Jet Packs available soon
Martin Aircraft has announced that
it will be releasing its Jetpack to the
world in 2016. It is an amazing piece
of engineering that has been summarized into a wearable package.
has a 200 horsepower low vibration
engine that will give you speeds of
about 74 kilometers an hour. It car-
ries a standard fuel capacity of 45
litres, comparable to a small car and
will offer a flying range of up to 50
kilometres. They have been designing it with safety being the number
one priority and set limits on many
of its specifications. The altitude is
set for just 900 metres above ground
and the pack, although wearable,
has been designed as a full aircraft
complete with landing gear and cage
surround for the pilot. So what will
it cost? Martin have said that one of
these cool toys will cost you 150000
US Dollars in 2016 and in South Africa that equates to about 1,8 million
Rands, dependant on the exchange
rate. Sure it will alleviate the hassle
to drive to work or exit a crowded
stadium after the game, but for that
sort of price we’ll wait a bit longer.
Prosthetic Hand – Made in SA
A low cost, quality prosthetic hand
has been designed and made in
South Africa. The hand was designed
in Cape Town and 3D printed in
Bloemfontein. The project was initiated by Mechanical Engineer, Doctor
George Vicatos from the University of
Cape Town, where he spent months
designing and drawing up plans for
the prosthetic hand.
Once completed Vicatos sent his
plans to the Central University of
Technology in Bloemfontein where
they 3D printed each piece in full
detail and sent them back to Cape
Town. The final product was a mechanically operated prosthetic hand
that was more affordable and perfectly suited for the South African
public health sector. Their most recent project prior to the hand was
heart valves. This is really impressive
and a sure sign of the bright minds
available in South Africa. Vicatos is
yet to test his design on a human
patient, but there is firm interest already from people who would benefit
from his invention.
Keys, what keys?
South African hotels will soon throw
away keys, key cards and all the above
as they move towards software which

The pimple, the rose and the utopia

never professed to be in any way
shape or form a philosopher.
For, what is that exactly? We all
have a philosophy (or philosophies) by which we live. And far be it
for me to dictate to others how they
should live their lives. I have always
maintained and have been abundantly aware that the world is as it
is, and not as I am…
And I won’t ever mean to sound
like a Khalil Gibran or a Deepak
Chopra – heaven knows I am not
nearly as insightful and visionary as
they are but, many years ago I, like
many of us at age 20-something,
and ready to rule the world, thought
I was very profound when I wrote
one of my many student theatre
productions. The tagline for a HIV/
Aids awareness programme we ran at
the then Peninsula Technikon, now
CPUT read: “A rose minus one petal
is still a thing of beauty; it is merely
a question of perspective…”
I have noticed that the emphasis
of people on outer beauty and outer
“perfection” has become more of an
obsession. Case in point: a pimple
on your back is less likely to bother
you the way a pimple on your face
would, right? The nature of man?
The power of advertising? Double
ditto for emphases on corporeal acquisitions versus spiritual ones. It’s
as if we have all become idiotic. We
only see the material being and are
unable to see what evil lurks in the
hearts and the souls of man…as if
the yin and yang do not live together
in one heart. For, if we cover up the
blemish with make-up it is perceived
not to be there. If we cover the abuse
in a household with a well-maintained garden and a perfectly white
picket fence, the perception is that
all is well within the household.
It just so happened, coinciden-

tally, that I received an e-mail from
my dear friend and physiotherapist
who is the only person “allowed” to
send me chain mails as hers are always inspirational in the true sense
of the word (well I guess the word
“inspirational” also is a question of
perspective), but she knows me well
enough to know what kind of philosophies I am inclined towards. Here
is an edited version of that mail:
“There is an innocence inside us
that is so pure and untouched, like
the core of a rose that is just beginning to bloom. We feel that innocence and purity deeply protected
by the portions of us that we had to
close off, like a doorway to a sacred
room. This doorway, and the room it
protected, needed to be locked and
even hidden from a world that was
harsh and filled with fear.
Now we are beginning to feel that
innocence and purity, and we want
to open the door and allow that essence to fill our body and flow out
into the world. However, we don’t
know if we can protect that innocence and purity once it is set loose

