your face, I won’t say
goodbye my friend, for
you and I will meet

Last Dance With Maryjane
By Faith M. Hornberger
Growing up in a town where many around you have or still are ‘dancing with Maryjane’ it’s difficult to sit back and watch in constant wonder about the
feeling, of what it must be like being high. Maryjane is another word for pot or as most know it as Marijuana. “Maryjane” opens your mind to things you
could never even imagine. She takes you to a place away from reality that is so dream-like. Picture this place, where nothing matters, and all your worries
just vanished into the smoke you exhaled. Sounds like perfection, heavenly, and beautiful right? For the time being sure it is. When you’re coming down or
off of her sweet blissful seemingly perfect high, everything comes rushing back towards you. It’s back to reality before you know it, same problems, stress,
and struggle as before, but nothing is worse so it’s not such a horrible thing, right? Wrong!
Dancing with Maryjane is like a dance with the devil. Imagine this, you’re out with friends, getting high and forgetting all your worries and troubles.
Unexpectedly the cops show up. Now you have a record. Sure if you’re lucky that will go away when you turn 18, but how do you think your parents will
feel about you now, Proud? Highly doubt that. They are going to be in constant wonder weather they can trust you, so that means that you are on constant
watch, but who listens to parents anymore? Of course you will sneak around behind their backs just to get high to escape your newfound problems.
You will be blaming your parents for not trusting you, and because you feel as if you have done nothing wrong. Fighting with them for no reason saying
you hate them, and saying it’s their fault for anything and everything that goes wrong in your life will follow. Sneaking out on a school night to be with
your friends, end up smoking thinking all of your problems will be gone. Now you’re to the point where you are so high that you will do anything for fun
or a thrill, maybe a tattoo from one of your friends. At the time it seems fun. No turning back now, it’s done. At the time all that goes through your head is
how brave you were and how much fun you and your friends are having. Never once thinking of how that tattoo will affect the future you. Military? Out of
the question now, depending where you have the tattoo. Jobs? Some employers might not even give you a chance now because of your new tattoo.
What if instead of a tattoo you decide to go on a burn run with your friends? driving in the middle of nowhere, with music blasting while you pass the
bowl to the driver after hitting it first, then looking around laughing and enjoying the moment, -taking it all in. All of a sudden you are being flung out
of your seat, your head bashing off of things unknown. The music mutes the sound of your screams. The pain is so intense that you can’t even scream for
help, let alone move. The car had swerved off the road and rolled. Glass is everywhere. It’s getting harder to breathe now and all of a sudden everything
goes black.
All in but a miere moment of enjoying life with no worries, you lost yours for good. How will the survivors feel? How will your parents feel when they
get a call in the middle of the night to come identify your lifeless body? Didn’t think they’d care? They loved you and were only trying to protect you from
something like this; they’ll say they were too hard on you. What about when your school principle is notified that he has to make an announcement telling
students to take a moment of silence for your tragic death. Students will talk and wonder what actually went down. When your best friend finds out they
will be unable to speak because they won’t know what to think, while analyzing everything in the last hours they spent with you and wishing they could
have stopped you from making that choice.
So was dancing with Maryjane really worth it? Losing the trust of your parents, ruining successful job opportunities, or having your life taken from you. If
you answered yes to any of these questions then I believe that there is something wrong with you. Don’t ruin a precious thing such as your life or the life of
loved ones just for a high that only lasts a few hours. It’s never worth it in the end.

