Dear Parishioners,
“We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes
we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics.
This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in
politics by offering the best of themselves so that the
leader can govern.” - Pope Francis, 9/16/13
In this election year, I would like to return to a
topic I presented in this space four years ago, then also in
the context of a national election. I will devote a number
of columns to this subject because I believe it bears
repeating.
My words will be drawn from a document
originally published by the United States Conference of
Catholic Bishops in 2008: Forming Consciences for
Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility
from the Catholic Bishops of the United States. It was
proposed as a teaching document on the political
responsibility of Catholics. Certainly, the bishops affirm,
Catholics are not exempt from participating in the political
forum, and the Holy Father in the quote above, reiterates
the obligation to be politically involved not just as citizens,
but specifically as Catholics. We cannot leave our Catholic
identity aside as we mark our ballots. We must form our
consciences guided by the truths and values of our faith if
Catholics are to, in the words of the bishops, contribute to
civil and respectful public dialogue. We must therefore
shape [our] choices in the coming election in the light of
Catholic teaching. Our contribution to political dialogue
and decision-making should be a Catholic contribution.
(The entire text can be accessed at www.usccb.org, and
searching Faithful Citizenship.)
The bishops begin by recognizing that we are both
faithful Catholics and American citizens, and that there
should never be any conflict between the two identities.
Indeed, one should inform and enrich the other. The bishops
acknowledge that as A mericans, we are also blessed with
religious liberty which safeguards our right to bring our
principles and moral convictions into the public arena.
These Constitutional freedoms need to be both exercised
and protected, as some seek to mute the voices or limit the
freedoms of religious believers and religious institutions.
Catholics have the same rights and duties as others to
participate fully in public life. The Church through its
institutions must be free to carry out its mission and
contribute to the common good without being pressured
to sacrifice fundamental teachings and moral principles.
Give that a second reading, because the values of
religious freedom and the commitment to a correctly
formed conscience are challenged today. Catholics, and
all believers, cannot be second-class citizens in an ever
more aggressively secular society. Our values about the
September 18, 2016
sanctity of the family, the essential nature of marriage,
the dignity of every human person, especially the poor,
and the sacredness of each human life might be
unwelcome in some quarters or politically inconvenient
for some in public office, but these values are not
granted by the state and do not derive their authority
from the prevailing winds of popular sentiment. They
originate in our Creator, who wrote them into the very
fabric of our humanity in Natural Law, and as such are
non-negotiable. They are needed now as never before.
The document goes on The Church's obligation
to participate in shaping the moral character of society
is a requirement of our faith. It is a basic part of the
mission we have received from Jesus Christ, who offers
a vision of life revealed to us in Sacred Scripture and
Tradition.
That is worthy of note when social
commentators or political pundits relegate our Catholic
faith and its values, and our voices as concerned
citizens, to the status of the bystander, an observer of
the political process but not a participant in what is at
the heart of our American democracy: our political
dialogue. Essential to our Baptismal call is the mission
to bring Christ’s gospel to the world. “Y ou are to be
my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and
Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts, 1:8)
America, from sea to shining sea and beyond, qualifies.
The bishops candidly acknowledge the
controversy: Some question whether it is appropriate
for the Church to play a role in political life. However,
the obligation to teach about moral values that should
shape our lives, including our public lives, is central to
the mission given to the Church by Jesus Christ.
Moreover, the United States Constitution protects the
right of individual believers and religious bodies to
participate and speak out without government
interference, favoritism, or discrimination. Civil law
should fully recognize and protect the Church's right,
obligation, and opportunities to participate in society
without being forced to abandon or ignore its central
moral convictions. Our nation's tradition of pluralism is
enhanced, not threatened, when religious groups and
people of faith bring their convictions and concerns
into public life. Indeed, our Church's teaching is in
accord with the foundational values that have shaped
our nation's history: ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness.’
I ask you to give serious consideration to the
words of our bishops. I will pursue this subject in
future columns. I do so not out of any personal agenda,
but out of my fundamental commitment as your pastor

Stewardship Reflection
In Jesus’ parable of the Unjust Steward, we encounter a
financial manager who has wasted his master’s wealth
and faces dismissal from his position. To overcome the
crisis confronting him, the steward reduces some very
considerable debts owed by poor neighbors to his master
in order to help them out. Though the steward has sinned
against God and his master by squandering what belongs
to someone else, both the prudent way in which he goes
about resolving the crisis coupled with relieving people
who are in need can be seen as a way to better steward
the gifts entrusted to us by God. Although good stewards
today acknowledge that they may never use their God
given gifts in a way that completely conforms to the
demands of the Gospel, a commitment to using their gifts
with prudence and for the purpose of helping their
neighbors wins God’s favor.
The dishonest manager in today’s parable knew how to
manipulate money to his own advantage. But the
Gospel warns that no one can serve both God and
money. Which do I serve? Is my stewardship such that
anyone can tell?
