FRESH ASPIRATIONS
In revealing our new “face,” we also renamed our home
the Hubbard Street Dance Center. With this name emblazoned on our façade, we send the message that
something exciting is happening at the corner of Jackson

choreography in contemporary dance today and the
nurturing of dance artists at all levels.

during this long and vital period of growth.
Following an extensive search, we were fortunate to
find our next administrative leader in Jason D. Palmquist.
Joining us in May, Jason has brought a wealth of experience in producing and presenting dance, having spent
several years as executive director of the Washington
Ballet and 12 years prior at the Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts, where he directed dance programming.
In the short time he’s been with HSDC, Jason has introduced new ways of thinking about our institution that
have already begun to affect our marketing, development
and programming and provided us with new energy
and perspective on innovations that look to the future.

LEADING THE EVOL
Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (HSDC) continued its role as one of the country’s leading contemporary dance
companies by:
■
Creating four world premieres with world-class American and international choreographers Jorma Elo,
Lar Lubovitch, Toru Shimazaki and Jim Vincent
■
Undertaking innovative, cross-disciplinary collaboration with the world-class artists of the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra (CSO)
COLLABORATIVE CONVERGENCE
In January 2007, HSDC and the CSO performed From All Sides, a new work by Jorma Elo danced to a new composition
by Mark-Anthony Turnage, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. This was the fourth HSDC-CSO collaboration.
“The score…[was] different than what I might have gone with naturally,
but going into that unknown territory of modern music has been a great
experience.”

NURTURING FUTUR
HSDC sought out exceptional emerging choreographic talents to nurture new artistic visions and bring dance to
the stage. Artistic Director Jim Vincent cultivated such talent from inside the current HSDC artistic family, through
the 6th annual “Inside/Out” Choreographic Workshop, and from outside the company, through the 9th National
Choreographic Competition.
Two new works entered the repertoires of the main and second companies through this process, which
further developed the choreographic skills of HSDC dancers Alejandro Cerrudo and Brian Enos. In addition, an
existing work by Janice Lancaster, one of the National Choreographic Competition winners, was acquired for the
second company.

This season, HS2 commissioned veteran Chicago choreographer Harrison McEldowney to

ENHANCING EDUCA
HSDC’s Education & Community Programs are dynamic, long-range, collaborative partnerships through which teaching
artists and educators plan, teach and create exciting and meaningful integrated curriculum that challenges students
and takes learning to new levels in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS).
Annual program evaluations and research conducted by nationally renowned dance education specialist
Dr. Gail Burnaford of Florida Atlantic University helped HSDC continuously improve our programming.
“Thanks for coming and performing for us. I saw how you jumped like a
frog. It looked like you could fly like a bird. All of your dances were great.”

PROGRAMS
Professional Development Workshops
Fun and dynamic workshops taught educators the
power of movement to develop student potential by
linking the creative processes of choreography and
writing/reading.
Moving In New Directions (MIND)
After attending professional development workshops,
classroom teachers were teamed with HSDC teaching
artists to integrate dance into the curriculum, creating
in-school movement activities that enabled students to
relate dance to core curriculum subjects.
The Focus Schools Initiative (FSI)
■
HSDC’s innovative, yearlong partnership with three
CPS schools
■

educators with ongoing professional development
and intensive curricular planning
■
Daily, in-school dance activities led by HSDC
teaching artists
■

and partnership honing HSDC’S educational
programming methodology
After-School Programs
HSDC provided at-risk students from several elementary schools with after-school programs.
“The sessions were outstanding because you modeled how to integrate art
into the learning process. My students are more engaged and focused in the
classroom now, and much more enthused. I’ve learned to use the power of
dance to transform my teaching. Thank you!”

LEADERSHIP
TRANSITION AND GROWTH
2006–07 was a time of great transition and growth in the leadership of both the artistic and administrative
sides of the company. Over the course of the year, Artistic Director Jim Vincent and Executive Director Jason
Palmquist have assembled a leadership team to drive the work that has made Hubbard Street Dance Chicago
an international standard bearer and set the company’s direction as it approaches its 30th Anniversary Season.

Gail Kalver made an indelible impact during her years at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and her
influence surely will remain long after the 2006–07 season, her final one with the company.
“After devoting nearly 23 years to Hubbard Street, this feels like the right time for me to embark
upon a new adventure. I have loved the company since the first time I saw it and am proud of what
we’ve accomplished together. I am eternally grateful to the wonderful dancers, board and staff that
I have had the honor to work with, as well as for the support of so many wonderful funders, who have believed
in us and fueled the company’s growth for so long.”
Since joining HSDC in 1984, Kalver has been a significant leader in the Chicago arts community and the national

Kalver has received the Chicago Dance Coalition’s 1988 Ruth Page Award and was recognized by Today’s Chicago

generosity and clarity of leadership. We truly worked side by side for the
past six years and it has been my daily pleasure and privilege.”