into a reality that does not yet fully
love.
If we open this door, will the remaining darkness rush in and extinguish the light? If we open this door,
will the purity and love be lost in the
shield we have created to protect it?
If we incorporate these qualities of
purity and innocence into our body,
will it become lost in the remaining
fear and protectiveness?
Yes, we fear that all of these things
will happen. But, if we base our decision on this fear, have we chosen fear
over purity and innocence? How do
we protect that which is virgin to this
harsh world? Must we wait until the
world is not quite as discordant and
more harmonious?
There are so many questions, but
we ask them from our mind. We
need to ask our heart. We need to
ask this embryo of purity expanding
in our High Heart what we should
do…the roses that bloom when the
atmosphere is not perfect suffer the
harshness of a reality not yet ready
for their gift. However, some brave
ones must ‘test the waters’ to see if

it is safe for the others to bloom, as
well.
The simple rose does not know
fear. The Rose is still a bud, but it is
soon to open.
The transition of our consciousness is much like the opening of a
rose. For many eons we, the members of Earth, have placed our consciousness on the outside of the rose.
The core of the rose was a mystery
to us.
And so we began the long journey
to the centre of the rose, the centre
of ourselves…
We became safe deep within
ourselves. We were no longer alone
there.
As we looked around us, we could
see that there were still roses that
appeared to be independent from
us. However, when we placed our
attention upon them, they lovingly
and willingly opened their heart to
us, as we did to them. There were no
secrets; there was no fear; there was
only unity and love. We were home!”

Travelling & Living with the stars
What is your favourite travel destination, and why?
The Himalayas. I’ve travelled around
Manila in India, and Nepal’s Annapurna region, and can’t wait to go
back to explore more of the range.
It’s a culturally fascinating area, and
the beauty and sheer scale of the
mountains is overwhelming.
Matthew Wild
I
n this regular column, we chat to
some of SA’s premier personalities about their travel experiences and favourite local pastimes
and haunts.
This week we catch up with theatre
and opera director extraordinaire,
MATTHEW WILD, who’s latest foray
into that particular art form known
as the musical, ‘West Side Story’, will
be landing at the Artscape Opera
House on Thursday, July 23. (Read
more about the production in this
week’s edition of #TheatreBuzz, on
page 5.)
What was your first international
trip, and what do you remember
most vividly about the experience?
My mother saved up to take me (a
culture-mad 14 year-old at the time)
on a trip to London in the early
1990s. I loved the art galleries and
historical sites, but getting my first
taste of theatre in the West End had
the biggest impact on me. We saw
‘Cats’, ‘Phantom’, ‘Les Mis’, ‘Sunset
Boulevard’ with Patti Lupone, and I
even managed to score a standing
room ticket for Marilyn Horne’s farewell performance at the Royal Opera
House in Covent Garden.
What is the first thing you usually
do when you arrive at your destination and you’re trying to get acclimated?
If I’m travelling for business and
crossing time zones, I try to get onto
destination time as soon as I’m on
the flight, and get some fresh air and
sunlight when I arrive in my new
neighbourhood. When I’m backpacking, I generally don’t pre-book anything except the flight, and play it by
ear when I touch down.
What for you is usually the best way
to soak up the culture you’re in?
Make friends with locals who can get
you off the tourist trail; and choose
land or water travel over domestic
flights whenever possible. I spent
three months travelling across South
America by bus and boat in my midtwenties, and have never been happier.
Flying – love it, or hate it?
I quite enjoy flying, and normally use
the time in the air to catch up on a
bit of work and a lot of movies. On
the very rare occasions when I get
to sit nearer the front of the plane,
I love it.
What has been your favourite cuisine that you have discovered on
your travels?
North Indian. You can have mindblowingly good food wherever you
find yourself for under R30.
You’ve got exactly R48 in your wallet. Where do you go for lunch in
Cape Town and in Joburg, and what
Wild in Bolivia
do you have?
In Cape Town, New York Bagels (just
around the corner from my apartment, and the Fugard Theatre) for
a bacon, avo and tomato bagel. In
Joburg, I’d probably stick to a flat
white and croissant at Father Coffee
in Braamfontein.
Ideal night out: watching an opera
before hitting the town in Madrid or
Berlin.
Ideal night in: staying glued to the
couch with my significant other, with
a bottle of good wine and reruns of
‘30 Rock’, ‘Veep’ or ‘Arrested Development’.
What is your speciality in the kitchen?
I do a pretty mean rare ostrich steak.
What makes life worth living?
Having adventures, staying curious
and doing work that you believe in.
Describe your ideal night in, and
out.

