by STEPHEN POLLOCK
MORE than 500 Morley
residents oppose an Optus
mobile phone tower planned
for Wellington Road.
The telco giant wants to erect
an antenna atop Wellington
Village IGA, close to North Morley
primary school, businesses and
homes.
Supermarket owner Kate
Fatouros fears custom will dry up
over safety fears about electromagnetic radiation.
“Eighty five per cent of our
customers are families with
children under the age of 13,” she
told the Voice. “We also get a lot
of pregnant ladies and elderly
customers.
“Customers have told me that
they won’t bring their children
into the store if there is a mobile
mast on the roof.”
The safety of mobile phone
towers has divided the scientific
community, with studies from the
World Health Organization, the
Australian Radiation Protection
and Nuclear Safety Agency
describing the risk of harm as
highly unlikely.
• Cr Graham Pittaway, left, and Kate Fatorous, front, oppose plans for a mobile phone tower in Morley.

close to schools and homes.”
Optus spokesperson Jacqui
Christie says the company can’t
provide specifics on height and
range until the design stage is
complete.
The Voice has seen a Daly
International design document
showing the tower to be about 5m.
“Low-impact” towers (defined
as under 5m) come under federal
law and don’t require council
approval.
But Bayswater councillor
Graham Pittaway, who’s tabled a
529-signature petition opposing
the tower, says it is “better to be
safe than sorry”.
“I appreciate there is some
doubt in the scientific community
about whether phone towers are
actually damaging to peoples’
health but until we can say it is
100 per cent safe, there is no point
in taking any chances and placing
these towers in suburban areas
“We intend to actively
consult with the local council
and community members upon
completion of the proposal,” Ms
Christie said. “Optus always
works hard to strike a balance
between community feedback and
the demand for increased mobile
coverage.”
In January Optus scrapped
plans to erect a 31m tower,
disguised as a tree, at Perth Oval.

A head for
business
W
E are about 15
minutes into the
longest conversation
I have ever had about hats
when milliner Susi Rigg
confesses she cannot actually
wear a hat.
“I don’t have a hat head,” she
says with a laugh.
Something about having a
thin face, apparently, makes one’s
noggin ill-suited to headwear.
Thankfully Rigg informs
me my face suits a hat. This is
welcome news as I’d recently
made a terrible mistake and
shaved my head: The effect so
alarming I’d walked out of the
barber’s shop and straight into
Bodkins Bootery to buy a new hat.
It suits me, Rigg says. And I
trust her judgement. She’s worked
in film and stage fashion for
years. She has sartorial souvenirs
from Salem’s Lot and Ned Kelly
scattered about her store, along
with a lifetime’s collection of
vintage costumes and beautifully
handmade hats. There’s an array
of burlesque and race-day outfits,
gorgeous shoes from a bygone era,
and even an original Victorian
girl’s dress passed down through
the ages.
But Rigg’s decided it’s time
to move her collection into other
hands and consider retirement.
“I don’t want to retire,” she
sigh. “But it’s hard to get a job
TRADERS

when you’re 60.”
Film work still comes in here
and there, but the shopfront in
a Beaufort Street arcade is quiet
these days; like the small town
from that Bruce Springsteen song,
the folk don’t come round here
much no more.
Rigg’s been here five years,
but business has waned since the
restaurant in the arcade closed
about eight months ago. It’s quiet
now. In the half-hour I spend there
one passer-by does come in, but
is looking for public toilets. Rigg
unlocks the building next door
with a friendly smile.
And everyone knows the story
about rents on Beaufort Street:
As the area becomes gentrified
the landlords think they can
charge a fortune. They’re wrong,
by the way, and one by one the
individualistic retailers close
shop and move out: Bodkins on
Beaufort, Planet’s corner store,
Heart and Home, along with a
slew of clothing shops down the
Highgate end.
Rigg isn’t sure of her plans longterm. Maintaining a storefront is a
hard ask.
She mentions the thought of
operating from home, selling her
wares online. It’s a move a lot
of traders have had to make to
keep up with a rapidly evolving
market.
“I reach more customers that
way,” she says.

