Scriptural Reflection for the Week
“Brothers and sisters: Put on, as God’s chosen ones,
holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance
against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must
you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the
bond of perfection.” (see Colossians 3:12-21) On this
feast of the Holy Family, these words of Saint Paul remind
us of the goal of family life. Family is the school where we
learn what it means to be a human person made in the image and likeness of God. In this school, the teachers, the
parents, are open to learning as well. But from whom? From
God. Every parent needs to instill the virtues Saint Paul
mentions. And every parent needs to ask God for the grace
to live and witness these virtues in the way they are spouses and parents. A child doesn't learn gentleness and patience from a stubborn, belligerent parent. Instead, that child
may also end up stubborn and belligerent! Saint Paul has
given us our New Year’s Resolution- “put on love, that is,
the bond of perfection.”
Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God: A Holyday of
Obligation
Masses are at: Tuesday, 12/31 at 4:00pm
Wednesday, 1/1/ at 8:30am and 10:00am
We begin a new year by going to Mass and invoking God’s
blessing upon our families and our parish. Mary, the Mother
of Jesus, and our Mother, calls us together around her Son.
Carnevale 2014 at St. Catherine’s
Is scheduled for Saturday, February 22nd (snow date is
March 1). Tickets will be available soon. Dinner is being prepared by Papa Ciro’s of New Hyde Park and the evening’s
entertainment will be provided by the group, PRIMAVERA

Reflection
Joseph’s obedience to God was not a one-time
thing. His attention to the angel’s warning kept
Jesus from being murdered by Herod and led to
the fulfillment of the prophecy that the Messiah
would be a Nazorean. Fidelity to God’s will
assures the best use of my talents, too!
Stewardship
We are grateful this week for all stewards in our
parish who seek be as open as Joseph to the
leading of the Holy Spirit, understanding clearly
and rejoicing in what God is calling them to be
and to do!

ank you does not say enough to express our deep
feelings of gratitude to all of you who gave so
generously to our Christmas Food Drive. It was tremendous!
We were able to give baskets to over
100 poor families in our area.
We also want to thank all those who volunteered to deliver the
baskets, and especially the children who helped to carry them.
Our thanks also goes out to all the volunteers who worked for
weeks to set up the baskets.

Pope celebrates birthday by having breakfast with homeless men

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- As part of a low-key celebration of his 77th birthday,
Pope Francis had breakfast with three people who live on the streets near the Vatican.
A small dog, belonging to one of the homeless men, was also on the guest list.
The pope started the day with his usual morning Mass held in the chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae residence where he lives.
However, he requested that the Mass be attended by the residence staff "in order to
create a particularly family atmosphere for the celebration," the Vatican press office
said in a written statement Dec. 17. Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of
Cardinals, represented the world's cardinals at the Mass, and Archbishop Pietro Parolin, Vatican secretary of state, attended.
After the Mass, all those present sang "Happy Birthday" to the pope, the Vatican
statement said. The pope then met with everyone, including three homeless men who
were brought there by Archbishop Konrad Krajewski, the papal almoner.

The archbishop invited the first group of men he had found early that morning sleeping under the large portico in front of the Vatican press hall on the main boulevard in front of St. Peter's Square, according to the
Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano.
"Would you like to come Pope Francis' birthday party," he asked them, reported the paper.
The men, in their forties, were from Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic. They loaded all their belongings in the archbishop's
car; the dog rode in the middle.
When they got to the residence, they waited for the Mass to end, then greeted the pope. Together with Archbishop Krajewski, they
gave the pope a bouquet of sunflowers, because they always turn toward the sun like the church turns toward its sun, Christ, the archbishop explained.
The pope invited the men to have breakfast with him in the residence dining room, where they talked and shared a few laughs.
One of the men told the pope, "It's worthwhile being a vagrant because you get to meet the pope," the paper said.
The pope was scheduled to carry out a normal workday, the Vatican said.
Some Vatican offices paid homage to the pope in different ways: the Vatican television center created a special video of visual highlights of Pope Francis' nine-month-long pontificate; the Vatican internet office posted on the vatican.va website an e-album of images and quotes by the pope; the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, rolled out a newly designed website at
www.osservatoreromano.va that lets readers easily share stories on social media.
A group representing the pope's favorite soccer squad -- San Lorenzo de Almagro -- had wanted to celebrate the pope's birthday by
showing him the Argentine league championship trophy they won Dec. 16.
However, Passionist Father Ciro Benedettini, vice director of the Vatican press office, said it was expected the group would meet the
pope Dec. 18.
A group of children receiving assistance from the Vatican's St. Martha Dispensary, a maternal and pediatric clinic, had given the
pope a surprise birthday party Dec. 14 marked with singing, a real cake with candles and a sweater as a gift.
When presented with the cake, the pope blew out the candles with the children and joked, "I'll tell you later if it's good or not."
Pilgrims gathered for the Angelus prayer in St. Peter's Square Dec. 15 also sang "Happy Birthday" as they waited for the pope to
appear at the window of the apostolic palace.

