All Indians are my brothers and sisters.
This is a story about Unity and Honesty. Ram Prasad Bismil was a Freedom fighter who was
in jail when fighting for our freedom. He badly wanted to get out of jail. One day he saw the jail
gates wide open. He wanted to escape. He ran out, but stopped when he saw an Indian soldier
sleeping at the gate.
Trick and Tame
Brain Teasers
He knew that the soldier will be in trouble if he escaped. So he went back to prison. This story
tells us that we should make good choices even in difficult times. His noble thoughts and
honesty make us remember him even now!

My Visit to Kennedy Space C entre :
It was an awesome experience and I was so impressed that I watched its home coming
live on T.V. when I came back to India. Now, I have a telescope at home and have viewed
planets like Jupiter and Saturn and wish to make a space shuttle or rocket one day as I
have developed interest in STARS, PLANETS and SPACE.
Answers :
After sometime the countdown started and everyone was excited and eagerly waiting
for the launch. Suddenly, there was a loud noise as the shuttle lifted off in the sky. Everyone
started cheering and clapping. There was a bright golden yellow flame coming out from
the engines. It was a beautiful sight. Soon the two rocket boosters separated from the
shuttle and fell into the Atlantic Ocean. We all bid goodbye to ‘DISCOVERY’ and its 7
astronauts as it made its way into space.
1. The letter M.
When I was five years old, I went to U.S.A for my aunt’s wedding. During that time I got
a chance to visit NASA‘s Kennedy Space Centre. We were lucky enough to see the launch
of the space shuttle ‘DISCOVERY’. This was its last mission to space. We were seated at
a distance of about five miles from the launch site. There was a huge crowd with people
carrying binoculars and cameras of different sizes.

God of Light and Truth,
Thank you for giving me a mind and a heart that can
love. Help me to keep learning everyday of my life for
all the knowledge.
Let me be aware of your presence all the time.

Grant me the grace to explore the world around.

Dream Land Song
Dream land is a place where everyone wants to be.
A place of fantasy and a place of make believe.
The bright light sun makes everyone have fun, where we can splash
in the chocolate stream and where we can slide down from the giant
ice creams.
We can see a rainbow as beautiful like a queen’s throne.
We can play ‘Hide-and seek’ and hide in impossible places behind
the giant ice creams.
We can see beautiful butterflies flying around.
Dreamland is a place of fantasy and make believe.
We rock at singing and poetry and we are very good at dreaming

Swacch Bharat
Gandhiji had decided to keep our surroundings clean. Narendra Modiji has also decided to
not only clean our surroundings but also clean our temples, schools, hospitals, bungalows
and roads.
Gandhiji and Narendra Modiji told our country to make it Swacch Bharat by doing our part.
Let’s put the trash in proper trash bins. Let us keep our classrooms and our play areas
clean and tidy.
We should help our teachers in school and our parents at home. Let’s keep our surroundings
clean.
By doing this our world will be a better place to live in.

Everyone takes a safe country for granted.

A Purpose
what the man said,
People say they CAN’T DO it no more
That they don’t’ live with the strife
They give up way too easy
And end up picking up the kitchen knife
But I do not agree
There’s so much more to life
Whether its hunting down
a new burger joint
Or watching the Sunday game
with the kids and the knife.
Each one is born with a purpose
That purpose may be big or small
Curing cancer or bring a smile
to someone’s face
How you see it is your call
Giving up is a phrase
everyone should forget
It is merely an illusion
You were made to do
something special
Don’t let those TWO words

Yes, it is good to be important
But it is more important to be good
Getting hate in a few eyes
to help the needy