“The BeatBox King” by Christian
Dale by Stephen Latsha Duganitz
There is one fine lad that I know
Who spits some pretty dope flows
His eyes are deep blue
His beard hairs are few
But his rhymes and lines
He was rushed away
Will make you want to say “ooooo”
But was forced to stay
That’s ‘ol Dave Derk
He went home in a week But that’s the Beat Box King to you
But was still a bit of a
He’s fly and he’s fresh
freak
But he’s a great friend too
Titleless by Max Morrison
I once knew a male
Who’s name was dale
He drunk a lot of ale
But went very pale
Fear fills me through and through, As I lay in bed confused. The numbness
I had is leaving me,
The walls I built around me are breaking, And slowly I’m beginning to feelonce again.
Where am I? Where do I belong? Who am I?
To the Senior Class of 2014,
The past few years have passed by with the blink of an
eye and it’s hard to believe we stand here on the threshold of your graduation. Your class has provided us
with countless amazing memories through the years.
We think fondly of the times in middle school, where
we first saw you and at that moment knew that you
were a special class. You were fun, friendly, respectful,
personable, studious, and considerate. We’ve watched
you grow and mature to become the adults we see
before us now and know that you are still that special
group of young individuals.
You have had many accomplishments in academics,
extra-curricular activities and sports. You toiled away
selling whoopie pies, participated in various other
fundraisers throughout the years and were able to produce the Cirque de la Lune prom in 2013. Mr. Keller
opened the show as the ringmaster and we hope your
memories from the photo booth are with you forever.
Thank you for everything you did to make that night
extraordinary.
The Class of 2014 will always hold a special place in
our hearts and all of Shamokin Area School District.
We are honored to be your advisors and we wish each
and every one of you happiness, prosperity and success
as you move into a new chapter in your lives.
Best wishes,
Mrs. Rossnock & Mrs. Kelchner

It isn’t hard to see, our sports teams aren’t quite what they used to
be, particularly football. The only real sports we have left that are
really competitive anymore are basketball and I think volleyball.
But I’m a football player, so I’ll write about football.
First off, it isn’t that everything is terrible, there actually is
plenty of good going on. The coaches have the kids lifting, and I
think this is just what we needed. However, lots of underclassmen
don’t show up, and how are they going to be bigger and stronger
if they don’t show? That’s the problem. The typical coal region
football player has turned from a feared, respectable athlete into a
lazy, scrawny, squirt who can barely bench his own body weight.
Again, this is not all the players. There are athletes who
work very hard and push themselves, but it’s only just a small percentage that does. If every player went to his limits and beyond,
there would be a change. We should even lift on our own.
Another problem is the lack of kids. We play AAA ball,
which is pretty hard to do when you have barely 35 kids on the
team, maybe 20 that are actually capable of competing at the varsity level. Guys need to get off their couches and onto the field.
The coaches will do what they want and the people can
argue it all day. In the end it is our job to execute what they put
on paper. The future really is in the kid’s hands. Either the attitude
changes and we get bigger, faster, stronger, and smarter than our
opponents, or we will continue on this awful downward spiral.
It’s gotten to the point where we even expect defeat and the fans
laugh at it. This area is rich in tradition, but it is as if it all is slipping away. Whether it is our generation that begins it again or
not, I know some class soon will make a change. This is enough,
being pushed around and being a laughing stock.

Local Legends

All regions have mysteries and the unexplainable. Urban legends and horror stories will always quickly form from anything remotely questionable. These stories are usually created by local kids, sometimes even by parents attempting to make a point. Shamokin
is no exception to this. We also have a fair share of our own urban legends, perhaps some truth could even be in them.
One of the most popular is the “Witch’s Tomb” in the Shamokin cemetery on High and Anthracite Street. This rather large tomb
is red and white in appearance and features engravings of upside down torches on it. There’s an entire family buried down there, as
the names engraved on the sides of this tomb indicate. The most famous one is Harry Clay. The legend goes that a family of witches
got discovered and the townspeople took them from their homes and buried them under the tomb. The upside down torches are supposedly meant to symbolize them burning in hell and if they attempt to dig their way out of the grave, they will be burned and sent
back down. The legend continues to say that if you placed your fingers in the two holes on Harry’s side of the tomb and say his name
aloud then he will appear before you and—well, I’ll let you gather how that one ends. Care to take a visit to the cemetery and try this
one out?
The next legend also features a witch. The story takes place near Numidia, up on the hill. The hill is nicknamed “Gravity Hill” or
the “Witch’s Hill”. It’s said that a witch lived on the hill all alone until one day the villagers came to kill her for her abilities in witchcraft.
The witch, outraged and attempting to save herself, cursed the hill so the villagers could not get to her home. It’s said to still be cursed.
This one can be tested out in current day. If you take your car up onto the hill and park it, it will still roll away from the house, which is
in the complete opposite direction gravity would permit! My father took me up there once, years ago, and our car indeed did start going backwards. I highly recommend trying it out yourself!
The last local story I’m going to share if one that’s become known all over the U.S. It’s said to have the only graves of its kind in
all of the U.S. In Catawissa where the old Mt. Zion cemetery use to be (across from the Clayton School) are graves with cages placed
over them. They’re commonly nicknamed the “Hooded Graves”. The cages are placed over the graves to keep the family buried there
from breaking out and attacking the people. The family was said to be accused of being werewolves. It rumored that if you touch the
cages you’ll immediately feel a sharp shock. Seeing as how it’s the only graves of its kind in all of America, something shady had to be
going on there—right?

