“Days of Our Lives”
By Alan Talbott, President
n the long running soap
opera “Automotive Days
Of Our Lives” the
patriarch of Jaguar, the Ford
Motor Company, has added yet
another twist to the story. Bill
Ford has stepped down as CEO
and turned operational duties over
to a guy familiar with turning
companies around namely, Alan
Mulally. Mr. Mulally, the former
head of Boeing, has the background
and skills to do the cost cutting
that is probably necessary to make
Ford profitable. What form that
will be and how many divisions
survive remains to be seen. I do
think, however, it would be
detrimental to Ford to unload
Jaguar. They need the nameplate.
We will see how this plays out.

accommodating hosts and thanks to
all who brought dishes. This is the
type of event that makes AJS such
a great club!
Martini night at Fernbank was
also well attended. Most folks ate
the catered dinner, listened to the
live music and sipped martinis till
and during the IMAX movie. The
IMAX experience is always
enjoyable with ancient Greece for
the theme this time. Not only was
the photography spectacular but
the special effects were at least
equal to the photography. Several
of our members are heading to
Greece this fall and certain
locations in the movie were stops
they intend to make. A lovely
evening with friends.

AJS Annual
Concours d’Elegance
Nalley Jaguar , October 7, 2006

By Alan Talbott, President
his year, in a complete
departure from the norm,
AJS will hold its Concours
d’Elegance at an exciting new
venue; Nalley Jaguar in Roswell.
Nalley has kindly agreed to open
their facility to us on Saturday
(please note the Saturday show day
instead of our usual Sunday) to
hold what is always a great display
of the Jaguar marques. In using
this location we will get a highly
visible spot on a main artery in
Atlanta plus the entire front of the
dealership and showroom to
display Jags and perhaps attract a
number of visitors, which we
haven’t been able to do in other
spots around town. Also, in
another complete departure from
norm Dick Thyer, Wayne Harris
and Bob Daley have created the
most unique set of trophies that
have ever been used at a car show.
We believe you will be delighted to
have one of these on display in the
home or office. All we need to
make this event work is you and
you Jag(s). If you can only make
one more event this year make it
this one.
Registration will begin at 10:00
AM; car preparation will end at
12:30 PM, and judging will
commence at 1:30 PM. After the
completion of judging, trophies
will be presented for all competing
classes as well as the “People’s
Choice” and John Steen Awards.
All entrants will also receive an
award commemorating their
participation in the 2006
Concours. The rules will basically
be the same as in past years.
Again, all cars entered in the
judged classes must be driven to
the show. Any car trailored to the
Concours grounds will be placed in
the Touring Class. The following
scoring system stipulates the
number of points required for
specific awards:
Place
First
Second
Third
Required Points
94.00 to 100.00
87.00 to 93.75
80.00 to 86.75
In addition to the regular judged
classes, we will continue the
practice instituted a few years ago
with the Touring Class. The
Touring Class allows Jaguar
owners to enter without being
judged under normal Concours
rules. Sometimes members do not
enter the regular Concours because
of their perceived hassle in
preparing their cars for a Concours
judged event (although this is the
perfect excuse for giving your Cat,
at least, a once a year thorough
cleaning); others have older,
unrestored or ‘rough’ cars that
may not be Concours ready, but
would be a delight for our
members to see and experience.
Now there is no reason not to
enter your Jag – members can
even enter different cars in both
the judged and non-judged
categories.
If you are familiar with Nalley’s
location you know there are
restaurants up and down the road
but nothing within walking
distance and once at the show you
may not want to leave or can’t do

id October in the mountains of North Carolina usually
brings wonderful fall weather and brilliant colors. This
year, the British Car Club of Western North Carolina
has chosen beautiful Chimney Rock Park as the venue for their
popular British car get-together. This is adjacent to Lake Lure,
another beautiful spot, and is an approximately three hour
drive from Atlanta.
The host hotel for the event is the Quality Inn & Suites at Exit
49A off I26 in nearby Hendersonville, NC. A block of rooms at
special rate has been set aside for those attending the event.
You will need to call the hotel direct to make your reservations
if you plan to attend. The telephone number is 828-692-7231.

so to eat. To handle this problem we will offer a
catered lunch to members and friends for a price of
$10.00/person. The only caveat is we must have your
RSVP and money by September 30th so please send
that in when you register your cars or you may send
it separately. We simply need an accurate head count.
I can’t stress enough how important it is to register
your cars early and also for the lunch. Unfortunately
last minute folks for the lunch won’t work however
you may register your car, of course, the day of the
event. The food will be on the lower level of Nalley
and will not be open to the public.
Please register early as we will have to pick cars that
will be displayed on the grass out front and those that
will actually be located in the showroom. The sooner
we have the entrants the sooner we can pick models
for these key display areas. Wayne Harris will be
handling the judges this year and as always we need
folks to help with that job as well. It does not matter
if you haven’t judged previously, we’ll put you with
someone who has. It’s a great way to develop a
Mid-October is a popular tourist time in the mountains so call
right away to reserve your room.
Early registration for the show can be made on the internet by
downloading the registration form at
www.autumninthemountains.org and mailing with your
payment. Forms will also be available at our regular meeting
September 25th. The fee is $25/car for registrations postmarked
prior to September 15. You can register on site for $30, or at
he host hotel from 4-6 PM the day before. Registration on site
runs from 8:30 to 12:00 noon. Registration includes one park
pass. Additional passes are $12/person. Judging runs from
12:00 to 2:00 PM. Awards by car class and a raffle winner are
at 3:30-4:00. Judging is non-critical, people’s choice.
We’ll have dinner Saturday evening at Larkins on the Lake in
Lake Lure.
If you go up the day before you can avoid that early start on
Saturday. If you’d like to travel with a group, we’ll plan on
departing from Bahama Breeze at Pleasant Hill and I85, left at
the first light on the east side of I85, at 8:00 AM sharp! Please
call Alan at 770-939-1644 or email him if you plan to go.
Include your cell phone number so that we can have a list for
staying in touch. Also, let him know if you plan to have dinner