Kenyon walk-out
saves dinners
by STEPHEN POLLOCK
BAYSWATER mayor Terry
Kenyon has walked out of
his own council chamber in a
move that saved mayoral and
budget dinners from the axe.
Cr Mike Sabatino—a veteran
Kenyon critic—had moved the
nosh-ups be scrapped to save
around $45,000 a year.
With Cr Kenyon’s “super
six” faction reduced to four—Cr
Barry McKenna (heart attack)
and Cr Marlene Robinson (knee
replacement) are on leave—Cr
Sabatino had five votes to push
the measure through.
Facing defeat, all four of
the Kenyon faction declared a
financial interest in the item and
left the chamber, en masse.
At least six councillors are
required for a quorum, resulting
in the item being held over to
next month’s council meeting.
Crs Robinson and McKenna
are expected to return for that
meeting, giving the mayor’s
faction the upper hand again.
Cr Mike Anderton described
the walkout as hypocritical,
saying councillors who’d walked
out had voted on the issue
previously without complaint.
“Two of the councillors who
walked out last Tuesday—
because they weren’t sure if
they could vote on the topic—
actually voted on the same topic
at the annual general meeting
of electors last December,” he
scoffed.
Cr Kenyon said recent
changes to the local government
act “had created uncertainty”.
“My fellow councillors
and myself felt that it was
appropriate to exercise due
diligence by declaring an interest
pending the outcome of legal
opinion on if we can actually
take part in debate on this
matter,” he said.
The mayor said the dinners
were networking opportunities
with councillors, MPs and
dignitaries that, “far outweighs
the cost”.
Cr Chris Cornish, who’d
campaigned against the
budget dinner during his 2011
campaign, says they’re a waste
of ratepayers’ money. “The
annual ‘budget dinner’ serves no
purpose other than to provide
councillors with a nice meal at a
fl ash restaurant,” he said.

Outrageous
hypocrisy
I REFER to “Abbott MP wants
faster NBN rollout” (Voice, April
21, 2012) in which Stirling Liberal
MP Michael Keenan calls on the
federal government to rollout the
National Broadband Network
more rapidly.
Michael Keenan and Tony Abbott
have voted against the NBN 14
times in the parliament: They have
attempted to block the NBN at every
turn.
For Mr Keenan to now call for
a faster rollout is outrageously
hypocritical.
As he would know, around
15,400 homes and businesses in
his electorate of Stirling will be
connected to high-speed broadband
within three years and the entire
electorate over time.
Despite Mr Keenan doing
everything within his power to stop
the NBN, the federal government
understands the residents and
businesses of Stirling are crying out
for better internet connections.
That’s why the Gillard
government is connecting every
home, business, school and hospital
in Australia to the National
Broadband Network.
In the 21st century, broadband
internet is basic infrastructure:
Australian families rely on it and
Australian businesses need it.
Businesses all around Australia
need access to high-speed broadband
to remain competitive.
It’s become an essential utility—
like electricity or water, which is why
we believe that every Australian
deserves to have access to the NBN.
We have tasked NBN Co to
achieve the best value for money in
rolling out this massive infrastructure
investment.
It is constructing the NBN in the
fastest, most efficient and sensible
way by basing its decision-making
on geographic and engineering
considerations.
Taking any other approach would
cost more, and take longer.
It is important to remember that
once the NBN rollout is complete
that every Australian will be able
to access the benefits of highspeed internet in their homes and
businesses.
It must be remembered that
the Gillard Labor government is
fully committed to the NBN, while
Michael Keenan and Tony Abbott
have committed themselves to
stopping the NBN dead in its tracks.

Regarding the assertion that

fact that although this phenomena is

We’re not
nurses
RE: “Backyard births on the
rise” (Voice, Saturday April 21,
2012), the Australian College of
Midwives wishes to clarify that
midwifery is not a speciality of
nursing, as reported.
Midwifery is a profession in its
own right with a number of entry
pathways including post-graduate
studies and/or a three-year degree in
midwifery.
Midwives are qualified to provide
care across the antenatal, labour
and birth and postnatal period.
The World Health Organization
recognises the midwife as the most
appropriate person to care for lowrisk pregnant women. Research
suggests women want continuity
of care with a known midwife and
the ACM believes all women should
have access to a known midwife
regardless of risk.
The National Maternity Services
Plan recommends women should
have access to a range of safe
maternity services, including
midwifery-led models of care. If
the WA health minister seriously
worked towards implementing the
plan and facilitated access for eligible
midwives to birth women in a
variety of settings (home or hospital
as appropriate) women would have
more choice and not feel forced to
free-birth.

