PRESIDENT’S LETTER
One of the best part of being the president of the guild is getting the opportunity to
present fabulous programs. This September, Mary Lou Rankin, a designer, entrepreneur
and educator from San Diego is coming to the Park Bench Pattern Company to lead a
class on garment making. Mary Lou travels all over the U.S. teaching classes and
hosting trunk shows. At our event, you’ll get the chance to choose a pattern from her
pattern line and she’ll help you construct it. The class is $45 for members and $50 for
non-members and will be held at the Faith United Methodist Church in Phoenix,
September 12, 8:30am.
Our annual meeting will be held on Oct 31st. It will be at the Chandler Masonic Temple.
Everyone is invited. Please let Kay Newberg know if you would like to participate in the
“Rags to Riches” fashion show-- we’ll be taking something old and recycling it to
something new.
Inside the newsletter, I’ve got a quick story and some photos from the 2009 Conference
in Albuquerque. Here are some of the highlights in terms of decisions and
announcements at the Conference:
-- There was no “small” Chapter of the Year Award
-- The Louisville, Kentucky Chapter won the “medium” Chapter of the Year Award.
-- Two Chapters tied for “large” Chapter of the year: Seattle, Washington and Atlanta,
Georgia.
-- The Guild voted to keep the Regional Representative position, but it will be
restructured.
By the way check out the new lay out of the phoenix chapter web site.

2009 ASG Conference in Albuquerque
I just returned from the 2009 Conference held in Albuquerque, and let me tell you, it was a
blast. There was a ton of energy in the air, the classes were inspiring, and we got to pal around
with a few TV personalities.
Sue Hausmann from “America Sews” had a ton of ideas for simple, quick gifts. My head was swimming when I left her class.
Here’s just one example that I loved. She took an ordinary laundry
detergent box, and wrapped it in fabric to make a sweet-smelling
little sewing box. Perfect size for notions and a really inexpensive
way to show a little creativity in a gift.
Martha Pullen, who is best known for christening gowns, kept us all in stitches both at the
lunch on Friday and in class. Who would have thought this quite soft spoken lady on TV was
so full of excitement and energy? She had more stories to share than I can remember.
The fashion show was delightful. Honestly, I don’t know how some of these ladies found time
to make some of the garments shown. From coats to the 50 styles of dresses -- everything was
fabulous. We were also treated to the movie Valentino the Last Emperor.
The vendor’s booths were full of sewing gadgets for the novice and professional. Just when
you thought you saw everything the next day seemed to bring something new. With over 65
booths to chose from I was up for the challenge.
We had a lot of fun, but it wasn’t just all about us. We also donated over 5,100 pillow cases to
the Ronald McDonald House. The spokesperson told us that the kid’s faces really light up
when they get a little gift. The children use them for putting toys in, carrying personal items,
and really just hauling around whatever they can find.
Next year’s Conference will be held in Atlanta, Georgia at the Hilton Hotel August 5-8,
2010. For 2011, we’ll be going to Los Angeles CA, August 11-14. ASG conference is uplifting
and exciting you leave with thoughts of what to do next and how to find the time. I encourage
all of you to go at least one time or another.

GREETINGS to those who have transferred to our chapter.
A NOTE FROM YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD GROUP COORDINATOR
SUE CARLSON
Well members, you did it again. Another group has just formed in the North West Valley and
guess what, it will be an evening group. It will be led by Erica Doyle who has a wonderful
sewing studio on Union Hills and the group will meet at her studio.
Erica is a very vivacious lady who teaches not only children but young adults and moms to sew. Many years ago,
she taught at one of our workshops so she is not new to teaching. She has also worked retail selling sergers and
sewing machines so she is a wealth of knowledge.
The new group will meet at the Sewin Assylum at 8805 W. Union Hills Dr., Suite 202 the 4th Tuesday of each
month from 7:00 – 9:00 and the first meeting will be September 22nd. Her first program will be a demo on
Lingerie and Lace. Look in the center section for the group and upcoming programs.
We hope that this time slot will appeal to many members who work and live in the North West Valley. You asked
for a group over there and here it is. Even if you don’t work but live in the area, hopefully you will help support
this wonderful new group.
Want to get involved but don’t have a lot of time?

From The Newsletter Editor…
I have enjoyed being the news letter editor for the ASG Phoenix Chapter; it is hard to believe two years is
gone by so quickly. I would like to thank you for the opportunity to learn so much about the chapter and the
members. The cooperation from the neighborhood group was wonderful and the articles remarkable insightful.
I look forward to continue participating in the ASG functions in the years ahead. I wish the best to the new
ASG board members.
Keep sewing next to your heart!

