Often we don’t realise what we need
till it’s right in front of us. For example:
I didn’t realise I needed another
SpongeBob movie in my life, but after
catching up with the nasal sea-based
creation I couldn’t fathom how I had
been getting by without him.
Detailing the initial setup of the film’s
plot and describing SpongeBob’s
undersea world is probably a fool’s
errand, but the story is such a
satisfyingly silly concoction that it’s
hard to keep from trying. The film
follows the continuing adventures of
SpongeBob, a sea sponge who looks
suspiciously like a kitchen sponge,
and his best friend Patrick, a rather
dim-witted, but well-meaning, starfish.
All good, respectable sponges need
a job, so SpongeBob spends his
working hours at the Krusty Krab fastfood restaurant, which is run by Mr.
Krabs (obviously). The chief rival of
the restaurant is the Chum Bucket,
which is run by Plankton, a small,
nefarious schemer who will stop at
nothing to get the secret to Mr. Krabs’
tasty burgers. Whilst life is carrying
on as peculiarly – but ultimately as
normally – as always on the bottom
of the ocean, up above there are
questionable goings-on. A pirate by
the name of Burger Beard (played
by a very game Antonio Banderas)
gets hold of a magical book that tells
the story of our hero, SpongeBob
SquarePants. Whatever is written in

SpongeBob, a sea
sponge who looks
suspiciously like a
kitchen sponge ...”
this book comes true, which makes it
a rather powerful weapon. After some
wayward adventuring, SpongeBob and
his friends (and even Plankton) set
out to stop Burger Beard’s plan. Along
the way the team will see their home
become a post-apocalyptic landscape,
one of SpongeBob’s crew will briefly go
insane, and an intergalactic Watcher,
whose task it is to keep the galaxy in
a stable state, will require a loo break.
There will also be a rap battle. It is an
odd film, to say the least.
The film brings back the original voice
talent behind the show and the first
film: Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill
Fagerbakke (Patrick), Mr. Lawrence
(Plankton), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs)
and Rodger Bumpass (Squidward) –
and they’re all on fine form, although
Mr. Lawrence’s ever put-upon Plankton
continues to be the highlight of the
series.
Making a SpongeBob film isn’t a simple
task as the characters of the show, and
the world they inhabit, are so very, very
barmy. But the problem is compounded
by the fact that the TV episodes
play out over 11 minutes (22 if you
count the fact that they usually air as
double episodes). The director, Paul
Tibbitt, gets around this by throwing
SpongeBob and co. from one Dadaist
adventure to another, which works
far better than it has any right to. The
many mini subplots and adventures
ultimately cohere, suggesting that
Tibbitt understands that SpongeBob’s
world has more than a little chaos to it,
but in his hands it’s a kind of controlled
chaos.
It’s been just over a decade since
SpongeBob’s first cinematic venture,
and all being well it will take him a little
less time to find his way back onto the
big screen.

Back in 2012 cinema-goers were
seduced in their millions by the
charms of The Best Exotic Marigold
Hotel, which was based on Deborah
Moggach’s novel. The movie told the
tale of a group of pensioners who
trade up their humdrum retirement in
Britain for the promise of an exotic
and relaxing turn at a sanctuary for
the elderly in Jaipur, India. (Quick
side note: if you haven’t seen this yet,
then be sure to check it out in the
Favourites line-up on board today!)
This year, director John Madden and
writer Ol Parker have created a rather
fabulous – and rather teasingly titled
– sequel: The Second Best Exotic
Marigold Hotel. This time round, the
troupe of “elderly and beautiful”
geriatrics have fully embraced
their new lives in Jaipur and are all,
somewhat surprisingly, opting to forgo
their relaxing retirement in favour of
earning a living – be it heading up the
local exclusive ex-pat’s club, giving
guided tours of areas they know
nothing about, or hunting down the
finest silks and fabrics in the expansive
markets of India. There is love and
longing aplenty and a myriad of colourful
subplots that are as busy as the streets
of Jaipur itself.
The ever-entrepreneurial Sonny (the
hilarious Dev Patel) is hoping to expand
his enterprise and is looking for funding
from American retirement corporation
Evergreen. Awaiting an imminent hotel
inspection, Sonny is left in a panic when
a new American visitor (Richard Gere)
arrives at hotel, as he juggles trying
to impress the “inspector” while also
sorting out his upcoming nuptials to the
beautiful Sunaina.
Now, some movies can be considered
to have a good cast, maybe even a great
cast, but I defy anyone that sits down
to watch either the first instalment or
this month’s must-watch blockbuster
to disagree with me when I say that
both Best Exotic Hotel movies have an
incredible cast! They feature the likes
of Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy,
Tom Wilkinson, Ronald Pickup, Penelope
Wilton, Celia Imrie, and Richard Gere.
It’s evident that whoever put together
this venerable collection of silver-haired
veterans was onto a winning formula, and
it’s no wonder that the films have been
such hits!
The stellar and infinitely lovable cast
have all returned for this reprise, and
it’s clear just how much they enjoy
working together. It’s immediately
apparent that this is a group of old
friends, and the chemistry on-screen
is tangible. Throw in the addition of the
silver fox himself, Richard Gere, and
it seems like a match made in, well…
India!
While a sequel was never intended
when the first movie was released, do
not be put off by the “Second Best”
aspect of the title. This definitely
doesn’t fall into the category of wishywashy sequels, and the characters are
so likeable and charming that you’ll
relish the opportunity to spend some
more time in their company. With a
great soundtrack that sweeps you
along, including a couple of full-blown
Bollywood dance numbers that are
guaranteed to get your toes tapping,
it’s impossible not to get caught up
in the colour, energy and feel-good
nature of this film!

