f r o m t h e books, t h e census i n d e x e s a r e found f i r s t ( c o n v e n i e n t f o r
t h o s e who a r e u s i n g t h e r e a d e r s ) . Then t h e D . A . R . l i n e a g e books,
which a r e numbered i n t h e 3 0 0 s . Next come American G e n e a l o g i c a l B i o g r a p h i c a l I n d e x , e t c . , t h e "How To" books, and Family H i s t o r i e s i n
alphabetical order.
Dewey a s s i g n e d numbers t o s t a t e s grouped by g e o g r a p h i c a l l o c a t i o n ; such books a r e now s h e l v e d n e a r l y as t h e y were, e x c e p t t h a t
New England books immediately p r e c e d e o t h e r g e o g r a p h i c a l s e c t i o n s i n s t e a d of b e i n g o f f t o themselves. Mrs. Rader has w i s e l y allowed as
much s p a c e as p o s s i b l e f o r a d d i t i o n s t o t h e Texas and S o u t h e r n S t a t e s
books, which a r e of paramount i n t e r e s t t o m o s t l o c a l p a t r o n s .
The l i b r a r y s t a f f r e a l i z e t h a t i t i s u n s e t t l i n g f o r long-time
r e s e a r c h e r s t o f i n d t h e i r f a v o r i t e books moved, b u t t h i s change i s
t h o u g h t t o be i n t h e i n t e r e s t of t h e g r e a t e s t number o f t h o s e who
p a t r o n i z e t h e l i b r a r y . They w i l l g l a d l y g i v e o r i e n t a t i o n t o u r s t o
any who would l i k e t o become familiar w i t h t h e more p r o f e s s i o n a l
arrangement.

The p h r a s e "mother tongue" evokes a w a r m f e e l i n g of p a t r i o t i s m
and familial p r i d e i n m o s t of u s . Perhaps we g e t a l i t t l e exaspera t e d when a s p e l l i n g o r usage t r i p s us up--breaks t h e normal p a t t e r n
(if t h e r e i s a norm i n o u r p o l y g l o t h e r i t a g e ! ) , b u t we excuse i t as
we do t h e minor n a u g h t i n e s s e s of o u r c h i l d r e n . The i m p o r t a n t t h i n g
i s t h a t t h e y know r i g h t f r o m wrong; if we observe t h e b a s i c p r i n c i p l e s of E n g l i s h grammar, t h e n c o l l o q u i a l i s m s add a c c e p t a b l e s p i c e
t o o u r language.
But a s i m i l a r t e r m , "mother-in-law's tongue, immediately c a l l s
t o mind a carica-t;ure of a c r i t i c a l , s c o l d i n g busybody. The p l a n t s o
named i s s h a r p , s t a r k , and gloomy i n c o l o r . T h i s i s a gross i n j u s t i c e t o m o s t mothers-in-law.
What c a n we do t o improve t h i s image?
Perhaps we s h o u l d l e a r n and d i s s e m i n a t e t h e b o t a n i c a l name of t h a t
s a d l y maligned p l a n t .

One day n o t l o n g ago I found myself p o n d e r i n g t h e s u b j e c t o f why
we have two i n d e f i n i t e a r t i c l e s ,
and an. [Musings of such e a r t h s h a k i n g importance c a n b e depended upon t o postpone humdrum, absol u t e l y e s s e n t i a l work f o r hours a t a t i m e . ]
The c o n c l u s i o n I r e a c h e d i s t h a t i t i s b a s i c a l l y a m a t t e r of
p r o n u n c i a t i o n : If you t r y t o sa "a ape" i t comes o u t "a yape'l-"a yegg, "a y i [eye],
"a yoke foak],
o r whatever.
T h e r e f o r e , when a word b e g i n s w i t h a vowel o r a s i l e n t h, we
have l e a r n e d t o p r e c e d e i t w i t h an: "an a p e " ; "an h o n e s t m i s t a k e . "
Some w o r d s , such as h i s t o r y , h o t e l , and humble, a p p a r e n t l y had s i l e n t h ' s a t one time b u t now have a s p i r a t e ones.
The p e o p l e i n England who were most p r o n e t o drop t h e i n i t i a l
h sound were t h e Cockneys, who " l i v e d w i t h i n t h e sound o f Bow b e l l s , "

