Pneu-Dart, Inc. was born in the majestic mountains of
Central Pennsylvania in the village of Barbours. Founded
in 1967, Pneu-Dart started as a small basement operation
developing animal darting equipment for livestock and wild
game industries. Our mission was based simply on the philosophy of giving the customer what it wants – and what
works. We have enjoyed steady growth over the years due to
invaluable feedback from ranchers and rangers. These ideas
have improved and continue to improve the product line. In
fact, eight of the seventeen projectors we have produced are
still in production today. Our darts have been modified and
perfected to the point that they are unparalleled in design

Polycarbonate & Aluminum Body
Note: The .5 cc, 1 cc, and 1.5 cc ‘C’, and
‘P’ darts appear to be identical, but the
‘C’ dart has a slightly larger tail diameter
for use in our cartridge-fired projectors.
TYPE ‘C’ DISPOSABLE DARTS
Pneu-Dart Type ‘C’ disposable darts are .50 caliber and are designed to provide
precise drug delivery in a convenient, inexpensive projectile. These darts are appropriate for use on small or large animals. Color coded in orange, Type ‘C’ darts
are best used with our cartridge projectors.
TYPE ‘P’ DISPOSABLE DARTS
Pneu-Dart Type ‘P’ darts (color coded in yellow) are for use with our CO2 Air
projectors and Blo-Jector. As with the Type ‘C’ darts, these darts are appropriate
for use on small or large animals.

with “Flight Stabilizers” which
ensure a snug fit in other
brands of dart projectors.
TYPE ‘U’ DISPOSABLE DARTS
“Type U” Darts are our most versatile and universal tail design for Pneu-Dart
and non Pneu-Dart Projectors. Type U tails have been created to support 1/2cc
– 5cc darts in conjunction with projectors not manufactured by Pneu-Dart. Type
U tails for 6cc – 10cc darts are our standard tail design for any projector. Many
of our more seasoned customers may be familiar with these as ‘P’ Type Dart with
Flight Stabilizer Tails.
POLY DART BODIES (.5 CC TO 1.5 CC)
Pneu-Dart has fortified its plastic dart body by transitioning over to clear polycarbonate resin. Equipped with a color-coded polypropylene Type ‘C’ or Type ‘P’
tail, the new PolyCarb dart is ballistically equal and structurally superior. (Poly
darts are only available in .5 cc - 1.5 cc darts.)
ALUMINUM DART BODIES (2 CC - 10 CC)
Made out of aluminum tubing, our darts are designed to ensure optimum performance under any condition.
HOW THEY WORK
Type ‘C’, ‘P’ and ‘U’ darts contain a small explosive charge which detonates on
impact and quickly injects the drug. Darts equal to or less than 1 cc do not

GREEN and RED Gelatin Collars
Designed to assist in easy identification we have elected
to use two colors for our Gelatin Collars. The traditional Green color is now used on all end-port discharge
cannulas. The Red Gelatin Collars are now assigned to our
Tri-Port (end and side port) discharge cannulas. Although
different in color our gelatin collars function equally as
reliable as they have in the past.

mechanics, the dart will “flash” when activated, a
real asset in low-light conditions.
CANNULA LENGTHS
Darts are available with 14-gauge cannula in lengths of
3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1 1/4", 1 1/2" and 2".
Darts 1.5 cc through 10 cc are equipped with a gelatin
collar but can be ordered with a wire barb. 3/8" cannula
are available in plain only. 1/2" cannula are available in
gelatin collars only. We do not recommend wire barbs or
gelatin collars on 1/2 cc or 1 cc darts; however, they are
available at an additional cost. Gelatin collars comprise
of an inert material retaining the dart in place until the
injection is made, and after several minutes will liquefy,
allowing the dart to fall freely from the animal.
The chart listed below is a general guide for
cannula lengths when administering intramuscular injections. Thirteen gauge cannula in specific lengths are also
available. When ordering, please specify type of dart and

DNA-DART
Working closely with our
customers, we designed and
built our DNA dart on a 2 cc
dart body to remove a sample
consisting of both the dermis
and hypodermis material.
Attached to the aluminum nose cone is a stainless steel cutter measuring approximately 0.165" × 0.150" and encompasses a barbed “capture claw” to ensure
sample retention. Field trials produced excellent results yielding three independent DNA tests from a single sample. Regardless of your distance, just point and
shoot. Upon impact, the DNA dart retains a sample and falls to the ground.
Equaling all Pneu-Dart darts, our DNA darts are available in the following
three tail designs: Type ‘C’ for our Cartridge Fired Projectors; Type ‘P’ for CO2 and
Air Activated Projectors; and Type ‘P’ with flight stabilizers for other brands of
projectors.

BIOPSY DART
Ideal for gathering sample tissue for analysis, the
Pneu-Dart Biopsy Dart contains a farrel“cutter” on
the outside protecting the three barbs on the inside
of the cylinder. Upon hitting your desired target, simply unscrew the farrel containing the tissue sample.