Everyone wants to believe in the
impossible, to suspend their disbelief
and imagine they can be more than
just ordinary. With the huge influx
of superhero adaptations proving
extremely popular on both TV and
movie screens, the expectations seem
to be growing rather than diminishing,
so each new show and film has a high
hurdle to clear – particularly when it
comes to appeasing the fans of the
hero (or heroes) in question.
The Flash is the new kid on the
block. Developed by the writers and
producers of Arrow, this new show
leads us on a thrilling journey into
the life of a unique and surprisingly
relatable superhero. Based on the
DC comic book character, the series
follows Barry Allen (played by Grant
Gustin), a crime scene investigator
who gains superhuman speed, and
uses that ability to fight criminals, as
well as to fight others who have gained
superhuman abilities.
From the start the story hurtles along,
showing how Barry’s life was changed
forever after his mother’s mysterious
murder, which his father was falsely
charged with. Many years later Barry
becomes The Flash after radiation from
a malfunctioning particle accelerator
covers the entire city and causes a
severe storm, which leads to Barry
being struck by lightning. As always in
this genre, this kind of event leads to
superpowers; it’s heartbreaking that
this doesn’t happen in real life. With
the aid of brilliant special effects the
freak accident is made into incredibly
nail-biting viewing.
With his boyish charms and his neverfailing belief that he can be anything
but ordinary, there is something
incredibly infectious about Barry’s
enthusiasm and exuberance for life.
Gustin seems an unassuming leading
man for a show of this type, but as the
show goes on it’s clear that he grasps
the importance of depicting Barry with
great vulnerability and awkwardness,
and he slowly shows the character’s
growing confidence. Gustin is quickly
coming into his own, and with a solid
support cast behind him it makes
excellent viewing.
The show has the perfect balance of
being enjoyable for both the diehard
comic/superhero genre fans and
for relative newcomers to the genre.
What is brilliant is that they are able
to construct this bombastic drama
without compromising the heart of
the story, and what has captured the
hearts and the imaginations of fans,
young and old.
An important aspect of what makes
The Flash so watchable is that he is
able to defeat the bad guys, not with
brawn or gadgets, like other heroes,
but by outwitting them – a tool that
most viewers ought to be able to
appreciate – but it’s also possible that
being The Fastest Man Alive helps...
The Flash has the typical ingredients
of a superhero show: a dark motivating
event which changes the direction
of the hero’s life, a light sprinkling
of a “complicated” love life in the
background, and a decent amount of
teamwork. It makes for a satisfying mix
in this new superhero drama.

debate, I was firmly in the Oasis camp.
Throughout the ‘90s the debate
between the Manchester Britpoppers
and London’s answer to the Stone
Roses provided a terrific platform
for both bands, practically forcing
everyone who was into music to pick a
favourite and pledge allegiance.
The battle for the Best Band in Britain
title, at least during the ‘90s, could
arguably be awarded to either side, but
it was usually given to Oasis, mainly
because of their achievements over
the following decade. On the face of
things they certainly look like the more
productive of the two bands, releasing
four studio albums between 2000 and
2009, to Blur’s one; but this belies the
truth.

Blur’s guitarist Graham Coxon has been
consistently releasing solo records,
and several different musical ventures
have taken up Damon Albarn’s time
(such as the bands Gorillaz and The
Good, The Bad & The Queen). Even
with the long breaks that they’ve taken,
the band have never truly lost the
strong fan base that they built up in
the ‘90s. In 2009 Blur took to the stage
in Hyde Park, reuniting for the first time
in a long time, and were given a rousing
welcome. They released new tracks
over the years that followed, but we
have had to wait till 2015 to hear a full
album. Tracks from their latest album
show their ability to adapt and create
new modern music whilst keeping the
unique style that made them such an
important touchstone for so many
growing up in the ‘90s.
There’s no longer any animosity
between Oasis and Blur, and it is now
much more acceptable to be a fan of
both. But with Oasis long since split
and on separate paths, it looks like it
might be Blur who stand the test of
time better. If they keep producing
music like that found on their greatest
hits compilation, then long may that
continue.

• Located on the inside of the seat you will find the audio
jack and entertainment system control unit.
• Insert the plug end of twin male connectors into the
audio jack A . The male plug connector pins are sized to
fit into the audio jack in one way.
• For AUDIO-ONLY entertainment, push the mode button
B that displays a
symbol.
• For MOVIE VIDEO entertainment, push the mode button
D that displays a
symbol.
• To change CHANNELS E or headset VOLUME C level,
press either the up or down arrow buttons next to the
choices.
• A channel number will be displayed in the small window
of the control unit, showing your selection in either audio
or movie video modes.
• Lift the centre arm rest cover F to expose the 8.4”
personal monitor.
