Avercamp’s winter landscapes
IJssel cog ship
Hendrick Avercamp ( January 27, 1585 (bapt.) - May
15, 1634 (buried)) is a 16th century painter from
Kampen. Famous even abroad for his paintings
of winter landscapes that often depict skaters.
Avercamp was mute. He was given the nickname
of “de Stomme van Kampen” (the mute of Kampen). You can find his paintings in, for example,
the Stedelijk Museum Kampen.
A unique discovery
was made in the IJssel
at Kampen in 2011.
A medieval IJssel cog
ship was found.
“Ui” (ridiculing) stories from Kampen
An Ui from Kampen is a folkloric reference to a
story about the stupidity of the population of
Kampen that always contains wise advice. Several
“Uien” (ridiculing stories) are known in Kampen.
Every year a cow can be found in the Nieuwe Toren
because of the “High Pasture” story. (Editor: the
tower lost its top after being struck by lightning
and grass grew there. The people of Kampen came
up with the brilliant idea of having a cow eat the
grass, but the poor animal died of fright because it
was hoisted up the tower.)
De IJssel cog ship was
sunk on purpose to
control the IJssel and,
thus, send the turbulent and silting-up
IJssel in the required
direction. Currently,
investigations are taking place to salvage
and preserve the cog
ship.
The Hansa past of the
cultural historic town of
Kampen can still be seen
everywhere in the town.
More than 500 monumental buildings, special façades and 3 of the original
town gates remain from its
history from the golden era
of the town.
Golden Age of Kampen
The hey-day of the Hanseatic League was
between the 12th and 16th centuries. At
its peak, this league counted 208 market
towns. Thanks to the trade and industry, Kampen developed from a simple
settlement to a prosperous trading town
because of it favourable position on the
trading route on which many a ship sailed.
Kampen grew to become one of the most
powerful and leading towns of North West
Europe. You can get a taste of its history
by walking this Hansa route. Finished
walking? You can also shop to your heart’s
content or enjoy a bite to eat in one of the
many stylish restaurants in Kampen.

The walls that are not straight,
the old klinker brick floors and
the wooden duckboards of De
Olifant are permeated with the
aroma of tobacco and cedar
wood. Cigars are still being
produced in this monumental
factory.
Cellebroederspoort
The Cellebroederspoort
medieval gate once stood much
closer to the old town church.
The town gate was moved in
1465 because of the increasing
prosperity during the Hansa era.

Kampen built its first wooden
bridge over the IJssel River in
1448. After many versions of this
bridge, the current town bridge
with golden wheels was opened
in 1999.

Broederpoort
This gate was also moved in
1465. There was no stone town
wall on this side of Kampen, but
an earth rampart to defend the
town.
The Park
The Green Centre of Kampen is
laid in English landscape style.
The Broederpoort and
Cellebroederspoort medieval
gates now serve as the access
gates to the park.

St. Nicolaaskerk or Bovenkerk (N.H.)
The St. Nicolaaskerk (St. Nicholas
Church), which is called the
Bovenkerk (Upper Church) by the
people of Kampen, is the oldest
building in the town. The church
still produces sounds from the
middle ages because of its
special bells.

St. Annakapel (St. Anne’s Chapel)
This church, which is from the
end of the 15th century, was the
church of the nuns who followed
the tradition of the Order of St.
Augustine and were part of the
St. Anna’s convent. The Chapel
was purchased a few years ago
by pianist Jan Vayne.
Linnenweversgildepoortje
The beautiful small gate of the
former “Linen weaving guild”.
The former guild building
behind the gate was used as a
factory for many years.
11
Evangelical Lutheran church
This church is also called the
“Zwaantjeskerk” (Swan Church)
by the people of Kampen. It is in
the shape of a Greek temple.
12 Gothic House
A true Hansa merchant house
built at the end of the 15th
century.
13 Stedelijk Museum Kampen
(Urban Kampen Museum)
Housed in the former town hall.
The old town hall with an
onion-shaped tower was built
around 1350. The new town hall
on the right was added at the
end of the 16th century. The
Stedelijk Museum Kampen has 4
main themes: water, religion,
justice and the House of Orange
and Nassau.
14 Nieuwe Toren
The Nieuwe Toren (New Tower)
characterises the townscape.
The carillon has no fewer than 48
clocks. The tower has a leading
role in one the stories that used
to ridicule the good townspeople
of Kampen.