I’m not putting any pressure
You needn’t cure cancer while you’re here
The best thing one can do in my opinion
Does my mother earn her daily bread?
Is bring out a smile from someone’s tear
Was I right? To come here
Without hope and full of fear
Did I have to leave home? My family too?
Is my family’s love really true?
I remember my mother, nice and sweet,
Never stopped me from having a treat,
But shut us out, doesn’t talk at all . . .
On us . . . What is the fate that’ll befall?
My father was kind, like my mother.
He was a man like no other.
But he was killed, in cold blood,
Now he lies under stones and mud,
I was greeted by a man, who said
I could earn the family’s daily bread.
He took me aside, to a store, and grabbed me
and said I wouldn’t see her anymore.
Now I work here, in a factory
Making milk, milk powder and cheese.
Is this what I’m supposed to be?
not following what I dream?
I wanted to be a shopkeeper.
Selling coffee, tea, jam and butter,
So I could earn the family’s bread,
I would do anything to be there instead.
But memories fade away like stale milk,
Like moths eating away bad-looking silk
But I sometimes think about

War is agony
I’m bruised, I’m bleeding but I can’t quit my job
for such things
I see cavalry and soldiers but I can’t jump

Of hope, sometimes misery but why take a
change
I run, I run until I reach the cavalry, tightening
the grip on my lance
I see aggressive soldiers riding horseback,
now, at this moment
I don’t care getting tossed into an abyss
I swoop past the opposing soldiers, stabbing
through them, and thinking what a mess
I hope my mother doesn’t see my bruises and
berates
Instead I hope she is happy that I won the war
and celebrates
But I don’t think that would happen as I just
noticed that
I got stabbed and could feel the sword
So I just said good bye to my caring family, my
dear friends and my fearless colleague
So good bye family, friends, colleagues and

Are Wars Beneficial ?
The term ‘war’ brings to everyone’s mind horrifying images of bloodshed, bodies, death
and destruction. Some say that “In a peaceful world sons bury their fathers, but when in
war, fathers bury their sons”. The consequences of war and the post war period is not
pretty and this is why everyone immediately associates war in extremely negative terms.
What if war could have some benefits as well? Some may argue that the war is a disease
while it lasts, but purifying in its results. Even though the immediate aftermath of war does
not bring peace, years down the road, this war may solve otherwise insolvable problems
of the domestic and political economy and stimulates national growth. It also instigates a
certain sense of nationality and pride in one’s country in every citizens’ heart, young as
well as old. There is a wisdom that comes only from suffering. Also I think that sometimes
war may end with the two nations signing a treaty, which holds true for many decades
and allows a peaceful cooperation between the two parties. War is just another way for
states to resolve their differences. Once the dispute has passed beyond the bounds of
diplomacy, then the next step is to take arms. In such a case, the effects of war follow. If
the war is beneficiary or not is upto the mindset of the masses.

Reverie . . .
Last Requiem
My dirge will echo through the woods,
mourning -lingers in the trees
Shadows shall consume these notes,
Requiems shall stifle my silent screams.
The sun is setting into the mists of the ocean,
the murmur of the trees rings loud and clear
Final notes of mine I cannot set in motion,
Unfinished this song I’m afraid,
death I do not fear.
One last day I beg for,
one more winter I ask,
Thousand voices scream inside,
a face, a thousand masks,
Let me finish this piece,
then I’ll step into the shades
Compose this silent symphony
and into the shadow I’ll fade.
The bird of death pecks away at my glass pane,
by the window, I sit frantic,
outside it sits in pouring rain.
Frantic to write the last few notes,
before its all in vain,
the voices inside shouting,
mind numbing with pain.
These sounds buried deep inside,
secrets I cannot keep,
have to spill them out on paper,
they cannot die with me.
Tune so forlorn, notes so numbing,
that even death will weep,
the bird shatters the window,
these voices finally set free.
The notes shall resound, in years to come,
In the garden of posterity this song is hummed.
This tune shall well outlive my bones
My last requiem echoes over silent stones.

Strong Storm Saves the day !!!
“Run! They’re here! The wolves!” cried a penguin.
There was lot of commotion. The wolves had
entered the penguin territory again! Snowflake (a
kid penguin) and some of her friends prepared
the fire torches. Strong Storm (Snowflake’s
brother) who was also the tallest and strongest
of all the kid penguins was nowhere to be
seen. Though strong; he had a weak point. He
was scared! He hid in a secret room under his
igloo. ‘Where’s Strong Storm?” asked another
penguin. Out came Snowflake with a torch and
all the wolves fled. “If only big brother was here
and was not so scared, there would not be much
destruction”, she said with sigh.
The next day, she and her friends made a plan.
“Strong Storm! Strong Storm! Your sister fell into
the ice hole near the wolves den! Quick! Save
her!” screamed Snowflake’s friends. Strong

ice hole and pulled his sister up. It was then that his sister showed him that they were actually only

But I wanted you to overcome your fear. Change! Strong Storm, Change!” she scolded. Strong
Storm then realized his potential and that he had to change.

