At Loving Earth we work with a range of small
producer communities around the world to source only
the best healthy, sustainable & fair ingredients. We
lovingly process and package them at our Melbourne
home, where we always endeavor to maintain the
optimal level of nutrients in the finished product.
Coconut oil/butter
What is it?
The reason we call our coconut oil "Coconut Butter" is
because its texture is creamier and more buttery than
other coconut oils. Why? Because we use wet method
centrifuge extraction, cold-pressing the oil from fresh
coconuts within one hour of breaking the seal on the
coconut shell. It is raw, light tasting and smooth unlike any coconut oil you've ever experienced. Our
current batch of 500ml Coconut Butter is sourced from
the Philippines and is processed in exactly the same
way as shown in the photos on our gallery of the
Mexican operation. Our bulk 10L and 20L buckets also
contain Coconut Butter from the Philippines.
Coconut Butter is considered to be one of the most stable
oils. With a smoking temperature of 232 degrees Celsius,
Coconut Butter can also be used for frying and baking.
Our Coconut Butter has a light and refreshing taste that
will not over power your dishes, making it suitable for a
wide variety of applications. Try it on homemade
popcorn!
It can be used to moisturise the skin – simply apply some
to your body after a shower for a soft creamy feeling. It is
also used as a natural make-up remover.
Coconut oil is a great hair conditioner – apply generously
before going to bed and wash it off in the morning for
healthy and luxurious tresses.
Health Benefits
Its health benefits include hair care, skin care, stress
relief, maintaining cholesterol levels, weight loss,
increased immunity, proper digestion and metabolism,
relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high
blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and cancer, dental care,
and bone strength. Click on Health Benefits to the left
to find out more.
Coconut Butter is known for its Lauric acid content, and
for its quality, healthy saturated fats. Cholesterol does not
naturally occur in the plant kingdom. Unlike saturated
animal fats, Coconut oil is cholesterol free, making it safe
for people with cholesterol challenges. Lauric acid
promotes immune function through its transformation into
monolaurin once ingested.
How to use?
Cellular Health
The most beneficial way for us to consume Coconut
Butter is as a replacement to processed oils and fats. 35 tablespoons a day is a therapeutic dosage.
Use Coconut butter as a replacement to margarine and
butter on sandwiches, add it to Smoothies for a dose of
healthy fats, or spread it on crackers and eat as is.
Our body's cells are comprised primarily of saturated
fats. Regular consumption of Coconut Butter promotes
cellular health reducing oxidative damage from free
radical exposure. Internal cellular protection translates
externally to healthier, more hydrated, younger looking
skin.

