FROM THE RABBI’S DESK
Last month we spoke about Chanukah & Thanksgiving; this month I’d like to speak to you about the miracle
of Chanukah - alone.
According to our tradition, the way to publicize the miracle of Chanukah is by placing our Chanukiya (the
Menorah) in the window, so that everyone who passes by can see the light. Our sages wanted us to show
everyone that miracles do happen. That’s why our Rabbis commanded us to make sure that we share those
miracles with others as well.
Chanukah is the time to light those candles and to show the rest of the world how we shine and how proud
we are of our Jewish tradition and heritage, and to make sure that everyone is aware of the miracle of Chanukah,
and how Hashem (G-d) saved the day once again.
I’m sure that we all believe in the greatest miracle of the modern era - the State of Israel. Israel is constantly
being attacked by Hamas and others, thousands of rockets are being fired into civilian neighborhoods, nurseries,
hospitals and schools, as we always hope and pray for peace (Sim Shalom - Shalom Rav - Oseh Shalom)… and
somehow we’re still here!
Meanwhile, on November 27th at night, we need to light the candles and show the rest of the world the
miracle of Chanukah and the miracle of the State of Israel.
Here are some facts about the state of Israel that we should be very proud of:
Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East.
Israel has the highest ration of university degrees to the population in the world.
Israel has more museums per capita than any other country.
Israel has the highest percentage of home computers per capita in the world.
Israel is the only country in the world that entered the 21st century with a net gain in number of trees.
Israel produces more scientific papers per capita than any other nation by a large margin - 109 per 10,000
people, as well as one of the highest per capita rates of patents filed.
The list really goes on and on and on!
I would like to ask you to always keep Israel in your thoughts and prayers. Please support Israel in any way
you can - by planning a trip to Israel, by purchasing Israel bonds, by buying products that are made in Israel or by
supporting Israeli organizations. Maybe this year we can support the wounded soldiers and help those who are in
need.
Every Chanukah we have the opportunity to reconnect spiritually with our Yiddishkeit and with our brothers
and sisters around the world and to make this world a little better than the day before. (Tikun Olam).
And may we be a shining light to G-d, our people and to the rest of the world.

FOCUS ON SISTERHOOD
HIDDUR MITZVAH
What does it mean? The concept of Hiddur
Mitzvah – beautifying or embellishing a Mitzvah – is
derived from Exodus 15:2. “This is my G-d, and I will
glorify Him.” When Rabbi Ishmael asks how should
we glorify G-d, he answers, “I shall prepare before
G-d a beautiful Lulav, a beautiful Sukkah, beautiful
Tzitzit, beautiful Tefillin, a beautiful Shofar, a beautiful
Torah scroll.” The enhancement of our actions and
ritual objects, makes the performance of Mitzvoth even
more meaningful. We find in Mishneh Torah the
obligation to take care of your body – we must realize
that our body belongs to the Creator. We learn about
Shmirat Briyut & the Mitzvah of Shmirat Haguf - the
guarding of and preventive care of our bodies. We
learn from the great Maimonedes that “Bodily health
and wellbeing are part of the path to G-d.”
Thus, on December 3rd, - the 6th day of
Chanukah - at 12:00 P.M. - in light of the above – our
Sisterhood meeting will host Jeffrey Landsberg, a
certified, licensed physical therapist from North Shore
Long Island Jewish Hospital Health System. His topic
will be “Exercise to help you stay fit and young!” A
topic that is of great importance for all of us. There will
be handouts and time for questions and answers from
Mr. Landsberg. In addition and in conjunction with
this, we shall also present parts of the new Women’s
League for Conservative Judaism program - “Wellness
& Learning” network program. We shall dwell on the
month of Kislev and the special program theme of
“Resilience : A Learned Skill” as well as the wonderful
theme of Debbie Friedman’s “Mi Sheberach – Help us
to be Resilient.” We also remind you to share your
special Chanukah memories with us – we want to hear
yours and want to tell you ours – and you will make it
very special if you have some tangible artifacts. And
then of course it’s still Chanukah - bring a dairy
sandwich and we shall serve Latkes and …….. Don’t
miss this interesting and busy Sisterhood meeting! Of
course, gentlemen are invited and welcomed.
Once again we thank Mollie Alkana for a
wonderful and inspiring morning. Mollie, as only
Mollie can, gave us insight and explanations of the life
of Bernard Malamud from the book about her father
written by Janna Malamud Smith – “My Father is a
Book.” I hope you were as inspired to read this
fascinating book as we were. Todah Rabah, Mollie.
Hold these Dates!! January will be a busy
month. On Sunday, January 5th, we shall have our Paid
Up Membership Party! Admission is paid up dues so
be sure to see Elaine Abend, Membership Vice
President.
And on Sunday, January 26th, again it will be
“Oy Vay Bingo,” led by our own Mildred Pelton.
Don’t miss either event.
We are grateful and happy to see that Elaine
Abend has recovered and is well – we wish you only
the best – and remember we all need you.
We wish Bernice Mandell a very speedy and
complete recovery. We hope to welcome you back
soon.
As we conclude the secular year, we wish all of
you good health, happiness and our thanks to G-d for
allowing us to reach this season.

