WELCOME TO SPRING AT TRINITY
This year we continue our mission to bring a new diverse, thoughtprovoking and entertaining range of events to you. From adaptations
to originals, from interactive children’s shows to the very best in local
music and top-name comedians, this is a season to celebrate the arts
in the best possible way – live.
In addition, this is ‘Oscar Season’ and we have an array of exciting films
that I hope will appeal to everyone, ranging from Hollywood smash-hits
to fantastic international films. The work of the world’s most renowned
companies will be screened in high-definition, including mesmerising
shows from the Bolshoi Ballet and the National Theatre.
John Martin
Artistic Director
Although these screenings can provide incredible access to productions
from around the world, Trinity – at its very core – is a theatre. It’s a
place where the people of Kent and Sussex can laugh and cry together
and share experiences. It should spark debate and inspire dreams
and aspirations. Above all, it should give people the opportunity to
experience the sheer joy of sharing a space with performers. Theatres
have a special ability to help our towns become communities and I have
always been grateful for the opportunity to support Trinity in making
this happen.
As ever, none of this would be possible without the overwhelming
support that we continue to receive from our audiences, Friends,
volunteers, funders and sponsors and I always welcome your comments
and feedback. Please email me at [email protected]

RSC Live: Love’s Labour’s Lost
RSC Live: Love’s Labour’s Won
William Shakespeare’s sparkling comedy delights in
championing and then unravelling an unrealistic vow,
and mischievously suggests that the study of the
opposite sex is in fact the highest of all academic
endeavours. Only at the end of the play is the
merriment curtailed as the lovers agree to submit to
a period apart, unaware that the world around them
is about to be utterly transformed by the war to end
all wars.
Autumn 1918. A group of soldiers return from the
trenches. The world-weary Benedick and his friend
Claudio find themselves reacquainted with Beatrice
and Hero. As memories of conflict give way to a life of
parties and masked balls, Claudio and Hero fall madly,
deeply in love, while Benedick and Beatrice reignite
their own altogether more combative courtship.
Better known as Much Ado About Nothing,, the play is
performed under the title Love’s Labour’s Won.

Thu 16 Apr 7pm
Pulitzer Prize-winner Katherine Boo spent three years
in Annawadi recording the lives of its residents. From
her uncompromising book, winner of the National
Book Award for Non-Fiction 2012, David Hare has
fashioned a tumultuous play on an epic scale. India
is surging with global ambition, but their schemes
are fragile; global recession threatens the garbage
trade, and another slum-dweller is about to make an
accusation that will destroy herself and shatter the
neighbourhood.
Acclaimed playwright Tom Stoppard returns to the
National Theatre with his highly-anticipated new play
The Hard Problem, directed by Nicholas Hytner.
Hilary, a young psychology researcher at a brain
science institute, is nursing a private sorrow and a
troubling question at work, where psychology and
biology meet. If there is nothing but matter, what
is consciousness? This is ‘the hard problem’ Hilary
needs a miracle, and she is prepared to pray for one.

In this tale of a captain forced to sail the seas for eternity unless
released by the faithful love of a good woman, and the lonely
girl who longs to save him, Wagner created two unforgettable
characters operating near the limits of human emotion. Tim

ideal platform on which Bryn Terfel’s turbulent Dutchman and

Wed 28 Jan 8pm
Though only 14, every decision of Maria’s life has to conform to her church’s rigid interpretation
of the Bible. While taken with the idea of personal sacrifice, she is also intrigued by the ‘satanic’
temptations of music and boys, particularly classmate Christian and his gospel choir. Silver Bear
winner at Berlin Film Festival 2014, this precise and riveting drama about the stifling religious
upbringing of a young girl is leavened with dry humour and absurdist moments.
Citizenfour
Sun 1 Feb 5pm
15 | 113mins | Laura Poitras
When director Laura Poitras is emailed out of the blue by Citizen Four, aka defence analyst Edward
Snowden, she’s invited to chronicle the leak, and aftermath, of a scandal: the NSA’s relentless,
worldwide surveillance programme... This is bold, unblinking filmmaking – nothing less than a
living document of a global scandal straight from the whistleblower – which will keep you pinned
to your seat through sheer, shattering disbelief.
The Homesman
Sun 1 Feb 8pm
15 | 123mins | Tommy Lee Jones
In a cliché-reversing Western, a “true grit” Hilary Swank is charged with escorting three highly
disturbed young women eastward across the plains to “civilisation” and refuge. Tommy Lee Jones
plays an ageing rough diamond, who finds redemption when cajoled at gunpoint into helping Mary
Bee Cuddy (Swank) and her fragile cargo to find succour with Meryl Streep as a pastor’s wife.
Visually magnificent with never-ending horizons and stunning set-pieces.

and, ultimately, romance, starring Kevin Kline, Maggie Smith and Kristin Scott Thomas.

that fuels their animosities... This richly engrossing and ravishingly beautiful character study from
Turkish master Ceylan won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2014.

already decided. Gallienne, who belongs to his country’s prestigious Comédie-Française acting
troupe, milks his awkward upbringing for big laughs, playing the roles of both his younger self and
his elegant if somewhat imperious mother (in drag, of course!).

Town and Country Foundation & Trinity Gallery
Visual Arts Programme Jan-May 2015
A new year leaps into action with a season of diverse artwork in the Gallery.
Town and Country Foundation are pleased to welcome you to kick off the spring
season with Liam Rogers’ exciting installation combining multimedia film and
photography. We are delighted to be hosting Sue Luck’s first mixed media solo
installation show in February. She is known locally in Tunbridge Wells through
Saltmarsh’s Art shop, but not everyone knows she is an amazing artist herself.
Finally Lou Hodgkinson’s gorgeous lush and colourful paintings complete our
season. Her beautiful designs grace any wall in style. With painting, etching,
drawing, making and video and photography to be encountered in the work of
these three artists, we hope you will drop in and be enchanted in the gallery this
spring. For further information please do feel free to
contact [email protected]

Oddities
Tue 17 Feb - Sat 14 Mar
Sue Luck’s work explores ideas around the yearning for oddities.
She says of her work “I am roused by the concept of investigating
a moment of sensory satisfaction potentially derived from the
broken, the distorted, the deviated. I don’t need the moment to
be analysed or categorised. It is enough to sense it, produce it
and move on.”

Polytechnic (wood, metal, ceramics and plastic) majoring in
ceramics and metalwork. For the past 30 years she has worked
as a self employed decorator whilst continuing to create artworks
in variuos new mediums.
This exhibition is inspired by her trip to New Zealand and Australia

abstract works of natural formations.
Lou Hodgkinson
Fuelled by Colour
Tue 31st March – Sat 26th April
Lou Hodgkinson studied Graphic design and illustration at
Medway College of Art. Colours and patterns inspired by our
surroundings and everyday influences are especially prevalent
in her artwork. The designs she produces are a result of their
relationship with shape, space, form and the visual impact and
effect they have on themselves and us.
