Bellevue Schools Foundation
Serving as the link between community members who care deeply about
the quality of our public schools and the students who need our support is a
serious responsibility. Throughout the 2012-2013 fiscal and school year, we
turned to parents, businesses, and civic leaders to ask you to invest your time, experiences,
talents, and financial resources to help make our schools as strong as possible. This annual
report tells stories of some of the people who responded “Yes! I want to make a difference
for our students!” as well as stories of what we all make possible. We are enormously grateful
to everyone who stepped forward to help this Foundation raise $1,648,171 in fulfillment of
our mission: to develop, promote, and fund the best possible learning opportunities for all
students in Bellevue’s public schools.
To make sure your funds are well invested, Foundation volunteers and staff review detailed,
quantitative reports on all our programs. Your investments truly make a difference: more
students are learning more thanks to your help.
Each and every student needs something we can provide by working together: a boost, a
challenge, a mentor, an introduction to a passion, enrichment, support, creative outlets, realworld connections, targeted interventions, hands-on learning, a jump start or a head start.
Providing the next generation with the support necessary to develop essential proficiencies,
skills, and insights is important work and we thank you for being part of it during the year
reported upon herein and into the future.

Celebrating the top ten successes
foundation donors made possible
1. DreamBox, an intelligent and individualized math program, is
now serving over 8,000 Bellevue elementary students in school
and at home.
2. Over 7,000 students received support from 734 trained
community mentors and tutors through VIBES (Volunteers in
Bellevue's Education System).
3. 80 VIBES mentors helped to stop summer slide for elementary
students during the Summer Scholars program.
4. Naviance, the state-of-the-art college and career platform for students, families, and
counselors, rolled out in every high school.
5. 92% of kindergarten students at schools with high percentages of low-income families met
literacy benchmarks with support from early literacy intervention.
6. 82% of high school seniors in AVID, a college readiness program supporting the least-
served students in the academic middle, have been accepted into a four-year college.
82% of parents with kids in this program did not attend college.
7. Bellevue is ranked 10th in the nation for the number of newly-minted National Board
Certified teachers and a total of 380 teachers are now National Board Certified.
8. Our new College and Career Next Steps Initiative offered college application and essay
workshops for students in every high school.
9. Grades improved and disciplinary actions plummeted at our highest need middle schools
thanks to innovative pilot projects funded through the Middle School Success Initiative.
10. The highest number of at-risk kids ever agreed to join Starting Strong, a summer program
to prepare kids for the school year at targeted middle and high schools.

Fostering innovative learning
Foundation donors helped launch three new initiatives for student success this year. These
programs represent a continuation and expansion of the Foundation's successful history of
identifying students' critical needs and developing programs to meet those needs.
DreamBox math
When Jose started school at Lake Hills Elementary, he was struggling in math. He
understood the concepts, but comprehending written instructions and assignments
in English rather than his native Spanish was a challenge. Once he was introduced to
DreamBox, an interactive math program designed to supplement math instruction for
elementary students, his math learning took off! DreamBox is designed without any
text, so students struggling in reading aren't held back. Jose is now a confident young
mathematician, and proud that his reading skills are improving too.
After a successful pilot in several schools, Foundation donors funded the expansion of
DreamBox to every elementary school in the district, providing licenses for students to
use the software in the classroom and at home. Teachers rave about the adaptive nature
of the program and its ability to help fill in the unique gaps in each student's learning.
Bellevue School District was able to take over funding of the program in 2013-14, freeing
Foundation dollars for new important projects.
Middle School Success
"It's just so awesome that we can use these cutting-edge tools and equipment here at
school!" exclaimed Alex, a student at Bellevue Big Picture School, during a recent visit.
Middle school can be a tough time for students and research shows that engaging them is
critical for success. Through the Middle School Success Initiative, Foundation donors are
providing resources to support innovative pilot projects to engage middle school students
and increase learning. Projects include Bellevue Big Picture School's high-tech MakerSpace
to promote hands-on learning, Odle Middle School's Success Initiative to offer targeted
intervention to support students in reaching high academic expectations, and Highland
Middle School's SOAR program to provide one-on-one after-school support from teachers.

Next Steps
High school students in Bellevue are better prepared to find their
colleges and careers than ever before thanks to the support of
Foundation donors.
Naviance, a college application system designed to simplify the
process and encourage collaboration, was initially piloted in two high
schools and is now in every high school. The system offers college
planning and career assessment tools.
Counselors have large caseloads and often struggle to meet the
needs of every student. Naviance helps them track student progress
and efficiently provide the attention that students need.
“The most beneficial piece is the communication between students,
parents, teachers, and counselors,” explained International School
Counselor Susan LaRosa. “Everything is in one place and everybody
knows what’s going on.”
Other support provided through the initiative includes after-school
college application workshops (including the expansion of the
popular College Corps program), one-on-one help with applications
and essays, a comprehensive college application guide, and more.
By providing these resources, Foundation donors are helping ensure
that every graduating senior is familiar with options for college or
other post-secondary training and has the support he or she needs
to make plans for a positive and productive future.

