rods, these rods were designed to cast long
belly floating lines. The ultimate combination of power and grace. The Deveron
model features a special blend of graphic developed for premium performance
at a moderate price.

Just the right action for Scandinavian style spey casting, a powerful butt transitioning smoothly to a fast tip, capable of delivering razor loops. Designed to

this may be the one.

a good sunburn. I start the morning with the sweatshirt to
offset False Dawn’s chill, but when the sun pops I take it off
and enjoy the warmth. If you want to tell me about sunburns
or skin cancer, to talk to the hand. Ain’t nothin’ like the hot,
tight, salty feeling of roasted skin, except for maybe a little
aloe applied by my girls’ delicate hands.
In June, striped bass and bluefish roam the flats. On
windy days I can get up on ‘em, on calm days I need stealth.
I pack a day bag and go. Sometimes I take my boat, other
times my kayak, it all depends on the fish. I’ll figure out
an approach when I get to the flat, I let the fish do all the
dictating. I always toss in a bull rake and a scratcher. If the
fishing stinks, I might as well dig clams.
Fish on a flat are predictable. They follow the bait that
moves in and out with the tide. Sometimes they move into
the wind and sometimes they move with the wind. They drift
with the current when they’re bailing off a flat, but mostly
they move into the current. Every day is a new set of conditions and it’s my job to figure it out.
I spend my first hour of fishing puttering around. I stand
on the console of my Maritime Skiff and drive with my feet.
I do not cast to the first fish I see. I do not cast to the first
few schools I see. I watch them and figure out the pattern
du jour. Once I’ve got the drop on them, and figure out that
they’re holding in 2.3 feet of water moving into the current
on a 45-degree angle to the wind on the Southwest corner of
a point bar, I then pick up a rod. I make my first cast when I
get to the Southwest corner of every point bar, am in 2.3 feet
of water and position my boat 45-degrees to the wind. Fish
patterning.
I prefer to pattern fish than to catch them. It’s hunting
and its magical. Sometimes I spend the entire day trying to
figure out their movement and never make a cast. Just when
I think I know what the fish are doing they change the rules.
It’s a game of sorts, and it’s the only way to get to know their
behavior cold. On the best of days I come out of the harbor,
go right to the school, and stay with them throughout the
entire flood tide and then throughout the entire ebb tide. Spot
fishing works, but more often than not it relies on luck.
A writer friend from Norway came out to fish last summer. I call him the Viking. The Viking loves Norwegian Sea
trout to death, but he wanted to catch a bass. We went out
on my boat, patterned the fish, and dropped the hook to wet
wade. I tied on a pale chartreuse and yellow point fly and a
bucktail as a dropper. He looked out in the distance to try
and see the fish coming.
“Can you see any? I think they will come up from the
deeper water around that point and follow the line,” he said.
“But I don’t see any.”
“Why don’t you get ready,” I said. “Get some line on
the water so you can water haul when you seen ‘em.”

T.K. multi-tasking…
The Viking laid about thirty feet of line on the water and
resumed his vigil of about 75 yards.
WHAM. First one fish hit, then a second.
“I’m on!” he said. “A double. I didn’t even see them.”
“Some Leif Erickson you are,” I said, “they’re right at
your feet.”
The beaches in the summer are better at night, but
sometimes they’re lit up during the day. I drive to them in
my unreliable Jeep. I have a 1978 CJ5 with a frame so rotted
from sand and salt that it’s barely ok to drive on the road. I
keep threatening to bring it up to speed, but I never do. A
case of beer goes a long way towards getting an inspection
sticker slapped on the windshield. So long as it gets me to
a beach I’m happy. My fear is that some day I’ll be seven
or eight miles out on the sand and the frame decides to give
way. I’m not so worried about the rig. Eventually I’d like to
sink it and make an artificial reef. But walking a mile on the
sand is like two on Terra Firma, and eight times two equals a
jam.
I start fishing at twilight. I like easing into the darkness, and I’m happiest when the Western beaches hold bass.
Watching the Golden Ball drop, and get replaced by a lavender and green sky is the best. I like Full Moons certainly
because of the tides.

I use my senses. I feel my line drift with the current, I
follow up all hunches, and I move with the wind. Sometimes
I leave my waders in the Jeep just to walk bearfoot on the
beach. When I catch a striper, I rub my hand all over the fish,
and hold my hand to my nose. After that, I smell for fish. I
look for current points in the sand and I look for sand fleas
dancing on the beach. When I find a bunch, I stop and work
the water. That’s where the fish are.
Sometimes the day beaches are worth fishing. I pick my
spots carefully because lots of summer folks are around. One
time I got lucky. I went to have lunch at a restaurant on the
beach. It was a hot day and I wanted a bucket of steamers
and a beer. I had fished all night and wrote all morning, so I
was tired and lonely. It was a place where there were lots of
people and a ton of girls in bikinis.
Before I ordered my food I walked up to the beach.
There were blitzing fish right at the water’s edge! A big
school of ‘em, chasing sandeels. I ran to my Jeep, and tore
ass back to my house. A 1978, inline four with a rotted-frame
going around a corner at 65 isn’t pretty, but I grabbed a rod
off the porch and bee-lined it back. I pulled up alongside a
sanddune, and sprinted down to the water.
“Current’s moving right to left,” a gray-haired surfer
with a longboard said.
“Thanks.”
There was another fella in a Hawaiian shirt sitting in a
chair drinking a Bud. He had a 30-35-pounder next to him.