Fee limit catches
council short
by DAVID BELL
THERE is a $100,000 hole in
the Vincent council budget
after the Barnett government
suddenly changed rules
about how much councils can
charge for late rates.
The council is peeved and
unanimously voted to send a
letter to minister John Castrilli
“expressing its concern at
the lack of consultation” and
requesting he “treat local
government equitably and have
a single standard for state and
local government”.
Previously the council had
been allowed to charge people 11
per cent interest on late rates: the
longer recalcitrants take to pay,
the more the costs rack up. The
new legislation restricts interest
to seven per cent.
Mayor Alannah MacTiernan
says the change is unfair, with
WA government utilities such as
Synergy still allowed to charge
higher rates.
“It was done without any
forewarning to councils, so…
we’re going to lose $100,000
from our budget,” she says.
“Our view is what’s good for
the goose is good for the gander,
and Synergy and WaterCorp are
charging more.”
Also, good governance
requires any change should have
applied from next financial year.
“What there should be
is an agreement: The state
government should not impose a
burden on local government that
they are not willing to impose on
themselves.”
The mayor concedes some
projects planned for this year
may now be delayed, but she
couldn’t nominate which.
Still Vision in
Vincent
concedes that offers little rocksolid protection; or,
• adopt a streetscape policy,
which the council has tried
before but abandoned due to
the acrimony it caused in the
community.
Ms MacTiernan told the Voice
she’s sympathetic to the aims
of the WAPC—an organisation
she’d once led, as Labor
planning minister—which is to
pave the way for more units in
order to cater for the growing
number of singles and smaller
families in WA.
by STEVE GRANT
VINCENT VISION 2024 isn’t
dead, says mayor Alannah
MacTiernan, but it does need
emergency surgery.
Ms MacTiernan says a littleunderstood change to WA’s
R-codes (which control density)
threatens to undermine the
Vision’s aim of keeping highdensity development to major
roads.
The change, made by
the powerful WA planning
commission, relates to multiresidential developments
and had been behind her
council’s recent approval of
several controversial suburban
developments.
Ms MacTiernan told the Voice
developers recently cottoned
onto the new rule, which allows
them to squeeze as many oneand two-bedroom units onto
larger blocks as they can, as long
as they don’t occupy a larger
footprint than grouped housing
would use (think townhouses).
“This is why we approved
those developments, because
it would be unethical to refuse
them for the sake of looking
good when these are what the
rules are,” she said, noting the
powerful but unelected state
administrative tribunal would
have had no option but overturn
any council objection.
The approvals had prompted
former councillor Simon Chester

to complain the communityled Vision had been ripped up
(Vision ‘dead’ in Vincent, Perth
Voice, April 28, 2012).
But Ms MacTiernan says
there is a chance to salvage the
situation when Vincent’s new
planning scheme is approved
for advertising by WA planning
minister John Day.
She says there are at least four
options to explore:
• down-zone suburbs (but
the WAPC is unlikely to allow
that to happen);
• include more areas that
prohibit multi-residential
developments;
• increase the number
of houses on Vincent’s local
heritage list, although she

But she’s concerned the push
could lead to the loss of many
historic homes across Vincent,
particularly in Mt Hawthorn
and North Perth which feature
homes on large blocks.
She says she’s warned the
council about the brewing storm
(having a dig at the Voice for
missing the scoop because it was
more interested in Bayswater’s
infighting than the currently
harmonious Vincent), and that
the consequences of the change
weren’t completely understood
when the proposed planning

She’s hoping the Barnett

approval to advertise the new
scheme, complaining it’s been
sitting on the document for four
months now.
Mc MacTiernan says there’s
some risk that fl agging a
change will lead to a rush from
developers to demolish what
they can now, but the issue
needs community awareness
and support.

Catania bats for other side
Mr Catania voted in favour of the
development, but was outvoted by the
council of the day which regarded it as
too tall and too bulky. There were also
objections from locals.
Architect Steeg Banham said he
couldn’t comment on the SAT case but
confirmed Mr Catania had joined the
team after leaving the council.
“He was mayor before so he couldn’t
[represent the developer], that would
have been a confl ict of interest,” he said.
“He got on board after the election?”
the Voice asked. “Absolutely,” Mr Banham
said.
The Voice has called and texted Mr
Catania and is waiting to hear back.
Vincent councillors Warren McGrath
and Dudley Maier are the council
representatives dealing with Mr Catania
at the SAT. They’re prevented from saying

NICK CATANIA has a new job—
representing developers at the
powerful state administrative
tribunal.
During his time as Vincent mayor Mr
Catania sometimes found himself arguing
against big and bulky developments at
hearings in front of the SAT—the judicial
body applicants appeal to if they don’t
like the decision of their locally elected
council.
Since leaving behind the mayoral
chains last October Mr Catania has
crossed the fl oor and is representing a
developer who wants to build an eightstorey, 81-unit building on Newcastle
Street in West Perth.
At his final ever council meeting,
anything about proceedings, but we
asked Cr Maier what it was like to see the
former mayor working for the other side.
“I don’t know if it’s common
elsewhere,” he replied.
“As long as they’re not using any
information that is privy only to council
members... I don’t have a problem with
that.”
Cr Maier said to his knowledge
nothing about the development was
confidential: It had been debated in open
council and the report is available on the
council website.
As for the development itself, the
council is pushing the developers to
include a roof garden, more thermal
efficiency, solar power to light common
areas, rainwater harvesting and a
revamped design “to ameliorate the bulk
and mass of the building”.