The road to fulfilling our Dreams!
“Is life action or contemplation?”
It is said that there are three kinds of people in this world. The once that act without thinking: the
restless youth, the adrenaline junkies and the ‘you-only-live-once (YOLO) life slogan campaigners.
Then there are the ones that think a lot and rarely act: the philosophers, the daydreamers and
the lazy people of this planet. Then again, there is a third category of people that do both in equal
measure. And those are the ones that we come across ever-so-rarely in life. But why so? This is
because most of us born in the first category have never learnt to think of consequences – may
be because we are terrified of them. People belonging to the second set have just not cultivated
enough will power to act on their thoughts, or again – are too afraid to take risks. So its hard to
do things in equal measure for the majority of people. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try.
Rabindranath Tagore once said – “you cannot cross the ocean, merely by staring at the water.”
What this means is that, action and contemplation are inter linked - not one can exist without the
other. Both are essential for success in life. To act without thinking is rash and highly risky and
rarely ever pays off. To think only and not act is not even a start and will never pay off! Therefore,
we must contemplate – press the ‘pause’ button, think, and then when we are sure, JUST GO
FOR IT!

My thoughts on India in the 21st Century . . .

time to ‘American’. No doubt, 21st century is the best time to be – ‘an Indian’. Never before
was the level of confidence in us so high! With Indian companies reaching out and buying
iconic business firms, India, is making her presence felt in the International Business world.
Those days are gone when India was seen as a country of snake charmers, rope tricks and
pompous maharajas. India is now being seen as a country producing entrepreneurs, efficient
doctors, IIT-ians etc. We have set new benchmarks in the fields of technology and management and have made significant contributions to the IT revolution in the country.

My Cosmological view of The Universe
We live in a strange , complex, yet wonderful universe. We, the people on earth, are very inquisitive
Reflections
and have launched many interplanetary missions because there are yet many mysteries. In the
same way earth has also been the biggest mystery of the cosmos. The Big Bang was the dense
hot beginning of the universe. It postulates that about 13.7 billion years ago, the part of the
universe which we can see today was only a few millimeters across, but today it is vastly large and
cooler. So, the universe is multiplying rapidly. We can still discern remnants of the early period in
the cosmic microwave background radiation that permeates all space. The Black hole is a region
of space-time from which nothing, not even light can escape because of its strong gravity. It is
hard to imagine how far away the planets and stars really are and thus, we cannot measure them
in miles or metres, we measure them in light years. In one second, a beam of light will travel in
186,000 miles. Many people have wondered if the concept of ‘time travel’ is possible. My answer
is yes, because worm holes are tunnels of space time that connect distant regions of space and
probably, we might find one someday. Einstein always wondered what would happen if he would
( DEEPTHI, Stage 8 A )
travel faster than the speed of light. But no one is still sure. So, keep thinking!
( RITA ABANI, Class VIII A )
Misconception about life
Life goes on. Whether you choose to move on and take a chance in the unknown. Or stay behind;
locked in the past, thinking of what could have been done. There are many ways that we think
or believe our lives are supposed to be at certain points of it but sometimes we fail to recognize
people’s goals and fantasies. All this leads to certain common conclusions which can also be
categorized as misconceptions.
You say to yourself that once you are done with your education you can be happy and once you
achieve the job of your dreams you can be happy. But this is the other way around. It is much
easier to work hard when you are happy. As every time you reach your goal you look for more
successful goals which will give you happiness.
Happiness is like a butterfly. The more you chase it the more it will elude you. But if you turn your
attention towards other things it comes and softly sits on your shoulder.

