He is the lead singer for the R&B‐pop group “The Philosopher Kings,” which had reached its peak popularity in the late 1990s. During the group’s 7‐year hiatus, he began a solo career, releasing the album “Shake it Off” in 2002 under the stage name, Jarvis Church. From there Church would go on to release two more solo albums, and begin his collaboration with The Soul Station. With a reputation forged in fire, brimstone and magic, plus a collective view of the world that seems increasingly prophetic, Killing Joke have long been one of rock’s most iconic and influential names, with a string of revered recordings to their name. Their story (and it’s an extraordinary one) dates back to 1978 and the post‐punk scene of West London, where classically‐trained musician and vocalist Jaz Coleman, drummer Big Paul Ferguson, bassist Youth and guitarist Geordie set about establishing a new and idiosyncratic manifesto for reinventing the rock ‘n’ roll wheel. Since 2009, when this original line‐up re‐entered the studio, Spinefarm Records has been the home for the band, releasing the ‘Absolute Dissent’ album in 2010, the ‘MMXII’ album in 2012 and the ‘Singles Collection’ in 2013; and now, in 2015, with the world descending ever further into chaos, comes 16th and latest studio outing, ‘Pylon’. As with all KJ releases, ‘Pylon’ isn’t designed to accompany a quiet night at home; these 10 tracks (produced by the band and Tom Dalgety, whose recent credits include the hugely successful Royal Blood album) are very much music as ritual – raw, uncompromising and precisely‐targeted lyrically. ** One way sale Talk To Strangers is the bewitching debut album from Suffolk‐born singer‐songwriter Fiona Bevan. Bevan describes her debut album as “pop in disguise”, and the dozen, dynamic songs have hooks, harmonies and melodies that linger from first listen, but are defiantly timeless and purposely hard to pin down. Bevan, who has already tasted success as a chart‐topping songwriter for One Direction, wrote all 12 songs on Talk To Strangers, which was recorded in producer Shawn Lee’s Bloomsbury studio on entirely analogue equipment. Fiona Bevan has already established a stellar career as an in‐demand songwriter. As well as commissions for film, classical compositions, and a Tate exhibition, she co‐wrote Little Things with Ed Sheeran, a 2012 No.1 single for One Direction. Last year, Bevan wrote, recorded and toured with jazz vocalist Gwyneth Herbert. With the group appearing on the cover of Now Magazine’s Christmas issue, and their Polaris long‐listed debut LP “I” making it onto 2013 best‐of lists from Now, The Grid, BlogTO, Torontoist, the Toronto Star, and a raft of indie blogs, Fresh Snow’s new directions in instrumental music are clearly something that the critics agree on. “They can shift from Godspeed to Kraftwerk to Mogwai within the same song, and then segue to eminently danceable synth‐led disco a few minutes later with some pleasantly woozy violin lines offering a decidedly human counterpoint to the mechanical rhythms driving things” wrote Chromewaves blogger Frank Yang. Born in a dive bar on Toronto’s Bloor Street in 2010, four friends gathered to make improvisational music based on their love of drones, noise and—less obviously—strongly melodic pop music. Since their first show in 2011, Andy Lloyd (bass, keys), Brad Davis (guitars, keys), Jon Maki (drums), and Tim Condon (keys, etc) have released a split 7” single with METZ, a full‐length album, “I” (Reel Cod Records), and a cover of ‘Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle’, featuring vocals by Julie Fader on the Nirvana tribute album, Milkin’ It (Hand Drawn Dracula). They have performed at NXNE, Wavelength, Long Winter, Electric Eclectics, Arboretum, Festival, along with venues throughout Ontario and in Montreal putting on their live show that’s featured them in red hoods, wooden masks, and playing inside a pod full of projectors. Primarily an instrumental band with a core line‐up augmented by guest horn and string players (including Trent Severn’s Laura C. Bates), Fresh Snow is not easy to pigeonhole. Their upcoming EP, scheduled for release in Canada on Hand Drawn Dracula in July 2015, will explore different sides of the band’s aesthetic, and features vocal appearances by Diana’s Carmen Elle, and Fucked Up’s Damian Abraham. Just as they are prone to wearing masks onstage, so they are intent on keeping listeners guessing what they’ll do next. To coincide with their recently announced farewell tours, and due
to popular demand, Bellowhead will be releasing an album of
some of the best loved tracks from the band’s five studio albums
: ‘Pandemonium – The Essential Bellowhead.’
This career retrospective includes 13 carefully selected tracks by
the 11 band members, designed to represent some of the high
points of their stellar 11 year career.
Formed in 2004, the band scarcely imagined that one day they’d
be headlining major UK and international festivals and selling out
tours of major concert halls, or that they’d sell in excess of
250,000 albums, including the highest selling independently
released traditional album of all time (Hedonism) and the highest
charting independently-released UK folk album of all time too

