OF KLAGENFURT AND RELAX
AT THE LAKE WITH GROUPS
The provincial capital, Klagenfurt,
located in the heart of Carinthia, is
an inspiration with its history, culture and liveliness, major events and
numerous sights.
One of them, for example, is the
historic Old Town with its Italian
palaces and cultural treasures such
as the Coat of Arms Hall, the Carinthian Museum of Modern Art and the
Klagenfurt City Theatre or the romantic
Lendkanal, a waterway which connects
the city centre with the eastern bay of
Lake Wörthersee. Here you can enjoy
2
the countryside and relax after a stroll
through the city. The many cultural and
natural sightseeing possibilities are
rounded off by attractive excursions
in the municipalities of Maria Saal,
Poggersdorf, Grafenstein and Ebenthal, which are part of the tourism
region.
We can introduce you to specialist
destinations, programmes, accommodation and restaurants for groups

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE TOURISM
REGION OF KLAGENFURT AM WÖRTHERSEE
Diversity unites
The Lindwurm – the
emblem of the city of Klagenfurt.
Klagenfurt,
the city at Lake Wörthersee
On walks through the Old Town, discover the palaces constructed by Italian
master builders, visit Klagenfurt’s City
Theatre and marvel at the treasures
in the Coat of Arms Hall or local art
in the Carinthian Museum of Modern
Art. Find the best in shopping in the
attractive pedestrian zone, and regional delicacies at the Benediktinermarkt
marketplace. In only a few minutes you
can be at the idyllic eastern bay of Lake
Wörthersee, where further attractions
such as Minimundus, a reptile zoo
4
or a boat trip on the lake will provide
some memorable moments. Kreuzbergl, Europapark and the Lendkanal
waterway offer relaxation in natural
surroundings. City and lake. Action
and relaxation. Events and culture.
That and a lot more makes Klagenfurt
am Wörthersee stand out.
Taking a stroll across the main
square. Following history in the Roman
amphitheatre, Virunum, or in the openair museum. Visiting castles or the
Herzogstuhl (Duke’s Throne). Meeting
artists in the Tonhof. All of this can be
enjoyed in the municipality of Maria
Saal.
Maria Saal, a place of pilgrimage
In Maria Saal you will stroll across
the historical ground of the Zollfeld
and feel the energy of the impressive
pilgrimage and collegiate church.
Poggersdorf, historical diversity
Poggersdorf is a diverse municipality:
those interested in history and technology can find out more about the
beginnings of electricity generation in
the technical museum, Gurk-Kraftwerk
Rain. Fields and meadows are perfect
for taking a stroll. Visitors can completely relax at the Pagoda of the Light
of Dhamma, where they can learn the
art of meditation.
Grafenstein,
the gourmet municipality
Unspoilt nature. Rural character. And,
right in the middle, a delightful inn
where you can enjoy some refreshments before you go on a castle tour
or follow in the tracks of architect Clemens Holzmeister. Remember to take
a group photo in front of the romantic
parish church. Jump into the saddle
and discover the wetlands along the
Gurk or Drau rivers. There are many
ways to enjoy yourself in Grafenstein.
Ebenthal, for nature lovers
Pure nature: relaxation by the rivers
and in the forests. That’s Ebenthal.
Cycle through unspoilt countryside.
Or visit the castle park and then stop
off for something to eat. Then head
off to Maria Hilf parish church with its
artistic frescoes, and the parish church
of Saint Martin.

The tourism region of Klagenfurt am
Wörthersee lies in the heart of Carinthia.
Anyone coming here to relax will experience pure culture in the city and nature
directly on their doorstep: while visiting
museums or swimming in Lake Wörthersee
with its drinking water quality – in Klagenfurt
am Wörthersee there are just a few steps
between the vibrant city and the peaceful
green of the forests or the deep turquoise
of the lake.
The municipality of Maria Saal, with over
3,900 inhabitants, is a place of pilgrimage
with historical significance, where history
comes alive in the open-air museum, in the
amphitheatre Virunum or at the Herzogstuhl
(Duke’s Throne).
In Poggersdorf, with its more than 3,200
inhabitants, you can explore natural treasures as well as impressive churches and
a Far Eastern pagoda.
Also to the east of the provincial capital, you
will find the municipality of Grafenstein
with over 3,700 inhabitants. With its rural
character, Grafenstein offers peace and
recreation in the countryside.
To the south, the municipality of Ebenthal
with its rural beauty lies at the edge of the
city. Over 7,600 people live here and they
appreciate the unique flora and fauna in
the Höfleiner Moor nature reserve just as
much as visitors do.