PAGE 7 Greatest Horror Movies
Horror
Horror has always had a great influence in entertainment, to the point
that it’s hard to go a month without hearing about a new movie claiming to be
“the most frightening of the year”. More often than not, the movies don’t meet
up to this hype. This is usually due to senseless gore or overused plots. After all,
a movie isn’t a satisfying experience unless there’s a good story behind it. Horror plots in movies generally ranges from the supernatural to reenactments of
actual serial killer cases.
In Western films, movies are usually adaptations of books or revamps of older
movies. Sometimes this works, most of the time it doesn’t. Examples of horrorthemed books turned into movies are basically anything by Stephen King: The
Shining, Misery, It, and Pet Cemetery. Revamps of the same story are movies
like, Carrie, The Evil Dead, Thirteen Ghosts, and The Stepfather. While I’m not
saying these are bad films, as some of them are pretty well done and certainly
hit the fear factor, it’s also worth pointing out that they aren’t scary in the slightest compared to some other countries horror movies.
Japan is well known for its horror movies, some even are deem as so
terrifying that they go international. The Grunge and The Ring are perfect
examples of this. Some critics even go as far to say that Japan makes the best
horror films. For this article, I have spent my weekend watching numerous
Japanese horror films and I feel more than obligated to agree. When it comes to
maintaining a thought provoking story, gallons of gore and likeable characters,
Japan certainly hits the mark.
One of the most famous horror films in Japan is Ichi The Killer. The
movie revolves around Kakihara, a murderous sadomasochist, and enforcer of
the Anjo gang. The leader of his gang goes missing and Kakihara goes on the
hunt looking for him. It quickly is suggested that Ichi, a demented but outwardly nice guy, killed the boss. Kakihara, seeing that Ichi is even more brutal than
himself, seeks out to find Ichi and possibly gain the chance to relish in being
killed by him. Pretty messed up characters and plot, but somehow, it works.
The film was definitely one of the better ones I’ve seen, and at times I was even
laughing. Though that’s not something you’re ordinarily suppose to be doing
while watching a horror film, it certainly gives Ichi The Killer a unique edge.
The movie has some pretty gory and mature scenes, so watching it with children
under 16 isn’t an option. The film even starts out with Ichi masturbating to a girl
getting brutally raped and tortured before he ejaculates, spelling out the title of
the film. Within ten minutes of the movie you witness at least three deaths and
Kakihara cutting out his own tongue. However, if you’re one who can handle
mature themes and are looking for a real horror movie, this is definitely one to
see. As a horror movie, I’m going to give it an 8/10, just because of how mature,
gory and intense most of the scenes are. On an overall movie level, the humor
and likeable characters bumps it up to a 9/10.
GRADUATION 2014
The next movie I watched was one I was highly anticipating. It was said to be the only movie
that scared Rob Zombie, a fellow horror movie creator. This movie, The Audition, didn’t
meet my expectations. The movie itself is pretty good, but it wasn’t at all what I was expecting after hearing the great reviews. It takes around an hour into the film for anything even
remotely horror-like to start happening, though it’s set up like that for good reason. The
movie stars a Japanese business man, Shigeharu who has been widowed for years. After a
conversation with his son, who urges him to get remarried and pursue a happier life, Shigeharu meets up with one of his good friends to discuss his dating options. His friend and
coworker, Yasuhisa, devises the plan to act like they’re filming a movie and send out casting
flyers saying they need a young woman as the lead role. Yasuhisa convinces Shigeharu this is
the best option they have as it will allow them to get insight into the women before Shigeharu even has to try dating one of them. Many girls audition, but only one catches Shigeharu’s
eye. It becomes apparent quite quickly that the girl, Asami, isn’t as innocence as she originally appeared to be. In—possible—reality she’s murderous, and has been romancing men only
to dismember them later if she believes they love someone other than herself. The movie
ends in a semi-cliff hanger, since it’s possible that Asami wasn’t actually a murderer at all. It’s
open up for debate on if the events seen are reality or if they’re a figment of Shigeharu’s mind
and just personifying his inner fear of commitment. Horror level, I got to low ball this movie
and give it a 5/10. Overall, it reaches a 7/10.