HERE’S the story: We sent
photographer Matthew Dwyer to
the development site at the corner of
William and Newcastle Streets to take
a pic of this cute heritage house that’s
standing on an island, amidst a twostorey excavation.
The cottage is heritage-listed so the
builders have to leave it alone while
constructing the six-storey unit block.
Dwyer had a merry chat with the
builders and picked up the details of
the site’s official “public relations and
marketing coordinator”, Amy Cheang,
and that’s where things got weird.
When the Chook called Ms Cheang
to get details about the cottage, she told
us NW Construction owned the site
and it had retrospectively withdrawn
permission for us to take photos, and she
instructed us not to publish anything,
even though we don’t work for her or
NW Construction.
“We don’t want any media,” she said.
We explained there was nothing

RIVERSIDE Gardens is set
to get a dual-use cycle path,
following a series of close-calls
between speeding cyclists and
pedestrians.
The 160m section will connect
Memorial Drive and Riverside
Gardens carpark and cost $24,000.
It is part of Bayswater city
council’s River Path Plan, which
aims to connect missing links in the
picturesque riverside route.
Last year the council installed
signs at Bardon Park following a
spate of near-misses between dog
walkers. The move followed a Voice
report about a kelpie that had been
pole-axed in Robertson Park by a
speeding cyclist. The pooch suffered
two broken legs and a split snout.
Local Diane Temov says a
cyclist was recently fined for
clocking 56kmh in a school zone in
Scarborough: “The police believe
being hit by a bike at that speed
could potentially kill a person,” she
said.
“This cycle path is now being
used as a mode of transport at
various times, rather than a leisure
track. We have experienced similar
problems with cyclists in Bardon
Park near a children’s playground.”
Cr Sylvan Albert is pushing for
a dual-cycle path that runs from
Maylands into the city.
“I have experienced first-hand
the dangers of speeding cyclists,”
he said. “Contact can seriously
injure someone or, at worst, create
fatalities. I have seen good examples
of how this type of signage works.”
Bayswater council will consider
funding the cycle path in next year’s
budget.

Bayswater Cr on Team Barnett
S
YLVAN ALBERT is a cut above the
rest. The former hairdressing baron
has been formally endorsed as the
Liberal party candidate for Maylands at
next year’s state election.
The three-term Bayswater city councillor
will take on Labor incumbent Lisa Baker,
who won the seat in 2008 with 59 per cent
of the two-party preferred vote over Liberal
Ainslie Gatt.
Maylands has been a safe Labor seat since
1968 (although much smaller now following
one vote-one value redistributions in 2008)
and Albert appreciates hard graft is required
to wrest it from the reds.
“Despite requiring a 9.5 per cent swing,
winning the seat of Maylands is definitely
achievable,” he says.
“I am realistic, it will require time and
effort which I am committed to putting in.
“A priority for me is to ensure the
delivery and value-adding of local public
transport infrastructure because I know
how valuable this is to families, seniors and
individuals.”
The 48-year-old recently sold his
Maylands hairdressing business, which he
had owned for 20 years.
He is the chair of the Maylands Business
Association, director of a small property
holdings company and has lived in
Maylands for 20 years.
Premier Colin Barnett is full of praise for
his new recruit.
“He is passionate about the local area
and wants to be part of the Liberal team
which has introduced the highly successful
independent public schools program and
taken a hard line approach towards antisocial behaviour,” the premier said.
Ms Baker says she’s up for the fight:
“Electricity is up by 57 per cent with more
increases to come in the next few weeks, gas
is also up by 57 per cent and now water is
following the Barnett trend,” she said.

‘No Ark
How Do We Stay Enchanted’?
an exciting new exhibition
by
Helen Norton
In her new body of work, Norton asks the question - “How
do we remain enchanted? Man and beast are trying to
co-exist in a world of disintegrating spiritual, geographical,
ethical and genetic borders. The shake down is accelerated through gaping portals of information pouring into
our psyche every day on just how it all mutates, blow by
blow, minute by minute, leading to a sense of living with a
very slippery future. At times, ‘the ‘Áood’ or tidal wave of
complexity overwhelms”.
“I am drawing upon aspects of the bizarre story of Noah
and the great Áood and his one eyed clarity on ‘what to
do’ as disaster approached, in comparison to and alongside modern adaptations. From containing a jungle inside
a hanging and torn tarpaulin suspended in a desert; piling
cartoon animals and imagined hybrids inside a genetically modiÀed animalistic car, to Noah riding a tram down
a Melbourne street or the three bears plus one, playing
pandy with Noah on the edge of a waterfall while Goldilocks sulks for lack of attention – it all starts to make perfect
sense.”
Exhibition runs from 27th April till 27th May 2012
Norton Gallery is delighted to
be working with the Autism Association of Western

