FANART CONTEST
This year, Geek.Kon held a fanart contest for our three mascots Geekbot, Siggy and
Rodgort. The response was amazing! Congratulations to the winner Hue Vang and runnersup Cheri Fakes and Andrea Lee! Vang's art is featured on the front cover. Fakes produced
the art on the back cover and on pages 41 and 49. Lee's prize-winning artwork can be
seen above, with additional submissions on pages 4, 20, 25 and 36.
In recognition of the participating artists, more artwork can be found throughout this
program book. We'd like to thank everyone who submitted: Sakumo Ankoku (pages 10 and
24), Rosie Bradenburg (page 12), Emily Nelson (page 13), Samantha Williams (page 15),
Laura Meeker (page 28), Lauren Long (pages 40 and 51) and Joseph Barrington.
Thank you for participating!

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN
If my calculations are correct, you will receive this letter immediately after you saw the
DeLorean struck by lighting. Or maybe after meeting your favorite voice actor or game
designer. Perhaps after you just defeated Dr. Wily in the video game room. Or after doing
battle in the boffer room. My calculations have been wrong before.
Welcome to the fifth incarnation of Geek.Kon! Since our inception in 2007, we've come a
long way and we're looking back at the journey and what lies ahead. Every step gives us
something to get excited about.
Our first year in 2007 gave us Boffer, our unique Viewing Rooms and our standard of
providing a wealth of informative, diverse panels. 2008 introduced attendees to Steam
Century and DJ Scottaconda, while the video game room started down its path to
becoming the behemoth it is now. In 2009, we made the leap off campus, introducing new
programming such as the AMV Contest, Geek Show and the Iron Butt Challenge. Last year,
we settled into our new home at the Marriott and welcomed the Masked Ball, Kon.Quest
and the Tea Parties. All of these return better than ever for Geek.Kon.2011!
Our theme this year is “Unstuck In Time.” While that encourages us to look back at how
Geek.Kon evolved into its current form, we also look into the future and its new shinies.
Friday's Fashion Show highlights geek fashion designs from our community. Saturday night,
Madison's Velvet Darkness group will treat us to a live shadowcast of Rocky Horror Picture
Show. Sunday afternoon, join emerging rock band I Fight Dragons as they close out the con
with their unique blend of rock and video game chiptunes. So whether jumping forward or
stepping back, have a blast... and our con will do the Time Warp again!

CONVENTION OPERATIONS
VOLUNTEERING
Do you like this convention? Do you want to help make
this convention better! Come join us and volunteer!
…. One of Us, One of Us, One of Us…..
It takes people to make this Kon work. In fact, everyone
running this Kon volunteers their time to make it work.
You can join us!
VOLUNTEER ORIENTATIONS
Middleton Room
Thursday, 7:00 pm
Friday, 10:00 am
Friday, 7:00 pm
Saturday, 10:00 am
Besides the feeling of pride and accomplishment for helping the convention work, we have
other fringe benefits such as:
•
Volunters who commit to work at least 6 hours will receive a volunteer t-shirt!
•
If a person volunteers 10 or more hours for the convention, they will receive free
admission to the convention!
•
For our full Volunteer Policy, check our website or visit the Staff Room.
AMBASSADOR ALLEY
Geek.Kon may only happen one weekend a year, but thankfully there are other
conventions happening all the time. Come to the Ambassador Alley outside the Vendor
Room to meet representatives of some of these conventions and learn about the fun times
that can be had throughout the year.
ROOM PARTIES
While Geek.Kon cannot officially sponsor or sanction room parties, individuals are free to
host parties so long as they take responsibility for them. If hosting a party, you are liable.
Be advised that if you are serving alcohol at your party, you are responsible for checking
the age of your attendees. DO NOT serve alcohol to minors. Furthermore, please keep all
alcohol inside your hotel room. Security will be making their way around the hotel. If we
catch anyone serving alcohol or other illegal substances to minors, or if a minor is caught
drinking, they will be ejected from the convention.
SURVEYS
Surveys are a very important part of Geek.Kon and one
of the best ways to let the staff know what you want to
see in the future. In the past, survey results have
influenced many changes from the initial move to a hotel
in 2009 to the expansion into the current hotel. Survey
suggestions have also led to the creation of new
programming including the Masked Ball, Karaoke, Rock
Show and others.
POST CON Q&A
Wisconsin Room
Sunday, 5:00 – 6:00 pm
To fill out a survey, stop by the Staff Room or stick around after Closing Ceremonies. A
staff member may also roam the halls with surveys as well. Remember to fill out the surveys
truthfully and in their entirety to make sure the total results are as accurate as possible.
You can also stop by our Post Con Q&A session after Closing Ceremonies to talk to staff
members and leave feedback.