GRADUATION 2014
Greatest Horror Movies Continued
The last movie I’m going to give my review on is Grotesque. This movie can only
be summed up as brutal, graphic and full of gore. The whole point of the movie
is “How much can you handle?” It was literally made simply to disturb and gross
its viewers. The plot of the movie is that an unnamed deranged killer kidnaps a
young couple and ties them up in his basement. They are shackled to metal beds
(the beds are standing upright) and are gagged. The madman spends the whole
film torturing them in various ways and harassing them mentally, only to heal
their wounds afterwards. (It’s later mentioned that the madman was a doctor of
sorts in his everyday life.) In the first five minutes, Kazuo, the young man that’s
kidnapped, gets his tongue sliced and his stomach repeatedly punctured with a
screwdriver. The film also features forced cannibalism and lots of sexual themes.
This movie surprisingly contains more graphic scenes then Ichi The Killer, so
again, it’s definitely not a film for a younger audience or people with low tolerance for torture scenes. What makes the movie an excellent horror is that although it’s over the top, it’s also realistic. Everything that happens to the young
couple is quite plausible in our everyday life, and to make it even more realistic, it
doesn’t end in favor of the good guys. The film ends with the couple getting brutally killed and the killer getting away with everything. As a horror and overall
film, I’m going to give Grotesque a clean 10/10.
After mentioning all those Japanese films, I feel obligated to list a good
Western film. Seven, or Se7en as it’s sometimes listed, is an extremely good film.
Two detectives, played by Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, are on the hunt for the
latest serial killer, played by Kevin Spacey. This particularly serial killer is bent
on killing seven people, all whom have committed one of the seven deadly sins.
(Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Pride, Wrath and Envy.) This movie definitely has
a lot of action, and gives a lot about the character’s backgrounds and families.
Though at first these all feel like time-fillers, in the end it all comes together to
create one the best plot twists there is. I’m not going to spoil this plot twist, but
I’ll say the last five minutes of this movie alone is a big enough reason to see it.
On a horror movie level, I’m going to have to give this movie a 6/10. I wasn’t
scared at all, but I understand how one could be. On an overall movie level, Seven
definitely deserves a 9/10.