Times
Once upon a time,
when all the world blossomed,
When the skies were crystal clear,
And the sun emitted a radiant aura,
That demolished all the negativity
Hidden within the darkness.
I used to sit near a surreal blue lake,
Under a tree of serene gold,
surrounded by foliage,
I was mesmerized and often lured to forsake
From this reality and in my thoughts fly above.
Fly higher, higher than the tallest peaks
Soar above the endless seas,
Fly up towards the sky,
and reach the sun I sought.
And now when I returned to see, I feel;
No nostalgia; for all that serene beauty,
Has vanished and
disintegrated to plain ashes,
The river that I once admired,
Is now blood red, and the lush green foliage,
Has been reduced to mere dust
“This is the cold judgement that
Time has chosen, What has once flourished
shall decline unspoken!”

It was the long nights which Jimmy loved! Jimmy loved his coat because it was the one which

So try your best!
Without thinking he opened his right zip pocket and put his hand. He felt something familiar.
It was the woollen gloves he left sitting on the mantle. They were warm and felt good around
his freezing fingers.
“I wish it would stop snowing!,” Jimmy said, unzipping his pocket. Seconds later the blizzard

sealed the knee pocket, he called out loudly, “I wish I wasn’t lost!”

The metal teeth on the zipper parted. The thick crowded forest cover opened, Jimmy jumped
up and laughed and began to run about. The old blue denim coat had saved him.

As he rushed through the dense bush in the direction of his home one of the coats pocket got
struck. Jimmy stumbled landing in a snow bank. He heard loud growling.
He looked up and saw a huge wolf with sharp teeth standing over him. Jimmy tried to think,

Jimmy reached for the zipper and tried to close it.

main idea that Wrangham put

body to digest food, so we absorb
nutrients and energy faster.

However, there had been no clear explanation for the second change until
Wrangham announced his views: that cooking helped humans evolve.
A review by Simon Ings about Wrangham’s
Fonseca-Azavedo, showed that humans would
need to eat for 9.3 hours a day to
fuel our brains- assuming we were eating raw
food. Cooking reduces the amount of
time we need to spend eating.
Cooking fuelled the evolution of humans. If not

our friends and family?

Peoples Change
Memories don’t
The behavior of human beings is like a river,
always flowing and changing whereas the
memories created during this flow are like a
river bank, always constant and etched in our
heart. Memories have an everlasting impact on
us. Some bitter, some sweet but still holding
importance.
From the first time we ride a bike to the time
we pass out of school we create thousands
of memories, and we’re always taught to hold
onto these memories as they make a huge
impact on our lives in the future. Memories
can be good ones or bad ones. The good
memories help us remember how happy we
were at a point of time and the bad ones help
remember how strong we were to get through
those bad times.
Some memories may be regretful and others
may bring us happiness and relaxation.
Happy memories create a positive feeling in
us. Sorrowful memories are always a curse
whereas happy memories are a blessing.
People are like roses, wilting away but
memories are like the beauty and fragrance of
these roses, that have a lasting impact on us.

The Hidden Language of

“Dance first. Think later. It’s the natural order”
- Samuel Beckett
Actions speak louder than words and dance
is a very prominent form of action. Dance is a
great way of expressing your deepest thoughts
and emotions. There are many different dance
forms; some common, some rare. We will help
you look at dance from a completely different
perspective. You’ll be surprised at how much
dance influences so many cultures and individual mindsets. We will be including elements
of music and it strengthens the message conveyed by dance.

Mind
Food Wastage
The United Nations’ Food and
Agriculture Organisation estimates that onethird of food produced annually for human
consumption worldwide is lost or wasted.
This problem is widely seen in India, though
they also believe that 17% of Indians are still
too undernourished to lead a productive
life. In fact, one-quarter of the world’s
undernourished people live in India, more
than in all of Sub-Saharan Africa. According
to current estimates, India’s total population
will reach 1.45 billion by 2028, similar to
China’s, and 1.7 billion by 2050, equivalent
to nearly the combined population of China
and the United States today. Given that India
is already struggling to feed its population, its
current food crisis could worsen significantly
in the coming decades. What accounts for
India’s chronic food insecurity? Farm output
has been setting new records in recent years,
having increased output from 208 million tons
in 2005 – 2006 to an estimated 263 million
ton in 2013-2014. India needs 225-230 million
tonnes of food per year; so, even accounting
for recent population growth, food production
is clearly not the main issue.
26