sometimes travelled a great distance to be part
of the festivities so gradually it evolved into a party
that was held to greet out of town guests. Whether
you are in town or out of town this party is for you.
Bob and Fran have kindly offered their home for our
get together so that we can see old and new friends
prior to our show and they have a great house for a
party! As you will note above the party will be on
Friday night October 6th this year since the Concours
has been changed to a Saturday show date of the 7th.
We have moved the start time to 7:30 to accommodate
The club will provide a honey baked ham, beer and
wine with attendees providing a covered dish of either
hors d’oeuvre, casserole, veggie dish or dessert. This is
always a fun well attended evening of camaraderie and
conversation so plan to attend before the “big show”
as Ed Sullivan would say. Everyone is welcome
whether going to the Concours or not.
As always we need you to RSVP early or no later
than October 4th so preparations can be made. Please

This tech session will give
you an opportunity to find out
what the judges will be looking for
at the Concours. If you don’t want
to judge that’s OK but you will
still find the information relevant
when preparing your car for ours
or any other show you may participate in. Our judging sheets were
designed to be simple and easy so
that the Concours can be more fun
and less arduous. So, if you’ve not
judged before don’t let that stop
you we can put you with someone
who has experience so that you can
get the hang of it quickly. On the
other hand we do need as many
judges as we can get. The more we
have the faster the process is and
the faster to the award ceremony. If
you have judged previously please
plan to come to this session.
Wayne Harris will be handling the
judges this year and he is experienced and knowledgeable in the
way we handle the scoring.

2006 Concours d’Elegance Judging Guidelines
• ALL JUDGING IS DONE IN THE STAND-UP POSITION; I.E., UNDERSIDE OF CAR IS NOT JUDGED
• NEVER TOUCH THE CARS (HAVE THE OWNER OPEN THE DOORS, ETC.)
• DO NOT REVIEW THE SCORE SHEET WITH THE OWNER.
• DO NOT JUDGE A CLASS YOU HAVE A CAR ENTERED IN.
• REMEMBER - JUDGE’S DECISION IS FINAL!
• JUDGE FOR CLEANLINESS, AUTHENTICITY AND ‘WELL-MAINTAINED.” OLD, CLEAN AND
WELL-MAINTAINED COUNTS MORE THAN NEW AND DIRTY.
• FOLLOW THE SCORE SHEET AND JUDGE ONLY THE AREA INDICATED.
• BE SURE YOU DO NOT DOUBLE PENALIZE!
• BEFORE TAKING OFF POINTS FOR “NON-ORIGINAL,” REMEMBER - JAGUAR MADE MANY
VARIATIONS. IN CASE OF DOUBT CHECK WITH OTHER JUDGES, ASK OWNER ABOUT THE
ITEM. IF YOU ARE STILL NOT SURE DO NOT REMOVE ANY POINTS.
• CAR COLOR NEED NOT BE ORIGINAL TO CAR, BUT IT MUST BE A JAGUAR COLOR FOR THAT
MODEL AND YEAR. BE SURE BOOT AND ENGINE COMPARTMENT ARE SAME COLOR AS
BODY.
• RADIO STYLE MUST MATCH YEAR OF CAR. BATTERIES NEED NOT BE LUCAS.
• ALL 5 TIRES MUST MATCH. TIRE BRAND IS OWNER’S CHOICE, ALTHOUGH SIZE MUST
MATCH CAR. BLACKWALL, WHITEWALL, RED STRIPE, ETC. ARE ALL OK.
• GLASS NEED NOT BE TRIPLEX.
• MANY OF THE LATER CARS (E-TYPE SII, E-TYPE SIII, XJ6, XJS) DID NOT COME WITH TOOL
KITS.
• SOME DEALER OPTIONS ARE CONSIDERED ORIGINAL (I.E., SIDE MOLDING, TINTED GLASS,
AMCO BARS, WIRE WHEELS, ETC.). RULE OF THUMB - IF IT MATCHES THE ERA, DO NOT
PENALIZE.
• LOCAL DIRT ON TIRES IS ACCEPTABLE.
• ALL CARS ENTERED IN THE JUDGED CLASSES MUST BE BE DRIVEN TO THE EVENT. ANY
CAR ARRIVING IN THE VICINITY OF THE CONCOURS GROUNDS ON A TRAILER WILL BE
PLACED IN THE TOURING CLASS.