Good Hope FM turns 50 and plans to take over July
As the first commercial radio station in Cape Town to reach the 50year mark, Good Hope FM plans to
celebrate for their entire ‘birthday
month’ of July to honour this iconic
achievement.
Reaching this milestone is a significant feather their cap and Good
Hope FM sees it as an opportunity
to reflect on top achievements and
also to strengthen the brand even
more. “We are on a constant mission to reinvent ourselves and to
stay ahead of the curve, but we are
also proud of our past, knowing that
radio and entertainment industry
heavyweights like Mark Gillman, Riaan Cruywagen, Randall Abrahams,
Zuraida Jardine, Jeannie D and more
recently Nick Hamman all launched
their careers and got noticed first
atGood Hope FM,” says Good Hope
FM Station Manager, Brendan Ficks.
“As a brand we are an integral part
of Cape Town culture and heritage
and we intend to keep it that way,
so to commemorate this exciting occasion I’d like to personally invite all
our loyal listeners to celebrate with
us, because we wouldn’t be here
without them,” adds Ficks.
The race to gain and retain listeners is never-ending and was brought
about largely by the deregulation
and liberalisation of broadcasting
in the late 1990s when commercial
radio licences were granted to eight
new radio stations, however Good
Hope FM managed to survive and
thrive.
A jam-packed calendar of celebratory activities for the month
includes: ten fun days of live broadcasts for the ‘Suck it, we’re 50!’ campaign where listeners are encouraged
to pop in and meet their favourite
DJs; the announcement of a brand
new weekend show ‘The Full House’
co-hosted by dynamic duo Lalla Hirayama and Taryn Louch; and on-air
birthday giveaways and supporting
the ‘Souper Heroes’ drive to donate
67 litres of soup for Madiba Day.
Celebrations will culminate at a big
‘5.0 Gold’ themed birthday party for
listeners and VIPs.
Brand new weekend show ‘The
Full House’ is going live this Sunday, July 5 from 9am to 12pm with
co-hosts South African celebrity,
dancer, actor and TV presenter, Lalla Hirayama, and entertainer, entrepreneur and writer, Taryn Louch.
Together, they will entertain listeners on their weekly show, which will
largely be broadcast from the SABC
studios in Johannesburg and promises to be lots of high energy fun
as the two will deliver all the latest
gossip and industry news, first hand.
The dynamic duo’s first show will
be broadcast live from Bay Harbour
Market, Hout Bay and listeners are
invited to pop in and say hello.

Concert in the Park ended up raising in excess of R450000 for Operation Hunger. More significant than the
fundraising, however, was the complete
integration of the audience, with black
and white dancing side by side, and the
peaceful mood that prevailed amongst
all. “Integrated audiences were a no-no,”
recalls radio DJ Alex Jay. The artists were
up for it; the venue was up for it, but the
crowd made the show. Real South Africans! It was their day!”