A Reagan-like arising
by STEPHEN POLLOCK
$999
MARK McGOWAN reckons Bob
Kucera can draw inspiration from
Ronald Reagan to snatch victory in Mt
Lawley at the state election next year.
The Labor candidate is 67—10 years
older than Liberal incumbent Michael
Sutherland.
But Mr McGowan says “Bob” is
indefatigable and has “twice the energy of
men in their thirties”.
“He will have no problems on the
campaign trail and is one of the most
energetic people I have ever met,” Mr
McGowan says.
“There are lots of great quotes about age
in Ronald Reagan’s biography.”
Reagan was 69 when he was won the US
presidency and remains the oldest person
to ever be elected to the post (although the
latter stages of his eight-year tenure were
marked by the onset of Alzheimer’s).
Mr Kucera and Mr McGowan visited
bowling clubs and retirement homes in
Yokine and Menora as part of the WA
opposition leader’s first official visit to the
marginal seat.
Mr McGowan says any rift between
Labor and Mr Kucera had long-healed.
The former police minister had quit the
party to sit as an independent after failing
to secure 2008 pre-selection due to his age
(at the time he was 63).
Mr Kucera admits to having been
initially apathetic when Eric Ripper tried to
cajole him into making a Labor comeback.
“I thought the party had reached an
impasse and we had stopped increasing
our appeal,” he said.
But when Mr McGowan called him, two
days after becoming Labor leader, he signed
up on the spot.
“Mark was like a breath of fresh air and
appeals to a wide range of voters from
young to old—he’s re-energised the party,”
he said.

Mr Kucera said he had not been offered
a frontbench spot.
“I’ve got an election to worry about,”
he laughed. “The key issue for Mt Lawley
voters will be cost of living, safety and
security, and transport.
“Also Labor have just proposed
legislation to make it easier for people to
cut through the red tape and open up small
bars—ideal for Beaufort Street.”
Mr Kucera, an assistant police
commissioner before entering politics, is
involved in several organisations. He chairs
Football West and is president of Council on
the Ageing WA.
“When I retired from politics I was like
a spinning wheel—I’m used to working
60-hour weeks,” he said

Fire-breathing felines!
‘The divide between rich
and poor is widening—
it’s not right’
P
ARTS
STEPHEN POLLOCK
OOR Gina Rinehart. The
billionaire heiress has irked her
offspring, the West Australian
newspaper and now Perth artist
Patrick Doherty.
“Come on, who needs to be that rich?”
he vents.
Doherty has taken capitalism to task in
his new exhibition Tales of Hierarchy.
In his drawing Terra Australis 2012,
boat people scramble up cliffs, a firebreathing cat terrorises natives and the
ground is strafed with fl ames.
His contempt for rapacious magnates
and politicians is obvious.
“My work is not overtly political, but
I do want to make an ethical point on
the way capitalists are abusing land in
Western Australia,” he says.
“Mining companies are exploiting
indigenous land to make millions in
profits.
“The divide between rich and poor is
widening—it’s not right.”
Doherty’s work has a childlike
candour: bright primary colours mingle
with stick men and castles.
His drawings are crammed with
people and nuance—like a sophisticated
Where’s Wally.
But nestling inside the jejune imagery
is a strong narrative.
“I’m never going to be a great painter
in the classical sense—my art has a
retarded six-year-old quality to it—
but there is a deeper message lurking
underneath,” he says.
Doherty is inspired by US artists
Cy Twombly and Ida Applebroog,
Fremantle Chamber Orchestra
Mark Coughlan (pianist, conductor)
Rebecca White (violinist)
who specialise in socialcommentary.
The 31-year-old majored
in drawing and printmaking at Curtin University
in 2004.
Since graduating he has
caught the eye of gallery
owners across Australia,
securing exhibitions at
Fremantle Arts Centre,
Sydney’s Museum of
contemporary Arts and
Melbourne’s Karen
Woodbury Gallery.
The Hamersley artist is
now entering his creative
prime and was selected by
the Australian Art Collector
in their 50 Things Collectors
Need to Know issue.
But Doherty says
plaudits do not pay the
bills.
“The GFC has hit the
art world pretty hard:
not many people have
disposable income to spend
on art,” he grumbles.
“It can be pretty tough to
make ends meet, but I guess
money problems are all part of an artist’s
apprenticeship.”
As well as being hard-up, over the past
few years Doherty has enjoyed a tussle
with the grog.
His 2011 exhibition Year of the Wagon
was a wry take on his Oliver Reed-like
habits.

