NEWS
September 2014
Welcome to town, and welcome to the
Madison Newcomers Club!
I moved here with my family 2 years ago, and Newcomers has truly
been one of the best things about our new home! I have made so
many great new friends, learned about local resources and
charitable organizations, shopped at amazing local businesses that
have hosted and supported our monthly meetings, and become very

5, Sarah is 18 months) have met new friends through playdates,
Kids and Coffee, and family socials! After my daughter was born, so
many generous women in our Sunshine Committee brought us
meals so that my whole family was well nourished as we adjusted to
life as a family of four! There’s so much that Newcomers has to
offer – book club, outdoors club, a running group, Kids and Coffee,
family events, men’s pub night, men’s golf group, adults-only
events, civic volunteer opportunities and so much more!
Be sure to stay tuned for our monthly newsletters (emailed out at
the beginning of the month, September through June), and if you
haven’t yet, I encourage you to join our members-only Facebook
page (Madison CT Newcomers Club). The Facebook page is a great
source of information about local resources. Need help finding a
dentist, dry cleaner, or dog-walker? Just ask on Facebook and you’ll
be sure to get recommendations! The Facebook page is also where
many of our members keep in touch and make impromptu dates for
a walk, a meet-up at the farmers market, and more! And don’t
forget to save the date – we hold our monthly meetings on the
second Tuesday of the month, September-June at 7pm at a
different location around town each month.
Again, welcome to town, and welcome to Newcomers!! Please don’t
hesitate to reach out to any of our wonderful board members if you
have any questions or concerns as you get settled into this great
community. We all look forward to getting to know you!
Warmly,
Emily Rosenthal
President

Emily Rosenthal, President
Maya Bradstreet, 1st Vice President
When I moved here in July 2012 I had no idea
how quickly Madison would
feel just like home! I grew
up in Brooklyn, CT (the
northeast "Quiet Corner" of
the state), and lived all over
the place after college (LA,
Chicago, San Francisco, and
Boston). After all that
moving I was eager to get back home, and I
dragged my husband David (born and raised in
Miami!) along with me. We have two kids Caleb is 5 and starting kindergarten at Jeffrey
Elementary, and Sarah is 18 months. My
background is in public health and social
work, and I work part-time at Yale-New Haven
Hospital doing research and evaluation. Being
part of Newcomers has become the best thing
about living in Madison - I have made so many
wonderful friends, and I feel so connected to
this wonderful place we all call home!
I've just celebrated my 2nd year in Madison,
and couldn't be happier. Having lived all over
the country, my husband Bo and I can't
imagine another place that's
more welcoming and
comfortable than here. Most
recently, our family moved
from St. Louis, where our
nearly 6 year old daughter,
Loden was born. She is a first
grader at The Country School, and her little
brother Ellery, 4 years younger, is in daycare
a few days a week. We all love spending time
at East Wharf Beach, the Papermill Trail
behind our home, fruit picking at Scott's
Orchards, and at all the wonderful events that
Madison and the Shoreline have to offer
(honestly, way more than the city of St.
Louis!). Bo and his family are Connecticut
natives, and we're lucky to have in-laws
within a 5 mile radius. He works for an
executive search firm, and I'm re-starting my
nutrition and cooking business here that I
started back in the Mid-west. I'm excited to
meet and get to know better, all of you in the
coming months!
Amy Kennedy, 2nd Vice President
It has been just one year since my family
moved to Madison from Whitefish, Montana. I
am originally from southwestern Connecticut
but my husband Tom is from
out west. After having our
two boys (Will, now 5 and
Sam, now 2), we felt the
desire to live closer to
family again and chose this
beautiful town of Madison.
We're so glad we did! We love the beaches
and parks, as well as all of the fun community
events. I work for a global executive search
firm which keeps me busy but in my free
time, I enjoy being outdoors and spending
time with friends. We didn’t know a single
person in Madison when we moved here and
have been so thrilled with how welcoming
everyone has been. Newcomers has been a
big part of our happiness here, with so many
terrific people and fun activities all the time!
Helise Owens, 3rd Vice President
I moved to Madison in Oct 2011 with my
husband Mario and 3-year-old daughter,
Theodora. I'm originally
from the Washington DC
area and attended
Georgetown University
where I studied finance and
Chinese. Prior to moving to
Madison, I lived in Manhattan for 10 years
where I worked in finance (Lehman Brothers,
Coach) and Training & Development (J.P.
Morgan Chase). This is my 3rd year on the
Newcomers board and I'm also on the board of
Madison A Better Chance. For fun, I love
cooking, yoga, and Crossfit.