up--1 found it i n t h e d i c t i o n a r y : E l i s i o n ( c a r r y i n g f i n a l consonant
sound over t o t h e n e x t word i f it b e g i n s w i t h a vowel) i s c h a r a c t e r i s t i c o f F r e n c h , n o t E n g l i s h , we know. But t h e word "apron"
evolved f r o m t h e e r r o n e o u s t r a n s f e r of t h e a r t i c l e from "a napron"

A few p o i n t s of s-Lyle m i g h t have been improved: no hyphen was
used w i t h "great-grandmother"; many county names were m i s s p e l l e d

would have been a worthwhile i n v e s t m e n t .
Some typos a r e r a t h e r s e r i o u s : 1751 f o r 1571, c a s e f o r c a u s e ,
r e a d f o r r e a d y , y e a r s f o r h e i r s . The f i r s t example w a s a r e a l shocker:
On page 2 2 , "John had i n h i s p o s s e s s i o n t h e f a m i l y p r a y e r book which
was s e t f o r t h under t h e r e i g n of Queen E l i z a b e t h i n t h e y e a r 1751."
( E l i z a b e t h I d i e d i n 1603.) Next i s s t a t e d t h a t t h e book w a s i n t h e
p o s s e s s i o n of George T h r e a d g i l l i n 1837. Reading t h e s o u r c e , t h e
1837 d e p o s i t i o n , l e a d s me t o wonder if George T h r e a d g i l l meant t h a t
t h e f o r m of t h e p r a y e r book w a s s e t t l e d upon d u r i n g t h e r e i g n o f
4ueen E l i z a b e t h , n o t t h a t t h e copy i n q u e s t i o n w a s p r i n t e d i n 1571.
He made no mention of i t s ownership b e f o r e h i s f a t h e r s one would
expect h i n t o b o a s t of i t if t h e book had been i n t h e f a m i l y two and
a h a l f c e n t u r i e s . A l s o , he p l a i n l y s t a t e d t h a t t h e p r a y e r book w a s
i n h i s mother's possessionp n o t h i s . A s m a l l discrepancy, b u t accuracy of d e t a i l i s ''of t h e essence" i n h i s t o r y and genealogy.
The a u t h o r does n o t s t a t e if s h e examined t h e a c t u a l w i l l s h e
p r i n t e d on pp. 20-21, which s h e concludes w a s i n W i l l i a m ' s own
handwriting because t h e body and s i g n a t u r e appear t o be i n t h e same
hand. If s h e f o u n d t h e w i l l i n a book ( n o t a l o o s e p a p e r ) , I subm i t t h a t i t had been copied t h e r e by a c l e r k , i n c l u d i n g s i g n a t u r e .
On page 87 i s a r e f e r e n c e t o "Egypt, Montgomery County, Texas."
If t h e r e e v e r w a s an E g y p t i n t h a t county,, i t i s n o t even mentioned
as a g h o s t town i n The Handbook of Texas. Egypt i n Wharton County

at least four sons,, Roark, "hornas, Samuel and Felix who
later became a Doctor,
In addition to his sister Mary, Samuel had at least five
brothers, James M,,Pfarion, Roark, John PI,, Jeff and a
second sister Plargaret, Ymes H, Montgomery also became a
doctor and practiced in Smith countyjust across the county
line in Jamestown, Same8 was th@ father of George W O pAgnes
and Mary Elizabeth (Mollbe) who later married Rufus B ,
Spearsp a n early settler of Van Zandt county, Pks, Pi, J,