SHOPPING for underwear isn’t as simple as
it used to be. The choice on offer is mindboggling – and can be overwhelming, so
it’s a real relief to know you can get expert
advice. Katherine and daughter Helen opened
Katherine’s Corsetry in Morley 29 years ago.
They’ve seen fashions come and go and have
kept up with all the trends.
If you’re looking for a Mother’s Day gift,
there’s lots of lovely ideas in store, including
cosy chenille dressing gowns, pretty nighties
and comfy PJ sets. And of course there’s
all the best quality brands on offer including
Fayreform, Oroton, Lovable and Triumph, just to
name a few.
Helen says that underwear has become an
important part of a woman’s wardrobe. “How
it fits for comfort and structure, how it relates
to what you’re wearing, these are all important
to consider. For example, small changes in bra
shape can make dramatic changes in bust line
– we can provide expert advice about what will
best suit.”

Golden Ravioli has a heritage in Perth stretching back to 1951,
when Carlo Lenzarini stepped off the boat at Fremantle to start a
new life in Australia.
Hailing from the mountainous Garfagnana region in Tuscany,
Carlo put his shoulder to the plough to farm the land. He was later
joined by brothers Stefano, Florindo and Narciso, who had little to
offer but sweat and true grit.
In 1958 the brothers’ hard work and steely determination had
paid off: They opened Romany Restaurant in Northbridge, which
quickly gained a reputation for its authentic Tuscan dishes.
Seeking to build on the growing love affair with the fresh pasta
they served, the brothers purchased Italian machines to make
ravioli and tortellini, and opened a retail outlet next door, which they
called Golden Ravioli.

Golden Ravioli retails fresh and pre-cooked
pastas and sauces and has won awards
The Lenzarini family sold the restaurant in 1988 but kept Golden
Ravioli, which is now managed by a new generation, intent on
developing it into Australia’s pre-eminent brand for fresh pasta.
Golden Ravioli retails fresh and pre-cooked pastas and sauces
and has won awards and accolades for its quality and range. All
pastas are available in convenient take-home containers, ready to
heat and serve: It’s fast food like you’ve never experienced before.
Lenzarini brothers had little more than a dream and determination
when they arrived in a strange country that spoke a different
language, but which promised reward for hard work. They have
every reason to be proud of what they have achieved.

OUTH FREMANTLE is
starting to resemble South
Delhi, with three new
Indian/Nepalese restaurants
opening recently, taking the
number to four in as many blocks.
Bring it on I say, especially after a
lip-smacking meal at Darbar Indian
Nepalese.
It was on a par with a rooftop
meal in Kathmandu some years ago,
a benchmark culinary memory in the
D’Anger house.
Instead of a backdrop of
the Himalayas the Darbar’s is
disconcertingly Italian, with the new
owners simply taking on the old La
Dolce Vita, on Douro Road, columns
and all.
But we were there for the food
not the decor and not a morsel
disappointed, from the subzi pakora
($6) and aloo paratha ($4.90) to the
dessert.

Things got off to a good start
with complimentary papadams, a
mint and coriander dip and a mango
chutney and a dish of a savoury
puffed rice, garlic and dried onion.
I’ve had many disappointments
with pakora: They are often stodgy
and tasteless but when the subzi
arrived it was love at first bite.
The besan batter was crisp and
spicy, with a nutty fl avour and the
vegetable perfectly cooked.
The paratha was soft, with a nice
oily glean and the potato filling
delicious but subtle.
The chef’s special chicken
($16.50) was recommended by our
Chilean waiter when we asked about
Nepalese traditional food.
The rich tomato sauce was packed
Little

with spicy fl avour, but not hot, and it
brought back memories of Nepalese
nights.
The Aloo gobhi ($12.50) was great,
although in hindsight the tomatobased caulifl ower and potato dish
was a little too similar to the chicken
and we should have stretched the
repertoire.
The vegetable biryani ($11.50) was
• Photos by Dave D’Anger
a perfect accompaniment to both, the
golden rice spicy in its own right but
not overpowering.
I was too full for dessert and
had to be wheeled home for a lay
down and a stomach massage
just to breathe, but my UK-born
beloved thoughtfully took home a
rice pudding (with cashew nut and
cardamon).
Like a gentleman he did wait half
an hour before diving in, coming
up with a smile after the first taste.
If I’d been able to roll myself off the
couch I might have tackled him for a
spoonful.
Adding to the night’s experience
the wait staff were friendly and
helpful—and there was no corkage
charge.
The Darbar is sure to become a
favourite with locals and I reckon
when word gets out they’ll be
queuing out the door, so get in early.