SISTERHOOD POLICY
The Sisterhood is essentially an organization of
volunteers who give countless hours of service as
Mitzvoth. To receive donor credit for services
negates the nature of this Judaic concept and distorts
its purpose.
1. We give donor credit only for monetary
contributions.
2. Yahrzeit, Memorial or Kaddish contributions
cannot be accepted by Sisterhood - they must be
donated to the Rego Park Jewish Center.

Scholarship. She performed in the Kennedy Center,
National Gallery in Canada, 92nd Street Y, Israel
Embassy in Washington and in Europe.
Assembled at a death camp, a cadre of printers,
artists and chiselers is tasked with counterfeiting
currencies to weaken Allied economies. But will the
Jewish master forger, Salomon Sorowitsch choose
between abetting the Nazis and saving his own skin facing an ethical quandary.
This exciting drama (2007) is in English - one
hour and 38 minutes long.

SHEMOT 1.1 - 6.1 EXODUS
We end Bereshit (Genesis) with Parashat
Vayechi, “Jacob on his deathbed blessed the two sons
of Joseph, Ephraim and Manasseh.” He also gave
blessings to his other sons, foretelling the destinies of
their descendants. He died - Joseph and his brothers
brought Jacob’s body back to Canaan to the family
burial ground bought by Abraham when Sarah died.
The sons, Reuven, Simeon, Levi, Judah,
Zebulon, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Joseph
and Benjamin, remained in Egypt. When Joseph was
dying he asked his brothers to “take his bones back to
Canaan when they finally went out of Egypt.”
Four hundred years elapsed from Jacob’s death
to the birth of Moses and the Exodus.
Parashat Shemot - “New kings came in Egypt that
knew not Joseph.”
Over the many years the
descendants of Jacob multiplied greatly. “The
Pharaohs enslaved them with harsh labor. The Hebrew
midwives were ordered to throw the Israelite boys in
the Nile, but to save the girls. A son was born to a
Levite woman, Yochebed. The child was beautiful.
She put him in a basket, hiding him for three months,
then setting him at the Nile riverbank. He was found
and adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter, naming his Moses.
His sister Miriam observed this, and offered to get him
a nurse. After three months, Moses was given to
Pharaoh’s daughter.
When Moses grew up he saw his kinfolk being

beaten, and struck down the Egyptian. Moses fled, for
Pharoah would kill him. He came to the land of
Midian. He met and married the priest of Midian’s
daughter Zipporah. A son was born named Gershom.
In the land Moses saw a burning bush not consumed.
He encountered G-d - was commanded to appear
before Pharaoh “you shall free my people the
Israelites, from Egypt.”
The Lord sent Aaron to meet Moses and together
they went to Pharaoh. “Let my people go said the
Lord, the G-d of Israel.” “Who is the Lord that I
should heed him and let Israel go? I do not know the
Lord nor will I let Israel go.”
Haftarat Isaiah (27.6 - 28.13, 29.22-23) - “In days to
come Jacob shall strike root. Israel shall sprout and
blossom, the face of the world shall be covered with
fruit. Did he suffer as others suffered? Shall Jacob’s
sin be purged away - the only price for removing his
guilt. He makes the alter stones like shattered blocks
of chalk. No sacred post left standing, fortified cities
lie desolate, women make fires with broken boughs.
They are a people without understanding. Their
creator will deny them grace.”

REVIEW
Author Saul Silas Fathi came back by popular
request to lecture on “Saladin - the Crusades and the
Jews,” on October 20th. This event was chaired by
Charles Lehat.
The Crusades were initiated in the name of
religion by Pope Urban II in 1095, to reclaim the Holy
Land from Muslims. It began with the Massacre of
Jews and slaughtered Muslims in their native lands. It
ended with unimaginable death tolls on all sides.
The first Crusade succeeded to capture Jerusalem,
with the old city deep with the blood of Muslims and
Jews, because the Arab world was not unified. Years
later, Saladin, the Sultan of Egypt, Syria, Arabia and
Mesopotamia, united the Arabs and defeated the
crusaders. Saladin lives on as a symbol of hope for the
Arabs.
Richard I of England led the third Crusade. He is
the epitome of chivalry, the knight bravely fighting for
his kingdom and church. He negotiated a treaty with
Saladin - the treaty of Ramla in 1192, giving Jerusalem
to the Muslims, but open to Christian pilgrimages.
Saladin and Richard never met, but sent each other
gifts, tokens of respect.

