order to use a Pesach kettle.
Kashering
The laws of koshering for Pesach are very
extensive. If anyone plans on kashering pots,
pans or utensils they should contact the Rabbi.
-- Only metal or wood utensils can be
kashered.
All kashering should be done by 11:56 am
Monday April 2.
-- Plastics, china, porcelain, Pyrex or enamel
articles should not be kashered.
-- The prevailing custom is not to kasher
glassware. In a case of great necessity, one
may kasher glassware by soaking it for three
consecutive 24 hour periods.
-- Towels and tablecloths that are laundered
well may be used for Pesach. It is preferable
not to kasher a tere'lyne tablecloth. Starch
should not be used on any tablecloth. Plastic
or vinyl tablecloths which were used for
chametz cannot be used for Pesach.
Ranges / Stovetops
-- An electric range is kashered by first
cleaning all areas well.
-- The burners are then turned on high for a few
minutes until they glow.
-- A gas range differs only in that the tripods
should be cleaned well, inserted into the
oven, and kashered together with the oven.
-- All the other areas of the range, including
the bibs, should be cleaned and covered with a
double layer of heavy duty aluminum foil.
Sinks / Counter Tops / Gadgets
-- Porcelain sinks cannot be kashered for
Pesach. Clean all areas of the sink, pour
boiling water over the sink, then cover with
contact paper. Dishes should be washed in a
dishpan and placed on a Pesach rack.
-- Stainless steel sinks can be kashered.
Prior to kashering, no hot chametz may be
poured into the sink for 24 hours.
Clean the entire sink well.
Boiling water from a Pesach pot is poured
directly over every part of the sink and drain.
The stove must have been kashered already in
-- For all sinks, boiling water should be poured
over the faucet and handles.
-- If you have a hot water dispenser on your
sink, you should pour hot water all over it, but
it should not be used on Pesach.
-- Separate Pesach drain covers and dishracks are also required.
-- All gadgets that are used with only cold
water may be cleaned and used for Pesach.
This includes water fountains, filtered water &
spouts, and the ice & water dispensers on a
refrigerator.
-- Ice cube trays need to be replaced for
Pesach.
-- Counter tops, tablecloths, drawers and
plastic high chair trays should be cleaned well
& covered. Metal high chair trays may be
kashered using the procedure for the stainless
steel sink.
-- All cabinets that you will be using for Pesach
should be covered with some kind of paper or
shelf liner after you have cleaned them.
-- Bathroom sinks need not be kashered.
-- New toothbrushes should be used.
Appliances
-- A plastic or porcelain dishwasher should not
be kashered for Pesach. For more information
about stainless steel dishwashers, please
contact the Rabbi.
-- Broilers, toasters and toaster-ovens cannot
be kashered.
-- A new hot water urn should be purchased for
Pesach.
-- A separate Pesach crock pot should be used
for Pesach. Separately sold “crock pot liners”
are acceptable for Pesach.
-- A new Shabbos blech should be purchased.
-- Warming Trays - If you wish to use your
regular warming tray on Pesach, it must be
clean and totally wrapped up with aluminum
foil. When wrapping, be certain that you are
not creating a safety hazard.
Refrigerators and freezers
-- Should be washed well, with special care for
the shelves and racks. Covering the shelves is
not necessary.
-- The box from the automatic ice maker
should be washed well before use. Ice from
the icemaker may be used on Pesach after the
unit has been cleaned.
How to Kasher your Oven
(for Pesach and all year long)
Regular & Continuous-Cleaning Oven and
Setting it up:
-- Before kashering your oven, all areas must
be clean.
-- Special care should be taken to clean the
door area of your oven BEFORE kashering.
-- Special care must be given to the racks,
particularly where the spokes meet. If the
racks are not totally clean, they cannot be
kashered.
-- Cleaning is best accomplished with an oven
cleaning caustic like "Easy Off". Remaining
dirt should be removed with a razor blade.
-- FINAL STEP for Kashering a Regular Oven:
After cleaning a regular oven, fill a clean
disposable aluminum pan with water, place it
in the oven and turn the oven on high for one
hour. If the oven has two coils (such as a top
coil for broil and a bottom coil for bake), each
one should be on for an hour each. After this
step, your regular oven will be kashered.
-- A continuous-cleaning oven should be
treated like a regular oven.
-- Convection ovens are very difficult to
kasher. If necessary, please speak to the
Rabbi.
-- Broiler pans cannot be kashered for Pesach.
If you wish to kasher the broiler part of your
oven, a new or disposable pan should be
purchased. Even if you are not kashering the
broiler, it must be cleaned thoroughly.
Self-Cleaning Ovens
-- A self-cleaning oven is kashered by running
it through the self cleaning cycle
-- Special care should be taken to clean the
inside of the door area and the inside of the
seal on your self-cleaning oven BEFORE
kashering.
-- It is recommended to thoroughly clean the
area beyond the seal, both on the door and on
the outside of the oven prior kashering.
-- After you run a self-clean cycle for 3 hours,
your oven should be kashered. The dirt inside
your oven should be reduced to ash and
carbonized residue. If any stains are left on
the door, manually clean the remnants.
-- If you have an older oven and the interior
surface of your oven is damaged or the coils
do not function properly, you may have a
problem kashering your oven effectively.
-- Microwave Ovens -As the technology of microwaves has changed
over the years, more and more Poskim agree
that they should not be kashered for Pesach.
However, if you must kasher your microwave,
this is the procedure:
-- To kasher a microwave oven, it should first
be thoroughly cleaned and not used for 24
hours.
-- A clean utensil filled with water is then
placed in the oven and the oven is turned on.
The water should boil for 15 minutes.
-- The floor of the microwave should then be
changed or covered with plastic wrap.
Cleaning For Pesach
In general, the purpose of cleaning is to find
recognizable pieces of Chametz. Scrubbing
nonfood-use areas or toys is not necessary.
Also keep in mind that cleaning any nonfood
area with Windex or another strong cleanser
makes the Chametz unedible and it is no
longer considered a problem.
-- All floors should be washed or vacuumed
well.
-- The bag in your vacuum should be emptied
by 11:56 am Monday April 2.
-- It is recommended to have a separate broom
and dustpan for Pesach.
-- Benchers from the rest of the year should be
put away for Pesach.
-- Books that are brought to the table during
the year should be checked for crumbs before
you bring them to the table on Pesach.
-- Candlesticks/Tray: Clean thoroughly. They
should not be put under hot water in a Kosher
for Pesach sink.
-- Jewelry: Jewelry that comes in contact with
food (like rings) should be cleaned before the
holiday.
-- If it is very difficult to clean behind your
refrigerator and freezer, it need not be moved.
-- All shelves and drawers should be cleaned
well before using them for Pesach. It is also a
good idea to reline those areas where food and
dishes are kept.
-- Garbage Cans inside the house should be
cleaned to make certain that there is no
Chametz on the inside or outside of the
cans.—
Garbage Cans outside the house – Remember
to make certain to eliminate any Chametz
that you may come into contact with on those
cans. It is not necessary to over-obsess while
cleaning the big cans.
Garbage cans with garbage chametz may be
placed on the curb ready for pickup by 11:56
am, Monday April 2. If you are able to
arrange for a garbage pick up for early Monday
morning or can bring the chametz garbage to a
public dumpster it is recommended but not
necessary.