This duo produces no small acoustic sound. Connor whose
background is firmly in rock and blues (citing Rory Gallagher as
a big influence) is equally proficient on piano and electric guitar.
He also plays stomp, which creates a driving groove and with the

The accordionist from Ireland has achieved legendary status

accordion 'cool' in her home country. She is renowned for her
collaborations, not just in Irish traditional music, but through all
musical genres, Hip-Hop, Cajun, Country, Classical and Rap.
She’s recorded and toured with a who's who of the Irish and
Global Music Industry, including Bono, Adam Clayton, Sinead

Carl Perkins was the most important of the rockabilly artists
who came to prominence as one of the as part of the explosion
of rock 'n' roll during the middle years of the 1950s. His
landmark hit "Blue Suede Shoes" became one of the most
covered and performed songs of the era, a staple of the
repertoire of every rock 'n' roll band around the world.
As one of the core of artists who recorded at Sam Phillips' Sun
Studios in Memphis alongside Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and
Jerry Lee Lewis, he was central to the development of the
sound which changed the face of popular music. Paul
McCartney once observed that "if there were no Carl Perkins,
there would be no Beatles". Perkins came to personify the
rockabilly style, since he stayed true to it over the years, and he
rightfully became known as "The King Of Rockabilly". This
collection comprises the A and B sides of all his singles and all
the album tracks released on Sun and then Columbia from his
debut in 1955 through to 1962 in a great value 53-track 2-CD
set, and it's a fine showcase for his distinctive style and unique
talent.

Dexter Gordon was one of the first tenor saxophonists to
embrace the new bebop jazz idiom being developed by the likes
of Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Bud Powell during the mid1940s, and went on to enjoy a career which eventually
encompassed four decades. His musical philosophy was that he
played to entertain and communicate with his audience, and with
his imposing 6' 6" stature and jocular stage presence, allied to
his big sound, he was a highly distinctive performer.
He was a major force in the development of modern saxophone
style, building on the influences of Lester Young to become
himself an influence on the likes of Sonny Rollins and John
Coltrane. This collection focuses on the first decade or so of his
recording career, from his 1941 recording debut with The Lionel
Hampton Orchestra and sessions with The Billy Eckstine
Orchestra and Dizzy Gillespie, then incarnations of his own small
groups, most notably his legendary tenor sax 'duels' with Wardell
Gray in the late '40s and early '50s through to 1952, when his
career was interrupted for a few years by brushes with the law
over his drug use. It includes several of the marvellously exciting
extended 'live' performances with Gray, which along with the
studio recordings provide an entertaining insight into his artistry.

It's no exaggeration to say that without Lonnie Johnson, blues
guitar would not have developed as it did. He was one of the
true pioneers and originators of the genre, and his influence
resonates through the playing of later blues guitar legends,
including Robert Johnson and T-Bone Walker, and B.B. King
cites him as a primary source of inspiration. His owed his
versatility on guitar, violin and piano to his upbringing in the
musical hotbed of New Orleans, and in his early recordings he
spanned the worlds of jazz and blues with ease, working with
the likes of Louis Armstrong's Hot Five, Duke Ellington's
Orchestra and guitarist Eddie Lang, as well as some of the top
blues singers of the day.
This great-value 48-track 2-CD set traces the first quartercentury or so of a recording career that was interrupted by a
decline in fortunes during the Depression but which saw him
climb back to popularity during the 1940s with R&B hits on the
King label. It provides an excellent showcase for his genuinely
unique talent and highly adaptable technique, and admirably
demonstrates why his recordings had such an impact on
emerging stars of the time.

The 4 Seasons were and are one of the greatest vocal groups in
the history of pop music, and their music has been plentifully
available since the “dawn” (pun intended) of the CD reissue era.
But there remains a very large gap in their catalog: their original
albums have NEVER been available on CD in their original mono
mixes !Which really makes no sense; not only were most
consumers buying and listening to mono albums during the early
and mid ‘60s, when the bulk of The 4 Seasons’ album catalog
was released, but also the mono mixes were what the group and
its producer Bob Crewe concentrated on and approved.
Now, Real Gone Music is embarking on a monorail, er, monaural
ride through the 4 Seasons album catalog, releasing the original
mono album mixes on CD in chronological order,all taken from

