President’s
Report
New members
Firstly, a big welcome to all our new members including this month’s feature artist Odel
Golomb from Israel. For those of you who will visit the New Zealand ALL GLASS exhibition Workshops
venue in Auckland during the Rugby World Cup, Odel will be contributing some of her
sculptural works, which you may even choose to collect. We hope to meet Odel in New Pah Homestead
Zealand, some of you may even wish to welcome her to your studio.
Also featuring as a new column in our newsletter, dedicated to the bead makers, Isla
Osborne has volunteered to contribute by writing the column by inclusion from our editor
Jo Tricker. NZSAG wishes to continue supporting initiatives that were previously run under
NZGBA, particularly given we have volunteer assistance working towards non profit causes
raising awareness, funds and/or in kind assistance for organisations such as the Cancer
Society. We welcome initiatives from former NZGBA members and encourage others who
have not yet had the possibility to be involved in these events to take a moment to read
Isla’s column.

In the coming weeks ahead, we also look forward to hearing the announcement of the Art Awards &
winner to the prestigious glass award Ranamok this August. This award is open to both
Exhibitions
Australian and New Zealand glass artist’s, offering AU$15,000 to the award recipient, the
work becoming an acquisition within the Ranamok collection. It is pleasing to see that a Axia Modern Art
number of entries from New Zealand have made the final cut for Ranamok once again.
They are: Lee Brogan, Christine Cathie, Sue Hawker, Jenny Judge, Kim Logue, Di Tocker All Glass
and Keryn Whitney! 32 finalists have been juried into this year’s event, including some

very high profile established artists making for a rigorous selection process. We await to
hear the official announcement on 17th August 2011. Best wishes to all of you who made
the final selection, and even if you don’t win, the journey and advertising from a years worth of touring will
have been worth it. You can view the finalists for Ranamok 2011 online at: www.ranamok.com/final2011.htm.
An update on the NZSAG exhibition event this September in Auckland, ALL GLASS. In keeping with the
rugby spirit, we are going to kick start with a special opening section of black glass. So far over 20 artists
will be participating, myself included. The venue is located on Kingsland’s busiest main street and is within
walking distance of the main train station closest to Eden Park. Any last minute subscribers to this event are
urged to contact the society to express interest in participating. The construction of gallery walls are already
in the design stage.
I have received only 1 CD containing images so far from one artist wishing to have their work featured on
promotional material for this exhibition. We have a very limited time remaining to co-ordinate publicity material
for this event, so would encourage you to send a CD today if you wish to be featured.
You can post high resolution images on CD, forwarded c/o Auckland Exhibition to 28 Nixon Street, Whanganui
East, Whanganui 4500. Details of the Terms & Conditions including the delivery instructions for this event are
included in this newsletter. Please read them carefully.

To
clarify
from
my
last President’s
report, some people
have asked if they may enter
only one representative work,
rather than stock work. It is absolutely
fine to do this, though strongly urge that they
are signature works typical of those found on your
profile on the NZSAG website to back sales. It
will be a rotational exhibition, so clients will be
able to take works with them as they purchase.
Our aim is not only to sell your work, though to
raise funds for our conference next year, after of
course paying for the overheads of running the
event itself.
As a final reminder to those of you who have not
yet renewed your membership, it will now be up
to you to actively re-subscribe to the Society in
the future as no further reminders will be issued.
This newsletter aims to keep members informed
of upcoming events and opportunities will now
continue to be delivered only to current members.
Many thanks to those of you who continue to
support the national organisation.
I look forward to seeing those of you who will
arrive at the event in Auckland.
Until next month…