Mung. Ugh. Red ragweed all along the beach. Big
schools of sandeels swimming, some silversides spraying out,
and big bass all in between. I saw one pocket of open water
and fired out a cast. Two strips, fish on!
He ran up current, and my leader filled immediately with
weed. Weed on a leader means lots of breakoffs. I waded up
to my chest to get onto the offshore bar and fight the beast
Ocean water temperatures are about ten degrees colder than
on the bay side, and after the initial plunge I thought I had
three Adam’s Apples. It didn’t matter, I wanted this fish. I’d
been eating pasta with butter every night for about a week,
and I drooled at the thought of a grilled filet. Ten minutes
later I beached the fish in hand, about 20-21 pounds worth. I
waded back to shore.
Water poured off of me as I passed the Hawaiian-shirted
angler drinking a beer.
“Not bad,” he said, “but it’s not over 25.”
“True, that, but it’s gonna taste every bit as good.”
“Got that right,” he said. “It’s a good fish.”
Walk up a beach with a fish and you’ll get comments
from the peanut gallery galore. The loudest chatter comes
from people who buy bass filets from Hatches Market and
then tell me how wrong it is to kill a fish. I never respond to
the “how could you” or the “who do you think you are” comments. I’m just a fisherman and I don’t see anything wrong
with taking a few fish each season. Besides, I was too busy
staring at the pretty redhead in the sundress standing next to
my Jeep.

The Fall
Fall is like a Pu Pu Platter. If you can figure out how to
get through it, let me know. There are lots of fish to catch, early
season goose hunting, puddle duck hunting, grouse and woodcock
hunting, turkey, deer good grief. Opportunity knocks, blessed are
those who wait.
There are three parts to every Fall run: early, middle and late.
They are dramatically different from each other. In a way, I view
them as a gradual decline that culminates with an abrupt end. I like
it fine.
Early fall means Indian Summer. It’s hot as August during the
day, but drier and cool at night. Additional species show up, like
Atlantic bonito, False albacore, and tuna. They fit right in with the
striped bass and the bluefish that are starting to school up. They
come to chase Peanut Bunker, herring, silversides, bay anchovies,
butterfish, and sandeels.

Obeying channel markers as you come out of a harbor is
a near impossibility. All you want to do is to slam down your
throttle, kick up a wake and get on the fish. Nothing beats
a big school of bones and albies ripping across the surface,
shredding bait balls, and disappearing. On some days you
can see the fish coming at you from a long ways away. Buck
fever for deer hunters, hardtail fever for fishermen, it’s all
the same. Your knees knock, your throat goes dry, and you
persuade yourself that you’re different, that you won’t make
a rookie mistake. You have one shot before the school is
gone. What are you going to do? Stand on your line? Flub
the cast? Find a windknot after you break off a fish? You
have the entire winter to relive your mistakes. And during
that long winter you’ll convince yourself that you somehow
will do it differently next year. Maybe you will, but maybe
you won’t.
Run and gun. If it were so wrong, why does everyone
do it? Do you wanna sit in a spot and wait for the school to
come to you or do you wanna get in the pit? Sometimes you
have to make long runs and in doing so you’ll find crashing gulls and diving terns. The saltspray feels good on your
burned face. Guides as saltwater cowboys? Riddle me this:
is it more fun to mend fences or to get into a gunfight? Praise
the Lord and pass the ammunition. Just make sure that you
have the fastest boat.
I think bones and albies get more praise than they
deserve. Fact is, for decades the first ones are caught off of
Hedgefence and they’re caught on Umbrella Rigs trolled
deep on wire. Any fish that hits a colored surgical tube ain’t
smart. Conventional fishermen catch ‘em up six at a time.
Use the right fly, get a proper drift, they eat, just like every
other fish. Just because some of them are tough to catch
doesn’t mean they should be canonized. They are fish and
you can catch ‘em all day long and twice on Sunday. Not
every one, but enough. Keep that in mind the next time you
make a cast. Chances are you won’t be a victim of hardtail
fever.
Waiting for the blitz.
At the same time is the Striper Moon, the first full moon
in September. It is the time of year when the biggest bass
of the season are caught at night on eels. They’re caught
on the beaches and they’re caught at the same spots every
year. While the southern winds mung up the beaches, the
northern winds clean them up. Last year there were 14 over
sixty-pound bass caught on the beaches. I find out about
them by going to the tackle shops. Fishermen bring them in
to be weighed at their favorite shop, so if you want to find
out how many were caught you have to visit all the shops. I
find out about the quiet fish from friends. They are the ones
that never see a scale, but that my friends show me in my
backyard. Some of these fish are the size of an eight-year
old child.