MODEL 389 (CARTRIDGE FIRED)
The Model 389 is the latest and most advanced cartridge-fired projector of
the modern day era. Although unique, the Model 389 is a collaborative design
based on its predecessor’s best attributes. The Model 389 has proven to be the
most versatile, accurate, and consistent cartridge-fired projector ever made. The
hinged, breach loading dart barrel supports any size dart and is equipped with
our revolutionary Airflow Control Ports. Our ACP technology aligns with the
exiting gas at the muzzle, thereby virtually eliminating “tail-kick” of the dart.
The five position power control has been moved closer to the shooter ensuring
silent, quick, and safe power adjustment for any shot distance.

**Cycling for Models 196 and 389
Recent field studies have concluded that cartridge-based projectors perform best when given
adequate time to cycle.
By definition: Cycling implies the ability for
the gas chamber, within a cartridge-fired projector, to replenish itself with fresh oxygen. When
achieved the projector yields a more consistent
burn rate in each charge fired. Failure to do so
results in less oxygen yielding lower combustion
levels (e.g., reduced muzzle velocities) for subsequent darts fired at less than 30-second intervals.

Break Open
Shotgun type
The Model 176B, a breech loading projector, is a CO2-operated dart projector
recommended for close range shooting. It is ideal for penned animals and for use in
populated areas (e.g., dog control). Under ideal conditions (no wind) these projectors are accurate up to 40 yards. By using the power control valve, caged animals can
be shot as close as two yards without injury. This rifle is powered by a 12-gram CO2
cylinder only.

person who has limited or occasional use for an immobilizing gun. Its design is
simple yet effective.

Recommendation:
Although we only recommend 1/2 cc - 1 1/2 cc darts,
at close range some of our more windy customers are
successful with our larger darts.

PNEU-DART BLO-JECTOR KIT
With Type ‘P’ darts, our economical Blo-Jector device can be effective from 1 to
30 ft. and is very simple to use. It is an ideal tool for the person with occasional,
close-range use, such as animal shelter and zoo personnel, veterinarians, and
individuals who have deer penned. With the proper drug, animals from the size
of monkeys to steer can be successfully immobilized. There is minimal bruising
or tissue damage because dart impact is very light.
Place dart in end with mouth piece. Sight over end of tube with both eyes
open and give a hearty puff. With a little practice, you can be amazingly accurate.

12-GRAM POWERLET CO2 CARTRIDGES
Clean piercing, rust resistant cartridges traditionally
facilitate 5 to 20 shots per cartridge (Number of shots is
dependent upon projector model that is being used and size of dart.)
CO2 systems which relying upon internal pin valves, similar to those found within Pneu-Dart Models
176B and 179B, are designed to permit CO2 gas to expand when exposed to the atmosphere. The
rate of expansion is directly related to ambient temperature; i.e., cooler temperatures (< 50°F)
yield slower expansion rates thereby reducing the effective muzzle velocity. To combat this phenomenon, the use of hand warmers and/or limiting the exposure of the projector to atmospheric
conditions is highly recommended.
3.5-OZ. CYLINDER FOR X-CALIBER ONLY
“Team Pneu-Dart” recommends our commercially cleaned 3.5oz.
cylinders. With over 50 to 100 shots per fill volume, each tank
can literally last for hours in the field or on the practice range,
plus, it’s refillable. Equipped with a pin valve, removal of the
cylinder after each session is easy and efficient. (Note: The 3.5oz
cylinders ship empty.)
OUR 3.5oz. cylinders are made of high strength 6061-T6 aluminum alloy. Each
cylinder is manufactured in accordance with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) 3AL and Transport Canada (TC) 3ALM requirements.

In order to correctly calculate the drug dosage required to immobilize a particular animal, the worker must know three factors.
1. Estimated weight of the animal. If the weight of the animal is estimated in pounds (lbs), it should be converted to kilograms (kg) as dosages
are expressed in mg/kg (milligram of drug per kilogram of body weight)
required to produce immobilization. One lb equals .454 kg and the conversion is made by multiplying the estimated lbs by .454. Thus, a 100 lb
animal weighs 45.4 kg. Because 1.0 lb is almost equal to 1/2 kg, a simpler
conversion can be made by dividing the estimated weight in lbs by 2. By
this method the 100-lb animal weighs 50 kg. Because of the difficulty in
accurately estimating the weight of an animal and the safety margin of