From
New Zealand
to Murano!
Glass Casting and Fusing Workshop at the Abate Zanetti
School April 2011
We arrived on Murano on the first of April on a warm spring
evening. We checked in at
the Al Soffiador Hotel and
got a good night’s sleep.
The next day we met
Elena Rosso in her studio
at Navaggero.
Elena is a wonderful
glass artist who teaches
lampwork and assists maestri at the Zanetti School. She
arranged visits for us to many artisan’s studios including
Venini Cenedese and Barbini. She was our fusing teacher
and keen to learn casting techniques.
That evening we hopped on a 42 vaporetto into Venice.
It was wonderful to be back following my dream. Only ten
months later and here we are!
Brett and I spent the week at the
Zanetti School setting up the wax
and plaster rooms and trialling the
fusing kiln with some small open
casts. Gaffer had sent some casting
crystal, billets and blowing rods from
their Portsmouth, England supplier.
On the following Saturday Evelyn
Dunstan arrived and on the Sunday
night we met John Leggot and Alison
Mortiss for a welcome dinner with
the Zanetti staff in Venice. Alison is
a stained glass and fusing artist with 20 years experience,
from Australia. John makes glass at Gaffer and has a
background in ceramics. Evelyn has had a successful
casting career since 2003 and Brett is a working
designer also studying architecture at University of
Auckland.
3
We started the workshop with a show of work by
New Zealand glass artists. The staff asked if I could
repeat the slide show in a week for the local glass
artists.
After a couple of days exploring possibilities with
sticky wax, we arranged to have the large ceramic
kiln reprogrammed for glass and by Thursday had
it filled with
molds.
We
used the R &
R GC910 as
our first layers
and plaster
and fine silica
sand as the
outer layer.
This was not
entirely successful as some of the larger molds split,
leaking glass into the kiln. We had about a 75%
success rate, so not too bad for the first time. Elena
cast some Effetre glass flowers using Evelyn’s
mold, which she then encased in glass in the
hotshop. We did
a few experiments
like casting gaffer
uranium blowing
rod with murrines
made from gaffer
cane. The glass
on Murano has
a CoE of 104
unlike the 96-92
of Gaffer Glass. We used Effetre murrines for the
fusing class that Elena taught to great effect.
We generated a lot of interest at the presentation
with 50+ people coming to see the work and slide
show. Glass to the Muranese is a living thing
created with fire and breath so the idea of leaving it
unattended in a kiln for days is unimaginable.

Their main concern is commercial; can you make a
living from this method of glass working?
We had a lot of fun and very full days. We had
good access to the school and some great shared
lunches. The nights on Murano are very quiet but
there are a few good restaurants: Ai Vetrai and
Restaurant B were our favourites. Otherwise it is
only a short boat trip into Venice and they run all
night. We did a lot of walking, saw a lot of churches,
architecture, bridges, boats and bars. Vino Rosso,
Spritz, Limoncello Grappa and so much yummy
seafood! We were treated like locals after a few
days on the island.
Only by spending time there can you get a feel for
the strong glass community and how it is driven
by men in their 70s who have been in front of a
furnace for 50-60 years! It is a team and a family;
or many rivalling families.
recommend if you do a workshop at the Zanetti
School is to book your own accommodation.
There are two hotels and three
B&B’s. The Melangrano was
great- clean and friendly. It
is an easy walk to the school
from anywhere on the island.
Lino
Tagliapetra
had
a
spectacular retrospective in
Venice. John introduced him
to me on my last morning there
and I felt very honoured to
shake the hand of one of the world’s greatest glass
masters.
It was an amazing
experience to teach a
workshop and to stay
on Murano. Next time
it would be good to run
the workshop for longer,
with an evening session
so the people of Murano
could participate..
It is harder to find younger people willing to take up
the tradition and many hotshops have closed. Pino
Signoretti was recovering from a leg amputation
but still working.
The price of fuel and transport makes it increasingly
cost-prohibitive. The hours are long, hot and
labour intensive and the market is undercut by the
Chinese and Indian makers blowing Italian designs
at a third of the cost.
Murano is changing: most mornings a barge would
arrive in the main lagoon with two concrete trucks
on board, pumping cement
into a new hotel site at The
Conterie, an old seedbead
making factory. More
Hotels will be finished by
2013 bringing more people
to the island for longer with
the idea that they might
stay on Murano and day
trip into Venice.
One
thing
I
I would like to thank Guido Ferro the director of the
Zanetti School and Gaffer Glass for their wonderful
support. I look forward to our next workshop on
Murano.

Odel Golomb
from Israel
First of all, I would like to thank you for giving
me the opportunity of becoming a member of
the NZSAG Organization. In Israel, there is no
particular organization which unites all the glass
artists and/or the artists in general. This is due
to the fact that unfortunately, our country is mostly
struggling to defend itself from war attacks and
for survival. Moreover, there is only one famous
gallery for glass.
5
It is important to stress that a lot of courage is
required in order to engage in a field of activities
with expensive raw materials and with almost no
demand.
Everything started about 6 years ago when a
strong desire arouse in me to create and work with
light. I looked for the right medium and then I
discovered glass and I knew that I had found what
I had always wanted to find.
I took a short course in fusing and then purchased
the necessary equipment. I then became the
assistant of sculpture and plaster artists in order to
produce glass moulds.
In 2007, I met someone who became my studio
partner. He taught me to design glass in Japanese
N
o
.
style and I taught him fusing. A short time before
my first exhibition, we separated and everyone
went into his/her own new direction.
I started to produce floor chandeliers and I intend
to exhibit them for the first time in September 2011
in New Zealand.
I have always felt strongly attracted by New Zealand… As a little girl, I remember that I dreamt
about the limpid lakes over there !
In March 2011, I took the initiative to find out about
glass activities in New Zealand and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this field is very
well developed there. I did not hesitate and I immediately registered as a member in the NZSAG
Organization. I plan to visit New Zealand for the
first time in September 2011 and I look forward to
meeting the glass artists and the limpid lakes !