The Bliss Noodle Bar in Mt

fact it’s not even a Kerri-Anne,
more of a Julia Gillard in a twopiece.
But would the fl avours
transcend its looks?
The Voice food police decided
to investigate.
Bliss’ menu was a mix of
noodles (combination ho fun),
wok-tossed dishes (sizzling

kangaroo fillet).
Er’ indoors ordered the
chicken-sweetcorn soup ($6.50)
and shanghai noodles ($14.90),
while I went for the san choy

($21.50).
The interior was basic: banal
chairs, muzak and photographs
of dishes affixed to the window.
But it was unpretentious and
had a certain primitive charm.
The Asian waitress, who
prolonged her smile for the
duration of the meal, was
friendly and attentive.
The good lady was feeling
a bit poorly, so the comforting
chook and sweetcorn soup met
with her approval.
“It was piping hot and
packed with creamy chicken and
sweetcorn,” she reported with a
wan smile.
My san choy bow was a bit
of a disappointment: the diced
chicken was bland and the plum
sauce meek.

My bliss thai—duck breast
tossed with garlic, chilli and

The sauce, hotter than a

succulent slices of roast quacker.
Complementing the duck was
a medley of carrots, snow peas
and onion.
The dish had a lovely

It went well with my bowl of
thick, steamed noodles.
Meanwhile, ‘er indoors
was marauding her Shanghai

The tawny-coloured dish,
emitting a subtle heat, was the
Asian equivalent of comfort

AUTHENTIC NEPALESE CUISINE
Himalayan hits the peaks
Nepalese Cuisine
is unique
Nepalese cuisine will invigorate your senses as it
combines great culinary traditions of the neighbouring
countries of China, Tibet and India.
The Nepalese are descendants of three major
migrations from India, Tibet, North Burma
and Yunnan via Assam.
It incorporates the great diversity of its cultural mix.
The ethnic diversity with Tibetan, Gurkha, Sherpas and
Brahmans all contribute to the unique and tasty culinary
nature. Himalayan Nepalese Restaurant and Cafe is
now also offering gluten-free ingredients for the
gluten intolerant individuals.
Nepalese Set Lunch Thali Special
From $15.50 - Wed to Sun

Himalayan Nepalese Restaurant and Cafe
introduces the unique tastes of the Himalayas right
in the middle of Victoria Park and Inglewood. The
restaurants provide a friendly, tranquil environment
where you will hear the haunting sounds of the
Himalayas. Sit back and enjoy the freshly created
taste sensations. Nepalese cuisine will invigorate
your senses as it combines the great culinary
traditions of China and India. The Nepalese are
descendants of major migrations from India, Tibet,
North Burma and Yunnan.
The menu contains a nice mix of chicken, beef,
goat and fish curry-style dishes (machha tareko,
khashi ko tandruk, Himalayan hot lamb).
Our reviewer visited recently and shared chicken
momo ($14), chef’s special goat curry ($20.50) and
khashi sekeko (marinated lamb chops $22).
“Momo is the Nepalese equivalent of steamed
dim sum: tubby turrets of meat encased in dough.
They’re slightly spicier than their oriental cousins and
garnished with ginger, garlic and coriander. These
were superior specimens, tasting fresh and light.”
“My khashi sekeko, four French lamb chops
marinated with yoghurt and Nepalese spices, was
delicious. They were cooked in a tandoori oven and
the lamb coated in a fragrant array of spices that
enhanced the meat.”
The slow-cooked mild goat curry tasted delicious
when swirled in the tomato and onion sauce.
Himalayan Nepalese is off to a flying start with
great dishes, modest prices and good service.
Just make sure you book ahead - it’s bound to be
popular!

