membership
Our goal at PBA is to support our members and the growth of the industry. We aim to make membership attainable for every
professional and have seen significant growth across several membership sections.
“BE THE LEADER
OF YOUR FUTURE.”

Recruitment Campaign
CREATING MEMBER VALUE
Adding value to membership is PBA’s first
priority. As part of our continuing efforts to
enhance member benefits, we have improved
or added several new programs to help create
an experience suited to each member’s needs.
Our Member-to-Member Program, in its
third year for the 2014 event cycle, benefits
both member exhibitors and attendees at our
Signature Events through discounts and special
promotions for attendees and increased
opportunities to build brand awareness for
exhibitors.
Compared to the
same period in 2011
Most significant
growth in 2013
Passion and dedication are just a couple
words that describe our Beauty Professional/
NCA members. To recognize the dedication
of our longtime members to the association,
PBA has bestowed a Lifetime Membership
on those members who have been with us for
50+ consecutive years, and has implemented
the annual Lifetime Member Scholarship
in their honor. The scholarship is graciously
sponsored by Goldwell New York and KAO
USA and celebrates the spirit of commitment of
our Lifetime Members to the continued pursuit
of professional education.
RECRUITMENT & RETENTION
Staying active and present in the industry
has been instrumental to the growth and
success of PBA. Along with a presence at our
own Signature Events, where we unveiled
a newly designed and enhanced
membership booth and member
lounge, PBA exhibits at major industry events
throughout the year. Participation at these
events helps raise awareness of how PBA can
help professionals from all sectors advance in
today’s industry.
To increase our student membership, we
have partnered with Marianna Industries
to build awareness of our association by
providing incoming students across the
U.S. with information on PBA membership,
engaging them in the industry early on to help
them start off on a successful and fulfilling
career.
Already a popular member benefit, the new
Corporate Perks Program launched in
August 2013 gives members exclusive pricing
to more than 30,000 merchants, making the
day-to-day lives of members easier and the
services they use more affordable.
In partnership with MultiView, a major
content manager and provider of businessto-business publications, our PBA Beauty
Industry Guide is a valuable industry
directory providing members with one of
the most comprehensive online directories
of professional services and products. PBA
member companies receive discounted
advertising rates in the Guide, as well as a
unique indicia identifying them as a
proud PBA member.

RESEARCH AND RESOURCES
Our research efforts continue to grow and
provide member companies industry data
key to professional advancement. Among our
many efforts, we were pleased to find positive
results coming from our 2012 Biennial
Distributor Benchmarking Survey,
which experienced a 29% increase in
participation from the last study in 2010.
Among our most exciting new research efforts,
PBA has partnered with renowned research
firm Kline and Company for a revolutionary
research effort to provide members with
detailed, highly accurate, and actionable
market intelligence on the professional beauty
industry. Named Kline Pro, this effort will
help members identify trends, benchmark
performance, evaluate competitive sectors,
and help in the decision-making process.
Although the data collected by Kline and
Company is kept completely confidential, PBA
is helping to ensure data collection procedures
and safeguards are implemented and closely
followed. PBA will use the data to design
educational content for events and online
and members will receive special pricing and
access to data.

LOOKING AHEAD AT PBA MEMBERSHIP
In an effort to accommodate our growing membership and craft a unique, value based experience, a modification to our membership structure will
officially launch in the fourth quarter of 2014. The modification will result in two membership types (Business and Individual) and a structure that is easier to
understand and unifies members’ interests within the industry. Both membership types will be twelve month terms and billed on an anniversary year cycle.
To further enhance our member’s experience and make resources and programs more accessible for busy professionals, PBA is rolling out an enhanced
website that will allow our members to create a personalized experience based on their individual needs and activity. Look for these enhancements in the
fourth quarter of 2014.

- PBA Regional Forums (Previously Salon Summits) Campaign
LIVE EDUCATION
Our Distributor Executive Conference,
gearing up for its third year in 2014, is
quickly becoming an industry favorite,
increasing attendance year over year. The
2013 event, held in April in Joliet, IL and
graciously hosted by PBA Distributor Member
Professional Salon Concepts, experienced
a 59% increase in attendance and
welcomed a professional panel of small to
large distributors over an expanded one
and a half day event. Taking feedback
from the debut event into consideration, topics
in 2013 were reduced to allow for more
in-depth discussion and attendees enjoyed
a Sales Manager Round Table.
With a new name and more focused
direction, PBA’s Regional Forums for the
Professional (known in 2012 and 2013
as Regional Salon Summits) are making
professional education for salon/spa owners,
managers, and professionals accessible and
affordable. This regional event offers highlevel consistent education available from
coast to coast and features sessions led by
respected industry professionals and business
consultants. The Forums made three stops in
2013: Minneapolis, MN; Las Vegas, NV (as
part of PBA Beauty Week); and Boston, MA.
SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
PBA strongly believes that education is key
to a successful career. To foster professional
growth, PBA and industry partners are
supporting current and aspiring professionals
through our scholarship program. In
addition to our long-standing partnerships
with Sally Beauty, Minerva and
Smooth ‘N Shine, PBA introduced its
Lifetime Member and Hans Neumaier
scholarship opportunities in 2013. All PBA
scholarships seek to support aspiring and/
or current cosmetology students and working
professionals.
LOOKING AHEAD AT PBA LIVE EDUCATION
PBA and a taskforce of leading manufacturers are currently in the final planning stages for our
new PBA Executive Summit. This two-day event is scheduled to debut in December 2014 in
Scottsdale, AZ. The new Summit will primarily welcome high-level manufacturer and distributor
executives but will be open to all beauty industry business owners. The theme will be centered on
Leadership and Consumer IQ. Look for details in early 2014.
PBA Beauty Professional/NCA Chair Graciela Santiler-Nowik
and recently retired Sally Beauty President Mike Spinozzi present
the Sally Scholarship to 2012 winner Chelsie Jones.
Attendees at the 2012 PBA Distributor Executive Conference enjoy networking over lunch.