BeadNz
I would like to welcome any new members
from the flameworking community and
introduce the first monthly column of
‘BeadNZ’ - written by Isla Osborne.
These next few months will be a difficult
time for the bead-making community in
New Zealand. With the closure of Annie
Rose and the dissolution of the NZGBA,
we have to begin to work at new ways
to continue to thrive and avoid isolation.
Hopefully this new column in the monthly
NZSAG newsletter will help keep our
community alive.
Bead Week at Born to Bead
Along with organizing the Glass Bead
Competition earlier this month, LisaJane also hosted the annual Bead
Week. Emily and Karilea shared their
secrets in one-day workshops and
Anastasia taught a three-day course
focusing on the use of hair-thin stringers
and enamels.

Beads of Courage
I would like to thank everyone for being
so generous with their donations to the
Beads of Courage programme. In June
we donated a total of 389 beads and are
close to hitting our 415-bead monthly
target for July.
The following artists came on board over
the last month: Claire Taylor, Emily Lake,
Carol Croucher, Isla Osborne, John
and Frances Hanson, Lesley McIver,
Robyn Shaw, Karen Mitchell, Liz BarnsGraham, Anna Palmer, Helen Moore,
Laurie Carroll, Kari Lindsay-Beale, Ray

Ray Ansin also donated
some of his beautiful butterfly
murrini beads to the program.
For those who aren’t aware, Beads of Courage
is a treatment program administered in New
Zealand by the Child Cancer Foundation. Children
in the program are given a specific coloured bead
for every treatment they undergo. I organise the
donation of unique lampworked ‘milestone’ beads,
which mark significant events within each child’s
journey with Cancer. The program has recently
been rolled out nationwide, and we need to find
75 glass artists willing to donate 75 handmade
beads each year. If you are interested in being a
partner in this amazing program, contact me (Isla)
at [email protected] and let me know. If
you don’t regularly make beads, but have a few
lying around the studio that you want to donate,
just send them to me and I will make sure they
reach their destination.

New Glass
Review 33
Each year, The Corning
Museum of Glass conducts
a worldwide competition to
select 100 images of new
works in glass. A committee
drawn
from
designers,
artists, curators, and critics
makes the selection. The
publication is intended to
keep its audience, which
includes museums, artists,
libraries, collectors, scholars, and dealers,
informed of recent developments in the field.
Objects considered excellent from any of several
viewpoints—such as function, subject matter,
aesthetics, and technique—will be chosen. The
objects selected will be published in color with the
names of the makers and brief descriptions of the
pieces.
New Zealand Society
of Artists in Glass
Participants are requested to complete the entry
form, submitting a total of three digital images
illustrating one work per image. Slides and
transparencies will not be accepted. Three images of
different pieces are preferred, although participants
may send multiple views of one or two pieces.
Digital photographs, which should be made using
the highest-resolution setting on the camera, must

Axia
Modern Art
“It is disheartening news to have received that
Axia Modern Art in Melbourne has gone into
receivership after 40 years of service to the arts.
Representing both Australian and New Zealand
artists over the years, we have a number of
members who have been and continue to be
directly affected by this announcement.
9
I have managed to make contact with Axia, since
Wednesday and have been advised that Axia
are no longer in a position to pay for the return of
works unsold from Australia.
Any NZSAG member who still has work at AXIA is
strongly advised to arrange collection of this work
as soon as possible.
If you are personally not able to collect it, you will
need to authorise someone to collect it on your
behalf. I would suggest giving your representative
a formal letter stating you give them permission to
act on your behalf which also states what they will
be collecting. Images are also useful. Someone
trust worthy is also highly recommended.
Axia’s doors will close in September, if you do
not make arrangements before then, it may be
too late. An insurance claim might be very difficult
case.”

ALL GLASS Invitation You are invited to participate in the biennial fundraising exhibition ALL GLASS to be held at 420D
New North Rd in Kingsland, Auckland. NZSAG has rented part of a showroom which will become
our gallery with exhibition dates from Friday 30 September to Monday 24 October 2011. The
location is very close to Eden Park and the dates coincide with all of the Auckland Rugby World Cup
games and finals, so Kingsland will be buzzing. We expect there will be high numbers of tourists,
and would equally love your smaller ‘take home in the luggage’ size pieces along with larger works.
There will be an opening event on Friday evening 30 September titled:
ALL GLASS ..... dress code black.
We are inviting works in black glass specifically for this event, but want up to 10 works in all colours
for general exhibition. More news on the opening will come in the Glass Newsletter.
Please see the Terms and Conditions of the exhibition below, and sign the completed registration
form to acknowledge that you have read and understood.
