Dear Parents, Guardians and Students:

Welcome back to what is sure to be another exciting school year at Holy Cross! We would like
to welcome all the students, staff and parents of our Holy Cross community. We extend a spe- School Administration
cial welcome to our new staff and to the newest members of the Holy Cross family, our grade I. Faraone, Principal
nines: together, we will make this the best year ever.
E. Lavor, Vice-Principal
We would like to welcome our new Vice-Principals to Holy Cross, Mr. Ed Lavor and Mr. Peter Parente. Mr. Lavor will take care of students in grades 9 and 11, and Mr. Parente will take
care of students in grades 10 and 12. As a new administrative team, we are committed to
working together in the service of our students to promote a culture of student success. To that
end, parents, we ask your continued support in ensuring your child comes to school prepared
every day, in full uniform, with electronic devices off and invisible throughout the entire day.
The school year has begun and we are off to an amazing start with an abundance of extracurricular activities already under way! Our opening liturgy on September 14th set the tone as
Father Mike encouraged each of us to keep Jesus close this year and reminded us to be
“Simon” to others, helping to “carry the cross” of all those in need. We would like to thank the
Chaplaincy team for a most appropriate and invigorating start to the school year.

We continue to give thanks for all that our staff and students contribute to our community,
remembering that “whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers… you do unto
me.” (Matthew 25:40) As a Christ-centred community, let us continue to reflect on all of the
things we should be thankful for, and look for ways to ease the burdens of those in need, during this month of giving.

HOLY CROSS SCHOOL COUNCIL
On behalf of Holy Cross Academy’s Catholic School Council, and as the new Chair, I wish to thank all who supported our fundraising initiative. Thank you as well to all who volunteered to serve on School Council for this school
year.
In the upcoming weeks we will be reviewing the school and students’ needs and determining how the funds we
have collected will be allocated. Our students are our priority and all funds collected are allocated with the view of
ensuring that the maximum number of students benefit.
We are also happy to report that School Council was successful in securing funding from the Ministry of Education,
through its Parents Reaching Out Grant. The Grant will allow us to present a workshop for parents on the Career
Cruising Program which our students must use to register for courses. We intend to schedule this event in early
November and all are welcome.
School Council is also excited to be able to communicate with the community through Holy Cross’ newly formatted
Website. Please check back periodically for School Council updates and news. Council meetings are held every
third Wednesday of the month, and all are welcome.
Regards,
Maria Marchese Bulat - School Council Chair

Holy Cross Catholic Academy hosted a Grade 12 College Fair on Wednesday September 26,
2012 as well the Grade 12 University Fair on Tuesday October 9, 2012. We received positive
feedback from the colleges, universities and our students. This is just the beginning of the
school year process on providing our grade 12 students with the resources needed to make
informed decisions regarding their pathway. Please refer to our newsletters on the school
website for more information.
We also completed our grade 9 orientation to the Guidance Department. We have many other
planned activities to continue to support our students.
The Guidance Department is a vital and integral part of Holy Cross. Through the department,
students will acquire the knowledge and skills that they need in order to learn effectively, to live and work cooperatively
and productively with a wide range of people, to set and pursue education and career goals, and to carry out their social responsibilities. The department continues to disseminate information through various means, including but not
limited to the following: classroom instruction, orientation and exit programmes, career exploration activities, and individual assistance.

Wow! Is it October already?!! First semester in the Holy Cross School Library has started off with a thrust that has seen it move from
fast paced to faster paced! Before school, many students use the library to complete homework, borrow a book, print assignments
or research on the computers. The morning rush is the start of very busy days in this information centre. Classes, small groups and
individual students find that the library is the place for them to connect: – to friends, information, and new learning opportunities.
The power of ‘Connect’
C – Collaborate, create, critically think, and communicate to learn
O – Organize and use print and online resources for multiple perspectives
N – Network and use new technologies and literacies to expand opportunities
N – Navigate through the news to become an informed global citizen
E – Evaluate and explore all possibilities for personal growth and learning
C – Come together quietly in the Learning and Library Commons
T – Take advantage of the experts in your environment
During September and October, Grade 9 students are welcomed into the library and participate in a hands-on Orientation session
which engages them in interactive inquiry via a ‘Jeopardy’ game on library procedures. They also develop searching skills using
online resources, such as electronic databases and e-books.
Additionally, many Grade 10-12 students also find that the library is the place to be to access resources, work on research assignments and find answers to their many questions, thus making the Holy Cross Library a very busy and vibrant learning area!
On September 28t, the Freedom4Tomorrow group attended the international ‘Me to We’ celebration in Toronto. It was an exciting
day and the start of this year‘s planning for events/campaigns to raise awareness of critical causes in our world. The students are
committed to ‘Being the Change” in our community and connecting to those who need our help. “Think Globally, Act Locally” will
drive most of their actions this year.
The Freedom4Tomorrow club (a chapter of Free the Children) meets every Tuesday in the library. New members are always welcome.
Get Connected, Join the Action. Contribute to Change!
Stay Connected @ your library is also the theme of the Holy Cross campaign celebrating National School Library Month this October. This month is dedicated to highlighting the positive correlation between school libraries and student success. During Oct 15th19th, in particular, classes and students will have the opportunity to be
involved in a number of activities; the ever popular ‘give and get’ free
book sharing event, a library’ information raffle, and educational
games – all promoting our ‘connectedness’.
Finally, Today’s Student---Tomorrow!
Holy Cross has entered the AVIVA Community Fund competition, for
monies towards a tablet (Ipad) learning lab. The submission is called
Today's Student - Tomorrow! and is listed as number ACF13656.
The complete url for this project is http://
www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf13656.
Voting ended on October 15th. Thank you for your support of this
worthy initiative that will help us connect twenty first century technology to our students’ learning experiences.

A very busy start to the school year was begun with a celebration of our
school feast day on September 14, The Feast of the Triumph of the Cross,
celebrated by Father Michael Corcione from St. Peter's Parish. The focus
of our liturgy was how each of us can help lessen the burden of the crosses
we all bear, just as Simon of Cyrene did for Christ during his passion.
The mass, along with our second annual Thanksgiving Food Drive and raffle was organized by
the Chaplaincy
Team, this year consisting of Ivano Battilana, Sofia Bruno
and Mark Mignella. The food drive was a huge success, filling well
over 12 barrels, in support of the Vaughan Food Bank. Congratulations goes to Courtney Sutherland, winner of our student grand
prize of an iPod nano, and the staff prize of a dinner for two at the
Keg was won by Mrs. Ambrosi.
An exciting new retreat was organized for our Grade 9 students this year. Close to 200 students attended the Gr. 9 Orientation Retreat at the Youth Leadership Camps Canada in Orillia, Ontario. The Chaplaincy Team, along with Father Michael Corcione, delivered a very fun and meaningful experience that our students will remember for years to come.
Our Holy Cross Youth Group is also in full swing, having participated in our traditional retreat experience in early October. 30 students picked apples at Dixie Orchards in Caledon, and then delivered those
apples to the Good Shepherd
Centre, a shelter for homeless
men in Toronto. The apples were
used in their Thanksgiving meal.
The Youth Group finished the day
doing service work at the centre.
We look forward to continuing to
live the Gospel of Christ in our
school and community throughout
this school year.