ALERT
TEST YOUR CARBON MONOXIDE
ALARMS & SMOKE ALARMS
A recent incident told to me by a congregant
prompted me to write this - to alert everyone to the
urgency of checking not only your smoke alarm but
your carbon monoxide alarm as well.
Some alarms are dual types which incorporate
both a smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm in
one unit. Also, they can either “chirp” or “talk”. In this
case, the “talking” alarm loudly said, “Carbon
Monoxide - Get Out!” and awoke our member from a
sound sleep in the early morning hours. Knowing that
carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless and tasteless
gas, she immediately called the Fire Department who
responded quickly and found the problem emanated in
the basement of her building, which houses dozens of
tenants. The problem was corrected and thank G-d, life
went on. A much more serious result was avoided only
because our member knew the danger carbon monoxide
presents and she took action quickly, which prevented
this incident from having a much more serious outcome
than losing a few hours of sleep.
On November 3rd, daylight savings time ended
and we all turned our clocks back one hour. In the fall
and also in the spring, when we turn our clocks ahead
one hour - the Fire Department urges us to check our
Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms to insure that
they are working properly and to insert another battery
if needed.
The most important thing to remember is even in
fall and winter, never sleep in a room without a window
being open at least one inch - even if it is from the top.
Fresh air will never kill you - it may save your life. In
the warmer months, when using an air conditioner, a
window in another room (a bathroom or kitchen) should
be open an inch so that there is always fresh air
circulating in your home.

T’AI CHI CLASS NEWS
We will not be meeting during the month of
December 2013; we plan on resuming at the beginning
of 2014.
We of the T’ai Chi group have instilled the
virtues of keeping fit by practicing good health habits for example, getting enough sleep, walking instead of
riding for short distances (three to five blocks),
performing T’ai Chi exercises, getting flu shots, and
socializing with others.
I’ve come across an important article I’d like to
share with you - “Seven flu-fighting foods.”
1. Tomatoes are rich in vitamin C.
2. Carrots are most rich in beta-carotene which your
body uses to ward off respiratory infections.
3. Tea (black, green or white) contains naturally
occurring compounds that help reduce the risk of
flu.
4. Yogurt - contains probiotics (valuable bacteria) to
strengthen the flora in your stomach and your
immune system.
5. Almonds - A rich source of vitamin E; it helps the
body ward off infections.
6. Black-eyed peas - rich in zinc and other trace
minerals which helps keep your immune system in
working order.
7. Mushrooms - a nutritional powerhouse helping your
body ward off viral infections.
Keep healthy and fit. Have a Happy Chanukah
and a “Good and Healthy” 2014.

SPENDING THE WINTER
IN FLORIDA??
BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
At our December 20th meeting we will be
discussing The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout.
Elizabeth Strout is the author of “The New York
Times” bestseller Olive Kitteridge for which she was
awarded the Pulitzer Prize, and the national bestseller
Abide With Me. Her Amy and Isabelle won “The Los
Angeles Times” Art Seidenbaum Award. She lives in
Maine and New York City.
The Burgess Boys is the story of an ordinary
family. It recalls how childhood trauma touches all of
us in different ways and how disparaging comments
carelessly made to a loved one can leave a lifelong
impact. It is a novel of character rather than plot, of
introspection rather than action.
The author is a gifted storyteller with insight into
the human heart. She is noted for her skillful writing
and the book is written in beautiful prose.

SUNDAY BREAKFAST CLUB &
LEARN-IN WITH THE RABBI
This past month we began a study of the Prophets,
starting with Moses, who was considered the ultimate
prophet, and moving on to Joshua, chosen to lead the
people into Israel, and who passed on the Oral Law
from Moses.
Prophets were believed to not only see into the
future, but to be G-d’s spokesmen to each of their
generations. They were role models for holiness.
Our thanks to Charles Lehat, who filled in for the
Rabbi on two occasions, leading a discussion on a broad
range of the Mitzvoth. We not only gained a deeper
understanding of each Mitzvah, but why it is important
for us to perform them in our daily lives so as to attain
spiritual elevation.
We look forward to seeing you on future Sundays.