Symptoms of a Serial Killer
Article By: Scarlett Brown
GRADUATION 2014
There have been thousands of serial killers in history, in all parts of the world. Some have been globally famous, like Jack
The Ripper, and others cases’ have remained in the shadows. Though their killing methods and even victims of choice may
be different, all serial killers can be classified as suffering from all the same things. After reading from many different entries
written by various professionals, I’ve compiled a list of the common symptoms serial killers suffer from. Before I get into the
actual list, as it’s pretty short and straight forward, I figured this article wouldn’t be much fun unless I included descriptions
of some famous serial killers. Let’s face it, what’s a serial killer article without its main men?
The serial killer I’m going to personally deem as the most brutal is Jeffrey Dahmer. If you’ve read or heard
anything about this man, you could also easily conclude this yourself. Dahmer was a serial killer, rapist and
cannibal from the late 70s to early 90s. He was only ever found to have killed 17 people, though the suspected
number is much greater. In fact, it’s common belief that he killed one person every week during the later years
of his sprees. Kidnapping young men from the ages 14 to 36 and killing them by strangulation was his method of
choice. Dahmer was also known for dismembering his victims and engaging in necrophilia. After list, he would
either eat, or engage in sexual with the victim’s organs. Dahmer’s killing was stopped by his sentence to life in
jail; however he didn’t stay there long. A fellow inmate killed Dahmer, who reportedly didn’t react at all or cry
out. It’s most likely he knew death was inevitable for him at this point and openly welcomed it. In his last phone
call with his mother, Dahmer stated he didn’t care what happened to him and if he died, he died.
Ted Bundy is just as famous as Dahmer, though their styles and
victims were entirely different. While Dahmer went for full out
brutality, Bundy was one for manipulation. Bundy was known locally as an extremely good looking fellow, and he used this to his
advantage. He would prey on women, knowing they would trust
him without hesitation due his looks and charismatic personality.
After coaxing them to whatever location he wanted, he would hit
them over the head and raped them. He’s known to have killed
around 36, though the number for actual killings is said to be over
a 100. Bundy’s killing also came to an end by a prison sentence,
though Bundy died via the electric chair. His last words were, “I’d
like you to give my love to my family and friends.” Afterwards,
his attorney made an open statement saying, “Ted was the very
definition of heartless evil.”
PAGE 10
Horror
Symptoms of a Serial Killer Continued
GRADUATION 2014
After reading about Albert Fish, I find it hard
to believe that Bundy was the “definition of
heartless evil.” Perhaps this attorney had never
stumbled upon Fish’s case. Fish’s cruel acts took
placed during 1924 to 1932. His victims were
only ever children, and he not only killed them,
but tortured, raped and even ate them. Outwardly, he appeared to be a loving, gentle grandfather type. However, in reality he had molested
over 400 children (most of which he later killed).
This man, when confessing to his crimes, even
boasted that he “had a kid in every state” and
stated, “I like children, they’re tasty.” Even when
getting executed, it’s rumored that Fish took the
whole thing into a fantasy of pleasure.
These men are clearly all terrible, but it’s also apparent they’re completely different from one another. Even in last words, no two serial
killers are similar. For example, Ned Kelley simply said, “Such is life.” While Steven Judy owed up to his mistakes, his last statement being, “I don’t hold any grudges. This is my doing. Sorry it happened.” Some killers would rather go out as a comic relief, such as Thomas
J Grasso, “I did not get my Spaghetti O’s. I got spaghetti. I want the press to know this.” And Tom Ketchum with, “I’ll be in hell before
you start breakfast, boys. Let her rip.” And lastly, some even prefer to go intense and unsettling. Peter Kurten died after saying, “Tell
me. After my head has been chopped off, will I still be able to hear, at least for a moment, the sound of my own blood gushing from the
stump of my neck? That would be a pleasure to end all pleasures.” So, what exactly ties all these men together? Well, they are suffer from
everything I’m about to mention.
Studies have shown that serial killers at an early age are rather violent towards animals and come from unstable homes. 60% of
killers were bed wetters as children. Killers are generally high in intelligence, but perform poorly in academics at school. Showing high
antisocial behavior and hatred towards their parents are also common. Many suffer from depression and have suicide attempts. Playing
with fire from an early age is also common occurrence. 90% of all killers are male, and many are white (which was the case for the serial
killers I have previously mentioned). Perhaps people don’t really have a choice in what they do in life, as all things seem to revert back to
one’s own character. If all killers contain these symptoms, then how can we say for sure they had any choice in who they became? Maybe
it is all predetermined and set out before us, psychologically.

GRADUATION 2014
So many people are obsessed with what they see in the mirror, or
what the scale reads. There’s an overwhelming amount of meal plans
and weight loss supplements that are supposed to work miraculously.
These plans and supplements gain their following by claiming that
one can lose weight without dieting or exercise.
This is the ultimate example of laziness and unhealthiness. To lose
weight one must exercise to shed fat and gain muscle. Not only should
people be exercising to lose weight; they should be exercising to improve their overall health.
There shouldn’t be such a focus on losing weight. The focus should
be on bettering oneself and staying healthy. If people are only concerned with how they look and what pants size they are, they’re at risk
There are certain trends which girls feel the need to follow. One of the bigfor developing health problems.
gest is the “thigh gap”. Thigh gaps are seen as the staple of being thin and
beautiful.Girls are starving themselves to reach something that is so superficial and shallow. It’s been shown that having a thigh gap has little to do with
the amount of fat on one’s body. For a girl to have a thigh gap she needs to
have wide hips.
The largest problem with the thigh gap is that girls are unaware of the
science behind why they can’t “achieve” one. On the other hand some girls
refuse to believe it. They think that by constantly dieting and working out
the will achieve their ideal body. Realistically, that’s like a short person
stretching to grow taller.
THIGH GAPS
FINGER TIPS
STANDARDS
Beauty is much more complex than being under 130 pounds
or having size 00 pants .There is no right or wrong when
comes to facial features or weight or clothing size. It’s been
said a million times, but everyone has their own standards for
beauty. What is attractive to one person may not be the next.
This trend that started in China is rather new. A finger trap is a supposed beauty test that will tell one if they are beautiful or ugly. How
is this done? One must simply place their index finger from the chin
to the nose. If their lips are able to touch their index finger, then they
are beautiful. If not, they’re ugly. How this proves that an individual is
beautiful is eluding.