English-born conductor/arranger George Melachrino was the
RCA label’s answer to the Decca label’s Mantovani. Along with
his famed Music for Moods series, which provided sumptuous
soundtracks for every occasion, from dining to daydreaming to
studying to sleeping, his most beloved recordings were his two
Christmas albums. The first, 1954’s mono release Christmas in
High Fidelity, became a perennial best seller and has been
reissued in the compact disc era. However, the second, 1959’s
Christmas Joy, which took full advantage of the stereo
recording techniques pioneered by RCA’s “Living Stereo”
series, makes its worldwide CD debut here. It’s hard to
conceive of a musical genre more suited for the freedom stereo
afforded in the studio than the orchestral easy listening that
was Melachrino’s métier, and here the maestro offers
widescreen interpretations of 12 songs from the original
Christmas in High Fidelity album and adds four more tunes
from the lighthearted side of the holiday songbook, including
“Christmas Alphabet,” “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,”
“Jingle Bells” and “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town.” This

If Dick’s Picks Vol. 8 presented arguably the single most famous
show in the Grateful Dead canon—5/2/70 at Harpur College in
Binghamton—then Dick’s Picks Vol. 4 presents the most famous
stand of shows in the band’s long history of touring, the 2/13/702/14/70 shows at the Fillmore East in New York. Just how good
were the three sets that comprised each show? Well, when LSD
chemist and band benefactor Owsley Stanley produced the
official release History of the Grateful Dead, Vol. 1 (Bear’s
Choice), he lifted portions of each night’s first set and acoustic
second set in assembling that record, yet there was enough
(very) strong material left over to make Dick’s Picks Vol. 4 one of
the greatest live albums in the Grateful Dead catalog. The
biggest gem— some might say the crown jewel—of the entire set
is the now legendary rendition of “Dark Star,” a version so potent,
so telepathic that it formed the backbone of the recombinant
“Dark Star” on the Grayfolded album, but there really isn’t a weak
song on the album, and a rare live rendition of “Mason’s
Children” even gives this one a collector kick. When Bob Weir
says when he steps up to the mike at the beginning of disc one,
“This ain’t a show, it’s a party,” he ain’t kidding—if you’re not on
the bus yet, this one will save a seat for you.

That this 4-CD set kicks off with five tracks featuring blues
legend Bo Diddley (taken from a 3/25/72 benefit for the Hell’s
Angels) ought to be enough to get those Dead collector
synapses firing. That the last three discs present a complete
show from March 28, 1972 that’s very Europe ’72 in its set list
(with lots of early appearances of songs that ended up on that
album) but with that extra edge that playing in New York always
seemed to inspire in the band, all recorded by Dead sound whiz
Betty Cantor-Jackson, explains why this Dick’s Picks volume
met with almost universal acclaim upon its original release.
Double bonus: the Dead’s lone renditions of “How Sweet It Is
(to Be Loved by You)” and “Are You Lonely for Me!”

These superb live performances were broadcast from a
hometown gig in Hollywood and also in Berkeley, California in
late 1994 . Vocalist and songwriter, Courtney Love - influenced
by an unholy trinity of Big Black, Sonic Youth and Fleetwood Mac
- had formed the band five years earlier, in Los Angeles in 1989
with Eric Erlandson. Hole's first album, 'Pretty on the Inside' was
an extremely abrasive piece of work and was clearly influenced
both by local hard-core punk bands and by the East Coast 'No
Wave' scene. Not released until April of '94, Hole's sophomore
album, 'Live Through This' was a different matter entirely.
Released just four days after Cobain committed suicide, the
record was a massive commercial success. Hailed by 'Rolling
Stone' magazine as possibly "the most potent blast of female
insurgency ever committed to tape", it eventually went multiplatinum.

This remarkably charged live performance by Blondie comes
from an FM Radio broadcast and illustrates just what a dynamic
yet professional act they were a, full year before the world knew
their name. At the time seen as contemporaries it remains
fascinating to consider what was to come for this little known
combo as they played their very souls out on this late summer
evening almost 40 years ago.

With 15 charting albums to his credit during the ‘60s, one would
think John Gary would get a lot more recognition than he does
these days as one of the leading pop male vocalists of the
decade. He certainly was one of the most gifted; his tonal and
breath control were pretty much unmatched by his peers, and he
had an amazing 3 ½ octave range, often ascending from a meaty
baritone to a high, sweet tenor within a single song.
There remains one record, however, that has never really faded
from the public eye, and that is his 1964 Christmas album, which
went to #3 the year it came out and hit the Christmas charts for
four straight years after that. Finally, we at Real Gone Music are
bringing this holiday classic with its original album artwork to
compact disc, and we’re doing it with assistance from a very
special Christmas elf: John’s widow Lee Gary, who has
contributed liner notes and photos from the family archive for this
release! Arranged and conducted by the great Peter Matz of