Culture
and nature
IN THE CITY AND
AT THE LAKE
The view from the
Stadtpfarrturm tower is spectacular.
Klagenfurt’s Stadttheater is the Art Nouveau jewel of the city.
In the 800 year old centre of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee you can stroll with your group through the inner
courtyards of the palaces. One historic highlight
follows the next, as the Italian master builders
built the city. Especially eye-catching is Klagenfurt’s
Stadttheater (city theatre), an Art Nouveau jewel,
whose new productions always delight theatregoers.
The city is not only ideal for culture lovers, but also
offers numerous opportunities for shopping – everything from farmers’ markets to designer boutiques
and modern shopping centres. The attractive pedestrian zone makes window shopping a real pleasure.
What could be more refreshing than dipping your
toes into Lake Wörthersee after a walk through the
city? The eastern bay is only a few minutes’ drive
away from the centre and offers many attractions
such as Minimundus, a reptile zoo, Europapark or
boat trips on the lake.
Come with your group and experience the tourism
region of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee with its fascinating culture and nature.

The Carinthian Herzogstuhl (Duke’s Throne) once played an important role
in the appointment of rulers in the duchy of Carinthia and was probably
placed on the Zollfeld in the second half of the 9th century. On the occasion

in a document as “sedes Karinthani ducatus”.
A grave stone from the Roman Virunum was used to make it. The Duke’s
Throne is a two-seater. The western side was for Count Palatine of Gorizia,
the eastern side for the Duke of Carinthia.
The ceremony of the appointment of the Duke was carried out in three
parts: the appointment at the Fürstenstein (Prince’s Stone) in Karnburg, the
consecration in Maria Saal Cathedral and the homage and feud provision at
the Herzogstuhl on the Zollfeld. In 1834, a lance lattice was placed around
it. The Herzogstuhl is known as one of the most important symbols of the
independence and history of the province.
The Fürstenstein (Prince’s Stone) is the oldest legal monument in Carinthia
and is made out of an upside down base piece of a Roman-Ionic column
from Virunum, the capital of the Roman province of Noricum. In the Middle
Ages, the Carinthian coat of arms was chiselled into it. After its long history
it can now be viewed in the Coat of Arms Hall in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.
The history of the Tonhof is connected to the artist couple Maja and
Gerhard Lampersberg, who came
into possession of the building in
1954.
Thomas Bernhard, Christine Lavant
and H. C. Artmann are mentioned as
representatives for many Austrian
post-war artists who were guests
of the Lampersbergs from the mid
1950s.
These days, the Tonhof cultural
association primarily tries to establish the Tonhof as a cultural meeting
place.

The provost church, an honorary title given by the Pope for a main church of
a town or region, is also an important place of pilgrimage and was erected
in the 15th century in late Gothic style. There are two towers capped by
characteristic onion-shaped domes. The Cathedral stands on the remains
of the church erected by Choir Bishop Modestus around 753. Maria Saal is
therefore one of the oldest locations of a Christian church and, at the same
time, the starting point of the missionary work in Carinthia in Carolingian times.
Until 945 AD, the church in Maria Saal was used as an original parish seat by
the Diocese of Salzburg and as the centre of the conversion to Christianity
in Carinthia. After 945, the region was under Salzburg’s administration, and
Maria Saal remained the religious centre of the province.

History
AND FOLKLORE
A journey into the past can be something exciting. Especially in the
tourism region of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.
Art lovers will get their money’s worth in the Carinthian Museum of Modern
Art, in the baroque Coat of Arms Hall or in the colourful Fuchs Chapel.
Poetic adventures take place in the Musil Museum. You can even visit a
mine in the middle of town in the Mining Museum and then stroll through
the Botanical Gardens, admiring the splendour of the flowers and plants.
In the Eboard Museum and Koschat Museum it’s all about music. The
electricity has been provided for a long time by the Gurk-Kraftwerk Rain
power plant, the history of which will get even non-technicians buzzing. The
Roman town of Virunum is a lot older; here you can walk in the tracks of
gladiators. Right next door you will find the Carinthian Open-air Museum,
which offers an insight into the customs and traditions of the country.
Get to know about the culture and history of Carinthia with your group
– this modern and interesting museum is an excellent place to start.

There are many reasons why the Fuchs Chapel has gained importance
outside of the region as a complete work of art: for most visitors it is, without
doubt, the fantastic colours, the numerous details and the interesting
story behind each picture.
The central theme chosen by the painter, Professor Ernst Fuchs, for the
chapel is the Apocalypse. He depicts it in powerful, large scenes which
draw in the observer. With the help of glaze painting, Fuchs achieved a
particular depth in his work. The geometry, ornamentation and colourfulness
of the oil paintings impress every visitor. There is always something new
to discover.
A painted life’s work: as a painter, Fuchs is one of the most important
representatives of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism, an artistic
direction of the 20th century. The artist worked for free for twenty years
on the “Winter Chapel” in the town parish church of St. Egid until he was