experience of black and white musicians

THEATRE ON THE BAY
‘Fantastic 50’, starring Ian and Viv Von Memerty
Until July 12
Q&A with IAN VON MEMERTY
When you started out as a performer, did you ever
image that in the future you’d be celebrating the kind
of career you have had thus far?
I was so naïve! I really thought it was like Mickey
Rooney and Judy Garland (which by the way I had never
heard of). One of the joys of my career has been that
I have never played the prediction game. New things
come up – form outside and internally and I follow
them and more than 30 years later, I am still discovering
and learning.
What can audiences look forward to with ‘Fantastic
50’?
Aside from a night of great entertainment, I think three
words that would best describe the show are, funny - it
really has loads of laugh out loud comedy sequences;
glamour – viv has costumes that any woman would kill
for; and honesty –we are quite open about the agonies
and joys of our journey through parenting, partnering,
and performing.
What was the response like in Joburg?
Of all the shows I have done, this one has moved people
more than any other. If Ian Von Memerty has a brand it
is as the “all round entertainer” and this show has all of
that, but is an emotional and professional collaboration
unlike any other I have done. We got so much feedback about “being reminded about love”; and “being
delighted and humbled.” So I suppose in one word it
is fulfilling.
What would you say has been the main ingredient in
your recipe of longevity?
Work and versatility, but more than anything, I think
it is work - the ability to keep studying, learning new
things; ensuring my last performance was my best. My
only natural talent was as a pianist and every pianist
knows that is just the starting line. As a dancer, singer,
comic, writer – all of that I started late. So work (and
the work ethic of a Germanic Calvinist).
What’s up next for the Von Memertys?
Well, we are planning our next partnership show, looking at why duos make magic, from Gershwin to Lennon
and McCartney, provisionally called ‘Synergy’. My next
one man show is ‘Keyboard Kings’, a showcase of the
great composer/lyricists from Fats Waller to John Legend. And I am in the process of directing ‘Superskouspel’, which for the first time will be in a stadium for
25000 people. So a smallish challenge there.
Ian and Viv Von Memerty in ‘Fantastic 50’
‘Twee Vir Die Prys Van Een’
‘The Vortex’
July 15 to 26
July 28 to August 8
Pieter Toerien productions will be presenting Cape Town City Ballet in Marc Goldberg’s dance adaptation of Noel Coward’s
hugely controversial play ‘The Vortex’ at
the end of July, running into August.
The ballet explores themes of drug addiction in 1920s high society, adultery,
aging and dysfunctional family dynamics
over the course of a weekend in the country home of David and Florence Lancaster.
We follow Florence through the return
of her son, Nicky, and his new found fiancé
Bunty from Paris and the gradual understanding that Nicky is harbouring a dark
secret. Florence’s obsession with youth
and beauty is displayed in her constant affairs with much younger men, in this case
the dashing Tom, her current lover and a
school friend of her son’s, which proves to
be a greater challenge than anticipated.
All this and more culminates in an explosion that irrevocably changes the lives
of those involved.
Musically the audience will experience
the unspoken tensions in the production
by the use of juxtaposing composers. Coward’s live recordings of hits like ‘Poor Little
Rich Girl’, ‘I went to a Marvelous Party’
and ‘Mad About The Boy’ are combined
with Mexican electronic composer Murcof’s very atmospheric and sophisticated
style to create a varied and sometimes
chilling canvas of the human perspective,
while working in the frame of Coward’s
glamour, frivolity and opulence of the era.
The cast of ‘Twee Vir Die Prys Van Een’
A star-studded, multi award winning ensemble
of Afrikaans actors stars in this fresh, smartly humorous and surprising comedy about love, life
and the painful truths that often exist right under our noses.
‘Twee Vir Die Prys Van Een’, presented by
Kosie House of Theatre, stars Hannes Muller of
Groet die Grotman’ (the Afrikaans version of
Defending The Caveman’) fame in the lead role.
Appearing alongside the actor are legendary comedic actress Lizz Meiring and Michelle Botha,
star of various stage dramas and musicals, as well
as the Kyknet TV show ‘Getroud Met Rugby’, all
of them directed by Neels Clasen.
In the production, the audience meets Walter
Muller), a painter who arrives at a well-to-do
business man’s house to paint his study. Walter
s actually a struggling, but immensely ambitious