collaboration
Leading-edge pilot projects taking place inside Bellevue schools
not only benefit Bellevue students, but also serve as models for
schools well beyond our district.
An ongoing collaboration with The George Lucas Educational
Foundation and the University of Washington is incorporating
problem-based learning into high school AP courses and
engaging students through real-world scenarios. This work is
receiving national attention and helping to shape AP courses in
other districts.
Sammamish High School, enabled by a $4.1 million Investing
in Innovation (i3) federal grant award, is being transformed into
a model for preparing students for college and 21st century
careers. Now in year three, significantly more students are
participating and succeeding in rigorous coursework thanks to a
new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) focus,
problem-based learning in every classroom, and engagement
of the entire faculty in collaborative professional development.
Quick Foundation action in 2010 secured the matching dollars
necessary to receive the five-year i3 grant.
Bellevue Schools Foundation supports innovative projects like
these not just with funding, but with resources to identify areas
of need, facilitate conversations with potential partners, and
complete grant applications.

child read
When was the last time you read a
street sign? Or followed a set of written
instructions? Reading is a critical life skill
many of us take for granted. Our donors
believe it is essential for all students to
receive the support they need to become
fully proficient.
Early literacy intervention provides trained
instructional aides for kindergarten
classrooms in six high-needs elementary
schools. The lower adult-child ratio allows
teachers to better individualize literacy
instruction and focus on how to best meet
the needs of every student.
This support provided by Foundation
donors closely aligns with Bellevue School
District's Academic Success Initiative and
the goal for every student to be reading at
grade level by third grade in the 2015-16
school year. With the community's help,
every child in Bellevue, regardless of their
background or past experiences, will soon
be moving beyond just learning to read they'll be reading to learn.

Student, Bellevue Big Picture School
Guests who attended the 2013 Spring for Schools luncheon will long
remember Jesus Cruz, the dynamic then-sophomore at Bellevue Big
Picture School. Jesus told his story of challenging teachers in middle
school and then turning his life around and seeing the struggles
his teachers faced from the other side when he served as a special
education intern.
Jesus is committed to his education at Bellevue Big Picture and takes
multiple buses to get to school each day. He is interning in the Bellevue
School District's Department of Equity and recently spoke at the
GradNation Regional Summit in Bellevue. His sights are set on college
and he is starting to consider potential schools.
Through programs like Student Success and Leadership and AVID, as
well as support for Bellevue Big Picture School, Foundation donors are
encouraging budding leaders to take full advantage of their potential.

form of bequest language in
their wills or a codicil added
to a previously completed
document. The Bellevue
Schools Foundation is also
able to accept other forms
of estate gifts.

When they graduated from Bellevue
High School in 1960, Jim and Sherry
Ladd (née Smith) had no idea that
Bellevue’s public schools would later
be a centerpiece of their lives. Yet years
later, after living in Japan and on the
U.S. East Coast, that is what transpired.
When Jim’s employer, Deloitte,
returned the family to the Northwest in 1986, Jim and Sherry looked for the
quality, challenging education they knew their children needed to thrive. “You’ll be
glad to be in Bellevue’s schools” friends told them. They also mentioned the thenfledgling Bellevue Schools Foundation and Jim and Sherry noted the people who
were leading the effort. “With high-quality people like Ann Lukens, Bob Campbell, and
David Schooler involved, we knew this was the kind of solid organization we wanted to
support,” Sherry explains.
Sherry’s parents had led by example, “giving of themselves,” as she describes it. This
inclination toward service prompted Sherry to volunteer to help organize the first-ever
Phonathon. Sherry was hooked. From volunteer to assistant to executive director, Sherry
passionately and tirelessly worked for over 21 years, engaging people in helping make
Bellevue’s public schools the best they can be.
Given Sherry’s long and deep involvement, it makes sense she and Jim would choose
to include the Foundation in their wills. “We have confidence the institution is strong
enough to fulfill our goals,” Jim says, which is high praise given his CPA career and
service on the boards of more than 20 organizations, three quarters of them nonprofits.
Today, the couple enjoys semi-retirement, continued community service, and their
first grandchild. “Whether people have children in Bellevue’s public schools or not,”
they conclude, “we all have a stake in education. We have to have a well-educated
population to have a functioning democracy and economy. We’re grateful we’ve
been able to contribute to that and while we hope to live long enough to ‘spend our
children’s inheritance,’ as the saying goes, we believe it’s important to have these
plans in place to carry on our commitment to education and the other community
organizations we know make a difference.”

When did you first become
involved with the Foundation?
I became involved with the
Foundation when my daughter
Jessica (now a senior at WSU)
was in first grade at Bennett
Elementary. I am a working mom
and wanted to volunteer in a
position that complemented my
work schedule.

What inspired you to stay involved?
My job as a volunteer was made
extremely easy due to all the
support I received from my family,
friends, teachers, principals, and the
Foundation. The Foundation always
made me feel appreciated. It is a
wonderful experience to volunteer,
to know you are helping make a
difference, and to be thanked.
What has been most rewarding about
volunteering with the Foundation?
The most rewarding part is seeing how all the
programs the Foundation has funded over the
past 15 years have benefited the students and
teachers in the Bellevue School District. I have
always believed the Foundation gave me the
best bang for my donation buck, with regard to
both time and dollars. I experienced firsthand
how the programs funded by the Foundation
enriched my children's education.
