Candidate for Judging
2016
Grand National Show
Derek Fernandez
Summerfield, Florida
My name is Derek Fernandez. I am a native from Puerto Rico, who came to reside to
Florida in 1988. I would like to be considered as one of the candidates to judge this year
National Show.
I am fair and extremely honest when judging the Paso Fino horse. My intention is to
provide our members fair judging of the 4 beat lateral gait. I judge the horse that is
presented in front of me on that day and not who is riding it or who owns it. I am for
the improvement of the quality of judging and promoting our Paso Fino horses. I own
DNA Paso Fino since November 1999, Where I am an active breeder of the Paso Fino
horses, and have been training Paso Fino horses since the mid 80’s. I also provide
lessons to the amateur and youth riders.
I have trained many National and World Champions, In 2001 I had the honor to carry
the American Flag at Nationals in honor of September 11. I became PFHA certified
judge in 2007. In 2009 and 2014 I had the honor to judge the Pre Spectrum Show. In 2009
I also judged the Pre Extravaganza. I have also judged numerous times the show in
Tennessee, I also judged in Pendleton, South Carolina; Dillsburg, Pennsylvania;
Syracuse, New York State Fair; Tampa State Fair; Raleigh, North Carolina State Fair;
Hattiesburg, Missouri; and many shows in Miami Florida. I am qualified to judge all
divisions, taking special interest in the future of the Paso Fino. I enjoy doing
seminars for the Amateur and our Youth. They are our future and I enjoy advising
them so they can become better riders, horsemen and horsewomen. I will like to
thank you in advance for the opportunity.

o Training not just the actionable riding but how the training of other breeds is done in which one helps the rider
through a combination of the sharing of the two minds and in coming to a conclusion what is the best option for
the horse and its performance.
o From the point of the breeder you have to take into consideration not only the training, aspects of behavior and
the horse’s way of moving, but also defects and flaws that have to be seen from the ground.
o Encompassing the horse as an individual from diet to behavior and many other intricacies in which you almost
have to live with them to understand.
