DECA Students Partner With Chamber Of
Commerce For ‘Shop Local’ Campaign
BPHS seniors Cassie Brown, Abby Hartzell and
Kelsey Tischler partnered with the Bethel Park
Chamber of Commerce on a “Shop Local” campaign.
The students developed two online surveys—one
for consumers to gauge their interest in supporting
Bethel Park businesses and the other for businesses
to find out what they need from the Chamber.
The students coordinated a Santa Breakfast for 92
children. The BPHS lobby was decorated with 10
artificial trees, generously donated by Chamber
businesses and decorated by BPHS student groups.
The trees were raffled off, with the money going
directly to the student groups. The DECA tree was
decorated with $5 gift certificates from Bethel Park
businesses, to encourage people to “shop local.”
Cassie, Abby and Kelsey were happy to participate
in this project, which gave them hands-on
experience in a real-world situation.

Team 8C Cares!
Independence Middle School
eighth grade students on Team
8C raised $595 in one week
and visited local businesses to
get donations to purchase
supplies that were put into 100
one-gallon bags and sent to
Navy Seals stationed in
Afghanistan.
This the fifth year Team 8C has
conducted a similar
community service project
around the Christmas holidays.
IMS Students Make Scarves To Help The
Needy To Stay Warm This Winter
A group of 25 Independence Middle School students stay after school every Tuesday
as part of the newly-formed Family and Consumer Science Club to participate in
community service projects.
The students recently made 25 fleece scarves to be distributed to needy in the area
through the South Hills Interfaith Ministries’ Clothes Closet and Food Pantry.
The students have also made ornaments for the IMS Cafeteria’s Christmas tree and
baked cookies for needy Bethel Park families.
NAMS Shops For SHIM
For the 15th year, Neil Armstrong Middle
School students purchased presents for the
South Hills Interfaith Ministries’ Angel
Emporium.
This year the students and staff raised more
than $8,000 and NAMS students shopped in
small groups to purchase presents for needy
South Hills families.
The students dropped their presents off at
SHIM to see how the Angel Emporium
positively impacts the South Hills.
Carnival Raises Over $4,500 For SHIM And
Adopt-A-Family
This year’s Neil Armstrong Middle School
Charity Carnival raised over $4,500 that was
shared between the South Hills Interfaith
Ministries and the Bethel Park Adopt-AFamily Program.
Students paid 25 cents to play a variety of
carnival games and take chances on several
raffles.
This was $1,000 more than was raised at last
year’s Carnival.
Grace Skalniak Wins
Third Grade Spelling Bee
William Penn Third Grader Grace Skalniak won the Third Annual
Bethel Park Third Grade Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Rotary Club of
Bethel Park. As this year’s winner, she received a $200 Toys R Us Gift
Card and the opportunity to compete against the winners of other
Rotary Spelling Bees at a Regional Rotary Spelling Bee to be held in
May.
Finishing in Second Place was Washington Third Grader Dylan Prindle
and in Third Place was Memorial Third Grader Hersh Kambli.
This year 55 spellers competed. The winning word was “apologize.”
Memorial Fourth Graders
Adopt A Marine

Corporal Bryan Rock as part of their Fourth Grade Pay-It-Forward
Program.
The students wrote letters to Lance Corporal Rock and sent care
packages for him to distribute to his fellow Marines who are currently
stationed in Yuma, Arizona.
When Lance Corporal Rock was home over the holidays, he stopped by
Memorial to thank the students for their caring gestures and answered
their questions about life as a Marine.

Foundation
The Bethel Park School District received a $5,000 grant from the Highmark Foundation’s
Creating a Healthy School Environment Grant Program to implement the Go, Slow, Whoa!
Program in all Bethel Park School District cafeterias.
The program is designed to promote healthy eating by making the best nutritional choices
from the foods that are available.
“Go” foods are “eat almost any time foods.”
“Slow” foods are “eat sometimes/less often foods.”
“Whoa!” foods are “once in a while/special occasion foods.”
Posters are hung in all school cafeterias and students will be able to participate in free food
samplings to better understand the concepts.
The grant was written by Food Service Director Joe Consolmagno and
IMS School Nurse Lori Kelley.
