Go To Taipei Arena to Cheer on
the Lion Dance Champion
After jumping and twisting through
the air, landing with great agility, only
one lion dance troupe will have the
honor of being crowned Lion Dance
Champion.
Many people think that lion dances
are traditional performances that
only make an appearance at temple
festivals, however, in the last few
years the lion dance has transformed
to become a high pole lion dance
contest. Many lion dance troupes in
Taiwan train assiduously, constantly in
danger of falling from two meter high
poles, in an effort to become world
lion dance champions.
High pole lion dance contests have
been held overseas for many years,
with many held in Asia, the most
notable being the Malaysia Genting
World Lion Dance Championship ,the
Chinatown Singapore International
Lion Dance Competition 2013 and the
Macau MGM International Lion Dance
Invitational Championship .

After meeting them on the set of Confucius a year prior, Fei Mu penned an original
screenplay for the creative team of Jacob and Luise Fleck, Austrian Jews who had
joined many seeking refuge in Shanghai. A love triangle ensues when two men fall
for the same woman and must idealistically resolve their differences in Fei Mu’s
curious story. Fei Mu’s masterful film of seven years later, Spring in a Small Town,
has roots in this wartime collaboration. ※ Double Screening with Song of China

Chinese Lawyers in the Movies: Cao Yu’s Bright Day and its depiction of courts
and lawyers. Although lawyers (both good and bad) appear in other films pre-1949,
this is one of the few in which a lawyer was the central character. Though made
more than sixty years ago, the film remains of interest for the issues it raises about

LOVE LOVE: Animamix Biennale 2013-14
Through the representation of its aesthetics, animation can create a world full of magical imagination outside the reality. In this
world, people are set free from all the constraints of physics, time, space and personal
experiences. People recognize with and love this imaginary world so much so that they
blur and cross over the line between reality and imagination with much fervor. LOVE
LOVE: Animamix Biennale 2013-14 demonstrates mainly the diversified creativity of
new-generation Taiwanese artists and simultaneously exhibited with other Animamix
Biennales held in Daegu of South Korea, Shanghai, Macau, Beijing and Hong Kong in
celebrating the splendid achievements of animation in integrating mass culture and
contemporary art. This exhibition will display nearly 100 works of different forms, such
as painting, installation, video and animation, by over 40 artists.

Joan Miró: Women, Birds, Stars
Celebrated as one of the greatest modern Spanish artists, Joan Miró (1893–1983) created more than
ten thousand artworks in a variety of styles across many media, including oils, prints, sculptures and
mixed media. In a career spanning almost a century, Miró's vision and energy were vividly reflected
in a very personal visual language inspired by the forms and colors he observed in nature. All of
his artworks present aspects of a cosmic panorama, synthesized into a personal system of codes
representing a microcosm of the artist's interior world.
Through some 86 artworks from Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona and the Miró family collection, the
exhibition reveals Miró's mature style of the 60s and 70s, when women, birds and stars became
the major motifs of his artistic expression.

The “2013 Multi-cultural Arts Development
Project: the artist-in-residence PROGRAM “
Among the four indigenous artists who are invited this year, two are from Taiwan: Labay Eyong and Pahaulan Cilan, and the
other two are from New Caledonia: Nicolas Mole and Stéphanie Wamytan. They spent nearly 6 weeks of creation work in KMFA
started from September 12th to October 23rd. Though different in their growth backgrounds and artistic creation rhetoric, the
four indigenous artists who experienced urban environments are common in their confusion, struggle, exploration and making
choices between tribal traditions and modern societies. They infuse their unique interpretations
and perspectives into their works that reflect their understanding and concerns about the times
and lives of humanity. By holding the artist-in-residence program, KMFA aspires to provide a
platform for artists from home and abroad to have more interactions and exchanges of their
life experiences and consequently inspire splendid sparks of artistic creation. The works by the

Oil Paintings by Sheng-yang Cheng
In the twenty-odd years of his artistic life, Sheng-yang Cheng has graced the canvas with
beautiful scenes of the fishing harbor and old houses from his hometown, or daily activities of
local people, all painted with the utmost compassion. Cheng's early works were much influenced
by Cubism; in recent years, the artist has taken a turn to a more simple style which reflects his
lyrical and liberated state of mind.