ASG Announces the Recipient for the 2010 Community Service Project
The American Sewing Guild is proud to announce the selection of the U.S. Troops Drawstring Bag as our 2010
national community service project. A project of Operation Care Package, a non-profit organization that
receives, fills and mails the drawstring bags to deployed service men and women from all braches of the
armed forces. You can learn more about them at www.operationcarepackages.org.
Please note: ASG headquarters will not be receiving or shipping the bags. We will not have a drop off area for
them during the 2010 conference. The bags are to be mailed directly to Operation Care Package and can be
shipped at any time to:
Operation Care Package
611 Wilcox St.
Joliet, IL. 60435
ASG Members, please report the number of bags sent to your chapter representative who will be maintaining a
count for ASG. A drawstring bag pattern (created for this project) has been designed by Laura Martell of The
Creative Thimble and you can access it from a link on the Community Service page of the ASG website or at:
http://www.thecreativethimble.com/FreePatterns/US%20Troop%20Bag.pdf.
Operation Care Package has requested that we enclose a note of appreciation thanking the recipient for their
service. Once again, our friends at ScrapSmart have stepped up to support our project by designing a special
appreciation label and a card that can be used to include a personal note with your bag(s). As soon as this is
available, members will be alerted and a link will be available from our website.

“Teach Another Generation”
My name is Merrianne Geisdorf and I have been the Neighborhood Group Leader for the Mesa Saturday Group
for almost two years. I have been sewing since I was 11, and have enjoyed sewing, talking about sewing and encouraging people to sew for years. I have also enjoyed sewing with friends, my grandchildren and daughters.
In April of this year, a young woman named Nyla attended our Saturday group. She had printed out a copy of the
page in the
newsletter that lists all of the NG meetings and decided to attend ours. I talked to her after the meeting and asked
her if she had any friends her age that would like to get together to sew as I have wanted to get a younger group
started. After all, our motto is “Teach Another Generation.” I had made up some business cards with my e-mail
address and phone number on it as well as some information about ASG. I gave her one.
About 10 days later, I got an e-mail from Lauren, a friend of Nyla’s who wanted to know if I was serious about
starting a younger group. She said that there was a group of fifteen to twenty 20 – 30 year olds who wanted to
learn to sew and/or improve their skills. The group calls themselves The Geek Girls and many had only met
online at Meetup.com. I was thrilled!! I said absolutely and we went from there.
We finally decided to meet at Sally’s Fabrics on Main and had our organizational meeting on May 20. We had 15
yes’ and 4 maybes. We had 12 actually attend. Charlotte Sconone came and we discussed the advantages of being a
member of the American Sewing Guild as well as projects to make, skill levels, times to meet, etc.
We had our first sewing meeting on June 20 and 13 came. They made grocery bags. Some are absolute beginners
and some have been sewing for a while. Their skill levels vary, but they are fun and eager and had a great time.
Almost everyone went home with a finished project and we got pictures. Three of them didn’t have sewing
machines yet, so we brought extras for them to use. Four ladies from my original group as well as Charlotte came
to help. We were all kept busy!
They decided to make skirts with elastic waists for their second sewing project. Judy Henzler led that meeting as
Charlotte and I attended the ASG Annual Conference in Albuquerque. I understand it was another great meeting
and many finished their skirts.
Lauren was not able to attend that meeting, but she said she saw several from the group the next day and they
were wearing their skirts.
We are having our third meeting after I finish this article and we are making pillowcases for Ronald McDonald
House. We have been meeting the third Saturday of each month at Sally’s Fabrics. The meeting starts at 2 p.m. We
can stay until about 5:45 p.m. as the store closes at 6 p.m. Sally’s has been very accommodating and has a great
meeting area complete with cutting table and irons set up for our use.
While I had been wanting to get a younger group going, I hadn’t actually done anything to get one started. I am
grateful that Nyla took the time to look us up and attend our meeting in April. This has been an enjoyable
experience and one that I hope will continue for a long time. I encourage you all to “Teach Another Generation.”
It is rewarding and challenging. And if you’re in the area of Main and Stapley the third Saturday of the month, stop
in to Sally’s Fabrics and say hi. We’re in the large room on the left behind the
cutting tables.

Annual Meeting Rags to Riches Fashion Show
Well, by looking at the last quarters group meetings I see the “Go Green” movement to recycle, reuse, or reengineer items to be useful in a new way is already being explored in many of our groups. I hope many of those
items end up on our runway at the annual meeting on October 31, 2009. Did you read the National Notions?
There too were wonderful ideas for recycling fashions and finding barging fabric at resale shops. Just this week in
a newsletter from Quilter’s World, the writer shared a purse she made from a bedspread purchased at Goodwill
and she embellished it with buttons from her button jar.
This year at the annual meeting we want a dazzling fashion show of your experiences in the
recycling and refashioning efforts. We sewers are inquisitive people and very inventive and
resourceful. Share your efforts and inspire others. We will be sharing some tips with you to keep you moving
along in the “Go Green” efforts. One place to look is www.About.com/DIY
fashion.
Let me know you will be joining in the festivities.

The History of ‘APRONS’!!
I don’t think our kids know what an apron is.
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because
she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less
material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the
oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for
cleaning out dirty ears.
From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and
sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when
the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons
wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood
were brought into kitchen in that apron.
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.
In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture
that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and
the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time
apron' that served so many purposes.
REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to
cool.
Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now
trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.
* I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron!!!! *
