From the Pastor’s Desk:
Egyptian pyramids are world-famous
as one of the “seven Wonders” of the
ancient world. But they are actually
gigantic tombs containing the
mummified bodies of Egyptian
Pharaohs. Westminster Abby is
famous, and thousands visit it
because the dead bodies of famous writers, philosophers
and politicians are entombed there. Taj Mahal in India is
world famous for its beautiful architecture. But it is tomb
of one of the Mogul princesses. But there is the Shrine
of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, and pilgrims from
all over the world visit a tomb there which is empty with
a note at its entrance which says, “He is not here.” It is
famous because Jesus Christ who was once buried there
rose from the dead, leaving an empty tomb as he had
told his disciples he would. Thus, he worked the most
important miracle in his life, defying the laws of nature
and proving that He is God. We rejoice at this great and
unique event by celebrating Easter.
Easter is the greatest and the most important feast in the
Church for three reasons:
1) The Resurrection of
Christ is the basis of our Christian Faith. It is the
greatest of the miracles, for it proves that Jesus is
God. That is why St. Paul writes: “If Christ has not
been raised, then our preaching is in vain; and your
Faith is in vain” (I Cor 15: 14). “Jesus is Lord, He is
risen” (Rom 10: 9), was the central theme of the
preaching of the Apostles. No founder of any religion
has an empty tomb as Jesus has. Further, neither the
Jews nor the Romans could disprove Jesus’ Resurrection
by presenting the dead body of Jesus. 2) Easter is the
guarantee of our own resurrection. Jesus assured Martha
at the tomb of Lazarus: “I am the Resurrection and the
Life; whoever believes in Me will live even though he
dies” (Jn 11: 25-26). 3) Easter is a feast which gives us
hope and encouragement in this world of pain, sorrows
and tears. It reminds us that life is worth living. It is our
belief in the Real Presence of the Risen Jesus in our
souls, in His Church, in the Blessed Sacrament and in
Heaven that gives meaning to our personal as well as our
communal prayer and strength to fight against
temptations and freedom from unnecessary worries and
fears. Happy Easter to all.
-------------------------------------------------------------------Joseph of Arimathaea was a very wealthy Pharisee, a
member of the council, and a secret follower of Jesus. It
was Joseph who went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body
after the crucifixion. And it was Joseph who supplied the
tomb for Jesus’ burial. I wonder if someone pulled him
aside and said, "Joseph that was such beautiful, costly,
hand-hewn tomb. Why on earth did you give it to
someone else to be buried in?" "Why not?" Joseph
might have answered. “He only needed it for the
weekend."

mundo antiguo. Pero son realmente tumbas gigantescas
que contienen los cuerpos momificados de los Faraones
Egipcios. Westminster Abby es famoso, y miles lo
visitan porque los cadáveres de famosos escritores,
filósofos y políticos se encuentran allí. Taj Mahal en la

Santuario del Santo Sepulcro en Jerusalén, donde

La Semana Santa es la fiesta más grande e importante en
la Iglesia por tres razones:
1) La Resurrección de Cristo es la base de nuestra Fe
Cristiana. Es el mayor de los milagros, porque demuestra
que Jesús es Dios. Es por esto que San Pablo escribe: "Y
si Cristo no resucitó, nuestra predicación no tiene
contenido, como tampoco la fe de ustedes." (1 Co
15:14). "Porque te salvarás si confiesas con tu boca
que Jesús es Señor y crees en tu corazón que Dios lo
resucitó de entre los muertos." (Rom 10:9), fue el
tema central de la predicación de los Apóstoles. Ningún
fundador de cualquier religión tiene una tumba vacía
como Jesús. Además, ni los Judíos ni los Romanos
pudieron refutar la Resurrección de Jesús presentando el
cuerpo muerto de Jesús.
2) La Semana Santa es la garantía de nuestra propia
resurrección. Jesús le aseguró a Martha en la tumba de
Lázaro: "Yo soy la resurrección y la vida. El que cree en
mí, aunque muera, vivirá " (J n 11: 25-26).
3) La Semana Santa es una fiesta que nos da esperanza y
aliento en este mundo de dolor, penas y lágrimas. Nos
recuerda que la vida es digna de ser vivida. Es nuestra
creencia en la Presencia Real de Jesús Resucitado en
nuestras almas, en Su Iglesia, en el Santísimo Sacram
ento, y en el Cielo, lo cual da sentido a nuestra oración
personal y comunitaria, y la fuerza para luchar contra las
tentaciones y la libertad de preocupaciones y temores
innecesarios. Felices Pascuas a todos.