Weight Loss
Medium Chain triglycerides (MCT's) are abundantly
found in Coconut Butter. Unlike other forms of fat, the
liver is able to metabolise MCT's similarly to how it
utilises carbohydrates as a fuel source. Coconut Butter's
digestibility means that it is quickly absorbed by our
bodies, and not left to circulate the blood stream like
other fats. The MCT's in coconut oil have also been
shown to have thyroid supporting mechanisms. Studies
that were conducted on the basal (resting) metabolic
rate of people who ate MCT's comparative to those
participants who consumed more LCT's (long chain
triglycerides i.e. vegetable oils) were found on average
to have a 12% increase in their basal metabolic rates.
An incereasing amount of studies are being done on
coconut oil; building a picture of a remarkable healthgiving food. Some of the properties attributed to coconut
oil include:
• Anti-viral: coconut oil has been shown to be
antagonistic to a wide range of viruses including
those that cause influenza, herpes, measles,
hepatitus C, SARS and AIDS.
• Anti-microbial: attacks bacteria that causes ulcers,
throat infections, urinary tract infections, gum
disease, cavities, pneumonia and some STDs.
• Anti-fungal: antagonistic to fungi and yeasts that cause
candidasis, ringworm, athelete's foot, thrush and
nappy rash.
• Anti-parasitic: attacks such parasites as tapeworm,
Giardia and others.
• Nutritional: provides a source of quick energy, boosts
energy, endurance and athletic performance.
Improves digestion and absorbtion of other
nutrients including calcium, magnesium, other
minerals, vitamins and amino acids. Improves
insulin secretion and blood glucose utilisation.
Acts as a protective anti-oxidant. Improves
utilisation of essential fatty acids. Reduces the
body's need for vitamin E.
• Supports bodily organs and systems: supports thyroid
function, immune system, helps prevent liver
and kidney disease and bladder infections.
Helps dissolve kidney stones. Improves bowel
function. Improves cholesterol ratio, reducing
risk of heart disease, protects arteries from
injury that causes atherosclerosis.
• Helps protect body against: cancers including breast
and colon, osteoporosis, periodontal disease,
tooth decay and free radicals (which contribute
to premature ageing).
• Reduces or relieves symptoms of: pancreatitis,
diabetes, gallbladder disease, Crohn's disease,
ulcerative colitis, stomach ulcers,
haemorrhoids, epileptic seizures, prostate
enlargement, chronic fatigue syndrome,
inflammation, malabsorption syndrome, cystic
fibrosis and Alzheimer's disease.
• Coconut oil is lower in calories than other fats and
does not deplete the body's reserves of
antioxidants as some other oils do.
• Weight loss: coconut oil is used by the body as an
immediate energy source and is not stored as
body fat. Promotes loss of excess weight by
increasing thyroid function and metabolic rate.
Helps prevent obesity.
What is Oil Pulling?
Oil pulling is an age-old remedy that uses natural
substances to clean and detoxify teeth and gums. It has
the added effect of whitening teeth naturally and
evidence even shows that it is beneficial in improving
gums and removing harmful bacteria!
The basic idea is that oil is swished in the mouth for a
short time each day and that this action helps improve
oral health. Just as with Oil Cleansing for the skin, the
principle of “like dissolves like” applies, as oil is able
to cut through plaque and remove toxins without
disturbing the teeth or gums.
Coconut oil pulling
Step1: First thing in the morning on an empty stomach
and before drinking any liquids (including water),
pour exactly one tablespoon of
Step 2: Swish the oil around in your mouth without
swallowing it. Move it around in your mouth and
through your teeth, as if it was mouthwash (don't tilt
your head back to gargle though). You'll find that the
oil will start to get watery as your saliva mixes with it.
Keep swishing for about 20 minutes. Do not swallow
any oil as it is full of toxins and bacteria from your
gums and teeth.
Step3: As the end of the oil pulling session approaches,
Spit the oil out, then rinse the mouth with warm salt
water and brush your teeth.

Microdermabarsion
Microdermabrasion is one of the more recent
skin-care techniques to have crossed over
from Hollywood to the mainstream. It's being
advanced as an "instant facelift" -- an effective
alternative to costlier and more invasive
procedures like plastic surgery, chemical peels
and Botox injections. Recently, more and more
men are trying it, instead of pursuing cosmetic
surgery.
So what exactly is microdermabrasion, what
does it promise and what effect does it actually
have on your face? Do you need a doctor, or is
it something you can do yourself? In this
article, we'll look at the science behind
microdermabrasion, see what a treatment is
like and find out what it does to your skin.
The Basics
Microdermabrasion is a general term for the
application of tiny rough grains to buff away
the surface layer of skin. Many different
products and treatments use this method,
including medical procedures, salon
treatments and creams and scrubs that you
apply yourself at home. It's usually done to the
face, chest, neck, arms or hands. Before we
can understand how microdermabrasion does
what it does, it's important to understand how
skin works.
Your skin is made up of two main layers, the
epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is
the layer closest to the outside world. It's a set
of dead skin cells on top of another layer of
cells that are in the process of maturing. The
topmost layer is called the stratum corneum.
The stratum corneum mostly acts as a barrier
between the outside world and the lower skin
5

