Once-in-Lifetime-Opportunity
Sacred Heart School’s eighth
graders had an experience of a
lifetime when they traveled to
Washington D.C. to hear Pope
Francis address a Joint Meeting
of Congress on September 24,
2015. U.S. Rep. Robert Hurt,
R-5th District provided tickets
for the students. While seated
on the West Lawn of
the Capitol Building,
the students watched
history in the making as
Pope Francis delivered
the first papal speech
to a U.S. Congress. A
massive crowd outside
the Capitol Building
watched in anticipation
as the historical event
unfolded before their
eyes on large television
screens. Students were impressed
when the Pope offered words of
encouragement to youth in the
audience and the importance of
providing opportunities for them
to succeed. Their favorite part of
the speech was his conclusion “God
Bless America.” After his speech,
Pope Francis appeared outside the
Capitol Building on the West Lawn.
According to students, the crowd
erupted into loud cheers as they
caught a glimpse of the beloved Pope.
Not only was this Pope Francis’s
first trip to Washington, D.C., but
also the first trip for some eighth
grade students. The students boarded
a Sacred Heart School bus on
Wednesday after school
with chaperones Kira
Kania, SHS principal,
and religious education
director, Terrie Stone.
The next morning their
day began at 4:00 a.m.
as they prepared to
take the D.C. Metro to
the Capitol Building.

Once-in-LifetimeOpportunity
Continued from Page 1
After the speech, the students were
invited to Congressman Robert
Hurt’s office. Refreshments were
provided and a discussion took
place about the day’s events.
Rep. Hurt was impressed with
the student’s gratitude for having
been given the opportunity to see
the Pope in person. He stated the
students spoke articulately about
the historic importance of the
Pope’s visit. Later in the day, the
students visited the Basilica of the
National Shrine of the Immaculate
Conception. Another first for the
students was seeing nuns, friars,
and cardinals of the Catholic
Church.

held on May 6, 2016 at 1:00 p.m.
at Goodyear Golf Club. This event
will be a great opportunity for a SHS
Class Reunion. Invite your former
classmates to enjoy an afternoon of
golf and support your Alma Mater.
Contact the school at 434-793-2656
for more information.
Upon returning from their trip,
the students shared their reflections
with faculty and staff. They were
interview by local TV, radio and
newspaper reporters. One student
said she felt her family and friends
treated her as if she were “special”
because she had seen the Pope in
person.
At their tender age, a
“Bucket List” is far from their
comprehension, but for many
Catholics, this experience would
define their “Bucket List.” The
school would like to extend
a special thank you to the
chaperones, Terrie Stone and Kira
Kania, who took on the daring
task of escorting teenagers in
downtown Washington, D.C.
A special thank you also goes
to Congressman Robert Hurt,
WSET reporter Tola Adamson,
and videographer R.J. Burnette
who shadowed the students during
their awesome trip, along with the
students’ parents who provided
necessary support and funding for
the trip.

SHS Angel Receives Her Wings
The school celebrated the life of
Christine Tyburski, a beloved religion
teacher, after school coordinator,
and friend to all who passed away
following a brave fight with cancer.
Students and staff supported her
cancer battle by dressing in pink
and wearing pink “Team Mrs. T
bracelets” in her honor during her
treatments. The 2014-15 SHS year
book was dedicated in her honor in
recognition of her retirement in
June 2015. The students, faculty,

the 21 year legacy she leaves Sacred