COLOR IN THE HOLY FAMILY
THE FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY

The Feast of the Holy Family is not just about the Holy Family, but about our
own families. The main purpose of the Feast is to present the Holy Family as
the model for all Christian families, and for domestic life in general. Our family life becomes sanctified when we live the life of the Church within our
homes. St. John Chrysostom urged all Christians to make each home a
"family church," and in doing so, we sanctify the family unit. Just how does
one live out the Church in the family? The best way is by making Christ the
center of family and individual life. Ways to do this include: reading scripture
regularly, praying daily, attending Mass on at least on Sundays and Holy
Days of Obligation, imitating actions of the Holy Family, going to confession
frequently, all done together as a family unit.
The shared lives of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus give us a model for our own
family life. As a family, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were singularly focused on
doing God's will. They made serving Him a priority in everything they did.
Mary said “yes” at the Annunciation, willing to bring shame on her family
since she was not yet married. Joseph followed an angel’s advice and left
everything to lead his family to Egypt to protect Jesus. Jesus stayed in the
synagogue to be with His Father, knowing his parents would worry about
him. If we take time to read and meditate on these stories, they can be opportunities to reflect on our own lives as parents and children.
PRAY TOGETHER …
as the family of God who share in His
life.
Father in heaven, creator of all,
you ordered the earth to bring forth life,
and crowned its goodness
by creating the family of man.
In history's moment when all was ready
You sent your Son to dwell in time,
obedient to the laws of life in our world.
Teach us the sanctity of human love,
show us the value of family life,
and help us to live in peace with all men
that we may share in your life forever.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
AMEN.
One way to really celebrate this feast is to follow the life of the Holy Family.
Read one of the stories at the beginning of the Gospels of Matthew or Luke
and put yourself in the shoes of one of the family members. What thoughts,
feelings, and fears do you experience as you imagine yourself in the story?
Read the stories together and share what you found to be challenging about
the stories and why you think God did what he did and why Jesus, Mary, and
Joseph did what they did. End with a simple question: “How can we be more
like the Holy Family?”
One thing about the life of the Holy Family is that, they traveled a lot. Joseph
and Mary traveled to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. Joseph, Mary, and
Jesus moved to Egypt to escape Herod. As a family, they went to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. Plan a spiritual trip for your family. Look for local
shrines or plan to attend Mass at your diocesan cathedral. Talk about how
you would like to become more like the Holy Family, and keep these intentions in mind while you pray a prayer of consecration together. Variations of
this prayer can be found on the internet.
The Holy Family feast is a good time to remember the family unit and pray
for our human and spiritual families. We also may take this feast to reflect on
the value and sanctity of the family unit, and to evaluate our own family life.
What ways may it be improved? What would Jesus, Mary, and Joseph do?
Finally, we can use this feast to ask ourselves what are we doing to promote
the family within our own cultures, neighborhoods, and communities.

Visitation of the Sick and Homebound

receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, and also to
receive Holy Communion.
Holy Hour – on the first Friday of the month after the 8:30 am
Mass with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and concluding
with Benediction.
Devotions
The Rosary – is recited daily before the 8:30 am Weekday Masses.
Miraculous Medal Novena and Special Prayers to St. Anthony are
said on Thursdays after the 8:30 am Mass.

There are no classes scheduled in Faith Formation for the week of December 30th.
Classes resume the week of January 6, 2014.
The joy of the season should be completed by
attending all Christmas Liturgies. January 1st,
we celebrate the Solemnity of the Mother of
God. This is a day of obligation. Please try to
begin the new year by attending Mass.