JE

colleague tells me
he never looks at
He doesn’t know what he’s
missing because you can find
delightful gems with an upward glance—
as I discovered at this Menora home in
McPherson Street.
This has all the classic features you’d
expect, including jarrah fl oors, leadlight
and stained-glass windows and doors—
and some of the most beautiful ceilings
I’ve seen.
I pictured myself laying in bed in
the main bedroom tracing the intricate
fl owers in a pattern that has more than a
passing nod to earlier period-pressed tin
ceilings, but less fussy.
The huge formal lounge and dining
room also have gorgeous ceilings—with
matching architraves.
The two rooms are separated by lovely
French doors with a classic art deco brick
fireplace in the lounge.
The doors allow the space to be
closed for winter cosiness or opened for
entertaining.
A rear extension offers a huge openspace kitchen/living/family area fl ooded
with light from the banks of windows
and French doors that open onto the
delightfully olde worlde garden of
this 810sqm block (you’ve got to love
Menora’s preservation of big blocks).
The thoroughly modern
kitchen has a split-level stove,
a huge pantry and plenty of
granite bench tops to whip up
tasty delights.
Although the pizza oven, just
off a covered patio, is perfect
for easy meals when the tribe
drops in.
Steps lead to a terraced
garden with rose bushes and
lawn and a huge garage with a
large workshop that could easily
be converted into a studio.
This is Menora so there’s
plenty of big old trees all
around, and a garden gate leads
to a private park, hidden by the
houses that back onto it.
This “secret” garden is a great spot
for the kids to run wild and has been the
scene of many a neighbourly Christmas
and New Year’s party.
Just off Walcott Street, McPherson
Street is close to a swag of shops and a
plentitude of cafes and restaurants.

Worried about keeping your home safe and
secure while you’re on holidays,
at work or even in the house?
The most important item in making your home safe
from intruders is often overlooked when security is
considered. Of course it’s your meterbox!
The meterbox is like the heart of your home - without
power you have no lights, no cordless phone, no electricity and in some cases no security system
Thieves can switch off your power at the meterbox
just to see if you have an active alarm system. Don’t
rely on back-up batteries - they frequently fail because the use by date has been overlooked. Thieves
would much rather go elsewhere than rob your home
if the meterboxes are professionally locked up by the
Meterbox Man.
Locking your meterbox is recommended by the
Police, Western Power, Alinta Gas, RAC and all
insurance companies. So for peace of mind and a
safer home call the Meterbox Man.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)
The call to do what you know you need
to do, to live the future as you envision
it, is stronger than all that seems to be getting in
your way. With the Sun in Taurus, you have access
to more follow-through than usual. Challenge brings
out the best in you – again and again.
TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)
The celestial power of the Sun is with
you. To choose to use it to wrangle with
disputed ideas and ideals, wouldn’t be a good
use of opportunity. Life is inviting you to add your
strength to helping to make important changes
become real. This is no time to dig your heels in.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)
Venus has you flirting and playing and finding friends to flirt and play
with. There is no way you are going to succumb
to the dull and the dense. Be careful not to get
above yourself and slip into the land of erroneous
judgements. Keep it playful but also smart and kind.
CANCER (June 22 – July 22)
Stability has been somewhat forced.
As you fall into the soup, so all that’s
real surfaces. As all that’s real surfaces, life supports
you in every way. Fear envisages the worst. Reality
is not as bad as imagined. Shake yourself. Wake up
and make the most of a new day.
LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)
The deeper darker themes of
Taurus, which is where the Sun is,
are about appetites and desires. As the Sun moves
through here, so we are asked to look at the nature
of our wants. Is it true that lions want to be the centre
of attention? Or do they need their manes stroked?
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
Available options aren’t easy but they
are powerful and right. You are being
supported in very real ways. Your illusions are
getting short-shrift but that’s how it should be. The
moment you are integrated, the world will integrate
around you. Stay solid and clear.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
Venus is softening you. She is in
Gemini, sending reminders your way
to giggle and play - and not get too caught up in
whatever difficulties life is blessing you with. Heed
her friendliness and smiles. Existential angst has its
limits. Come back to delicious happiness.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
The Moon is moving towards
fullness in Scorpio. She is shining
her silvery light into your hidden home. As intensity
builds, so the possibilities for experiencing great
beauty increase. Stay with feeling. Stay away from
theatrics and emotionality. Feel your heart opening.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
To slip into a conservative stance simply
from the desire to play safe, would be a
dubious move. Counter-phobia, living dangerously
just for the sake of living dangerously, is just as
crazy. Take only challenges that are offered. There’s
one on the table now. Consider it.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
Keep your intuition functioning in the
midst of all your pragmatic affairs.
It is not out of place in the midst of the marketplace. Life is flowing and dancing around you like
a mountain stream. Dance and flow too - and you’ll
defuse, disarm and charm all challenges.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
It would be easy to lock horns where
there is opposition. We become what
we fight, so think about it. Life is supplying you with
inordinate sources of support. Recognise the offers
that are being made. Let struggles be little dark
clouds that fly on by. You be the sky.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
Even if you don’t actually feel
it, you know that we live in an
interconnected spider’s web of ecological interdependence. Holistic, paradoxical logic, is closer to
truth than are dogma and blinkered linear grooves.
Know your stuff. Challenge your doubters.