actor who has turned to painting as a means to
put food on the table.
Mercia (Meiring) is the businessman’s pretentious, holier than thou wife who finds herself
in a painful predicament when Janie (Botha),
the wife of her scheming, out of wedlock lover,
shows up and threatens to expose the affair.
Janie wants to tell Mercia’s husband about his
wife’s torrid extra-marital activities, but Mercia
will stop at nothing to prevent this from happening.
The hapless Walter – the unemployed actor/
painter – finds himself dragged into the lurid
mess, with humorous, surprising and fatal results.
‘Twee Vir Die Prys Van Een’ is sophisticated,
yet identifiable comedy at its best.

W
hen John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of
the human resistance,
sends Sgt. Kyle Reese
(Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke)
and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a
fractured timeline. Now, Sgt. Reese
finds himself in a new and unfamiliar version of the past, where he
is faced with unlikely allies, including a new T-800 terminator, the
Guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger),
dangerous new enemies, and an
unexpected new mission: To reset
the future…
As moviegoers know all too well,
in 1984, a cyborg arrived from the
future. He was called the Terminator. Among the millions enthralled
by this new cinematic icon were
producers David Ellison and Dana
Goldberg, their own filmmaking
future still ahead of them.
As Ellison recalls: “The ‘Terminator’ franchise - and really James
Cameron - is a seminal part of why
I got into filmmaking in the first
place; to me, he’s simply one of the
greatest filmmakers of all time. I
think ‘Terminator 2’ reinvented the
modern day tent pole. So, for me
to get to work on a franchise that
is literally something I fell in love
with as a kid, and which led to my
wanting to become a filmmaker, is
just a dream come true.”
The producer insists that their
film is not a remake, nor a reboot;
it’s not even a sequel. “It’s really a
reimagining based on the Cameron
source material. Viewers don’t have
to be familiar with any of the previous films at all - this is definitely
a stand-alone. But that being said,
for the fans who have seen the first
couple of films, there are some
great Easter eggs in there. Exploiting the inherent nature of time
travel, we go off on a divergent
timeline to take these characters
that audiences and I grew up with
in a completely new direction,”
says Ellison.
First on the roster, the title character himself, brought to iconic life
again by Arnold Schwarzenegger. “I don’t think you can make
a ‘Terminator’ movie without Arnold,” suggests Taylor. “Certainly,
I couldn’t imagine it without him.
There’s something about the way
he and Cameron built that character and then within the two movies explored such different sides
of that character that he basically
set the parameters for that world
– that mythology means it would
be really hard for me to think of a
‘Terminator’ movie that let go of
him.”
“I was very happy to be involved,” admits Schwarzenegger.
“I got a phone call telling me that
David and Megan Ellison had acquired the rights and the first thing
I thought was, ‘Finally they are doing another one. And finally I am
again in the movie.’”

For Mike, it was never just
about the money. Or the women,
or the parties, or the fame. It was
his passion. And the crew he left
behind? They were the best friends
he ever had.
Describing the new story, Tatum
says, “The first movie was more
about him rejecting that life because he feared maybe it was holding him back from seeing what else
he could do. But now that he’s
stepped away and some time has
passed, he remembers everything
Fri 03 – Thurs 09 July
that was good and cool and fun
about it and, most of all, about
the guys who were on that wild
adventure with him. It might not
have been perfect and neither were
they, but he loved those guys and
they had some great times. Mike
has been working very hard since
the closing frame of the first movie,
and we catch up with him at the
point where he realizes he needs a
little bit of that old mojo. He needs
some of that crazy life to shake
things up for him again.”

