FROM THE MANAGER’S DESK
HAPPY HALLOWEEN! To all the Ghost and Goblins: Be careful and wear reflective
clothing. Do not eat your candy before you return home, have your parents inspect the
candy first. Remember, do not enter into a home without your parent. Stay safe and
have fun!
RV Storage Units and Murphy Drive Residents:
We will be posting signs on the RV Corrals: “No Trespassing, violators will be prosecuted.” As
concerned residents you can call 911 if you see or hear anything out of the ordinary.
Murphy Drive residents that do not have a fence behind them to Hunt's Park will receive a “No
Trespassing” sign as well. It will be installed by Morgan Services. Hopefully this will deter
Hunt's Park residents and children from coming onto your property and disturbing you.
Mail House Building by the Community Center:
We finally got all the glue off the siding of the mail house building. It looks really good and was
not a easy task. Please do not hang anything on the siding of this building going forward.
Trees:
Some trees in the Community have a disease that will spread to other trees. When the leaves
start to fall you must rake them up immediately and dispose of them. Do not allow them to sit
on the ground as this causes the ground around your tree to become contaminated. If you
have a fungus growing up the trunk of your tree(s) you can call your lawn care service or any
garden store for a safe solution to use.
Pond:
Regarding the reports of dead fish in the pond: The DEC said it happens every now and then.
The pond was not producing enough oxygen due to the hot summer. This issue was not
caused by any harmful chemicals.
Snow Birds (Winter Friends and Neighbors):
Reminder to let the Sales Office know when you are leaving, returning, where you will be, contact phone number, address, and emergency contact person.
We may already have it, but please confirm with us that we
have the correct information.
Please keep my e-mail address handy should you need to
reach me: [email protected].
If you need Sam, his e-mail address is
[email protected].
Very Truly Yours,
Debra DeMars
Community Manager

From the President’s Desk
~Autumn 2011~
Fall has officially arrived in Western New York….as we say farewell to the warmth of summer,
we are reminded that with that loss we gain the beauty and crispness of fall in our region. As
we usher out one season and welcome in another, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the
wonderful summer we had at Gypsum Mills. We kicked summer off with our Resident Picnic
in June, and followed that up with our very first Patriotic Parade and Ice Cream Social to mark
our country’s independence in July. In August our community garage and baked food sale,
along with our food concessions at the Community Center were a huge success! It was a busy
summer, jam packed with entertainment, friends and community fun. Thank you to all of you
in our community who helped to make that a reality!
Our Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre entourage filled the Community Center on September
10th. All of us were entertained and amused by the talented actors and actresses that hosted the
show. We are fortunate that we have a true sense of community here at Gypsum Mills. I applaud all of you who contribute your time and talent to the benefit of your neighbors. I know
that our community is richer because of your service. On that note, the Board and Morgan
Management have agreed that a special tribute is in order to honor all of you who graciously
donate your talents to our community all throughout the year. October 22nd will be our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Liz Temple and her committee are busy putting together a full evening of entertainment to honor all of the service our community volunteers so generously donate. Due to limited space, I urge you to get your tickets early. Additional details can be found
in this edition of The Scoop. I look forward to seeing you all October 22nd!
In addition to the beauty and richness of color that Autumn brings…..we can’t forget about
the spooky fun of Halloween in October! As so many joyful traditions do, Halloween has it’s
origins in a country near and dear to my heart….IRELAND! The celebration of Halloween started in Ireland around 100AD. Back then, Halloween was a pagan festival
celebrated by the Celts of Ireland who called it “Samhain”, (pronounced Sow-in) an
old Irish word meaning the 'end of Summer'. They believed that on the eve of Samhain
(Halloween), the dead spirits would revisit the mortal world, so huge bonfires were lit to keep
away any evil spirits. It is known in Gaelic as “Oíche Shamhna” (pronounced ee-heh how-nah) and is celebrated on the 31st
of October each year, which is All Souls Day, so in Ireland it is often referred to as the Feast of the Dead. As Irish immigrants fled
the potato famine and arrived in America, those bonfires were
downscaled and took the form of jack o’lanterns, which are known
today more commonly as pumpkins. Jack o’lanterns were still
thought to keep the evil spirits away with the presence of light.
Keeping with that theme, our annual Halloween Celebration is
scheduled for October 29th at our Community Center! Additional
details are found in this edition of The Scoop. Hope to see you
there for some wicked fun!
Fondly,
Hugh N. Crowley

Some of the dishes such as the French

conversation was quite amusing and the
group had a great sense of humor!
