Dementia Symptoms and Treatment Options

Gideon Abrahamm III
Presented by Seniors Helping Seniors
Dementia is not a single disease, but instead a group of diseases or,
in some cases, injury, that can cause a change in a person’s intellect,
thinking skills, such as memory or language, personality or social
behavior. People will often equate dementia with Alzheimer’s Disease,
but Alzheimer’s is just one type of dementia. The onset and course of dementia is dependent upon the type of disease causing the symptoms. Some dementias are progressive
and primarily managed by changes to the environment; others can be medically treated and reversed

Ballots will be mailed Monday, May 16, 2014 to Class I, Class II Members in good standing as of March 31, 2014, with a return deadline to Poway
Senior Center of (minimum of 20 days after mailing) 4 p.m., Friday, June 13, 2014.
The ballots will be certified and counted, and results posted at PSC by Friday, June 27, 2014 and announced in the July 2014 newsletter.
Any questions, please contact Leslie Hoffman, Executive Director at PSC. (858) 748-6094 x 301.
Sharon Peterson - PVSCC Board Member
has been a resident of Poway since 1993. She has been married to her
husband, Bruce for 30years and has two daughters, Sarah and Rachel.
Sharon is passionate about physical fitness and also enjoys cooking,
reading, adventure travel and wine tasting.
Sharon began her career in financial planning in 1982. She earned her
Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) designation in October of 1988
followed by her Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation in October 1991. LPL Financial was chosen as her broker/dealer in 1998 and
along with her partner, Marcus Hennen, also a resident of Poway,
formed SharMarc Financial Advisors, Inc., fee based Registered Investment Advisory firm located on Pomerado Road in Poway.
Sharon has been a member of the Poway chapter of National Charity
League since 1994 where she was a board member for two of those
years. As a result of her involvement with NCL she was introduced to
the Poway Senior Center where she was the liaison for the Home Delivered Meals program for two years. Sharon has formed relationships
with the recipients of meals and continues to deliver meals frequently.
She has also volunteered for many other senior center activities and is
a strong supporter of their many services. Sharon looks forward to
the opportunity to serve the community of Poway through her involvement with Poway Senior Center.
Nina Lococo - PVSCC Board Member
Nina has lived in the City of Poway for 20 years. She is a licensed and
practicing California Attorney. Nina has served as an appointed member of the Poway Senior Center Board of Directors for the past year,
however her experience with the Senior Center dates back nearly nine
years during her involvement with the Poway Chapter of the National
Charity League, where during that time she served on the Board of
Directors for three years, and as President for one year.
Edward S. Oliva - PVSCC Board Member
I am currently serving on the Board of Directors and would appreciate
your vote to continue to serve on the board. I have lived in Poway since
1986 and retired in 2004 after 28 years in municipal government. As
such, I believe I can contribute my management experience, budget expertise, personal relations, and knowledge of departmental operations
and responsibilities. I have also served on several non-profit organizations. I have also volunteered with Poway youth sports programs. Thank
you for your consideration of my application to serve once again on the
Board of Directors.
Cynthia Elizondo - PVSCC Board Member
I am delighted to be a candidate to serve on the Board of Directors for
the Poway Valley Senior Citizens Corporation. My family and I moved to
Poway in 2000 from Northern California, and during the 14 years since
we arrived, I have been involved in several not-for-profit organizations,
including sitting on the board for National Charity League (a supporter of
the Home-Delivered Meals Programs), Soroptimist International of Poway, and various school-related programs through the Poway Unified
School District, such as PTA and Music boosters. I am also an active
member of
St. Gabriel Catholic Church, where my husband, Ricardo,
serves as a deacon, and I even worked for the parish for two years, as
the Director of Stewardship and Development. I am an entrepreneur and
have owned several small businesses throughout my career, so I know
how to prepare, read and evaluate a budget, as well as set goals and
work to achieve them. I’m excited to learn more about and become more
active in the Poway Senior Center.
Toni Kraft - PVSCC Board Member
Good day- I am humbled by being asked to sit on the BOD for the PVSC for
another term. My small Café in Poway sits in the heart of the City in the
Country, and along with my husband we want to serve our community . I
am past president of the RBBA, PUSD Foundation, and Poway Chamber of
Commerce CEO. I currently sit on the BOD for the PCPA, and the Green
Committee our Health and Wellness company Lifestyles InFOCUS.

Enjoy an afternoon or evening of excitement and fun at Poway Senior Center! Every Tuesday afternoon
and Saturday Evening, Poway Senior Center hosts Bingo, and the proceeds benefit PSC programs and
activities. Each year, these games produce approximately 50% of the revenues for our operating
budget, which makes it a very important program. Bingo is volunteer managed and we welcome NEW
Bingo volunteers to assist in counting and distributing tickets, behind-the-scenes operations. Volunteers
are asked to commit to a monthly schedule. No prior experience is necessary, but job skills help, and a
Sheriff’s back ground check is required, and you must be over 18 to participate.
Applications are available from Managers during Bingo, Tuesdays and Saturdays,