from

the right controller. I Fight Dragons are Brian

KON.QUEST
Monona Room
FRI: 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
SAT: 10:00 am – 9:00 pm
Anime, sci-fi, tabletop gaming and video gaming... It has
been a year since the last gathering of the Four Geekdoms.
Wherever they congregate, magical energy is thick in the air. This year's Geek.Kon
happens to lie at a structurally weak point in the space-time continuum. The massive
release of energy from the Geekdoms has torn a hole in the fabric of space-time itself,
causing time machines from myriad universes to be sucked through the hole and strewn
about. Mysterious and powerful beings known only as the Mecha Turbo Space Wizards
are desperate to lay claim to these devices, and will pay well for them. As an adventurer
from one of the four Geekdoms, it is up to you to strike out with whatever allies you can
find and gather all the time machines that you can!
WHAT IS KON.QUEST?
Unique to Geek.Kon, Kon.Quest is a multifaceted event that offers something for everyone.
The event consists of over 30 separate "challenges": activities, puzzles and games that
each take roughly 2-15 minutes to play. No knowledge is required, most of the events are
for a variable number of players, and you can play as many challenges as you like.
Whether you're at the Kon alone or with a group, and whether you've got 10 minutes or 10
hours to play, come check us out!
WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES LIKE?
There are all sorts! They're distributed among a number of differently themed stations. At
the Cantina Front Room, a variety of geek trivia challenges await for you to solve alone or
with friends. The Cantina Back Room is home to several quick solo gambling-style games.
At the Fighter's Guild, you and any allies you bring will square off against opponents in
tactical hex-grid combat, with reaction-time and dexterity mini-games to determine
damage. The Water Temple hosts a variety of devilish puzzles, and the Osaka High Art and
Drama Club will call upon your creative talents like drawing and roleplaying.

IFGS
The Wisconsin chapter of the International Fantasy Gaming Society
(IFGS) is a not-for-profit organization that runs Live Action Roleplaying
events in the Madison area. Our events are fantasy-based, storydriven team games, with a safe light touch boffer combat system and
called magic system. Players create their own characters, which persist
through multiple games. The society allows us to offer insurance as
well as the ability to take characters to play in the other chapters
throughout the country. For more information visit www.wiifgs.org for
local events or www.ifgs.org for system information.
IFGS will run one-hour demo games for groups of 3-6 players. Space will be on a first
come, first served basis. There will be a short introduction on the rule system with simple
character creation, followed by a short game designed to give the flavor of IFGS games.
Characters created for the game can be taken into any other IFGS game, including
experience and treasure gained.

VIDEO GAMING
Superior Room
Opens: Friday, 12:00 pm
Closes: Sunday, 4:00 pm
Prepare yourself to enter the largest video game room in
the Midwest! Geek.Kon offers a gamer's mecca of almost
10,000 square feet of over 40 tables of consoles, a
dozen free-play arcade machines, round-the-clock
tournaments and a 24-hour Rock Band stage.
Please be respectful of the equipment. Most of it is being borrowed in good faith from
Geek.Kon staff and attendees who would like it back in the same condition as they left it.
Losing or damaging controllers, consoles, peripherals and games would betray their trust
in us, and harm our ability to provide the best experience possible next year.
ROCK BAND STAGE
Rock Band 3 will be set up on the main video game room stage for free play around the
clock. The only exception to this fantastically open rule is during previously-scheduled Rock
Band tournaments. There are only three of these; otherwise, rock out with... well, just rock
out.
(For a non-refundable $2, we will download any game onto the Xbox being used on the
Rock Band stage. These will then be free for anyone to play during the weekend, and will
be allowed for use in tournaments by anyone. Please check with us first to see if these
games are available– you may have to pay nothing at all!)
GEEK.KONSOLE CHALLENGE
Are you a bad enough dude(ette) to make it through six rounds of video game carnage to
make it to Sunday's final challenge?
Debuting this year, the Geek.Konsole Challenge presents up to 64 competitors the chance
to declare themselves the best gamers in the midwest. The preliminary elimination round
will determine the 32 who will go on to regular compeition. Subsequent rounds are one-onone single-elimination matchups on games past and present, but with rules designed to
excite and enrage. Get to the final round to experience the ultimate Geek.Konsole
Challenge, and declare yourself the first winner of our most insane video game event!
Signup begins Friday and ends Saturday at noon or when brackets fill up– whichever comes
first.
VIDEO GAME LIBRARY
Speak to one of our specially trained librarians to check out video games and peripherals
for all of your gaming needs! Most modern consoles with wireless controllers (Wii, Xbox
360, PS3) require checking in your badge at the command center by the main entrance.
You may check out one game and one controller at most per badge.
The good news is that most classic consoles —8-bit, 16-bit, and so on— do NOT require
checkout, so play away to your heart's desire! The only other exceptions are our
tournament stations and our Rock Band stage, which are controlled directly by staff and
cannot be changed out by attendees for any reason. But that's okay, because we're only
going to have stuff in there you're gonna want to play anyway.
VIDEO GAME TOURNAMENTS
Geek.Kon continues its proud tradition of a professional competitive experience at our
many tournaments. We are intensely interested in not frustrating you. All of our
tournaments have detailed rules available in the video game room. A full tournament listing
is available on the next page of this guide.