The instrumental trio The Three Suns had been around for
about two decades, capturing fans as far-ranging as First Lady
Mamie Eisenhower and the Platters (who took their “Twilight
Time” to the top of the charts), when they cut this record for
RCA’s famed Living Stereo series in 1959.
And, no doubt inspired by the new-fangled recording
technology in RCA’s Studio A, they turned in one of the most
wacky and entertaining Christmas albums of the era, adding
rock and roll guitar and instrumentation as varied as chimes,
bells, oboes and two (!) tubas to create a Space Age
stereophonic spectacular suitable for the Jetsons’ next holiday
party. This record’s long been cherished by Christmas music

Surrounded by the music of the black church and the big bands
which played on the Ohio Riverboats, and with a father who
was a music educator at Oberlin College, he started playing
drums with the Boy Scouts and Bugle Corps, receiving a
scholarship to Wilberforce University where he joined the
Collegians, a band noted as a breeding ground for great jazz
musicians.
Russell's ideas were a crucial influence on the modal music of
John Coltrane and Miles Davis, notably on Davis' classic
recording, Kind of Blue, and served as a beacon for other
modernists such as Eric Dolphy and Art Farmer. While working
on the theory, Russell was also applying its principles to
composition. His first famous writing credit was for the Dizzy
Gillespie Orchestra on the two-part "Cubano Be, Cubano Bop"
(1947), and part of that band's pioneering experiments infusing
bebop and Cuban jazz elements. This 5 CD compilation
includes all George Russell's albums as leader, made between
1956, the year of his debut, and the point in 1963 when he and
his sextet relocated to Scandinavia and spent considerable
time touring Europe. The set also contains a true rarity in the
form of the complete recording of George Russell's Sextet
briefly reuniting to the US to play at the 1964 Newport Jazz
Festival.

The Soulful Strings were without a doubt the hippest project ever
to emerge from the ‘60s with the word “Strings” in its name.
Brainchild of producer/arranger/bassist/songwriter (and genius)
Richard Evans, the group was a far cry from the interchangeable
outfits that flourished during the “beautiful music” era; instead,
The Soulful Strings were actually composed of members of the
Chess/Cadet label house band, including flautist Lennie Druss,
guitarist Phil Upchurch, bassist/cellist Cleveland Eaton and
harpist Dorothy Ashby, who laid down a tasty electric groove into
which Evans stirred lush strings and unusual instrumentation like
the kalimba and sitar.
With production by Barry White, and seven of its nine songs
written or cowritten by the Walrus of Love, you’d think that this
one-off release from Jay Dee was in reality all but a solo album
from White. And you know what? You’d be right…almost. For
while Come On In Love sports the trademark lush orchestration
(with arrangements by Gene Page) and funky rhythms that
made Barry White a superstar during the ‘70s, the artist Jay
Dee was, if not an equal partner, a worthy front man. Born Earl
Nelson, he first surfaced in 1963 as half of Bob & Earl on the hit
“Harlem Shuffle” (which was arranged by—you guessed it—a
young Barry White)!
The result was a sound that resided at the crossroads of easy
listening, jazz, R&B and exotica—and, as one might expect from
that description, every Soulful Strings release (they made seven
albums) is treasured by cratediggers worldwide. This 1968
release was their highest-charting record at #35 on the charts,
and appears on CD for the first time anywhere in the world, with
liner notes by Gene Sculatti. The soundtrack to many a swingin’
‘60s Christmas party.
Then, as Jackie Lee he scored a huge novelty hit two years
later with “The Duck,” which again had Barry in the background
(the two co-composed the single’s flip, “Ooh Honey Baby”). So,
this 1977 album was actually a collaboration between two
seasoned pros, and it showed it with a number of slow-burning
jams spearheaded by excellent soulful vocals from
Jay/Earl/Jackie. Our Expanded Edition includes two bonus
tracks, both sides of the “Strange Funky Games and Things”
single featuring the single edit and a long instrumental version
under the name “Games and Funky Things,” with liner notes by
Gene Sculatti that explore the background behind this lost
classic of ‘70s soul. If you missed this one the first time around,
don’t miss it again!