I had a longstanding tradition during early September.
Some pals and I were on a quest for the ultimate day, a castand-blast so to speak, and we found it. It started with setting
goose blocks near our blind around 10 PM. We strung them
on long lines so the high tide wouldn’t wash them away, and
then went to work the beaches for stripers. Around False
Dawn we’d stop fishing and go to our blind. Early season
goose hunting. The limit was five each, but we’d only kill
a couple. In September they haven’t been pestered so they
decoy easily. The shooting is fast and furious. We’d pick
and breast the birds, gather up our spread, and get the boat.
Onwards to the South Cape where there are lots of breakwalls and depth changes, and the Gulf Stream pushes closer
to shore. Bonito, albies, Spanish macks, and bluefish. We
had the bass and birds under our belt, time for hardtails and
bluedogs. Needless to say we were worthless by 8 PM. And
I’d be lying if I didn’t say I slept through the next day.
Fall bluefish. They’re bigger and meaner. Sure I catch some
snappers and cocktails, but I love hooking the slammers that
a few months ago were racers. Big bluefish in shallow water
are like a tarpon. They run, they jump, they tailwalk. A 12pound bluedog is a treat, a 15-pounder is a luxury. Catch one
like that on a fly and you’ll remember him for life. If you get
him in….
They don’t call ‘em Appleknockers for nothing. When
the apples fall from the trees in October’s middle fall, False
Albacore split. They don’t like the cold water and after a
Summer of wet wading I can’t blame them, it’s culture shock
for me, too. The bonito and the bluefish and the tuna bale
as well. They all leave ‘cause there’s not enough bait for a
party.
Anything done in moderation shows a lack of interest.
Staying with a quarter mile long school of blitzing bass and
catching one after the other until your arms hurt, your fingers
are bleeding, and your legs don’t work is what you get. The
Fall run is an immoderate time, and if done right you’ll catch
enough fish in a week to get you through a few months of
rest. I go out early, I stay out late, I blow off work, I do
whatever it takes. I catch small fish and big ones and all sizes
in between. I catch a fish on poppers, flatwings, needlefish
and tin. Throw a Goo-goo Eyes Big Daddy on a 13-foot surf
stick, toss a slider on a ten-weight, but do it before it ends. It
won’t be long before the Fat Lady sings, so I make sure I get
a dance.
Cold gray days and cold, black nights bring on the
late fall. All that is left are stripers and birds. Most of the
terns have left because the small bait has split, but the long,
winged gannets are here.
Gannets are some of my favorite birds and I can sit on
the bow of my boat and watch them until I am frozen. I like
how they move. They fly at a moderate range, they lift up
in the sky, and then plummet, like Icarus down to the water.
Then they swim. If you ever watched a gannet, they are as
graceful swimmers as they are fliers. They spread their wings
wide, cup them, and stroke with the grace of an Olympic
breaststroker. When they have a herring in their pointy bills,
they ascend and swallow their prize. If he were alive, Peter
Bruegal would paint gannets. He’d be several hundred years
old, but what the heck.
The end approaches, the schools spread out. Instead of
back-to-back schools of fish, there is more time and more
space in between them. I cover more ground to find them,
and when I’m on ‘em they’re small. Sometimes the schoolies
hold just beyond my best cast, othertimes they’re at my feet. The
mornings are darker, the afternoons end earlier, and the ocean is clear
and gray. Dropping tides on a North wind means jacked up seas.
You can see bass scattered throughout the waves and if you lead a
fish you’ll catch him.
In between the schools I scavenge the beach. Instead of floating
seaweed there are big hunks of broken saltcord grass, and lobster
buoys. The strong seas bring in flotsom and in it are treasures in the
form of striper plugs. When bales spring shut, plugs break. They
tangle with kelp and grass, and the currents wash the grass and plugs
on shore. When my eyes are sharp I can pick them out quickly and
easily. One fall I found 38. A good percent of them were in excellent condition, nothing that new split rings and trebles wouldn’t cure.
Others were junk, with lips missing from swimmers, balsa chewed
by bluefish, or tail sections from broken backs gone. To my mind,
those are the special plugs, and I hold them in my hand, lay back on
the beach and think of a fish story worthy of the broken plug. A third
group consists of plugs to catch fishermen. They don’t look right,
they don’t swim right, and I wonder why anyone would bother to
fish them? The popular Mambo Minnow comes to mind as one such
plug. Looking for plugs is fun, and I’ve sure found some keepers.
Some day soon I will go fishing and I will find nothing. The
bass will be gone. The signs are everywhere around me and I know
I’m close. Mercury is not as aggressive as he was in the early fall, he
is sluggish. Lobster pots and buoys are neatly stacked like cordwood
in the yards near my home. Boats are on blocks, all neatly shrinkwrapped like a big Christmas present.
One of these days I’m going to have to put the deck furniture in
the basement, and rake some pine needles and leaves, but not today.
Today, I’m going fishin’.