“The maker of Magic”; founded Walk Disney Company in 1923. I
bet you all want to know his inspiration. Well, Here it is! Walk got
inspired while he sat on a bench watching his daughter play at an
amusement park. He noticed how dull and filthy it was. It was very
boring. The parents wanted to go home right away. Walt sat there
conjuring and planning a new type of amusement park. A clean
one; one that will have many attractions for people of all ages.
This idea turned out to be Disneyland. Walt thought about
how this park would be, even before construction began. He visited
many places, while doing this he dreamed of a “Mickey Mouse
Park.” Along with a western village, and Main Street.
Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955. On opening day, Walt
had a grin from ear to ear, a limp in his throat, and a tear streaming
down his cheek. Walt had finally realized his dream. Right after Disneyland opened he said “we are gonna kick ourselves for not buying
everything within a radius of ten miles around here.” He was visualizing the growth of Disneyland and the space around it. He always
wanted to know EVERYTHING that was going on throughout the
park. He knew EVERYTHING about Disneyland; for example: the
prices of food, tickets, and the names of every worker. Even though
Walt is no longer with us to see how much his park grew in the 21st
Century, his legacy still lives with us every single day

The Life Lessons
The Disney Princesses have taught us many life lessons, even some ironic
ones. Pocahontas taught us that you can paint with all the colors of the
wind. Mulan showed us that any women can do what a man can do and in
Mulan, both Shang and Mulan learn (and teach each other) the importance
of honesty. The Little Mermaid taught us to see past the differences, like
how Ariel sees beyond Eric’s human legs and her mermaid tail. True love
can save you...literally, Snow White &Prince Florian proved that. When you
click with the right person, then you know it’s meant to be, as Cinderella and
Prince Charming prove in Cinderella. Prince Charming could have had any

Mosquito-borne virus spreads rapidly
throughout Haiti, now 1,529 cases
A mosquito-borne virus that was found for the first time in Haiti last
week has quickly spread all over the Caribbean nation. Some 1,529
cases of the chikungunya virus have been confirmed, said Ronald
Singer, a spokesman for Haiti’s health ministry. The bulk of the cases,
about 900 of them, were found in the west department, where the
capital of Port-au-Prince is located. Another 300 cases were confirmed in northwestern Haiti.
Darden keeps Olive Garden,
announces plan to sell Red Lobster
for $2.1 billion
18 miners ‘still trapped’ after Turkey fire
Darden, the company, which is based in Orlando, Florida, said
Friday that it would sell its seafood chain to investment company
Golden Gate Capital for $2.1 billion. The announcement came
despite oppositions in a plan to separate Red Lobster, which was
announced late last year. Both Olive Garden and Red Lobster
have been losing customers in recent years, even as they changed
their menus and marketing campaigns to win back business. Part
of the problem is the growing popularity of places like Chipotle
and Panera, where customers feel they can get the same quality of
food without paying as much or waiting for table service.
Three days after an explosion and fire tore through a mine in western
Turkey, 18 miners are believed still to be trapped below ground. The
death toll could rise to as many as 302 if the 18 men thought still to
be in the Soma coal mine have all died following the blaze. It was
only in the first 24 hours after the blast that anyone was pulled out
alive. Autopsies have revealed that those killed after the blast and fire
died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

If you have ever read a book based on a TV show or movie, you
know it is almost word for word. Then why, when you watch a movie
or TV show based on a book are there always major differences? It
doesn’t seem fair.
I understand that books are long and not everything can be
fit into an allotted time, but I can’t comprehend why directors add
things that authors never intended, such as new characters or scenes.
A book is original. It’s how the author intended the story to play out.
It seems disrespectful for a director to think they could “improve”
something they had no part in creating.