On the Road, Zhang Hongtu’s Artistic Journey
This exhibition is named after the title of the famous postwar novel On the Road by American writer Jack Kerouac, and provides
a complete look at the artist's artistic journey in New York since he first arrived in the US
in 1982 until the present. Zhang Hongtu's life experiences and the influence of his cultural
backgrounds, particularly his subtle observations of different cultures, enable him to roam in
many domains via his art, and achieve a natural fusion through the demolition of boundaries.
He displayed a highly personal stylistic vocabulary; apart from providing even more angles of
appreciation, he also encourages deeper and broader reflection on the part of viewers. The
works on view include his early works in the US, the Mao series, the Repainting Shan Shui
series, the Shan Shui Today series, etc. This exhibition consists of four sections—"Starting
a New Journey," "Exploring New Horizons," "Breaking through Obstacles," and "Crossing
Boundaries"—to present Zhang's wonderful artistic journey.

40 years of marriage. Through this exhibition, viewers can have a clear picture of their respective
development as an artist through the display of over 100 representative works by this artist couple
and also appreciate the rich life wisdom hidden in their works.

Former Dinglinzihbian Police Station was built in 1898 and was used as a police station until
1989, after which it was left unused. In 2007, it was listed as a historical building due to its police
station form, historical significance and the efforts of local groups to preserve it. The entire space
includes the police station building, the station chief´s dormitory, an old well and a bomb shelter.
Restoration work was completed in 2012.
The police station space was transformed by the Bureau of Cultural Affairs, Kaohsiung City
Government into Linyuan History Classroom which displays local history, culture, industry and
life, creating a diverse cultural space for Linyuan. As well as nurturing the habit of local people of
participating in art and culture, it is also intended to attract more people to learn that Linyuan has
cultural depth and diverse appearance, apart from the petrochemical industry.

Kaohsiung's finest calligraphers have been gathered under one roof for this exhibition,
which is themed around the "appearance" of the current state of calligraphy in Kaohsiung,
and the "lines" of the individual styles of calligraphers. Connecting the development of
traditional and modern calligraphy, this exhibition reveals the diversity of style present in Kaohsiung's calligraphy.

Clay is the most local element. It is molded to display different local characteristics, complementing hydrology, geography, and other
conditions, nurturing different industries and settlement cultures. In the agricultural era, people lived amid the water and grass, and
developed settlements following earth and water. The clay was trampled underfoot, after undergoing adjustment with water and
being quenched by fire, became solid brick, which was built into a house in which to take shelter from the elements. This exhibition
begins from the soil of Kaohsiung, discussing how people used the characteristics of soil to develop ceramics, and how ceramics
flourished, declined and changed. It recounts the development of the southern ceramic brick and tile industry from the Japanese
Colonial Period to the early period after the Retrocession of Taiwan, creating a chain of memories by linking stories of people and
settlements. We’re sure that the public will be introduced to the production and the local culture accumulated within traditional bricks
and tiles, and will reconsider the connection between modern people and earth.

Cieding and Hunei districts are stated in the north-west of Kaohsiung, where Erren River and Tainan City meet. In the past, they
were separated into the two sides of Jockan (The inner sea of Jockan), one of Taiwan's southwest seashore three Great Ancient
Lagoons: Cieding is a sandbank which borders the sea, while Hunei is a dune plain which borders on the land. The development
of the two areas can be traced back to the 17th century, when fishermen from Fuzhou Province gradually settled Cieding. The
Ming-era military garrison policy made many soldiers settle in and develop Hunei, a state of affairs which has continued to
the present day – many of the inhabitants of Cieding fish, while agriculture is prominent in Hunei, while the great fish-ponds
developed in Jockan Lagoon are a sight common to both Cieding and Hunei.
