The Studio
StudioK1 is the lighting design studio within tk1sc - one of the largest engineering firms in Southern
California, and a company with over 45 years of industry experience.
tk1sc has historically provided a unique level of lighting design excellence for an engineering firm, with
hundreds of beautifully lit projects to its name, but with StudioK1, we have expanded our lighting design
capabilities even further and now provide a level of design quality and service second to none.
StudioK1 has brought together a team of award-winning lighting designers with experience in all facets
of lighting design and all project types, including hotels, resorts, restaurants and casinos; cultural centers
and museums; libraries; institutional and educational facilities; commercial and mixed-use developments;
corporate offices; retail; municipal and civic facilities; and themed environments. StudioK1 is capable of
providing lighting design services through all phases of a project from concept through opening, and
can provide distinctive lighting solutions for projects ranging from intimate and elegant interiors to full
cityscapes.
Although StudioK1 is structured to function as a dedicated and independent design group, it is supported
by the infrastructure of a robust one hundred person firm. As much as StudioK1 is designed to provide
lighting design services independent of tk1sc, working in concert, the two firms can provide exceptional
value to a project.
StudioK1 and tk1sc are proud to be members of the US Green Building Council. Our senior designers
are LEED Accredited Professionals and are Lighting Certified. We are also members of the Illuminating
Engineering Society of North America, the International Association of Lighting Designers, and the
American Institute of Architects.

Our Capabilities
StudioK1 provides a full range of lighting design services.
We begin by integrating the aesthetic, programmatic and budgetary concerns of our client and their
consultants to produce a Conceptual and/or Schematic design. This can include full, realistic digital
renderings and initial calculation studies of the lit environment so that the client and their team can see
what their project will look like when completed. This phase can also include budget estimates of lighting
equipment and potential installation costs.

Design Development and Construction Documents are then prepared, once the initial phases are
approved, using CAD software. Lighting fixture specifications and control risers are also developed.
During these phases we also provide additional light level and energy calculations to confirm that our
design conforms to local, national and international energy codes and safety requirements. Unlike most
other lighting design firms, we are capable of engineering the project as well, providing full LEED and Title
24 compliance services.
We then administer the project through completion and opening, guiding the client and their contractors
through the many questions and adjustments that a large architectural project engenders. Finally, we
supervise the focus of the lighting fixtures and the programming of the control equipment to sculpt and
refine the lit environment to the requirements of the client.

Sustainable
Making a difference means not only creating aesthetically significant designs, but doing so
with issues of sustainability, environmental sensitivity, and maintainability in the forefront of
our minds. We work within the most environmentally forward-thinking state in the country,
with some of the most stringent energy and light pollution control codes and ordinances in
the world. We have over twenty LEED APs on our staff who have designed numerous projects
at the forefront of sustainability. Even if your project is not in California, but you are looking
for lighting designers who understand how to achieve design excellence while reducing your
carbon footprint, this is our specialty.

Salwa has been working with light and space for over twenty years.
With an architecturally trained eye, Salwa uses light to express a ‘fourth’ dimensionality to architectural form, she pairs that with the technical skill and know-how that enable her to achieve the
results desired. She approaches lighting design in a holistic manner that is sensitive to form, function,
environment, energy performance and budget, all while paying tribute to the architectural design
intent.
Prior to joining StudioK1, Salwa worked for Horton Lees Brogden Lighting Design in San Francisco
and for Venice lighting design firm Alfred Scholze Associates. Her many years of involvement in
all phases of the lighting design process have equipped her with a diverse experience in managing
projects of varying types and scales. She works in concert with the client to develop lighting design
solutions and is responsible for the preparation of design documents, complete fixture specifications,
cost analysis, Lighting Power Density calculations to ensure compliance with local energy codes
as well as providing value-engineering solutions to accommodate project budget changes and