3
layers. It keeps all but the smallest molecules
from getting through.
When you put lotions or creams on your skin,
some of the moisture passes through the
stratum corneum, but not all of it. This layer is
home to many minor skin imperfections like fine
wrinkle lines and blemishes.
All of the action in microdermabrasion takes
place at the level of the stratum corneum. Since
it only really targets the epidermis (and not the
dermis), it is more accurate to call it micro-epidermabrasion. Affecting deeper layers of skin
would be painful and harmful, and it would risk
permanently embedding the tiny grains into the
skin.
Whether done with a product at home or in a
professional setting with a specialized tool, the
principle of microdermabrasion is the same. The
idea is that if you remove or break up the
stratum corneum, the body interprets that as a
mild injury and rushes to replace the lost skin
cells with new and healthy ones. In the first hour
after treatment, this causes mild edema
(swelling) and erythema (redness). Depending
on the individual, these side effects can last
anywhere from an hour to two days.
This process has a few beneficial effects. With
the stratum corneum gone, the skin's surface is
improved. The healing process brings with it
newer skin cells that look and feel smoother.
Some of the skin's visible imperfections, like sun
damage, blemishes and fine lines, are removed.
Also, without the stratum corneum acting as a
barrier, medicinal creams and lotions are more
effective because more of their active
ingredients and moisture can find their way
down to the lower layers of skin. As
microdermabrasion temporarily removes some
moisture from the skin, it is always followed by
the application of moisturizing creams.
Early studies suggest that repeated
microdermabrasion treatment at regular
intervals may influence the way the lower
layers of skin grow, as well, removing deeper
blemishes over time. Some evidence seems to
indicate that the rapid loss of skin moisture
may be what triggers the lower skin layers to
work overtime in speeding healthy cells up to
the surface.
Microdermabrasion Candidates
Microdermabrasion works especially well as a
way to clean out clogged pores. It's a useful
alternative for patients whose skin is too
sensitive to use anti-acne drugs like
Retin-A. It's not recommended for those who
have active oral herpes. Here's a list of the
conditions that make someone unsuited for
microdermabrasion:
• Active rosacea
• Fragile capillaries
• Vascular lesions
• Widespread acne
• Herpetic lesions (herpes)
• Warts
• Open sores
• Skin lesions
• Anyone who takes anti-coagulants
• Eczema
• Dermatitis
• Psoriasis

the clean start story
As the first skin care system aimed at helping
teens cut through the hype to get their healthiest
skin ever, you may be surprised to find Clean
Start is rooted in skin health legacy!
Clean Start was created by the skin health experts
at Dermalogica, the brand that’s been changing
the face of skin care for more than 25 years. It
became clear that no one was addressing the
needs of teens – not only with products that get
results, but also with the education they need –
when Dermalogica Founder Jane Wurwand’s own
daughters entered their teenage years.
Skin care product choices available to teens may
be ample, but they aren’t good choices. Products
for teens often contain harsh and inexpensive
ingredients to strip the skin of oil, and are filled
with artificial fragrances and colors – all things
that can irritate and strip oil from skin, causing
more problems than you started with!
And so we began to develop Clean Start, but not
without knowing that we needed real skin care
situations from the teens we were trying to help!
Instead of creating a focus group (too formal, and
quite simply, not fun), we invited a council of
young adults to work with us on the naming of
the products, the labeling, packaging copy,
and what worked – and what didn’t.
The result is Clean Start, a system of eight
dual-action, fun, fresh, skin-healthy products
that feel and smell great without being full of
stuff that’s bad for skin – such as artificial
fragrances, colors, mineral oil, and S.D.
alcohol. Another thing you might like: we don’t
test on animals.
We invite you to explore this site to learn more
about your skin, and how Clean Start can help
you build a better relationship with your skin
for a healthy future.

Journal. Chocolate contains compounds that
act as stimulants believed to boost serotonin
and endorphin levels in the brain. It contains the
stimulants theobromine and caffeine that can
increase alertness and give you a pleasurable

as support a healthy immune system.
This is my healthy take on the traditional red velvet
chocolate cake. It’s lovely and moist from the fresh
grated beetroot that i’ve added into my cupcake
batter and it replaces the traditional red food
colouring found in traditional recipes. I’ve thrown in
a handful of raisins to add a touch more sweetness
and it marries well with the cocoa and cinnamon.
You can also add prunes in place of the raisins that
provide a lower glycemic response and suited for
more mature palettes. The final cupcake looks
wholesome and healthy, quite rustic actually which I
really love. I enjoyed them topped simply with a
spoonful of thick Greek style yoghurt, but check out
my frosting recipes below to choose the one that
suits you ! If you’re entertaining, then adding a few
raspberries over the top will add another amazing
flavour sensation.
