A T-shirt isn’t usually considered high fashion but this
one supports a cause that
hits close to home in Oklahoma. The Remember the Removal
Bike Ride doesn’t start until
late May but you can help by
buying a T-shirt today.
Proceeds from sales of the
2014 shirts will help support riders as they travel 950
miles from New Echota, Ga.,
along the northern route
of the Trail of Tears, ending in Oklahoma. The ride
spans seven states, testing
the riders’ physical and
mental endurance, as well as
teaching leadership and the
history and struggles of the
Cherokee Nation. The shirts
are $15 and are available at
Cherokee Nation Gift Shop
Tahlequah and online at
CherokeeGiftShop.com.
The three-week ride mirrors in part the hardships
of their Cherokee ancestors
who made the same trek
on foot. Of the estimated
16,000 Cherokees who were
forced to make the journey to
Indian Territory, 4,000 died
due to exposure, starvation
and disease, giving credence
to the name Trail of Tears.
Along the way, the riders will
visit various gravesites and
historic landmarks along the
trail, including Blythe Ferry
in Tennessee and Mantle
Rock in Kentucky.
