Nature and Scope of the Edu-carers’ Profession
Promotion of young children’s maximum learning
outcomes that lead to their overall balanced
development in partnership with their parents
constitutes the nature and scope of the BECE
(Hons) program. The primary concern is about how
Edu-carers ensure that every child grows healthy
and strong, emerging confident, disciplined and
independent as they become interested in books
and learning, and literate - mixing with other children
and getting ready for primary school.

Delivery Modes
The ECCE teaching team is exceptionally strong in the
application of principles of best practice.
• All lessons are experiential and empirical in scope
• Centre-based observations are included in most
assignments
• Lesson plans have trial-runs with a small group of
children
• Theoretical engagement with research evidence is
implicit
• Reflection is an inclusive component of practice.
E-learning is the mode through which lecture notes and
assignment guidelines will be given. Recommended
readings will be given online. Additional reading
materials are available for purchase in the department.
Assessment Modes
To reflect the focus of the BECE program on Edu-carers’
education, a range of assessment modes are carried out.
The three general modes of assessment apply to most
subjects:
• Mid-term test
• Assignment
• Final examination
Formative assessment varies from 50% to 70% while
the examination is given 30% to 50% of overall marks.
Subjects that do not have mid-term tests and
assignments have the following alternative assessment:
• Curriculum portfolio
• Trial-run practicum
• Individualized test.
Practice-based subjects that do not have a final
examination are assessed in the following modes:
• Project inquiry
• Practical test
• Journal
• Event organization.