advocacy
PBA’s Government Advocacy program has significantly grown over the past three years and has been instrumental in raising awareness of
legislative and regulatory issues among industry professionals. Advocating for the rights of every PBA member, the PBA Government Affairs Team
tracks, proposes, and responds to state and federal legislation with potential to affect the industry and works to keep professionals informed and
engaged in the laws and regulations governing our industry.
“BECOME AN
ADVOCATE FOR THE
INDUSTRY! JOIN THE
FIGHT TO KEEP YOUR
LICENSE AND DEFEND
YOUR PROFESSION!”
LEGISLATIVE TRACKING
& ACTION
Tracking legislation at both the state and
federal levels is a priority for PBA. State
legislatures continue to look for ways to
eliminate cosmetology licensing and federal
lawmakers continue to discuss the importance
of the beauty industry to the U.S. economy
and consumers.
- PBA State Captain Program Campaign
Significant progress has been made on the
Small Business Tax Equalization and
Compliance Act, commonly known as the
FICA Tip Tax Fairness legislation. This
important legislation if passed would extend
a dollar-for-dollar FICA tax credit salon/spa
owners pay on employee tip income, a tax
credit restaurant owners have enjoyed since
the 1980s. PBA is the industry champion
for this legislation and has made significant
progress in raising awareness for tax reform.
We continue to earn bi-partisan support
on the FICA Tip Tax Fairness legislation
and have received positive feedback at our
2012/2013 lobby days.
Industry volunteers gather on Capitol Hill to educate lawmakers
on our industry during the 2013 Welcome to Our World event.
The passage of the FICA legislation is highly
dependent on Congress passing a tax reform
package, which hasn’t happened in nearly
twenty years. A renewed push for finality on
the law continues as we progress in the new
113th Congress.
2013 FICA TIP TAX FAIRNESS LEGISLATION TIMELINE
7
advancing our industry
Industry collaboration is essential to
progressing the laws and regulations that will
serve the industry now and into the future. In
late 2012, PBA joined forces with industry
partners, including the American Association
of Cosmetology Schools (AACS), International
Salon Business Network (ISBN), King Research
| Barbicide | Lucky Tiger, and the National
Interstate Council of State Boards (NICS),
to create the Beauty Industry Coalition
for Legislative Reform. The goal of the
Coalition is to support change to improve the
beauty industry at the state level by providing
suggestions in support of consistent standards
relating to licensing, education, health and
public safety.
This effort is a direct response to the persistent
threats of deregulation in states across
the U.S. PBA and Coalition partners are
working to encourage consistency from
state to state. There are state legislators in
several states that view the beauty industry as
fragmented and are looking at ways to cut
down on government regulations they deem
unnecessary. Members of the Coalition are
currently discussing suggestions with the goal
of providing consistency and legitimacy to the
industry.
“YOU WORKED FOR IT, YOU EARNED IT. BE PROUD OF YOUR PROFESSION.”
- PBA “I Am A Professional. I Am Licensed.” Campaign
RESEARCH & RESOURCES
An important function of our Government
Advocacy program is gathering data to help
us in our mission to protect the industry and
help professionals make informed decisions.
In December 2012, PBA conducted a
first-of-its-kind national poll to assess
consumer perceptions on cosmetology
licensing and regulation. A catalyst for the
launch of PBA’s popular I Am Grassroots
Movement, the study polled general
election voters from across the U.S. and
found overwhelming public support
for the requirement of licensing for
cosmetologists and barbers.
Key Findings Include:
•
Consumers overwhelmingly believe
licensing protects the public and improves
quality and safety in the beauty industry.
•
More than nine in ten (94%) 2012 general
election voters polled say they support
requiring licenses, including 97% of
Democrats, 92% of Republicans, and 92%
of independent voters.
•
•
Findings suggest the most compelling
message focuses on how licensing ensures
proper sanitation and cleanliness. More
than two in three (67%) voters said the
message was very compelling, including
voters of all political affiliations and ages.
The vast majority of voters say quality
and safety would decline if states ended
cosmetology licensing and regulation.
More than four in five (82%) say safety
would decline and more than three in four
(76%) say quality would decline without
licensing.
PBA Government Affairs advocates meet with members of Congress during a 2013 PBA Lobby Day.
GRASSROOTS
To address pressure by state lawmakers from across the U.S. to deregulate our industry and
armed with the findings of PBA’s eye-opening consumer poll, PBA’s I Am A Professional.
I Am Licensed. Movement took shape in April 2013, experiencing an immediate and
overwhelming response by industry professionals and trade media. The I Am Movement serves
as a direct channel to bring licensed professionals into efforts to educate consumers on the
health and safety standards inherent with the licensing and regulation of the beauty industry.
There are currently more than 800 and counting licensed professionals taking part
in this effort. Upon joining the movement, licensed professionals receive a free window cling to
place at their work station and helpful talking points to start the conversation with their clients.
The I Am Movement also aims to empower licensed professionals to approach state lawmakers
with confidence when legislation is introduced that would negatively affect our industry.
To strengthen our network of industry advocates, the PBA State Captain Program continues
to gain members across the U.S. to help us rally professionals in their home states when an
alert has been issued. PBA State Captains help spread information to their industry contacts
regarding legislation in their own state. The PBA State Captain Program’s participation
has increased by 48% since it began in 2012, currently totaling 117 advocates in 41
states.
LOOKING AHEAD AT PBA GRASSROOTS EFFORTS
As part of the legislative process, we will continue to encourage participation in our grassroots
efforts throughout 2014, including hosting federal lobby days and participating in the annual
Welcome to Our World reception in Washington D.C. in May.
Also look for an expansion of the State Captain Program, including personal updates, webinar
training, and a networking event for our State Captain advocates.