I grew up in Rochester, New York and then
attended Bowdoin College in Maine. After that
I moved to Boston for a few years. In 2001 I
continued on down the coast
to Philadelphia where I
attended the University of
Pennsylvania for my Masters in
Landscape Architecture. I met
my husband Brendan in 2004,
and lived in NYC for nine
years. While there I worked for the Central
Park Conservancy primarily designing
playgrounds. In 2012 our twin boys, Sam and
Everett were born. Realizing we were quickly
outgrowing our Brooklyn apartment we were
on the lookout for a new place to raise our
family. My mom sent us to Madison for our
first weekend away from the babies (they
were 10 months old at the time.) Despite
never hearing of Madison before, over that
weekend we found our house and my husband
convinced his job to transfer him to a sales
territory up here. It was love at first sight.
We have been in Madison since August 2013.
Madison Newcomers has introduced me to so
many great people, and I am so glad to be a
part of such a great group of women.
I moved back to my hometown of Madison
three years ago. I left Madison after high
school to attend Trinity
College in Hartford, CT and
then spent 10 years in the
Boston area for school (MBA)
and work. Once my husband
and I had our first child, we
decided that we wanted to
be closer to family and Madison was the
perfect place. We were also attracted to the
sense of community, small town charm,
reputable schools and, of course, the beach.
Since moving back, I left my job in the
medical device industry and had 2 more kids.
I love raising my children (Connor, 6; Ryan, 3
in November; Caroline, 9 months) in the same
town where I grew up and created so many
memories – now, they are creating memories
of their own! My mother is also a Newcomers
alum from the 70’s/80’s – she is the one who
urged me to join! The Newcomers Club has
allowed me to further explore all that our
great town has to offer as well as meet so
many great women. I am looking forward to
an exciting 2014-15 year!
Debbie Crocker, Historian
My move to Madison in January 2013 was part
of a whirlwind three years that included
finishing my MBA, meeting and eventually
marrying my husband,
moving three times,
starting a new job, having
our first child, and buying a
home. Madison was our
chosen town given my
husband’s desire to start a
brewery on the shoreline and his family ties to
the town. I’m a native of the New Hampshire
seacoast and spent my adult life in and
around Boston. I currently work at Smilow
Cancer Hospital in New Haven. Being part of
Newcomers has turned Madison into HOME for
Christian, Charlie (2) and I. I’m excited to be
able to give back as a member of the Board
again this year.
I moved back to Madison from Killingworth
about two years ago in 2011. I also lived in
California with my husband
Jim for seven years and
Hebron, CT for five years. Jim
and I have a 15-year-old
daughter, Isabella, and a 12year-old son, Alex. I grew up
in Madison originally and have lots of family
here! For fun, I love exercising (bodyjam),
reading, hiking, dinner parties with friends
and Mah Jongg! I also work as a psychologist
in New London. I am happy to participate in
Newcomers because of the warm welcoming
atmosphere, the great array of activities it
offers, and the community support.

I moved to Madison in October 2012 with my
husband, Anthony Dias, and our son, Max, was
born shortly afterwards in
December. We are from the
Boston area and are thrilled to
be back on the east coast after
a 3 year stint in Chicago. My
background is in finance, but I
also earned a degree as a pastry
chef while I was in Chicago. My husband
works in the healthcare field. As a family, we
enjoy travel, cooking, hiking, gardening and
outdoor time at the Surf Club!
We moved to Madison during the summer of
2011. I was born in Vancouver, BC, raised in
Stamford, CT, spent time in
Massachusetts for college and
Oregon for graduate school,
and then settled in beautiful
Madison, CT to raise my
family with my husband Elliot
Kaiman. We have two boys,
Malcolm (3.5 years) and Otto (2 years).
Madison Newcomers Club has been a
wonderful way for our family to make great
friends and explore all the wonderful things
the shoreline has to offer. I love cooking,
walking, the beach, reading, music, my
husband’s home brew and homemade wine,
and spending time with family and friends.
When I’m not spending time with my kiddos, I
work as a clinical psychologist. I am looking
forward to another terrific year with
Newcomers!
Eileen Moulin, Civics
I moved to Madison 3
years ago from Newtown,
Pennsylvania though I'm
originally from Michigan.
Thanks to the Newcomers
Club, I have really come
to love living here! I am
a Civics Co-Chair this year. I am married to
Frederic and we have two daughters, Chloe,
16, and Evie, 12. You will meet my dog,
Gwenabwy, when you join the Newcomers
Club Outdoor activities! She loves hiking and
kayaking almost as much as I do!! I also teach
English as a Second Language at the
elementary school in Clinton.
Kelly Hurley, Treasurer
I grew up in Madison and moved to the North
Shore of Massachusetts after college. A few
years ago I returned home to
raise a family with my
husband, Joe. We have two
girls, Maeve (4) and Deirdre
(2). In my free time, I enjoy
sewing, baking, photography
and Crossfit.
Heather Cartier, Ways & Means
It has been almost two years that we've been
in Madison, as we moved here in December
2012 from Westbrook. Before
Westbrook, I was living in
Brooklyn, New York for many
years. Leaving the city wasn't
easy, but finding Madison was
wonderful. My husband Geoff
and I welcomed our son
Colson into the world in April 2013. We added
a springer spaniel puppy named Chapter to
our family in July 2014! When not chasing our
son or the puppy around, I enjoy the beach,
running, walking the many trails in Madison or
reading. I also work full time as a pediatric
occupational therapist.