( HRIDAY JOSHI, Class V B )
The question of hunger in India is less
about insufficient food production but
of excessive food wastage. The lack of
refrigerated transport and storage facilities
means food can’t stay fresh when it’s
spending hours on the road. The absence
of modern food distribution chains, too few
cold storage centres and refrigerated trucks,
poor transportation facilities, erratic electricity
supply, and the lack of incentives to invest in
the sector have resulted in much food being
spoilt. The Indian Institute of Management in
Kolkata estimates that cold storage facilities
are available for only 10% of perishable food
products, leaving around 370 million tonnes of
perishable products at risk. According to the
previous Indian administration, this logistical
problem has resulted in US$8.3 billion worth
of food being thrown away every year. Experts
have warned that such massive wastage
in wholesale markets across the country is
threatening India’s food security. According
to the 2014 Global Hunger Index, the hunger
status in India has improved from “alarming”
to “serious”. Still, more than 190 million
people continue to starve. India produced an
estimated 263 million tonnes of food last year,
of which 33 million tonnes was excess output.
Agriculture and rural development is high on
the Indian government’s agenda.
It has planned to allocate a large portion of
the sector’s US$327 budget to reducing
food spoilage by improving food processing
industries.
“We want to take primary
processing centres as close to the farmers’
doorsteps as possible so that between the
farm and fork, wastage is reduced,” said
Harsimarat Kaur Badal, federal minister of
food processing. “Now besides working
on a cold chain grid throughout India, the
other thing that we are working on is creating
maximum number of cold storage facilities
also for different kinds of food products.” This
is a good start, but more must be done to
keep India from starving. India will not have
enough arable land, irrigation, or energy to
provide enough nutritious food to the future
population if 35 – 40 % of food output is left
to rot. The new Modi government should
therefore consider alternative ways (other
than growing more food) to solve India’s food
crisis.

There is nothing wrong is being peaceful and quiet in this modern world. It is said that “The
quietest people have the loudest mind”, and this is a quote that is absolutely true but the
creative and thoughtful mind is never shown publicly. This is because these people never talk
much and when they have some thought they feel it might be something wrong or something
which world humiliate him/her. These people even think that they cannot be a leader and are
just mere followers; this is also the thought of many extroverts. But this absolutely makes no
sense considering the examples of introverts such as Mahatma Gandhi and Bill Gates, they
are the leaders who inspired billions and changed this world. The only way one can come out
of this misconception is by the help of others. People who tend to be socially shy should be
encouraged to talk more by their fellow friends, teachers, employees or parents. Once they get
the grip and confidence to talk more they can express themselves freely. Only then they can
understand that their shy nature was because of this misconception.

Field Trips
Meteorological Centre
Both CBSE and Cambridge students of Stage 8 visited the Meteorological centre in Hyderabad as part of their lesson on Weather and Climate. Field
trips are the best way to enhance the child’s inquisitiveness and also bridge the gap between knowing and seeing. Students enjoyed the trip as they
were very familiar with the terms being told in the trip and could relate them to the instruments.
Police Commissionerate
Our Prefects from grades 6 to 10 made a quick trip to the police grounds to witness live action and also see instruments and equipment of various makes
and models used for civil protection. They were highly benefited by this exposure and came back to share the experience with the assembly.
Ramoji Film city
Where education meets entertainment there bodies and minds grow healthily. A trip to the Ramoji film city developed great team work and individual grit
to perform the different tasks and activities. A wide range of exotic birds that were exhibited caught their attention as well.
Nehru Centenary Tribal Museum
The moment the group of 129 students of std 7 & 8 entered the museum they stepped into a world of terrakottta figures of tribal people and got lost in it.
The colourful array of terracotta DIMSA dancers welcomed the visitors against an aura of verdant valleys and hills highlighting 15 different tribal groups.
The Information Centre held the students’ awe. Pictures, charts and figures gave details about the different Tribes of India. This visual presentation by
ITDA ( Indian Tribal Development association ) was very informative and helped the students empathise with those who are grappling with the challenges
of survival without the bare necessities in life.