Fooding around with
Jenny Morris
@jennymorrischef
A
s I sit here, my feet feel like
two frozen blocks of ice. I
need some extra calories to
burn to keep them thawed
and I can think of nothing better to
drive away the cold than a huge big
steaming bowl of delicious, chunky
soup - I like to chew my soup as well
as sip it. I want a liquid dish with
lots to chew. It has to be robust and
tasty.
Actually, not just tasty; I want delicious, with meat and vegetables.
I want it to confuse my guests. It
must be between a soup and a stew.
I want a lot of happy mouths around
my table, and by extension yours.
Let’s do some one pot wonders!
Let’s cook!
Smoked paprika potato soup
Serves 6
A touch of smoked paprika gives this
soup a wonderful lift, and the salty
bacon and fresh thyme just brings it
all together. Wish I was there to see
you happily slurping away.
Ingredients:
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 5 leeks, white part only, finely
sliced
• 5 cloves crushed garlic
• 4 large potatoes, peeled and
thinly sliced
• 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves
• ¾ teaspoon smoked paprika
• 800g chopped tinned tomatoes
• 1 litre chicken soup
• Salt
• Freshly ground black pepper
• 1/3 cup roughly chopped soup
celery leaves
• Extra 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
leaves
• 1 cup chopped crispy streaky
bacon
Ingredients:
Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan.
Add the leeks, garlic, potato, thyme
and smoked paprika, and cook gently until soft, without browning
please. Add the tomatoes and cook
for 5 minutes. Then add the stock
and cook for a further 15 minutes,
giving it a good stir every so often.
Season with salt and pepper and
cook for 10 minutes more. Then add
some spicy croutons for soups and
salads. You can make as many as you
think you will need, and there’s no
need to deep-fry.
Heat the oven to 180°C. Brush olive
oil over slices of French bread, ciabatta or ordinary sliced bread, then
cut each slice into 4 or more. Shake
over some smoked paprika, chilli
powder and a little salt, and bake on
a baking tray till golden and crisp.

Smoked paprika potato soup
the chopped celery leaves and extra
thyme.
Ladle the soup into bowls, top with
crispy bacon and serve with crusty
French bread. (Onion bread is also
delicious with this soup.)
Tip: Cubes of deep-fried halloumi
cheese can be used instead of bacon,
or why not use both? If you are using
halloumi cheese, soak it for 10 minutes to remove some of the salt, and
then drain and dry it very well before
you fry it – the cheese crisp on the
outside and soft on the inside.

Never waste a slice of bread – make
Corn and chicken soup
Serves 6
Smooth creamy liquid, thick and
chunky with chicken and corn; this is
a real comfort meal and so satisfying.
You need to make a kick-ass pot of
chicken stock to really get the best
out of this soup. And what about
those taste buds? This will have them
falling in love with you.
Ingredients:
• 2 litres home-made chicken
stock
• 1 level teaspoon five spice powder
• 1tablespoon finely chopped
fresh ginger
• 3 cloves garlic, crushed
• 3 cups fresh sweet corn kernels
• 4 chicken breast fillets, thinly
sliced
• 1 can creamed sweet corn
• 1 teaspoon corn flour mixed
with ½ cup water
•
•
•
•
•
2 cups sliced spring onions with
tops
1 cup thinly sliced celery with
leaves
1 cup bean sprouts (or more if
you are like me)
Sesame oil for drizzling
Soy sauce for splashing
Method:
Get a pot of home-made chicken
stock simmering gently on the stove.
Heat a little oil in a large pot and
fry the five spice powder, ginger and
garlic for a few minutes to release
the flavour; don’t burn it now! Add
the chicken stock and cook for 10
minutes with the lid off.
Add the fresh corn kernels and cook
for 8 minutes, then add the chicken
breasts and canned sweet corn, and
cook for 7 minutes more on a low
heat. Pour in enough corn flour mix
to thicken the soup to your taste.
Add the spring onions and celery,
and cook for 5 minutes. Check the
seasoning and add a little salt if necessary.
Ladle into bowls, top with sprouts,
and add sesame oil and soy sauce to
taste.
Tip: Add a little chilli and coriander
to the soup if you like; I must say I
like!