PBA is known industry wide as a leading producer of high-quality industry events. From tradeshows to competitions and special programs for students,
our Signature Events are a catalyst for driving business success, recognizing artistic and business excellence and advancing beauty careers.
BUSINESS TO BUSINESS
In conjunction with our Italian partner BolognaFiere S.P.A., PBA produces the largest
international business-to-business beauty trade show in North America. Cosmoprof North
America (CPNA) continues to grow in both attendees and exhibitors year over year and offers
professionals an experience unmatched in the industry.
CPNA 2013 gained notoriety in several trade publications for the collaborative efforts of the
GES design team and PBA to create a new contemporary look for the 2013 event. All
marketing and trade show furnishings were completely new, and thanks to a generous donation
from GES, PBA unveiled a newly enhanced membership booth and lounge. Look
for more changes in 2014 and 2015.
Along with its many popular programs, such as Discover Beauty Matchmaking, the
International Buyer Program and U.S. Commercial Service Buyer Program, CPNA
2013 unveiled many new programs to once again exceed industry expectations:
•
•
The new Beautique Beauty Sample Bar, benefitting City of Hope, was a hit with
attendees and exhibitors alike, offering participating companies further opportunities to
showcase their brands and attendees a chance to test premier products hitting the market.
Beautique 2013 raised $11,000 for City of Hope.
A first at any industry tradeshow, TV shopping giants QVC, HSN, and The
Shopping Channel (Canada) hosted open casting calls in 2013 for the next on-air
beauty talent. At the time this report was written, four CPNA exhibiting companies
have been chosen to appear on one or all of these media outlets.

All PBA Charities are managed and funded through the PBA Foundation, a tax exempt 501 (c)(3) organization that supports charitable initiatives
and the historical preservation of the beauty industry. Along with domestic abuse awareness and education and disaster relief, the Foundation funds
educational scholarships, and heritage initiatives, which preserve the industry’s history, archives and artifacts. The PBA Foundation is controlled and
operated by the Professional Beauty Association (PBA).

CUT IT OUT: SALONS AGAINST DOMESTIC ABUSE
Premier Sponsor:
- PBA CUT IT OUT Campaign
PBA’s CUT IT OUT/Salons Against Domestic Abuse program is dedicated to ending
domestic violence against women and men. The program seeks to raise awareness and train
salon and spa professionals to recognize signs of violence and safely refer clients, co-workers,
friends and family to local resources for help.
2013 saw a renewed push to heighten awareness of domestic abuse and increase participation
in the CUT IT OUT programs. A newly designed and organized website was launched
in the fall to give volunteers and trainers access to more information and resources. To help
fundraising efforts, the CUT IT OUT Give the Power back Drive program was launched
in October in commemoration of National Domestic Abuse Awareness Month. The program
encourages salons and professionals to participate in a CUT IT OUT Drive to engage
colleagues, clients and communities in the issue. Participants can easily access ideas and
resources to market their events on the new website, and have the option to donate proceeds
from their drive solely to CUT IT OUT, a local shelter or program, or both.

Working with our industry partner, Great Clips, PBA has also developed a customized
domestic abuse training program for Great Clips franchise owners and salon employees.
The training is a direct response to domestic abuse incidents at salons across the U.S. and
focuses on recognizing the symptoms of abuse in colleagues and how to get them the help they
need.
LOOKING AHEAD AT CUT IT OUT
PBA will continue refining this important program. A new training kit is currently in design to help our
domestic violence professionals train salon professionals and students on the signs of abuse and how
they can make a difference for victims and their families. Learn more at probeauty.org/cutitout.