The school excursion to the North of India comprising the places of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur took our middle school students into the world
of wistful Rajas, dynastys and monuments. History became a breathing pulsing depiction before their eyes. This experience brought
enlightment to their bookish comprehension.
EDUCATIONAL TRIP-BOMBAY STOCK EXCHANGE
Students of Class XI (Commerce) were taken on an Educational trip to the Bombay
Stock Exchange, Mumbai. The First day was spent attending a lecture by Dr. Paniker, an
Economist, then a visit to the RBI Monetary Museum, Public Library, and Gateway of India
was made. The next day students visited the big market where commodities from all over
India are brought for price fixing, including cotton, in large quantities. The last day they
visited a facility where diamonds are segregated according to carat value. This has been
a value addition to their academic pursuit.

Alumni Meet
When bonds are created, they are meant to, strengthen and support over the years. The
Alumni Meet is a confirmation of just that. Students come, stay on, bid farewell at one phase
but at the next, they come they reconnect and bid many more reunions. CHIREC has always
derived immeasurable joy at organizing these meets, to see their very own, moving far and
out, making a difference in peoples lives and their own and returning to the nest to rejoice
with the Almamater.

“The trip was humbling for all of us as we were able to interact with people
outside our usual social bracket. The work we did to help involved sifting sand
and carrying it up to the roof to dry, and other manual labor for the better part
of the day.
Following our experience of the other side of the society, it struck us how fortunate we are and how it is our responsibility as the more privileged ones to aid
others who are not blessed with the same luxuries as us.” Tania Shukla, IB 11

Cultural Exchange
A Travelogue
The student exchange programme to Thayer Academy
from 25th April to 8th May, 2014 was a splendid
experience. 12 students and 2 faculty members made
these two weeks very memorable both for themselves
and for those they came across.
Being greeted by the coordinator, Jim Pickel, and the
host families on arrival, set the tone for a very purposeful
association. There was absolutely no anxiety and we
were all instantly accepted for who we were. The only
anxiety that gripped us was our ability to withstand the
weather. It was cold, windy and raining.
Come Monday the 11th, and our visit to the school
amazed us. Meeting the staff, management, and the
students was very pleasant. Schedules for classroom
attendance was handed over to each one of us. The classes in progress gave us an idea of their teacher- student relationship and teaching styles. Here,
it must be mentioned that CHIREC does not stand far behind. For the rest of the week, daily visits to Boston by train were arranged. We visited the JFK
Museum, the Science Museum, the Omni Theatre at Harvard University, the Prudential Building, the Boston Public Park, and the Trinity Church, amongst
other tourist places of interest. We also had the pleasure of whale watching. At Braintree, we visited the Plymouth Plantation, the Wrentham mall, the
Braintree Mall, and other places as well.
The visit had a purpose, and it was fulfilled more than 100 percent, getting to understand their best teaching practices and the American culture. We are
all richer by the experience.
CHIREC student exchange programme is going to go places, and Thayer Academy is just one stop.