kitchen,
please see the star-k website at:

Kitniot
-- Ashkenazic Jews do not eat any foods on
Pesach which contain Kitniot. This includes
all beans, soy, peas, corn, rice, string beans,
mustard, and sesame. Corn oil and corn syrup
are also not permitted.
-- The use of peanut oil is questionable.
-- Cottonseed oil is permitted.
-- There are products on the market for
Passover that contain Kitniot, especially those
imported from France and other European
countries. These Kitniot products are often in
the form of candy. Many of these products will
say "LeOchlay Kitniyos" on the packaging.
-- Note - many Israeli products marked
"Kosher for Passover" contain Kitniot since
Sephardim eat many of these foods.
-- Check the ingredients. Dextrose and
glucose are also generally corn derivatives.

vegetables should be sold with your chametz.

Bedikat Chametz
On Sunday night, April 1, after 8:23 PM,
Bedikat chametz is performed. After reciting
the bracha, a candle or flashlight should be
used to check the entire house. Please be
aware that this is not a symbolic search or
only a game to find the pieces of bread which
were scattered around the house. All areas
which may have contained chametz should be
searched. After the bedika, one should make
a verbal nullification of chametz in a
language that one understands.
Ta'anit Bechorim
Ta'anit Bechorim takes place this year on
Monday, April 2.
All male firstborn or fathers of
young male firstborn must fast or attend a
siyum.
A siyum will take place at our shul
immediately after Shacharit davening, which
starts at 6:40 AM.
Erev Pesach
Chametz should not be eaten after 10:41 am
on Monday morning, April 2nd. All chametz
must be disposed of by 11:56 am. After
burning the chametz, the final nullification of
the chametz is said. On Erev Pesach, no
matzoh products or baked products made with
matzoh meal should be eaten.
be used.
2 - Any room you did not clean must be closed
off (with tape or closed doors).
If you are going away on Sunday or Monday,
April 1 or 2:
1 - Make a bedikah with a bracha on Tuesday
night before you leave.
2- Burn your chametz at the proper time by
taking it with you to burn or giving it to
somebody to burn for you.
Sefirat HaOmer
There is a Mitzvah to count the Omer for
seven weeks, beginning on the second night of
Pesach. The Mitzah is to count both weeks and
days. One makes a Bracha each time they
count. If a person forgot to count at night, they
can count during the day the next day without
a Bracha, and continue making the Bracha the
following night. If a person omitted an entire
day (night and day), they continue counting
but without a Bracha.
Attached is a Sefirat HaOmer Calendar for 2007.
Cooking on Yom Tov
Buying chametz after Pesach
It is not permitted to prepare on one day
of Yom Tov for the next day of Yom Tov.
Therefore, food preparations should be started
after candle-lighting time on April 3 for the
second seder.
If a local grocery store is owned by Jews,
chametz should not be purchased there for 4-6
weeks after Pesach. The Rabbi will announce
which stores are acceptable in the coming
weeks to buy chametz from immediately after
Pesach .
The following week, Monday April 9th,
food preparations may be done after candlelighting time for that night’s Yom Tov meal.
Going Away for Pesach
If you are going away before Sunday or
Monday, April 1 or 2 and nobody will be
staying in your house over Pesach:
1 - Pick one small room in your house for your
bedikah (chametz search).
2 - Make a bedikah the night before you leave
without a bracha.
3 - Sign up on the Rabbi's chametz sale sheet.
If others will be staying in your house:
1 - You must clean all of the rooms that will