Consejo y discípulo secreto de Jesús. Fue José quien fue
a Pilato y le pidió el cuerpo de Jesús después de la
crucifixión. Y fue José quien proveyó la tumba para el
entierro de Jesús. Me pregunto si alguien le jaló a un lado
y dijo: "José, que tumba tan hermosa, costosa, y tallada a
mano. ¿Por qué usted no se la dio a otra persona para ser
enterrado en ella?" "¿Por qué no?" José podría haber
respondido. "Él sólo la necesitaba por un fin de semana."

continued… The Franciscans
of the Custody of the Holy
Land provide pastoral care in 29 parishes, offering
Worship, Faith Formation, youth and family programs.
Their Media Center tells the story of the Holy Land
through multimedia distributed throughout the world. The
Franciscan friars organize Liturgical Celebrations for the
local Christians and Pilgrims and share with other
Christian communities.
How did the Franciscan get custody of the Holy Land? In
the year 1209, a layman upon hearing the words of
Jesus in the Gospel bidding his apostles to go forth on
their mission, was struck with a calling. He began to preach and his name was Francis of Assisi. He
developed a small following and they went to Rome to see Pope Innocent III, who gave them oral
permission to live in the manner Francis had chosen. Thus began the Franciscan order of friars, an
entirely new type of order in the church. They wandered about Umbria and through Italy preaching the
Gospel, working to pay for their very simple needs. Francis not only sent his brothers abroad, but went
himself to Dalmatia, France, Spain and in the years 1219 – 1220 to the Holy Land. It was the time of the
disastrous Fifth Crusade where a European Christian army was attempting to recapture Jerusalem from
the Muslims. Francis crossed enemy lines to talk with al-Kamil in his camp on the banks of the Nile. He
was the sultan of Egypt and a nephew of the great Muslim warrior Saladin. Francis who opposed the
warfare, hoped to bring about peace by converting the sultan to Christianity. He didn’t succeed, but had a
peaceful encounter and the Sultan who was so impressed that he let Francis continue on his way to the
Holy Land. In 1291, the last remaining Crusader stronghold, the city of Akko fell into Muslim hands. The
Franciscans retreated to Cyprus, but left some of their friars in Jerusalem and the other Holy Places in
the Holy Land. The friars often risked their lives and died trying to stay. In 1333, through Franciscan
mediation, the royal family of Naples acquired from the Sultan the legal right to the Holy Cenacle
(traditional site of The Last Supper) as well as the right to hold religious services at the Holy Sepulchre
(tomb where Jesus was laid after death). In 1342 the royal family of Naples decided that the Franciscans
should exercise these rights on behalf of the Christian world and Pope Clement VI approved the decision
by presenting the royal family with the bill, thereby officially establishing the Franciscans with the Custody

When I was younger and growing up in Alexandria, Virginia, I remember one year it
actually snowed on Easter. It was crazy that that late in the year we got up and dressed in
our best spring clothes so we could venture into the snow on our way to Easter Mass. I
remember thinking that the day did not feel much like Easter. It was hard to really get into the mood of God making all things
new on a day so cold and full of flurries. If I am honest, I think we rushed home after Mass so we could get on warm pajamas
and just watch TV for the rest of the day, snuggled up on the couch with blankets. It might as have well been a Sunday in
January.
This year the odds are against it snowing on Easter where I live in North Carolina. However, for far too many it might as well
snow. To them, Easter has nothing to do with the resurrection of Jesus Christ, new life, or anything of the sort. It is just another
Sunday. Some of them don't care and never think of Jesus or God on any Sunday of the year. But for others, it will not feel like
Easter because they have been forgotten. On this day they will sit at home, just like they sit every single day of their lives. They
might be poor, elderly, disabled, or simply alone. On this day, there is no Resurrection celebration because they have no real
experience of the joy of life.
This is where good Everyday Stewards can make a difference. In the midst of buying candy and decorating eggs for baskets and
buying new clothes to wear to Easter Mass, find someone who needs to experience the power of Easter. Don't tell them Jesus
rose for them, but show them. Instead of the cold of isolation, bring to them the warmth of new life.