Real Gone Music answers the pleas of power pop fans
worldwide with the first-ever CD release of this classic one-off
album from The Beckies, the group led by Michael Brown of Left
Banke, Montage, and Stories fame. Brown made a career out of
melding classical motifs with rock, but here— on what would turn
out to be the last project to which he made a significant
contribution—the focus is definitely more on the latter.
The Beckies fits right on the shelf with your Badfinger and
Raspberries records, full of catchy tunes that in another era
would have had a chance at significant radio play, but 1976 was
the height of the disco craze, and therefore it sunk without a
commercial trace. A quick search online, however—there are
about four solid pages of blog posts about the album— quickly
confirms cult classic status for The Beckies, here reissued with
notes by Jeremy Cargill and lyrics. Long overdue reissue and
worth the wait!

An homage to the drive-in movies of the 50's and 60's,
CHILLERAMA is a comedy-horror anthology comprised of four
vignettes from some of contemporary horror's biggest filmmakers,
among them I WAS A TEENAGE WEREBEAR, from writer/director
Tim Sullivan (2001 Maniacs, Driftwood). A funny, subversive spoof
of the Eisenhower/Kennedy-era beach movies, I WAS A TEENAGE
WEREBEAR follows a day in the life of closeted new kid Ricky
O'Reilly (played by Sean Paul Lockhart, aka adult film superstar
Brent Corrigan) who falls for Malibu High's mysterious bad boy
Talon (Anton Troy). When aroused, the two transform into bestial
leather daddies, the titular werebears. The film features five rock 'n
roll musical numbers, along with five other songs written
specifically for the soundtrack that spin the frothy boy/girl/beach
format into a humorously bloody, albeit well-intentioned, call for
acceptance and tolerance. In addition to the songs performed in
the film by Lockhart, Troy and company, Sullivan tapped a variety
of artists, including pop diva Briana Nadeau, whose "I'm Gonna
Make Him Mine" and "Undercover Lover" are a perfect blend of
Duffy meets Dusty Springfield. Two other songs featured in the film
are courtesy of the Vintons, Bobby and son Rob. "Truth be told,"
continued Sullivan, "before I became obsessed with KISS at age
13, I was quite infatuated with Bobby Vinton, our family being
Polish and my grandma playing his albums over and over. Never in
a million years would I have dreamed that Mr. Lonely himself would
be crooning a tune in one of my films." Robert Vinton appears both
on the soundtrack and in the film, performing "Sexy Ways".
Rounding out the soundtrack are Patrick Copeland's score in suite
form and a nice little bonus from shockabilly rockers Psycho
Charger, who conjured up the hard rocking title track, "Chillerama".

Monk started playing the piano at the age of six. Although largely
self-taught, he studied music theory, harmony, and arranging at
the Juilliard School of Music. However, he soon moved into jazz,
claimed his first residency as house pianist at Milton's
Playhouse, Manhattan, during the early to mid-1940s. Much of
Monk's style was developed during his time at Minton's, when he
participated in after-hours "cutting competitions" which featured
many leading jazz soloists of the time. The Minton's scene was
crucial in the formulation of bebop and it brought Monk into close
contact with other leading exponents of the emerging idiom. In
1944 Monk made his first studio recordings with the Coleman
Hawkins Quartet. Hawkins was one of the earliest established
jazz musicians to promote Monk, and Monk later returned the
favour by inviting Hawkins to join him on the 1957 session with
John Coltrane.
As the 1950s drew to a close, Monk's relationship with
Riverside was beginning to sour over disagreements
concerning royalty payments. He would not record another
studio album for Riverside after 5 by Monk by 5, and a
significant number of live albums followed, which showcased a
variety of legendary performances across the USA, France and
Italy. In 1962, Monk signed to Columbia Records. Working with
producer Teo Macero on his debut for the label, the sessions in
the first week of November had a stable line-up that had been
with him for two years, Monk's Dream, was released in 1963.
Columbia's resources allowed Monk to be promoted more
heavily than earlier in his career. The album would become the
best-selling LP of his lifetime, and on February 28, 1964, he
appeared on the cover of Time magazine, being featured in the
article "The Loneliest Monk".
Monk spent most of the early and mid-1950s composing,
recording, and performing at theatres and out-of-town gigs. After
his cycle of intermittent recording sessions for Blue Note during
1947-1952, he was under contract to Prestige Records for the
following two years. With Prestige he cut several highly
significant, but at the time under-recognized, albums, including
collaborations with saxophonist Sonny Rollins and drummers Art
Blakey and Max Roach.
He continued to record studio albums, including Criss Cross,
also from 1963, and Underground, from 1968. Monk had
disappeared from the scene by the mid-1970s, and made only
a small number of appearances during the final decade of his
life. His last studio recordings as a leader were made in
November 1971 for the English Black Lion label, near the end
of a worldwide tour with the Giants of Jazz, a group which
included Dizzy Gillespie, Kai Winding, Sonny Stitt, Al McKibbon
and Art Blakey.