Commonwealth Essay Competition!
WHAT ROLE DOES COMPETITION PLAY IN OUR LIVES?
In a world brimming with challenges, to escape competition is nearly unimaginable. We encounter
considerable instances of competition in our daily lives. Many of these instances encourage us to work
harder and make the best use of our potential, for example, improving grades not when compared to
others, but for our own satisfaction. This helps us to give a better performance in the process. After
all, everyone adores a champion or a winner. They all look up to him as a role model, or maybe even
as an inspiration. He appears to be a ‘conqueror’ in the eyes of the audience. It is, undoubtedly, a
reason to be proud of - a reason for everybody else to invest in his glory. He also becomes a reason
for his opponents to work harder to achieve the very same respect.
Therefore, competition is a good thing. It’s about finding out how well you can do something when you
are under pressure. It’s about challenging yourself to get better. It can be about working together with
others to accomplish a goal. You compete to succeed; to be the best you can be. It’s about wanting
to win, working to win and preparing to win. If success comes too easily, there is no reason to work very hard. Then, when facing a tough opponent, he
or she may lack the determination to battle, and will give up emotionally.
We can have competition with ourselves (often our toughest opponent). Competing with our own self will permit us to improve and get better each time.
It will provide us with an abiding sense of satisfaction and achievement. We can compete with another person, team, business or country. It’s the same
in a class play as it is giving a band performance. To have a good outcome, a person has to focus on and commit to doing the work needed to improve.
Doing one’s best when something is really important is a challenge which everyone should attempt.
Competition also has a bad reputation, however. Even in a Thesaurus, synonyms for “competitive” are “bloodthirsty” and “cut-throat.” That’s about
as negative and unattractive as it can get. When did yearning to win become a wrong thing? When did losing to someone become unforgettable and
unforgivable? These questions lead to an unpleasant answer. Competition became ugly when it became so important to win, that our sporting culture
embraced a “win-at-all-costs” ideology. Children and their coaches are under immense pressure to win today, so much so, that the fun has faded out of
playing sports for many. It has become a hub, not for improvement, but for wide-spread cheating, inflated egos, bad sportsmanship, personal attacks
and player burn out.
The theme, ‘Team Commonwealth’, represents a spirit of benevolence and inclination for the mutual objectives that prevail among the 53 countries that
are a part of this colossal tournament. Throughout this event, their values will strengthen and their team work and co-operation will empower them to
create not only a desirable society, but one that progresses and advances with resilience.
“Competition is a rude yet effective motivation.” Competition has a bizarre, and yet impressive way to unfold the potential within a credible candidate. In
simple words it means; the activity or condition of striving to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others. When a person
has the formula to get all the motivation and determination, it’s praiseworthy. Not only does the person have all the self confidence they need, they also
have perseverance which helps them maintain the former trait.
At the other end, however, if he has someone competing against him, he has stronger incentives. When you have another contestant, at the same level
as yours, working hard to achieve the same, it pushes you forward, urges you, to outdo his accomplishments. In the same way, your opponent would
too, try to excel beyond your achievements. This process unknowingly brings out your maximum potential.
Seemingly, there are two sides to every coin. “Life is not a competition; life is about contributing, complementing and cooperating.” This quote is
deceiving and yet it is true till some extent. Competition in every society creates disunity and rivalry between the participants and many a times, dwindles
the chances of healthy sportsmanship. Desperate to be the winner, some candidates resort to malpractices and choose the easy way to the finish line.
They bury their values and think of victory only to be a matter of their reputation.
What if there were no tournaments and competitions, and only a situation similar to hamster cage existed? The ‘participants’ would aimlessly run,
having no absolute sense of their goal, or their progress, even. A rat race and competition seem very like, but their purpose and consequences differ.
Competition teaches us ethics and co-operation, it helps us mould our character into, if not the best, a better one. While on the other hand, a rat race is
a desultory and haphazard lumber towards a deep breath of short lived victory.
Team Commonwealth has bestowed Glasgow as home to several athletes and a thrilled audience for the 2014 Games. They aspire to orchestrate this
distinguished competition as an event not to be forgotten and to be cherished by plenty. Competitions held at such an enormous scale are bound to
have their values in order. Sincerity and integrity forms the foundation of any organisation, and they go hand in hand with aspirations and responsibility.
It shouldn’t be considered a liability, and the entire game plan should be executed passionately and vigorously. Thereon, begins the quest to establish
the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games in a systematic and eventful way.
After analysing this vast concept of competition, when I google ‘co-operation’ the search engine explains that; it is the action or process of working
together to the same end. Naturally, we perceive both - competition and co-operation - to be antonyms. While the former makes us work against each
other, the latter makes us work together. Per contra, combining both the concepts can give us a promising scenario, competition + cooperation =
comperation, which is precisely what the Commonwealth Games’ objective is! Among the many beliefs, nations, dialects, and cultures, these Games will
bring about a variation in the mental outlook and spread wholly to every continent. Over the years, the extensive planning and preparation will definitely
be achieved and the excited spectators will have a massive ‘comperation’ to look forward to!