DRUG DOSAGE CALCULATION GUIDE
The pharmaceutical industry in this country has not been very responsive to the
needs for safe, effective, and less costly drugs for animal restraint or immobilization. Some progress has been made over the past 20 years, but there is still a
long way to go before the ideal immobilization drug may become available. In
the meantime, the worker should become adept in using the products currently
in the market.
A combination of two or more compatible and complementary drugs may
often constitute the best dosage for certain species and for that reason, such
combinations, or cocktails, are widely used by wildlife workers.
The mixtures of drugs for immobilization purposes usually consist of a primary drug such as a narcotic of cyclohexamine with a neuroleptic added. There are
several reasons for including a neuroleptic (sedative) with the primary immobilizing drug. In most cases, the neuroleptic may potentiate the primary drug
and negate the commonly encountered side effects of the narcotics or cyclohexamines. This provides for a shorter and smoother induction and safer and less
troublesome immobilization.
In addition to the immobilizing drug and a complementary neuroleptic, an
enzyme which will speed absorption of these drugs may also be included in the
total dosage.
In spite of the good results, which may be obtained through the combination
of drugs, this is not recommended by the manufacturers of the drugs involved.
One reason is that the required testing of such application. Another reason
is purely commercial. The drug manufacturers are interested in selling more
of their own products, not in recommending or promoting another company’s
products.
The responsibility for the correct use and storage of the drugs rests entirely
with the user. This includes the worker, the veterinarian responsible for obtaining and dispensing the drug, and, finally, the agency. The manufacturer of these
drugs will not be liable or assume any responsibility for the use, misuse, or
possible abuse of their products.

2. The dosage recommended for the species. This is the dosage recommended to produce immobilization in a particular species. Dosage recommendations may be provided by a veterinarian, the drug package insert,
or by consulting dosage tables in reference literature. The suggested
dosage tables are given in mg/kg (milligram of drug per kilogram of body
weight.)
3. Concentration of the drug used. The concentration (solution strength)
of the drug is listed on the label of the vial, on the package, and in the
package insert. It is given as mg/ml (milligram of drug per milliliter of
liquid volume). To minimize the drug volume, and consequent size of the
dart, the highest available concentration of a given drug should be used.
For all practical purposes, 1.0 ml (milliliter) is equal to 1.0 cc (cubic centimeter)
of liquid volume. On the basis of these three factors, the drug dosage is calculated as follows:
Animal weight (kg) × dosage (mg/kg) / Concentration of drug (mg/ml) =
drug volume in ml or cc.
The manner in which a drug may effect an animal and the level of immobilization produced are subject to a number of factors. In addition to the animal’s
weight, age, sex, physical condition, and mental state at the time of injection,
individual animals will have varying degrees of sensitivity to the drug. This
can produce different and unexpected results from one animal to another even
within the same species. Excitable animals will usually require a higher dosage
than calm animals. Also, females may require a higher dosage than males to
produce a satisfactory level of immobilization.

FIELD DISPENSING OF DRUGS
The drugs used for animal immobilization may be dispensed in one of two ways.
The choice of drugs and prevailing circumstances will be the deciding factors.
The first method consists of loading the darts after the target animal has been
located and observed. The animal’s weight is estimated and its physical and mental
condition noted. Other factors which may influence the choice of drug dosage are
age, sex, stress level, and aggressiveness. On this basis, the dosage is calculated
and loaded in a dart of suitable volume capacity. This is the safest method and
provides the best control of dosage, induction time and level of immobilization. The disadvantages of this method are the time required to calculate the
dosage and load the darts, and the problems of dispensing drugs and filling
darts under difficult field conditions.
The second method consists of the use of darts loaded before the animal is
located or observed. This method can only be used for the central nervous system

“My darts bounce off the animal.”
1/2 cc and 1 cc darts without collars or barbs usually bounce on impact,
but because of the small volume, a complete injection is normally made.
“The drug runs out of the dart needle when putting in the drug.”
If this happens, it is because your syringe needle is not long enough. Syringe needles should be at least 1/2" longer than the dart needle.
“The dart did not inject drug.”
This is usually the result of low impact or an angle shot. Increase velocity
with perpendicular impact.
“Something is wrong with my cartridge rifle, dart flight is erratic or short.”
Not usually the rifle, but the .22 caliber charges. We sell only CCI and have
found them to be the most consistent.
“I cannot put the syringe needle into the dart needle.”
Dart may have detonated in transit. Return package with darts and we will
replace them.
“The drug sprays out of the dart after leaving the gun barrel.”
Barrel is possibly damaged or dirty. If the problem is still present after
recent cleaning, please return to our facility for inspection.
DART TIP
High Viscosity Drug Loading Technique
Question: When using a high viscosity (thicker) type drug, medicines, and the
like, what is the best way to fill my dart?
Answer: Use a ¾ inch 14-gauge needle to draw the drug from the nurse bottle
and then swap it out to the 19 gauge hypo fill needle. By doing so, you will
not be spending as much time trying to fill your syringe.
CYCLING FOR MODELS 193, 196, AND 389
Recent field studies have concluded that cartridge-based projectors perform best
when given adequate time to cycle.
By definition: Cycling implies the ability for the gas chamber, within a cartridgefired projector, to replenish itself with fresh oxygen. When achieved the projector yields a more consistent burn rate in each charge fired. Failure to do so
results in less oxygen yielding lower combustion levels (e.g. reduced muzzle
velocities) for subsequent darts fired at less than 30 second intervals.

a certain species and size of animal and given to the worker as may be required.
(Note: Preloading darts is not recommended. If you choose to preload, the darts
should be used within 24 hours.)
